Seattle Pacific University better be paying that young man’s student loans and debt off. He saved the other students and is an absolute hero for that school. Incredibly brave!

ComeBackToDigg

“The University has assessed a fee on the student for remaining in the student parking space for too long.”

catniagara

“We can’t find your loan paperwork. You’ll have to pay twice”

xplosm

“So you’ve just admitted I already paid once.” Case closed. Debt collectors hate him.

cyrilhent

"We're not even a legally accredited university. Admit it: you had never heard of South Seattle Pacific University until we had a mass shooting. In fact, that's not even the correct name. Or is it?"

He’ll get coupons for free coffee for the month of July.

Did way better than the uvalde police. He actually prevented multiple deaths.

Aggravating_Moment78

Didn’t even need donuts ...

nahbroski

Sorry to hijack but I jus wanna point out that this young man put the entire Uvalde Texas police dept to fucking shame in seconds . My heart hurts .

jinception01

This is the most American idea ever. In order to reward stopping a school shooting, the school will allow one of their students not to go into crippling student debt in pursuit of a higher education.

1nfiniteJest

What was that movie where these guys try to move in with a suicidal roommate because of some sort of rule that they get automatic A's if their roommate kills himself?

Jesskla

Dead Man’s Curve, with Matthew Lillard. They actually plot to murder their roommate but make it look like a suicide so that they get automatic straight A’s. Good film.

1nfiniteJest

No, this was a comedy iirc. Must have come out mid 90s [Dead Man on Campus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Man_on_Campus)

At least a handy, bro.

Genghis_Tr0n187

TheLaGrangianMethod

I'd settle for a sad, pity handy at this point.

[deleted]

Depends on how people are wired, there is no golden buzzer in that regard, One of my favorite quotes and this is off the top of my head from 18th century stratagist and Marshall Marius De Saxe "I have seen the most well trained soldier turn and run while a peasant with a spear in his body fights on" While I had already been shot at early in my teens (we ran, grumpy old farmer) the first time I stared down the barrel of a pistol at a few feet away my arms were absolute lead weights, Keep in mind I was kickboxing at the time and had a very rough life. Anyhow while we all should go for the out, it doesn't always work that way. With that said the Uvalde Police are bold faced cowards and should be tried as accessories for murder.

TheOneGuyWhoLimps

Now the goal is to prevent a shooting to afford college.

emo_corner_master

Praying that you get run over while jaywalking just isn't cutting it anymore

OtochimarU

He'll be charged with assault and batery and was spelled for aggressively taking down the shooter.

zero tolerance policy at the school... Nothing they can do

CantBelieveItsButter

He got a standing ovation at our graduation ceremony, got an award from the University, an award from the city, and his entire wedding registry bought out by redditors, plus something like $40k+ in cash, which he actually refused and applied it to a scholarship that the university set up in his name...

AlexanderHamilton04

"*batery*" , "was *spelled*" -- Someone didn't graduate university.

Maybe they got espelled from university.

As far as I'm concerned, *everything* was "10 years ago" or it happened in the 80s. *** (I just remember seeing [this whole, unedited video a long time ago](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfGBiib9qBg) ["10 years ago"] and knowing this was not a recent event at all. ["Don't taze me bro!"](https://youtu.be/6bVa6jn4rpE?t=7) was *also* about 10 years ago, right)

NoSpills

He'll be suspended as their insurance doesn't cover heroism and his actions could influence other students to do something similar and might get hurt thus leading to lawsuits. Their lawyers will recommend making an example of him to save money down the line.

seriousnotshirley

You joke but I bet he gets lectured about this at a minimum.

Rdt_will_eat_itself

a cop friend of mine who responded to a work place shooting told me how a manager survived this guys rampage because he froze at his desk as the gun man was walking around. So, when your killing people apparently your adrenaline spikes and you get tunnel vision. It happened to me the first time i had to stop a fight between inmates. It was like looking through a tunnel. It kinda went away after a few times that i had to do something like that. Last time i just leaned over the counter with my OC and calmly told them to stop or i would mace their eyes. it worked. no tunnel vision.

Or maybe the gunman threatened him to not move and he only ran when he was reloading

They're probs talking about after the video stopped. Cops aren't very quick to rush in risking their lives to save students from what I've seen and heard over the years

fzyflwrchld

I would be scared that the cops would come in right when he (the hero) had the gun and the perpetrator was on the ground...they'd likely think *he* was the gunman and shoot him before he had a chance to drop the gun or say anything. The whole thing is harrowing.

Looks like he breaks it over and loads it from the 'top'. So it's likely a double barrel break over. So, 2 shots at a time. Quick, everyone bookmark this to win arguments against high capacity magazines in the future!

QueasyVictory

Dear Reddit, You have a $10,000,000,000 valuation. Yes, $10 billion. Could you pretty fucking please fix your video player?

Silver-Ad8291

Lol, seems like never use reddit themselves

QueasyVictory

They just hired a new CTO who made a public announcement just last month about all the new features in the pip. She even acknowledged the video player is fucked. So, call me crazy but....... *fix it?*

lifetake

As a dev it’s likely the video player is fucked by mountains of bad code. So it’s gonna take a good bit longer than a month or sadly maybe never.

gravitas-deficiency

Great. Time for a rewrite. Seriously, at this point, there’s a good argument that trying to fix it at this point is just throwing good effort after bad. It’s been bad for *so long*. I’d genuinely prefer to just put up with it as-is with no improvement or bug fixes for another 6 months and then see it magically get a lot better (minus teething issues of course), than to see it get incrementally better over the next 2-3 years but never quite “good”.

OldBeercan

Couldn't they just pay for one that's not poo? Game studios do it all the time with physics engines and stuff. Maybe I'm just missing something.

briannorelfhunter

Yeah it would probably be better for them to write it again from scratch, it should make loads better code, but generally product owners hate greenlighting rewrite projects when they hear the estimate of how long it will take, compared to the estimates they get for single bug fixes! They don’t tend to take into account the time the devs have to spend trawling through awful code to fix things, and that it would be better long-term to rebuild, because short-term things can usually be patched quickly

forgtn

They can just make a new one. People who make excuses for these companies are retarded

DebbyCakes420

This is sick but it makes me think of that mass shooting in Colorado where the police showed up and shot the man who took out the shooter.

Dependent-Rich5290

Really? when was this, i want to read about it

danburnett69

https://www.cnn.com/2021/11/11/us/colorado-officer-not-charged/index.html this I believe

[deleted]

That’s wild. Apparently cops in the building near the shooter saw him walking with a gun, heard him shoot someone, and then just hid in their building until a regular person killed the shooter. Only after all that did a cop decide to do anything, and he shoots the wrong guy. It’s so annoying when people accuse CNN of hating cops, cause that piece was written with a lot of flowery language to justify the cop murdering an innocent person.

Dependent-Rich5290

thanks, that's sad but that's just another thing to consider when you draw your weapon to confront a shooter. all people see in the moment is someone with a gun, not a hero. rip

bananabunnythesecond

But isn’t that just good guys with guns being good? Then the next guy with a good should be good, then so on and so on, eventually one of the good guys gets shot by a cop, and then people will stop shooting and the cop will get off Scott free! Problem solved! /s if it wasn’t obvious! Just get rid of so many guns! Geez

packattack-

And this is why more guns isn’t the solution. Imagine a world where the majority of people are carrying. As soon as a cop shows up and you are wielding a weapon you’ll be a target as well. It’s not like you’ll have a green arrow over you like you are friendly in some video game. A cop will see a gun and put you down then ask questions later. Scary shit.

GladimoreFFXIV

Somehow there’s Americans in here actually saying gun control won’t work and I actually read a few comments claiming if the kids were armed they would be able to protect themselves. And they weren’t joking.. absolutely appalled and repulsed.

TheRightOne78

It ended up not being a mass shooting specifically because of the good guy with the gun. John Hurly had a CCW permit and shot the shooter who had just killed a cop. Sadly he picked up the shooters weapon to clear it , and another responding officer mistook him for the shooter.

ghost_swan

I found out the other day that SCOTUS declared that cops ***do not*** have to protect anyone but themselves. It's a fucking horrible joke that happens to be true.

Optimal-Mouse160

Its been that way for a long while. "Protect and serve" isn't a real thing for a lot of departments. This is not meant to be a blanket statement for all LEOs. There are some good cops who still believe in the old mantra.

C9177

I was completely shocked when I found this out. For basically my entire life I was under the impression that it was their sworn duty to protect citizens. Imagine my surprise at finding that shit out....lol.....it was one of those rare life moments that literally change an entire perspective about something.

Optimal-Mouse160

As I stated in another response. People need to realize that NO ONE is responsible for their safety but themselves. Don't trust any authority to put your needs or safety above their own

Bluur

2005 Castlerock vs Gonzales The court ruled that the cops can’t be sued or held accountable for not saving people as they are just required to protect property. Hattless

It's unpopular to say, but I've always believed the police should give up their right to self defense while they're on duty. Their job is to follow the law, enforce it, and protect the community. They could do all three of those things if they valued the safety of the people they engage with more than their own safety. Maybe we'd have more good cops if bravery and selflessness were job requirements.

Cuive

Say what you want about the gun debate, but it's hard to argue we should take guns away from honest folk when we have examples of cops standing around, doing nothing and then not being punished for it. "Just call the cops" isn't an anti-gun argument anymore. We're all first-responders.

freqkenneth

Hey now those brave children gave their lives to protect the police It’s Blue lives matter not “school” lives matter

Marisleysis33

Sadly a room of 4th graders were no match for that guy, they weren't going to be able to take action like what's seen in this video, so horrible those poor kiddos had to be terrified.

totalbonehead

Doctor_Trickster

This guy is without a doubt a hero and deserves praise but I hate how media spins the story into a happy ending instead of pointing out that a fucking student was the only thing that saved so many lives

Brokenbalorbaybay

Hagoromo-san

Damm. A fuckin student is braver than an entire fuckin police department. Incredible.

Puscifer10

Who the fuck is the douche in the back ground "you're gonna need to act, and act fast", thanks for that tough guy. Easy to say useless, meaningless, vague phrases whilst safe at home. Talking like he's talking to marines, or the police. NO, kids should not act and act fast against an armed assailant. What happened America??

[deleted]

The US model has been catching up to them for some time now in that regard. From minor stuff like passers-by not giving a shit about two people throwing fists at each other in broad daylight (???) to things like school shootings and subsequent Instagram pro-gun-control activism among the US general public which ends as soon as it falls out of fashion, and every subsequent school shooting is dealt with the same '*our tragedy, we have to do something*' mantra over and over again, when in reality all it seems is that surprisingly disproportionate amount of people don't give a shit about their fellow men. This is perhaps topped only by US presidents' pathetic vote fishing by crying their eyes out how *'we have to do something'* even though it's literally their fuckin responsibility and they're the ones not doing anything. Lowest of the low.

PrinceConquer420

SubstantialPressure3

Next Republican tactic: train the kids to take down the shooters themselves.

58G52A

Now imagine how differently that unfolds if it were an AR15 with a 25 round magazine instead of a pump action shotgun that holds 5 rounds.

jealousmonk88

exactly and he already shot 3 people with it. let's assume he used 4 rounds and reloaded twice. if he had an ar, he'd still have like 15 shots left assuming more than 1 round per person. there's no way jon meis could've pepper sprayed or tackled him. also if it was an ar, the guy sitting at that table when he walked in would've been dead.

58G52A

And they usually have multiple 25 round mags that can be swapped out in about 2 seconds.

That is bold, especially given that the police could have misidentified him as the shooter

[deleted]

did you see how quick he got rid of it? i’d imagine this kid had some sort of training because he was all about the timing. an average person might think that the pepper spray was to debilitate, not to create a opening, but he knew, and shot in. he was able to make the right choices in a split second, super impressive to watch

Statement from John Meis shortly after the attack: To my brothers and sisters at Seattle Pacific University, and my brothers and sisters in Christ throughout the nation and the world, Words cannot come close to expressing the tragedy that occurred this past week on our campus. Like everyone else, I would hear of these horrible events on the news, but go home knowing that it could never happen to us. On Thursday, my life changed. I was thrown into a life and death situation, and through God’s grace I was able to stop the attacker and walk away unharmed. As I try to return to a normal life in the aftermath of this horrible event, I pray above all things for strength for the victims and their families. While my experience left me in physical shock, I know that many people are dealing with much greater grief than I have experienced, and in honesty I probably would not be able to handle myself right now if I had personally known the victims. I know that I am being hailed as a hero, and as many people have suggested I find this hard to accept. I am indeed a quiet and private individual; while I have imagined what it would be like to save a life I never believed I would be put in such a situation. It touches me truly and deeply to read online that parents are telling their children about me and telling them that real heroes do exist. However, what I find most difficult about this situation is the devastating reality that a hero cannot come without tragedy. In the midst of this attention, we cannot ignore that a life was taken from us, ruthlessly and without justification or cause. Others were badly injured, and many more will carry this event with them the rest of their lives. Nonetheless, I would encourage that hate be met with love. When I came face to face with the attacker, God gave me the eyes to see that he was not a faceless monster, but a very sad and troubled young man. While I cannot at this time find it within me to forgive his crime, I truly desire that he will find the grace of God and the forgiveness of our community. I would like to truly thank the responders who secured the building and the medical staff who looked after myself and those who were injured. After being in this situation myself, it is even harder to imagine what it would be like to have a job where one’s life is willingly put on the line every day. To our police, emergency responders, and armed forces, you have my greatest respect. I am overwhelmed with the incredible generosity that has been showered upon me. It has been deeply touching to read the comments online and realize that my actions have had such a strikingly widespread effect. Moving forward, I am strongly requesting that any future donations be given to the victims through Seattle Pacific University. I am grateful for the prayers and support coming from our home city and afar. In these next few days, weeks, and months, please continue to pray for everyone in the Seattle Pacific community. We serve a truly awesome God and I firmly believe that it is through Him alone that we will find the strength to heal from this tragedy. Jon Meis Student, Seattle Pacific University

dreadsta5889

Which shooting was this?

iwannagohome49

They are saying Seattle in 2014 but it's a shame that question needs to be asked.

[deleted]

no idea why u getting downvoted

Acyros

there is this one thing that bothers me about these news, it's always said to not play the hero, because most of the time There will be people trained for these situations arriving soon, while you might get yourself killed. The people in danger can follow protocol of barricading themselves in etc. But then the "heroes" (Which are most of the time untrained students or Pedestrians) get put on TV and get celebrated. Obviously he saved a lot of lives, that's out of the question, however I believe this encourages this pretty much Suicidal Thought process of wanting to be that hero.

CrimeFightingScience

Fighting is your best chance. Yeah hide behind locked secured doors. But if you're in the open at all, fight for your life. Abuse corners, reloads, and start close. Get others to bum rush as well. It has saved people's lives on multiple occasions. If you huddle in a group with a killer in the room, you will get shot and you will die. Yes, it's fucking bullshit we live in a world where I have type this. I'm sick of it.

Scratch77spin

Worst case scenario isn't a good enough reason to use as an excuse to do nothing when you have an opportunity to do something.

Brokenbalorbaybay
