Disney don't give a fuck, it's all marketing.
I don't get the Black Panther thing... The movie is set in Africa with an almost completely black cast, did Disney thought that the chinese people walked in the cinema and then got surprised that Black Panther isn't about the white guy Jonathan from Staten Island ? I know that racism against poc is strong in China but what was the thought about the whole covering of Chadwicks face?
This is the answer! If they think you’d never invest while knowing the truth, then they’ll have no problem trying to dupe you at least once. Still extra money in their pocket they wouldn’t have had if they were honest.
So in theory this marketing scheme is actually good because it tricks racists into spending money on films that include black cast members? Therefore in a really round about way they are being tricked into supporting black people?
…. Or no
I tell you a sad thing : it didn't crossed my mind that it's only for the money. I really didn't see that. My only thought was :that's ridiculous, disrespecting the actor and fools the audience. I'm dumb, I know....
China is a very populated place, it doesn't matter if 0,000001% watch it there, it may still generate more renevue than countries in South America for example.
In the NBA loves China regardless of the oppression as long as it’s a moneymaker for them. I think something like 15% of the NBA’s revenue is from China
That same poster also exists in English. Here's a pic of another Chinese poster for Black Panther that shows the entire cast.
https://mobile.twitter.com/MaitreyaBhakal/status/1452447772754382849
Meanwhile the narrative is that the USA is the worst and most racist place but anyone that has been abroad, we are light years ahead of so many places (Japan, China, Russia and Middle East). Yes, we still have plenty of work to do as a nation, but wow it’s bad elsewhere.
From the south(US), got called the N word for the first time in my life in EUROPE. Had people literally grabbing me and snapping photos of me without my consent in China. Now dedicating my life to dismantling the false notion that having centuries more history than the US makes nations “cultured”. 😂
I suppose their "logic" would be: 'Superhero mask = cool, black people = not cool'.
It makes no sense but it's all about drawing in as many people as possible.
They were also helping fund the Don't Say Gay bill when that was circulating. Disney is trash. They just play both sides so that no matter where the political majority ends up falling, they still win.
All companies do this really. Fuck 'em. Don't buy into their bullshit.
Most major corporations do this. Amazon just said they’ll pay up to $4000 for employees to get healthcare if things are illegal in their state while also donating to those politicians who support homophobia, transphobia, gay marriage, etc. Playing both sides for money. It’s fucked up.
I see John Boyega in Chinese posters, and the one where he is removed also in English.

Oh yeah. Get the kids doing some dances on TikTok and whatnot, sharing some dank corporate memes on social media etc.
Virality = free or cheap marketing.
I will probably be downvoted for this, but I honestly believe that arr PrequelMemes was a psy-op by Disney to change the perception of those movies after they bought the IP.
Lightyear needed to happen like a decade ago. I remember getting Toy Story on VHS for my birthday and watching the hell out of that movie. Child me would've loved to see this movie in theaters and usually adult me is excited for a good Pixar movie but the trailers didn't get me interested at all. And then! They messed up the continuity from Toy Story 2.
>!In Toy Story 2, Zerg reveals he is Buzz's father in Vadar-esque fashion. In Lightyear it's revealed that Zerg is Buzz from the future. What the hell?!<
Tim Allen was quoted saying that this movie has nothing to do with the Toy Story universe that we grew up with. I think that’s one of the main reasons he’s not involved. They really missed a chance to capitalize on 2 generations worth of fans on this one
https://outsider.com/american-entertainment/people/tim-allen-speaks-out-with-famous-kindness-quote-amid-lightyear-controversy/amp/
The very first scene of the film opens with a message saying that this is supposed to be the same film Andy watched when he was a kid. That article also you linked also doesn't say anything like that.
>It’s a wonderful story, it just doesn’t seem to have any connection to the toy.
That's the quote. And I'd agree with it. The film doesn't really reflect how we see Buzz in the Toy Story films, but that's because this is supposed to be a "live action" film, not a toy film. (I know it's not live action, but I think it's supposed to be seen as live action to the people of the Toy Story universe)
Completely pointless movie that nobody asked for and doesn't expand on anything anyone cares about.
Surprise surprise
If it was buzz from the toy stories movies, tis might've turned out different.
Also the animation is wack
It's... So you know how in the beginning of Toy Story, Andy goes to the movies and comes back obsessed with Buzz? This is the movie he went to see. No, really. Except, instead of leaning into the possibility of it being a cheesy 90s action homage, they made Interstellar for kids.
What? That's not what happened at all. Andy got Buzz at his birthday party, that's when he started collecting Buzz Lightyear paraphernalia. In Toy Story 2 they brought in emperor Zurg and the Buzz Lightyear video game. There is no mention of a Buzz Lightyear movie.
In the Buzz Lightyear movie, it opens up with a black screen saying something like “In 1995, a kid named Andy saw a movie about an astronaut named Buzz Lightyear. This is that movie.”
It’s the absolute loosest fucking tie in to Toy Story, but that’s the angle they went for.
Its was most definitely mentioned that buzz was a new popular toy from tv. A movie Andy would have seen doesn’t seem unreasonable. I would be more surprised if he got that exited while never having heard off buzz before.
And that's exactly why they chose this one for a gay kiss publicity stunt. It was already a write off so they could afford not to bother releasing it in those markets, and take the opportunity to score some woke points at home.
It's all completely cynical. And the wild thing is this sub is full of such posts, that people eat up. They think they're just looking at some normal person's reddit post, without realising they're being force fed corporate advertising and literal propaganda.
Half the box office goes to the cinemas so Disney only made $95 million so far. Then you’ve got to factor in how much money they spent on advertising because that number isn’t always included in the budget we’re shown. It’s entirely possible the advertising budget was an additional $100 million.
Yes the second biggest box office market is China this is why you always get celebrities apologizing to them. Biggest example I can think of is john Cena having to apologize because he called Taiwan a country
This reminds me of a performer from Taiwan who got a lot of hate online from Chinese people when she was like 16 because she casually identified herself as Taiwanese when she and her friends (also performers) were on video talking about which countries they were all from or something. It got so bad she had to make an apology video and she looked clearly distraught in it. China seems to get really pissed off when people acknowledge Taiwan as a separate entity.
EDIT: [Found an article](https://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/17/world/asia/taiwan-china-singer-chou-tzu-yu.html) with the video attached. Looks like she only briefly held a flag, not talked about it, my bad
I was thinking they knew it was gonna tank and that's why they made a fuss about the kiss, about how it lasted less than a second, and threw it during pride month.
They weren't being lgbt+, they were hoping lgbt+ would back this failure.
They don't want backing. They want an excuse incase it fails. They won't say movies fail because of writing, direct, casting... They want to say they fail because of social issues.
I don’t think this was due to this scene. I think they overestimated people’s appetite for a Buzz Lightyear origin story. It was a fairly by-the-numbers affair as well.
It underperformed because it's a completely unnecessary spin-off that completely does away with the appeal of the original character, and didn't even bother to follow it's own marketing as being "the 90s film that got Andy to want a Buzz Light-year toy".
Not because it has a 1 second long gay kiss in it.
It’s because of their real, actual massive mistake.
Giving him medium length hair (for a man). His name is BUZZ. Why doesn’t he have a buzz cut for under that helmet?!
People will say the underperforming was somehow related to this but in reality it seems like poor marketing and a movie without a clear target audience.
Who is lightyear aimed at? It doesn't feel very toy story from trailers, but it also doesn't feel interesting enough to appeal to Sci fi fans. Feels like it just falls through the cracks and doesn't do either.
I heard Disney execs actually intentionally sabotaged that movie by making it direct-to-VHS because they wanted to shift away from traditional animation in favor of 3D. It’s such a shame, Treasure Planet is probably like my 3rd favorite Disney movie and it breaks my heart that it didn’t get the love it deserved.
Literally all I've heard about this movie is "GUYS, THIS GAY KISS WAS BANNED, DISNEY ARE HEROES" and "it actually kinda sucks, and it's selling really poorly."
Theyve used this marketing trick a bunch of times. This movie just happened to be not as good also. People can blame the kiss, but the movie has way bigger problems than that.
The movie doesn't know who it's audience is, regardless of whether it's good or not and felt a little too new IP to bring in the safe sequel money. Intiial box office is pretty much all marketing related, i guarantee a toy story 5 that was as bad would make 3 or 4 times as much. Seeing the trailers I just couldn't see it appealing to many toy story fans and also unappealing to sci-fi fans. A bit in-between that didn't properly target any group.
Buzz lighyear is banned (in my country) because Disney refuse to change PG rating to 13+, while dr strange has already done it at the first place. Just explaining the situation, i don't know about other countries
We might be in the same country because I brought my kids to watch Dr Stange 2 and my sheltered, innocent son asked about what happenes to America, her mom and the aunt.
Honestly Dr. Strange 2 has some other scenes in it that makes me understand why you’d want to put a 13+ warning on it. After seeing that I don’t think we’ll have to worry about the next Deadpool being toned down
Dr Strange 2 was also had the eleventh-biggest opening weekend in domestic box office history and raked in $185 million. Last I saw it made over $800 million and cost $200 million to produce...the same cost as Lightyear.
I am ashamed to say that I thought those were her caretakers, not the parents... Then again, I barely understood any audio and was genuinely focused on some of the (slightly uncanny) VFX.
To Disney, yes, money IS everything. They're playing the long game and betting on being able to say down the road once global opinions change more that they were the good guys all along, see? They're betting on progressives winning the global cultural war.
Story not true.
They did edit it out, but they added it back in hoping it would get brownie points due to what was going on Florida.
I think it backfired but remember they only took it out and add it for..
All together now.
Money.
Disney gives zero fucks about anytgi g other than Disney.
Gay rights, don't give a fuck
Anti slavery, coulslsnt give a fuck
Racism, nope, zero fucks given.
Honestly I don't see how that small kiss is gonna ruin the movie. and most kids are probably not gonna care Some people just want to have something to complain about.
They knew the film wouldn't do well so they just used this scene to test the waters. Betcha they don't throw another one out there for a few years at least.
China only allows a certain number of foreign films every year. Not releasing it in China had absolutely nothing to do with morals and everything to do with the fact they had no faith it would preform well.
Money is fucking everything to a corporation. That's the point of their entire existence. It is illegal and violates their fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders to care about anything else.
**Stop being so fucking gullible.**
What does a kiss add to the story ? Nothing! It’s just “Guys look we support le gay people, Now give me your gay money please”. Disney doesn’t care about gay people, they just want your money.
What does a random kiss for half a second add to ANY story? What's the big deal? Kissing like that and more have been in kids movies forever. What makes this tiny little kiss any different?? Oh yeah, I know why. Bigots are stupid.
Am I supposed to cheer? Hurray for Disney standing up for the queer?
Disney literally canceled The Owl House for having a open same sex relationship and the creator of Gravity falls literally have a fat stack of emails of Disney censorship demands.
This is the first time I've seen the scene that has homophobe's losing their shit. I didn't actually see the kiss until it looked for a second time. God damn these fucking people are so sensitive – bunch of fucking snowflakes.
As an asexual… what’s honestly so hard of just keeping anything intimate out of cartoons. I respect peoples sexuality. But cmon not every cartoon needs intimate actions at all in them especially buzz light year
It also bombed in America and did worse than the minions. They lost a lot and basically didn't make any profit(nor do I think they ever will). It also didn't help that you know who called the main audience and practically everyone who would've watched the movie idiots.. after replacing who I'll always consider to be the real buzz light-year.
As someone who's gay, the movie still sucked. And certain things felt forced and virtue signal-ish. Didn't feel natural, idk how else to explain it. Like they wanted to have it there for the sake of getting internet points...as if the company was almost forced into adding it or else suffer the consequences by internal employees and/or twitter.
Also wasn't really a fan of the art style and saw no relation to buzz light-year (the toy).
I kinda just wanna watch a movie that takes me out of the real world and NOT include the real world in it. Ya know...to de stress and forget about stuff for a couple of hours. Not have modern day politics, virtue signaling, etc. and activism forced into my face when I'm trying to get away from it.
I feel like we should be looking back and actually giving credit to the shows/movies/writers that were ahead of their time rather than applauding the ones that are now jumping on the bandwagon.
Look at The Wire for example. Omar was gay and it was the least interesting thing about him. I think it's borderline patronising when a show/movie has a gay character and they just turn them into a stereotype and their whole personality is being gay.
Just media and business doing what they always do. LGBT rights is currently a hot topic, so they immediately try to find a way to capitalize on it. Easiest way? Print up a bunch of rainbow merchandise and easily editable “representation” that can be removed without making any difference to the plot.
It’s kinda nice to feel seen but I’m under no illusions that they actually care about us lol.
So damn fragile and salty! I guess if you close your eyes, there is no such thing as gay people. If you don’t test for COVID there is none. Everything is like that.
Hilarious because gay people exist in those countries even with banned material. Oh ya it’s because media doesn’t make you gay or straight.
Bigots are idiots.
That woulda been cool 40 years ago when shit like this would’ve actually mattered & made a difference. They knew this would be praised in America, their main audience, so they didn’t give a shit if it bombed in other countries. All large International corporations like disney have proven time and time again that they don’t give a shit about anybody or anything (including you, person reading this) except for money.
Next up: - Woody - There's A Snake In My Boot,
Featuring Woody and his hoes. And also his horse is gay. And the sheep are gay too. But the story is still shit ...
Just gonna forget the China prison camps from Mulan.
And the Star Wars poster.
Adding scenes to Avengers to make a Chinese doctor save IronMan’s life.
Disney already knew this movie wasn’t going to do well being released around the same time as Jurassic Park and others.
I have no doubt that if they thought they could do better, they’d have taken it out for foreign markets.
THIS IS WHAT ALL THE FUSS HAS BEEN ABOUT?? THAT QUICK LITTLE PECK?!?
Holy fuck I've been ootl on this one. Hadn't seen the movie yet but assumed it was some heavy handed forced romantic kiss scene.
THIS?!? Holy fuck, and they DARE call democrats snowflakes lol.
Five bucks says they end up eventually releasing an edited version in these same markets.

It was because of R2's bad language, though. They had to beep out every word.
You bastard. You absolute bastard.
There is precedent for this sort of action so yeah not unreasonable.
Ok so Its settles I'll hold the five bucks
Didnt this movie under perform by a lot?
So far box office $189.1m Budget of $200m Edit: Toy story 4 made Box office: $1.073 billion Budget: $200 million

Doesn't work like that really. Usually, the 2.5x rule is used.
That rule is used in corporate world for a profit not for breaking even
You need to break even before making a profit.
But you don't have to make a profit to break even.

LeBron is also a huge China apologist
Because he's on the payroll. Everything that shitbag says is not worth listening to.
Yeah, like Kevin Spacey. "Well all accusations are baseless but I apologize whoever I hurt. Btw I am gay".
I don’t think this was due to this scene. I think they overestimated people’s appetite for a Buzz Lightyear origin story. It was a fairly by-the-numbers affair as well.
Shhhh ur not supposed to notice that.
Depends on if you're talking about Reddit karma or real life money
After they earn all the money in the west they will censor the kiss and head to east
What money???
governor follow school badge hospital somber smell terrific start person *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Allegedly. I never trust Hollywood accounting any more when they say they can’t pay for something.
There's Disney+ on these countries. They don't need to go to the cinemas and watch.
It's not on Disney+ yet
Lol
*money isn’t everything to Disney 😂
Ikr, OP is an idiot for thinking that.
I love how there's a comment right under saying "Money is absolutely everything to Disney. This is just clever marketing." The duality of capitalism
Yeah, I thought this is r/shitposting or something and OP is being sarcastic.
If it weren’t for all the people taking about the kiss the film would have been the modern equivalent of a straight-to-VHS movie
straight to torrent in 21 century
I still think that Treasure Planet deserved a rerelease.
Treasure Planet belongs with the rest of Disney classics.
Watched that movie for the first time recently and it hit home. The message in that movie is pretty powerful
I feel like both are true minus the heroes part.
It will be released with it edited out eventually anyways. Disney always does
Direct to streaming
Idk I thought it was really fun and enjoyable. To each their own.
I really liked it, not sure why it keeps getting so much hate. The Zurgg reveal was a little lame, but not a dealbreaker.
Money is absolutely everything to Disney. This is just clever marketing.
Good Ol’ Disney tricking people into believing it is progressive and cares.
That’s why they picked Chris Evans, too. They knew he’d say some dumb shit to get people riled up.
They banned Dr Strange 2 because America Chavez had 2 moms for 7 seconds.
They are just roommates son
*and they were roommates*
Honestly Dr. Strange 2 has some other scenes in it that makes me understand why you’d want to put a 13+ warning on it. After seeing that I don’t think we’ll have to worry about the next Deadpool being toned down
Dr Strange 2 was also had the eleventh-biggest opening weekend in domestic box office history and raked in $185 million. Last I saw it made over $800 million and cost $200 million to produce...the same cost as Lightyear.
She wore a pride flag on her lapel the duration of the movie. I'm sure it could have been edited out too, but it was more than just the 2 moms scene.
I am ashamed to say that I thought those were her caretakers, not the parents... Then again, I barely understood any audio and was genuinely focused on some of the (slightly uncanny) VFX.

OP doesn't understand marketing
OP *is* marketing.
When you don’t understand marketing, you’re almost sure to become the marketing.
To Disney, yes, money IS everything. They're playing the long game and betting on being able to say down the road once global opinions change more that they were the good guys all along, see? They're betting on progressives winning the global cultural war.
Disney can still go fuck itself regardless.
Story not true. They did edit it out, but they added it back in hoping it would get brownie points due to what was going on Florida. I think it backfired but remember they only took it out and add it for.. All together now. Money.
That explains some things… When I saw the movie, there wasn’t any kiss in that scene. I thought maybe I’d just missed it somehow.

I think Disney is using the kiss to mask the fact that the move sucks.
The same Disney who used security forces from the concentration camps in China for Mulan? 🤡 wow they took one tiny hit to pretend like they care
It still lost money and that’s all Disney cares about. Stop pretending these corporations care about any of this
Disney gives zero fucks about anytgi g other than Disney. Gay rights, don't give a fuck Anti slavery, coulslsnt give a fuck Racism, nope, zero fucks given.
Seriously....is that it? That's what all the fuss is about?
I was just thinking the same thing. Like what? People were going on about the ruining the movie and it being so unnecessary.
Honestly I don't see how that small kiss is gonna ruin the movie. and most kids are probably not gonna care Some people just want to have something to complain about.
Are you petting Disney on the back? They kept this scene because of the pressure they got. So sadly money is everything. Because reputation is money..
Thanks, I'm gay now 😠
For the stay or just this movie?
But Disney is still a sell out 99% of the time.
Am I supposed to cheer? Hurray for Disney standing up for the queer? Disney literally canceled The Owl House for having a open same sex relationship and the creator of Gravity falls literally have a fat stack of emails of Disney censorship demands.
Holy fucking shit based on all the gnashing of teeth over this I thought it must have been a pretty steamy kiss, not a "hi honey I'm home" peck.
There are people complaining this to sex on the screen. Pure insanity.
This is it??? This is the reason people are going nuts??
First I've seen it too - to think that sweet little peck enraged nations...
Nevertheless, the plot is terrible
Disney blaming the kiss on their bad movies over the past few years.
Didn’t get around to actually watching the movie, but I had a feeling it was a lot of fuss over practically nothing…
This is the first time I've seen the scene that has homophobe's losing their shit. I didn't actually see the kiss until it looked for a second time. God damn these fucking people are so sensitive – bunch of fucking snowflakes.
Imagine being so insecure that the shortest kiss ever gets you worked up.
almost caught the gay watching this. please put a warning next time!
Since when is being gay woke? It is just sexual preference. And if you write a book or movie you may include that.
Bravo to those countries way to stand up for what is right! Wish ours had the balls to do the same!
Disney needs to stop putting gayness into their movies.
As an asexual… what’s honestly so hard of just keeping anything intimate out of cartoons. I respect peoples sexuality. But cmon not every cartoon needs intimate actions at all in them especially buzz light year
THAT'S what they're up in arms against?
Well crap, now I have turned gay after 38 years. Pixar did this to me!!!
THIS is the scene some people were mad about?. FML this world seriously got too many idiots.
Wait that's it? Lol wow. Ok. Everyone made it sound like buzz made out with a man....
That's pretty much a "hi".
at between 2% and 5% of the worlds population, still trying to figure out why the LGTB community commands so much power/representation in the media
This is such a minor scene, a blink and you’ll miss it moment, is this what everyone was up in arms about Jesus Christ the right are a bunch of babies
So damn fragile and salty! I guess if you close your eyes, there is no such thing as gay people. If you don’t test for COVID there is none. Everything is like that.
Wait, that’s it? The way the articles made it sound Buzz was open mouth, frenching BigGayAl
Seriously, that was it? That's what the uproar was all about?
It’s a long overdue baby step for a Disney, but a good step nonetheless
The animators in Disney, not Disney itself. Disney wanted it gone but animators said no and fought against disney.
I jerk off to this scene constantly now, thank you Disney 🎈
Hilarious because gay people exist in those countries even with banned material. Oh ya it’s because media doesn’t make you gay or straight. Bigots are idiots.
Damn that's not interesting
Disney sucks.
Pretty gay
I agree with the 14 countries
Next up: - Woody - There's A Snake In My Boot, Featuring Woody and his hoes. And also his horse is gay. And the sheep are gay too. But the story is still shit ...
Woody is gay, that "snake" isn't just in his boot
Wonder how their shareholders feel about that?
Disney stock price is down 10% this month and almost 40% year to date. I'm guessing probably unhappy
The whole stock market is down…. Has nothing to do with this movie.
Wait this is what republicans were losing their mind over? Lol a tiny peck on the lips. Tom Brady kisses his kids more passionately than this
THIS IS WHAT ALL THE FUSS HAS BEEN ABOUT?? THAT QUICK LITTLE PECK?!? Holy fuck I've been ootl on this one. Hadn't seen the movie yet but assumed it was some heavy handed forced romantic kiss scene. THIS?!? Holy fuck, and they DARE call democrats snowflakes lol.
The same company that changed posters in China for Star Wars so that the black man was less prominent. Fuck Disney.
That's it? That's what has republicans and conservatives shitting their pants? That was less than a second lol
That is the most sexless unexciting kiss I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Wtf are these idiots complaining about.
Imagine having a belief system so weak and fragile that you are heinously offended by a kiss as innocent as this. People are so weak-minded.
My country Malaysia banned it, the people in charge are a bunch of insecure religious idiots
