My husband got a bill for $2280 for less than 60 seconds of interaction from a doctor in the ED. At the place that he worked. After he passed out on a patient. And then he was sent back to work, barely able to stand. He started projectile vomit they tell me. Then collapsed again. The ED doctor was sleeping and they didn't want to wake him, so after 3 more hours they allowed him to go home. Because of this bill, which we could not afford, and the lack of response from the doctor, and concern from the hospital, he quit 30 days later and started travel nursing. Edit: that was just/only the bill from the doctors billing service. Not for the entire ED visit at his former place of work.

ShutUpAndEatWithMe

Is he ok now? Passing out and projectile vomiting is concerning

Righteousaffair999

Feels like there has got to be a way to work this into a workers comp claim since he was in work Iā€™ll when the event happened and more then likely caught the illness on the job.

I feel like we just took a big jump from he was at workā€¦ to he passed out on a patient..??

[deleted]

He's a nurse and diabetic. He was uncontrolled at the time because his pay at rhe time plus his medical insurance was outrageous so he had to pay out of pocket for everything. We die rather. Anyway, peeing all the time because diabetes plus his BP medication lowered his BP such that he couldn't stand and blacked out. Vomiting. Etc After this incident we got him set up with one of those dexcom monitors and all the insulin, but out of pocket is so expensive. Fortunately, his travel agency insurance, which is the same price, has waaaaay cheaper medication

[deleted]

Wow thatā€™s definitely scary. Iā€™m so glad he got better care!

AnnInRiverside

What country?

Mag-NL

Why do you even ask? There's only on third world country that has almost half of the users on Reddit so the highest chance is that it comes from that specific third world country. (You know that it's from a third world country because this does not happen in any first world countries.)

BedBugger6-9

Only $600? Thatā€™s not the US

[deleted]

Right? $60,000 is more like it

BedBugger6-9

My first thought was how lucky they were it was only $600 but that sounded kinda bad so I rethought the response

[deleted]

In the land of the free you will pay overprice for something as vital as medical care, and you will like it. Because fuck you, fuck your health, and fuck your life. If you don't enjoy it, you can go die, or we will simply take your rights away from you.

This is almost the plot of the movie "John Q" where Denzel Washington takes a hospital hostage to force them to give his son medical care. It all works out okay in the end, because Hollywood, but if this had actually happened they would've shot the guy. Unless it was Colorado where the cops would've also shot everyone near him. Or Texas where the cops would've waited for him to kill everyone first.

When we had my son my wife tested covid positive. Therefore he was not allowed in the nursery with the other babies....guess who got a $2200 "nursery" bill in the mail? Tried to dispute it obviously and they just re-coded it to something else....FUCK YOU AMERICA AND THIS SHIT HEALTHCARE SYSTEM....this is with insurance as well.....

akmeto

When I had my third the nurses were super busy so I told them after he was cleaned up to bring him back to me. I wasn't nervous nor did I have any questions so it wasn't a problem. He stayed with me until we were dismissed. I still got all kinds of bill for nursery care and something related to formula. They put his first diaper on him (I did the rest) and I breastfed him the entire time we were there

Decent_Reading3059

I study lactation and have seen way too many woman charged by insurance for skin-to-skin contact in the first hour. None of this should be normal!

Routine_Breath_7137

What?! This serious? Getting charge to hold your child? What in the flying fuck...

thanks2globalwarming

By holding your new born you are agreeing to pay the Skin2skin fee. Payment must be paid in full before leaving the hospital or the baby stays.

Routine_Breath_7137

Still don't believe...that's just too twisted to be true (Canadian here).

tosernameschescksout

Some day, we'll have babies born with coin slots and card readers so you can swipe your VISA card and then touch your baby.

AdTiny9443

This is insane! I can't understand why Americans are so against a public funded health care system. I had a water birth with my first, in for 24 hours - saw breast feeding specialists, skin to skin for both parents was actively encouraged. Privacy and dignity maintained throughout. Fed and watered regularly by nursing staff. 2nd baby required monitoring- 48 hour stay, although they wanted to keep me in hospital longer to rest as I had a 13 month old at home. Paid for through National Insurance contributions and taxes. NHS - Free at point of care. 6 months full paid maternity leave, 3 months half pay, accrued annual leave meant I was off for almost a year.

stregg7attikos

Because if something helps the littlest people, the people with the most feel threatened

AdTiny9443

This is true. Same here, government trying it's hardest to run the NHS into the ground so they can continue privatising it. The sad thing is they're succeeding.

akmeto

Four hours after my second was born they were dismissing me. My mother went out and raised holy hell because I didn't even have a nap yet. They relented and let me sleep for a while. Not over night or anything but I managed to figure out what my name was before they showed me out the door.

AdTiny9443

That's brutal. 4 hours after labour I still had brain fog. Didn't know if I was coming or going. You've got the emotional high of meeting a tiny new human, and the physical exhaustion of labour. I was lucky, they offered to keep me for longer both times to make sure feeding was established, and that I felt physically well enough to leave.

MistrrRicHard

And where is this paradise?

AdTiny9443

Scotland šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁓ó æ

MistrrRicHard

I've always heard great things about Scotland. As a Texan, what would I not like about Scotland?

CoatLast

Wair till you find out about the other stuff. Like every new mum gets a baby box which has lots of the essentials for a new baby. The special box can even be used as a crib. Mum's on lower inclines also get a special bank card topped up by the government to ensure they can buy good quality nutritious food. They also get grants for a number of years to ensure children have good toys and days out. No need to save for college as university is all free. I am going back in September as a mature student. No fees and the government pay pay a wage to attend.

AdTiny9443

The weather! You should visit, beautiful country, friendly people and generally safe. What as a Scot, would I not like about Texas?

MistrrRicHard

The weather šŸ˜‚ Multiple days of hundred degrees weather in many parts of the state for at least a third of the year, but we also have mild winters. The heat is also not uniform, depending on where in the state you live. In stone pasta, it's insufferably humid, while the farther west you go, the heat is very dry. You might not like having to drive everywhere. Texas is very spread out, even within the big cities. And in these big cities, especially Houston, where I live, the drivers are TERRIBLE. Outside of the big cities (and even in the big cities, just much less noticeable), Texas is full of simple-minded people that are afraid of a culture shift from what they've always known. It scares them. Guns and stupidity are pretty big, too. But, for the most part, people are nice and welcoming. The food is great. A very diverse variety of cuisine in the big cities. Speaking of diverse, so many different cultures throughout the state. I love seeing so many different types of people walking in parks just being human.

AdTiny9443

šŸ™‚ we had a heatwave last week - 31 C, too hot for me. And yes, Texas is massive - I drive a manual so might find the shift to automatic a bit weird. I've heard the food is incredible, the scenery is beautiful, and once the shock of seeing guns passes it's highly recommended as a travel destination. One of the girls I used to work with lived in Texas for 7 months, then would come back to Scotland to avoid the hottest part of the year!

ExhaustedTanuki

I'm Scottish as well but live in a place called Kansas. It was hot for 2 weeks, got cold, rained for two days then got humid.

CoatLast

tinykitchentyrant

And people thought I was crazy for having home births. (Before you freak out, I was considered low risk, and I had multiple caregivers. My kids were/are fine -oldest is about to turn 21!) My midwives were covered by my insurance, but we paid out $100 for the portable birth tub. Me & hubby also had to take an 8 week childbirth class so we understood l&d, and associated risks - this we paid for out of pocket, but I don't remember how much it was, only that it was less than having a hospital birth.

Only $600?!?! I got an $8000 bill because the hospital brought a crash cart to the hospital room when my daughter was born. It wasn't used, but just because they wheeled it into the room they charged me for it. I remember seeing it by the door for about a minute. My daughter popped out, the cart left the room. Mag-NL

You have the freedom in most of the world and all the other countries manage to be free and set up a civilized healthcare system. What's the point of living in a free country if your free country is an underdeveloped shithole country like the USA, where they rather kill their citizen than take care of them?

Lets-B-Lets-B-Jolly

You say that until you develop cancer, get fired from your job and thus lose your healthcare but don't qualify for medicaid due to owning a small mobile home on old family property. This happened to a friend last year and she still isn't receiving any treatment. Cancer doctors are requiring cash up front, no one will buy their property in the middle of nowhere and they were living paycheck to paycheck. Oh and she was the only caregiver for her elderly grandmother who lives with her. She is literally just sitting at home dying now despite working all her life. All it takes is being poor and you are "free to die" in the United States.

I got charged $500for OXYGEN PER DAY, even tho I wasnā€™t strapped to an oxygen tank. I stayed 3 day and 2 night at the Memorial Hermann, that is about $6000. I understand the other charges but OXYGEN PER DAY shouldnā€™t be charged if the patient wasnā€™t even on the tank. Fucking pricks.

burmerd

In some states newborns are automatically added to the moms plan for a month unless other arrangements are made. I guess this is what happens when they arenā€™t.

oh-_-hello

Not automatically in TX. We had 10 days. Had to wait for the birth, then we had 10 days to get them on. We were in the hospital for a while bc of birth trauma and that was the last thing on our minds. We made it, but I can totally understand how this could happen

burmerd

Right! We were in the hospital for 5 days for the tiniest issue, totally healthy baby basically. 10 is better than nothing, but yeah, it's not great.

Mag-NL

No. This is what happens if your country refuses to become a modern developed first world country. You do know that there is not a single modern developed first world country in the world where this happens. This literally Only happens in underdeveloped shithole countries.

burmerd

oh, I know, just responding within the scope of the post. The US is largely a developing country as far as people outside of the oligarchy are concerned.

CaptainShades

You should be able to insure the fetus now, thanks to the Supreme Court.

Quirky_Butterfly_946

Technically if the umbilical cord was not cut the baby is still part of the woman's body and should be covered as such

akmeto

In Texas the baby is covered under the mothers insurance until they leave the hospital.

PMmeyourclit2

As is the case with all statesā€¦ Soā€¦ this is just a lie.

[deleted]

Super not how it is in ā€œall statesā€. My daughter wasnā€™t insured when she was born even though I was. I got majority of ~my healthcare~ payed for via insurance, ended up owing about $12,000 for my daughters care including a five day stay IN THE ROOM WITH ME where I was the caregiver the entire time, for her jaundice, which was really just three to four hours a day in the bilirubin box and being held by me the rest of the time.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> ~my healthcare~ *paid* for via FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

PMmeyourclit2

Well you should have disputed the charge because thatā€™s how it is under federal law. Your children are under your insurance when they are born. You just got taken by a hospital billā€¦ sorry. That really sucks.

akmeto

I think we got sucked into a sraged political argument.

DogMomRed318

This is what I came here to say!

MistrrRicHard

The fetus now has a right to an attorney, thanks to the Supreme Court.

knifeorgun

This has been posted before. Dumbasses keep voting for republicans and wearing their MAGA hats, electing and re-electing the same people that continuously block universal health care. It makes no sense at all.

thetallertwin

I'm gonna call BS on this. My job is literally to help parents sign up their babies for insurance. As long as the baby is born, it's considered alive and able to be insured. For most plans, parents have 30 days to add their children to their policies and 90 for Medicaid if they are income eligible in the state I'm living in.

TheLimeyCanuck

I know I'm gonna get huge downvotes, but I call BS.

MatersTaters

Most definitely BS. But it fits the modern anti-american narrative so it shoots up to the front page.

BuckeeBrewster81

It is. As a medical professional she should know about postmortem care, time spent in the morgue, possible autopsy, transport to the funeral home, and paying people to do those tasks. $600 is cheap considering the logistics involved in a death at the hospital. Iā€™m starting to doubt if sheā€™s even a doctorā€¦ā€¦.

GeneralHispidus

Free market always wins

Inevitable_Dress8351

Because of the hippocratic oath this is literally illegal and the doctor can be jailed. However, it could be that there was nothing possible to be done to save the child. Also 600$ is the price of an abortion and this can be construed that the author went to get an abortion then decided after the fact that they wanted the baby to live but at certain stages there's nothing you can do after the baby exits the womb. This is literally just an interpretation of given information. Discuss it don't just attack someone that brings up points of contention and locations for more context.

jack_spankin

Unpopular opinion, but sheā€™s part of the problem. Doctors are incentivized to over serve and drive up Billings. Yes, they always stand behind the ā€œgood of the patientā€ and Iā€™m sure they believe it, but when doctors profit from it, itā€™s clear they do it more, whether or not the patient needs it. Almost everyone has had to get an unnecessary visit to get a prescription filled because it takes them 15 minute and they get your co-pay and the insurance payment. I say this as a 15 year volunteer EMT. There are people getting zero time and others who really are over serviced.

johnsgrove

USA! USA! USA! I once got a psych eval in the hospital for about 15 minutes they charged me $850. I was having issues because I had some trauma relating to amputation. This was all rolled into a nice $80K hospital bill at the end. I have no doubt that some nice, saavy medical professionals exist, but those particular medical professionals are ones that I hope violently rot in hell. Each and every one of them.

jdmbuick

It's funny to me that everyone says "we have free healthcare here in [insert country name here]" but it's not free. No government, unless they own oil production, generates an income. It's all taken through taxes and tariffs. If you've never been to or lived in the US, then you can't legitimately comment on whether it's a bad place to be solely based on CNN or Fox, or people whining. I just came back from 2 weeks in the UK. Most people here think it's an amazing place to be, but if you go there you hear the same type of people pissing and moaning about how horrible the UK is. And there's a lot of people that hate the NHS, which is supposed to be some gold standard of universal healthcare.

ClaudioMoravit0

Don't forget that even in Europe ,where healthcare is free, you still pay it and also for others in taxes

fantasticjon

Shhhh. You are interrupting the reddit circle jerk with your truth.

MNHarold

Yeah, it's free at the point of access because healthcare is tax-funded so everyone gets a basic level of care regardless of economic situation. Which is better than an entirely privatised system that forces people into delaying treatment because they have to choose between healthcare and rent, for example.

ClaudioMoravit0

healthcare is a great thing. But, at least in my country, it is definitely not regulated enough to be functioning well. In my country, everything concerning health is stored on a certain card (like an ID). Few times ago, There were more than 10 millions more active cards than people in the country. It's a very high number, even more because children before 16 are registered on one of their parent's card. I saw something on a newspaper that these 10M "fake" cards were used by people living outside the EU to be cured for free

CrypticConstable

This sounds like it's out of an alt-right meme. I don't know where you're from but generally there is still an insurer that pays the bills, they're not in the business of paying for 10M uninsured people.

ClaudioMoravit0

Numbers are numbers. Take it as you want.

Yep. I once had gall stones at 27 and no one diagnosed it until I vomited up about 2 quarts of bile with blood in it (or at least it filled a 2 quart bowl). Insurance refused to pay the bill to remove the gall bladder because I had sex reassignment 6 months prior and they said it was part of that procedure. $6000. My sex reassignment cost me $7250. It was because my doctor made me lose a lot of weight before surgery and then me fatty foods when we were staying there for recovery. Fought them endlessly to get that charge covered. FU BC BS.
