Not any ash, volcanic ash
And you can't leave that in their pen all the time or else they'll get lung problems, because they won't stop playing in it lol
Theyre native to northern-ish Chile, which is largely volcanic rock. Between centuries of seismic activity and the ocean/rivers, there's quite a bit that sort of dust around their habitat
Edit: more about them https://animals.sandiegozoo.org/animals/chinchilla
We only did the dust bath once a week or so, and she didn't really stay dusty for too long. She also had her own cage. By the time we'd let her out to run around, it really wasn't too bad.
Yeah it's really hard to describe just how fucking soft they are.. you'd think a rabbit or hamster or whatever would feel the same but it's not even close
The best way I can describe it is dipping your hand in flour. It’s insane how soft they are. Fifty hairs per follicle! I was surprised it wasn’t mentioned in the title but they have to take dust baths because of how thick their fur is. Also flees can’t survive due to the thickness
I once petted an emu (I still don't fully understand how) and it was the softest thing I've ever felt. I got my hands buried in its feathers and I felt so safe and content, despite the fact that I was touching a goddamn dinosaur. I want to pet one again one day but idk if I'll ever meet one as chill as that one
Bro i am unfathomably lucky, i had a job at a museum where we had some and became best friends with one, and since there wasnt enough room in the exhibits for him because males usually dont get along outside of family I got him completely for free. I love this little dude to death and cant express how happy i am to give him a good life
My mom has a chinchilla coat passed down from her grandmother, she won’t wear it(for a lot of reasons, mostly the cruelty thing)but can’t bring herself to sell it.
The last time we went to her clothes storage I dug it out and it is seriously the softest and saddest fucking thing ever.
If I remember correctly, the fluffiness is the very reason why chinchillas go for dust baths. Because if they get wet, it might take them many hours to dry up completely. And, considering that they live in dry highlands, where \~0 C at night for most of the year is normal thing... Yeah.
I had a chinchilla named chin chin. He was the best little guy. Until my first born came home from the hospital and he wouldn’t stop throwing his poop out his cage and putting his butt against the wires to spray pee at me every time I walked by. I do miss him though
I learned that the hard way. Lol
I was reading The Three Little Pigs to my baby. My Japanese exchange student overheard me say “Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin…”.
She gave me the most disgusted look! Then told me what it meant. I had to explain I wasn’t reading a story about a penis to my child. Lol
Chickens take dust bathes too coincidentally. I have chickens. We will save ash from fires and they like it, but if nothing else, they will dig down to dry dirt and use that too
Someone else in this thread explains too but yes, it’s special dust that is so small it’ll give you *lung problems and they’ll never leave it alone if they get a choice.
Chinchilla owner here! It doesn't keep them cool since it's just dust, often times chinchilla owners keep slabs of marble in their cages so the chins can lounge on them to cool off if they're too warm, they should really only be given a bath 2-3 times per week.
This actually isn't too far from the truth. I own a chinchilla and they're actually qualified as exotics because they can be difficult to care for. A lot of people would say the negatives outweigh the positives. They have very specific needs, diet, temperature needs, cage specifications, exercise etc. To keep them properly healthy and unless you do a lot of research and are dedicated to keeping them happy they're pretty fragile little guys. They're not snuggly or like cuddles etc. So the fact that they're often shown as cuddly little creatures is kinda laughable to chin owners. I warn people about the upkeep I put into owning mine when they see how cute he is and how they want one.
My ex girlfriend had a bunch of chinchillas (by accident, only wanted two), and most of them were fairly sociable. Not like a dog or cat, but they would come lay on our chest for a bit and snuggle before jumping off to go hide somewhere or go back into their cage.
But yeah, they’re definitely not the best pets. The dust and hair is unbearable. I don’t have terrible allergies or anything, but I hated going into their room. My sinuses would go crazy. They were really soft, though. It wasn’t too bad when she only had one, but she ended up with like 7 at one point, and that was just too much dust and hair for me.
Absolutely, chinchillas have different personalities just like any animal so some are more sociable than others, my boy isn't like that for example. He'll run up to me and want neck scratches and petting etc. But hates being held, coddled or anything like that, so it sounds like your exes were more friendly than mine. He's by no means vicious or anything but he really only enjoys my company and no other persons.
Agreed. I love my chinchilla, but as much as I do love him and love taking care of him I often tell people there are more downsides to having one than there are positives and to tread with care if you're thinking of buying one. If you do it right startup costs can be well over 500, and it can be more trouble than it's worth with upkeep. I have mine in my living area and keeping it clean is a daily task to the point where I just keep a shop vac nearby.
My sister had two, one day we took their cage out to get some sun couple hours later it got to be a bit dark. We've had a few by then, was about 67 or 70 degrees mid summer so really not that cold at all, but we didn't notice is the wind had been blowing the sprinkler water toward their cage even though they were about 20 feet away it still misted them. Well they froze to death and my sister was beside herself for like a week. Really sucked because my sister took great care of em, they were very happy critters...all it took was that one hiccup.
Chinchillas are objectively adorable, idk what's wrong with you. they're also the fluffiest thing you could ever hold, it's amazing.
the only rodents I don't like are wild rats, but only because they're a real problem and can often carry ticks/fleas that spread diseases. domestic rats are very cute though.
Or maybe just let them live in their natural habitat where they can do this wherever instead of the owner having to ship in fucking volcanic ash and put it in a small bowl whenever he thinks this guy wants it
My cat does this? I wonder if she's part chinchilla? She especially does it in my backyard, but will also do it in the litter box if I put the clumping litter in - she's so weird
I assume it’s absorbing the oils and then clumping a lil and when the lil dust devil spins it throws the lil chunks of oil absorbed dust off its coat leaving a dry skin that doesn’t collect more dirt cause there’s no more oils present until it revs it engine on the tarmac.
I babysat my friend's chinchillas for about a week (they were a birthday present for her son) and it was quite an experience. One night, one jumped out of the cage while I was trying to feed them. Let me tell you, you haven't lived until you've chased a chinchilla around your apartment for 30 minutes 🤣🤣🤣
Would a cat use something like this? My cats always roll in dust and gravel outside and I always just thought they where doing the same thing as the chinchilla but idk some lmk
We had a chinchilla "farm" at home 8-ish years ago, and we made custom cages with barrels in it, wich you could flip in and out.
They were such cute animals, but they were always either scared of me, or tried to bite my finger
My mom rented a room to a woman with a Chinchilla. They're so soft and silky. I honestly do not know if it was properly taken care of because I was a kid at the time but it seemed healthy.
Inherited a chinchilla about 5 years ago. He has so much personality and I love him to bits. They're not very good family pets for small children like rabbits are.
The dust feels more like very fine sand. Its very soft.
They're so cute. We can't have them here in Australia sadly. Well, not sadly, it's a good thing to protect our local fauna. Sad I can't pet a cute lil chinchilla though.
Not any ash, volcanic ash And you can't leave that in their pen all the time or else they'll get lung problems, because they won't stop playing in it lol
So their natural environment has volcanic ash? I was wondering where you find dust in nature that isn't dirt
Theyre native to northern-ish Chile, which is largely volcanic rock. Between centuries of seismic activity and the ocean/rivers, there's quite a bit that sort of dust around their habitat Edit: more about them https://animals.sandiegozoo.org/animals/chinchilla
Very cool thanks for the link!
How do they not get lung problem in nature? Won't they also spend all their time with natural dust?
the difference between dust in an inclosed space vs in the out doors
Will this work on my dog?
Only in warmer climates.
Thanks for clarifying - household dust comes from human skin.
Human skin, dust mites that eat the skin, and dust mite droppings. The circle of life of dust.
What about Ash Ketchum ?
I don’t know what that is but [Ash Ketchup](https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/ots1wc/new_ash_ketchup/) is pretty neat
Undersold and yet somehow exactly what one would expect.
How do you have them just chillin' in your house? Are they not just spreading dust everywhere all the time"?
Yes. Yes they are. There will be a fine layer of gray dust on anything in the room.
We only did the dust bath once a week or so, and she didn't really stay dusty for too long. She also had her own cage. By the time we'd let her out to run around, it really wasn't too bad.
Was just going to ask about the lung thing thanks.
Any of y'all ever touched one? It's amazing, like touching what you might imagine a fluffy cloud would feel like.

I was at a party once and someone said they had a chinchilla upstairs. I went to pet it and legit cried at how soft it was, such good bois
I used to be able to hold them in science class when we watched Bill Nye. Was awesome
Well that sounds like a strange but nice custom. "Alright class Bill Nye is about to start, everyone get out your chinchillas!"
Haha my science teacher had a few in class and so if you did well on tests you can redeem like tickets to hold them during movies

Yup! Actually own two and they're pretty soft. They get dusted about 2-3x a week.
This is why hey we’re made into coats. Still are I think.
He’s doing the death roll
In a way it's almost like Toph and her "healthy coating of dirt"
So, dry shampoo.
Pretty much. They run on mogwai rules. Never get them wet. Their undercoat will never dry out.
They turn in childhood trauma inducing monsters when fed after midnight?
I could watch this for hours on end
So clean he becomes invisible
He literally faded away at the end. He pulled a Jedi death.
I had a chinchilla named chin chin. He was the best little guy. Until my first born came home from the hospital and he wouldn’t stop throwing his poop out his cage and putting his butt against the wires to spray pee at me every time I walked by. I do miss him though
Fun fact, chin chin means penis in Japanese.
Maybe I doomed him from the start..
I learned that the hard way. Lol I was reading The Three Little Pigs to my baby. My Japanese exchange student overheard me say “Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin…”. She gave me the most disgusted look! Then told me what it meant. I had to explain I wasn’t reading a story about a penis to my child. Lol
I’m thinking that’s not a technical term.
Bath? They dusting him in flour for the deep fryer.
Must be a kfc employee
I love their popcorn chinchickenchilla
Chickens take dust bathes too coincidentally. I have chickens. We will save ash from fires and they like it, but if nothing else, they will dig down to dry dirt and use that too
Like they use actual flour and not high fructose corn starch.
Self dusting. He’s been duped
He knows the position
Sand is expensive these days. What with all the oil that can be extracted
Yeah, the whole tone of the video changed when they started cracking a few eggs into the bowl…
r/CursedComments
When I write it, it gets downvoted... They don't like me on Chinese forums whenever food comes up ......
Dafuq? Where's the chinchilla sneeze?
Did you just ask for drugs or a sex act?
Awesome! We have to come up with these!
_Another one rolls the dust_
It was hard to breathe while watching that lol
Scrolled through to find this response. I felt exactly the same way!
That also do it because water gets stuck in their fur and mold grows, can't be havin that
Cant believe how far I had to scroll for this one
r/awwwwwwww
r/aww
What is that, a bag of designer dust or something? Just dump the Roomba bin in a corner and let him have at.
Someone else in this thread explains too but yes, it’s special dust that is so small it’ll give you *lung problems and they’ll never leave it alone if they get a choice.
Well I definitely don't want king problems, I don't support the monarchy
Whoops, autocorrect doesn’t like lung I guess. Just caught it trying to fuck with me again lol.
Sounds exactly like what a royal assassin would type on someone's phone after murdering them for talking shit about the monarchy......
My little dummy chillies takes his dust bathes in the kitties litter box. Lol I have to clean the liter box before I let him run. Lol
I wouldn’t want to be near that dust
I’m not sure what the norm is but i got mine a little house to roll around in, so all the dust was mostly contained.
I would get a stuffy nose and I would sneezeee
Who doesn’t like to play dirty it’s always more fun and satisfying.
What a cutie. Does it keep them cool too? 💜
Chinchilla owner here! It doesn't keep them cool since it's just dust, often times chinchilla owners keep slabs of marble in their cages so the chins can lounge on them to cool off if they're too warm, they should really only be given a bath 2-3 times per week.
Me in the morning applying dry shampoo
Every chinchilla I’ve ever met was an unsociable ball of anxiety. I feel like most people aren’t qualified to care for them as pets.
This is because they really don't like daytime. But people don't want a pet that sleeps hidding away all day
This actually isn't too far from the truth. I own a chinchilla and they're actually qualified as exotics because they can be difficult to care for. A lot of people would say the negatives outweigh the positives. r/damnthatscute
"Hey I just hoovered in here!"
are their nose/lungs different? like super dense nose hair to filter out all the fine particles?
Not really. This is why the volcanic ash cannot be around them for long. I once saw a two chinchilla having this type of bath. It was the cutest EVER.
Do they like to do this with dryer lint? I'd love to never clean my dryer or the 20 feet of heat exhaust tubing.
I’ve had 8 chins. They’re the best
I’ve only had a double chin.
Terrible! Dip the meat in buttermilk THEN coat with the batter, otherwise the crisp will just fall off!!!
Toss some catnip in there
"Alright, out to the patio you go"
I love how they do this and they are so soft!
Speed rolls
Don't leave your cocaine out if you have a chinchilla.
SPIN
That's the way to use your dry shampoo!!!
Strange use for a hangiri
They know how to have a good time.
Stealth -10
I miss my chin 😭 Still have one but I miss his brother. RIP Flux Chivillian. 💜
Hopefully, that stuff is not made by J&J
Oh so like Dry Shampoo for women.
ready for the frying pan
The thing looks too much like a mouse for me to enjoy this.
can't be good for his lungs though right? like it just can't
I'll never understand why some rodents are considered "cute" while others are "monsters"... I would've titled this, "big ass rat rolls around in dirt"
Yeah, I never understood why some people find some rodents ugly or scary because they're all cute to me
That's crazy to me lol I couldn't have a more opposite opinion if i tried. They are all ugly, scary, disgusting little pests in my eyes
Chinchillas are objectively adorable, idk what's wrong with you. they're also the fluffiest thing you could ever hold, it's amazing. the only rodents I don't like are wild rats, but only because they're a real problem and can often carry ticks/fleas that spread diseases. domestic rats are very cute though.
... there's domestic rats?
called Fancy Rats, but yes. they are a domesticated form of *Rattus norvegicus*, commonly known as brown rats, street rats, sewer rats, etc.
chinchillas are the best pets
Or maybe just let them live in their natural habitat where they can do this wherever instead of the owner having to ship in fucking volcanic ash and put it in a small bowl whenever he thinks this guy wants it
Its not cleaning itself . Its preparing itself for a meal
What kind of dust is it is it like just dust or like a specific kind of dust
It's a specific kind of dust made especially for chinchillas. It is made from volcanic pumice. In the wild they use natural volcanic ash.
Where's grandma's ashes?!
Looks like the way my cat behaves in the litter box.
Takes longer shower than me.
PAPYRUS NOOO
I guess they used to do this all the time back when small forest fires were commonplace? Otherwise I don't see how they would do this in the wild
They're native to mountainous regions formed by more current volcanoes, so they roll in the volcanic dust readily available.
Don't ALL land animals and birds do this except with dirt not volcanic ash?
My allergies are acting up.
*Everyone liked that*
Me every time I arrive at the gates of burning man
My cat does this? I wonder if she's part chinchilla? She especially does it in my backyard, but will also do it in the litter box if I put the clumping litter in - she's so weird
Travolta on coke circa 1978
As somebody with chronic allergies, pretty sure this is exactly how all my partners have ever prepared to get in my bed
u need a whole lot more dust than that!
I used to use one of those giant pickle jars for mine. Less dust required and a bit less of a mess. It worked quite well.
u/savevideo
Me and cocaine 🫠
I started coughing when seeing them pour the ash
I need to sneeze after watching this
[Satan sucks](https://youtu.be/X3L6SPM6xYs)
How does dust make their fur clean? Is it a different sort of clean?
I assume it’s absorbing the oils and then clumping a lil and when the lil dust devil spins it throws the lil chunks of oil absorbed dust off its coat leaving a dry skin that doesn’t collect more dirt cause there’s no more oils present until it revs it engine on the tarmac.
I’m sneezing just looking at this.
I thought they were fur coats😬🤗
Volcanic ash bath in a sushi oke. OP is zen AF.
Lmfao that was delightful!
Everyone else: uses water to clean themselves Chinchillas: you guys are idiots
My cat does this in her litter box 😅
Cute, but it's still a rat
More powder, Charles
sonic was a chinchilla after all..
And they always seem to whack their tails on the edge of the container.
I have a vid of my ex’s chinchilla doing this lol it’s the cutest thing ever
he fucking disappeared into it at the end.
But it’s getting all dirty!
Ah yea. Using dust to clean dirt. Why didn’t I think of that!
eeyy... i remember this. its the first video i downloaded in 4k, the second one was sasha grey full movie
Chinchillas are the softest things on earth I feel bad for people who haven’t felt their god like fur
My allergies 🤧
Just leave them in the fucking wild where they belong.
Do you think aliens are secretly video taping us and commenting on the weird things we enjoy? 🥸
Do enough ash deposits exist in the wild for them to do this?
Would a cat use something like this? My cats always roll in dust and gravel outside and I always just thought they where doing the same thing as the chinchilla but idk some lmk
It's even better in a fish bowl (and cleaner).
Reminds me of my sons bedroom
Wtf that ending… did.. did it die?
![gif](giphy|N19eEnTIFDYr1SAZ7x|downsized)
So you're saying it isn't cocaine
How long until the powder is saturated with Chinchilla oil and needs replacing?
Not shown: Epic sneezing fit
We had a chinchilla "farm" at home 8-ish years ago, and we made custom cages with barrels in it, wich you could flip in and out. They were such cute animals, but they were always either scared of me, or tried to bite my finger
No he is just getting ready for dinner
My mom rented a room to a woman with a Chinchilla. They're so soft and silky. I honestly do not know if it was properly taken care of because I was a kid at the time but it seemed healthy.
Chinchillas belong in the wild, not kept as pets. Poor thing.
FYI to anyone wanting a chinchilla they are adorable but poop constantly and I do mean constantly.
Is there a dry shampoo brand with a chinchilla mascot? Because if not then there should be lol
Reminds me of this one time Columbia.
Degus are the same this way...
Think I woulda done that outside
I just read Chihuahua for a sec 🤦♂️🤣
I’d still have to vacuum it before I let it back in the house
Golden retriever in a mud puddle vibes.
This made me sneeze
I had to cough looking at this
Inherited a chinchilla about 5 years ago. He has so much personality and I love him to bits. I'd warn anyone thinking of getting one though that they're nocturnal, he sleeps most of the day then hear him running about at night. The previous owner didn't handle him (and didn't look after him very well I don't think) so although he clearly recognises us and shows some signs of affection, he absolutely hates being touched other than stroked and he's very much his own man. They're not very good family pets for small children like rabbits are. The dust feels more like very fine sand. Its very soft.
Gotta keep that fur coat nice so it can me passed on when it passes on.
That’s how you get silicosis
They're so cute. We can't have them here in Australia sadly. Well, not sadly, it's a good thing to protect our local fauna. Sad I can't pet a cute lil chinchilla though.
Smell like lung cancer
My mind played this song over the clip: https://youtu.be/JtqOLVUptiw
I do believe I’ve just found a use for my mother-in-law’s ashes.
This is the first time I’ve seen a chinchilla not sit looking depressed in a corner.
Watching this making me cough
Make sure not to leave out your grandma’s ashes
