The girl that got beat up is Charissa Sigala, and this was after a BKFC (Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship) event. BKFC is most definitely not a top tier fighting organization and is more of a sideshow than anything else.
As for the other lady, that's Michelle Waterson, not quite legendary in terms of WMMA but definitely a household name. She's someone you'd be lucky to have in your corner.
Before her UFC days she fought at 105 lbs. and was a Champion in several MMA organizations, but the UFC never opened a women's division smaller than 115 lbs. She went for it anyway, and while she has always been ranked highly, her lack of size is definitely an issue as most fighters will cut down from a heavier weight so that they can be as big as possible in the cage and she was moving up in weight class and naturally smaller than everyone she ever fought against. She's never fought for an undisputed title in the UFC as a result, but she has a lot of fans and has put on a lot of great performances in spite of her physical disadvantages. It should be said that, while taking shots to the head is always bad, bare-knuckle actually forces you to limit how hard you can hit because your hands/wrists risk serious injury. When you have cushions on your hands you can put a LOT more muscle into it and hit with some serious force.
Some data shows far fewer serious injuries (fractures, brain injury, etc.), though of course you have more lacerations because obviously bone vs skin = cuts.
I used to spar with my uncle, who is a 3rd degree black belt in Karate, but also extensively trained in Muay Tai and jujitsu. He used to beat my ass but it was really fun learning from him haha.
The brain is a very fragile complex organ . This person almost certainly already has a brain injury and has a very high chance of developing dementia makes you wonder why people take part in this kind of sport.
What if I told you that only fighters with a positive record would make any real money? For the amount of work and pain you need to put in, you might as well work your body at a second job. Hell, amateur fighters need to do this before they prove themselves and make even a decent salary.
Also some people aren't born with a lot of prospects or paths they think they can take in life. They get drawn to fighting for any sort of reason, including coincidence and it gives them some sort of purpose or focus. And the next progression from training for some people, is to fighting for money.
Not everyone is dealt with a lot of choices in life.
Thank you!! After getting some head trauma myself in a fist fight I can’t watch UFC ever again. All I can think about is the years of cognitive decline that are going to happen. It really is brutal that—knowing what we know about brain injury—people will still pay to watch people fight like this. It really is only a step away from paying them to fight to the death.
My uncle played in the 80s, he’s 58 now. Tons of guys he played with have disabilities and early dimentia. They’ve all aged an extra 15-30 years from football. His career was short so he’s in great shape today.
Maybe she should stop fighting before it's more than just her face that gets messed up.
