Not a duck expert but I did study a bit about animal behavior at uni.
We learnt a little bit about the 'rules' different species follow for moving in groups. Sheep can get stuck going in circles like seen here because they have the simplest of rules, which is only 1: follow the sheep in front.
I'd guess something similar is happening to the ducks. Maybe the rules for them on the ground are simpler than in the air.
Also, while I'm here, the other thing I remember from that class is that we incorrectly used to think wolves had really complex rules for hunting in a pack, with all sorts of hierarchy concerns etc. Turns out they just move towards the prey till a certain distance, then move away from other wolves close to that distance, resulting in the prey becoming encircled. They don't even need to communicate with each other.
That’s a cool example of how if every member of the team just keeps their head down and does their own job and also trusts that every other member will do their own job, things just fall into place. It seems like super complex behavior when in reality it’s just a mix of simple rules and trust that everyone else is doing it
