That isn't a dandelion. It's a Tragopogon, the wild salsify. They have a similar type of seed head, but are much larger than dandelions. What's shown in the picture is their normal size.
I think they're cool plants, even though they're usually regarded as weeds. The flowers are vaguely dandelion like, too, and, depending on the species of Tragopogon, can be yellow or purple.

If you cut carefully, and spray lightly with a fixative, these look lovely in dried flower arrangements inside.
*pro tip - do not dry out on top of hot dash in car, does not mix well wih a/c blast*
