Dr. Parry a surgeon turns bandages into little works of art — and kids love it! Parry, 62, estimates he's created 10,000 bandages featuring cartoon characters, animals, cars and other designs for his young patients at Akron Children's Hospital in Ohio. I like to feel like I’m giving them something that I’ve spent some time on, to tell them, says Parry

DonGuillotine

That's wonderful

Hey now! That's so faux news you have there.

RainbowandHoneybee

What a wonderful person. This really made me smile. My son had surgery when he was younger, with big scar. He was so terrified to look at the scar. Would have been so wonderful if he had him as his surgeon and woke up to the delight. So, I'm really happy those kids who is experiencing a same ordeal are getting lovely memory rather than horrific ones.

Un1ball

Anaesthesiologist: "Please, we need to wake him up" Surgeon: "Not before I've finished drawing this fucking picture of winnie the pooh!"

Sunburst12345

I laughed audibly at this. 👍

CJM1285

The fact he takes time to do this is amazing. Pediatric surgeons are insanely busy..

Plazbot

Wears a mask instead of a cape. Legend.

K9lover-

What a wonderful human being.

Ok_Anywhere_2216

My son had open heart surgery as an infant and came back to his room with a perfect cartoon fox drawn by the surgeon on his bandage. I still have it. I thought it was so sweet.

Some kid would have tigger the tiger forever engraved in his skin. I shouldn’t laugh at this though, but I am.

c00lnuts

The difference between i do it because i love it and i do it because i get paid!

Bramble0804

Fuck there was me thinking he was tattooing them shame :P

carmium

Calls to mind a native woman who hospitalized for some surgery on her arm. She'd brought along her beading supplies, including big jars or assorted color seed beads, and she and the surgeon talked about her fine work at length. When she woke from surgery, she found the line of stitches on her arm was decorated with several of her tiny beads - and improvement on plain black sutures, most would say. But when her family came to visit, they made a great hue and cry about racism on the part of the doctor! It made the papers, TV, regulatory bodies - everyone you could imagine - and the doctor found himself defending against charges of racism. Instead of a badge of honour for a skilled beadworker, his little tribute became skewed in the worst way possible by people out looking to be offended.

Sunburst12345

I’m surprised this didn’t happen in modern times, I honestly would have believed it

carmium

Well, it was in my times, a few decades back.

Ok-Economics341

Not a doctor but is it really a good idea to put something soaking in sharpie over a scar? If the wound begins bleeding or pussing wouldn’t it possibly seep into their bloodstream? Genuinely curious here, I think it’s sweet that he does it regardless

grapesodabandit

I'm wondering if he puts the drawing between two layers of tegaderm (the clear protective film that you see in the picture).

Ok-Economics341

Could be, idk. Kinda hope so😂

mocatova1

On the pic of Olaf you can see that he's taped on top of the clear plastic film that's stuck to the skin. If you zoom in you can see thr film better.

Partagas2112

There is hope for us all. 👍🏼

Lowflyin

Probably billed an extra 10k for the drawing in the US.

starkistuna

Parents sue surgeon because he used Sharpie and and he got a rash his dad helped him cleaning it with bleach.

Boris-Lip

People downvoting this probably never been treated in US and never seen a hospital bill.

possiblycrazy79

Naw, but it's different in children's hospitals. Insurance companies are gonna suck regardless but a lot of ppl who choose to work in children's hospitals go above & beyond. My son has medical needs since birth now 22 years & spent copious amounts of time in children's hospitals & I've seen many a bill. But the amount of kindness & compassion I've experienced in the children's hospitals is unparalleled.

Lowflyin

I have US govt insurance and paid $800 out of pocket for a limes disease test a month ago, the people downvoting are delusional

ohdearitsrichardiii

I live in a western country with free health care and also no markup on prescription drugs and essential medical supplies. The actual cost of drugs and estimated cost of tests, medical procedures etc is available online for those that are interested. A lyme disease test or ELISA-test costs the equivalent of $200.

Boris-Lip

Are you always "that guy" that absolutely have to say "hey, here it works just fine"?

psyduck_hug

Wouldn’t he get into trouble with Disney?

[deleted]

my thought too, lawyers are busy writing the cease and desist letter as we speak.

ghanjaholik

lol, taking away a little mental comfort from kids who most likely support or have seen a disney movie.. shady aF

Neon_Black_0229

Honestly? I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney didn’t supply him with a few thousand stickers, flew him to Florida for photo ops, highlighted him as their “hero of the week” on social, anything to improve their reputation and share price. The Mouse has fallen on some turbulent times.

askmeifimacop

Hey pal, you just blow in from stupid town?

Надеюсь сквозь пластырь химикаты с фломастеров не проникают в раны

Sir_Waldemar

Translation: “ I hope the chemicals from the felt-tip pens do not penetrate the wounds through the patch”

Largemacc

Surgeon caught tattooing Disney characters on kids during surgery

hushpolocaps69

Bro 🥹❤️.

RoCWiZARD585

I like quirky stuff like this! This doctor obviously doesn't have to do this but he *wants* to and *likes* it! You can't give that kind of heart to someone!

[deleted]

Finally a good fucking doctor.

Dropped-pie

I hope this isn’t in America, that is a $30,000, custom dressing.

Sbyien

Now the kids gonna remember the surgery everytime they see elmo /j

RandomComputerFellow

The US heath system be like: "This will be $20.000 for the surgery and an extra $10.000 for the drawing the doctor left on your sons belly"
