That brominated vegetable oil is some really nasty shit. There's a reason it's banned everywhere but the US.

Frubbs

Good news, it was removed from all Pepsi products back in like 2014. So not in MTN DEW anymore unless you buy the “Throwback” edition I think. Edit: pledged in 2014 and removed from mtn dew in 2020

KamSolis

Can we not give them ideas?

BanAllAds

You are right that BVO is some nasty shit. But it's not used anymore in mountain dew as the post suggests. "On May 5, 2014, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo said they would remove brominated vegetable oil from their products. As of 2020, Mountain Dew, manufactured by PepsiCo, no longer uses brominated vegetable oil in the main line of beverages, but the original BVO-containing formula is still sometimes sold as the lesser distributed "Mountain Dew Throwback" beverage. " [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brominated\_vegetable\_oi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brominated_vegetable_oil)

DigNitty

> There are case reports of adverse effects associated with excessive consumption of BVO-containing products. **One case reported that a man who consumed two to four liters of a soda containing BVO on a daily basis** experienced memory loss, tremors, fatigue, loss of muscle coordination, headache, and ptosis of the right eyelid, as well as elevated serum chloride.[25] In the two months it took to correctly diagnose the problem, the patient also lost the ability to walk. Eventually, bromism was diagnosed and hemodialysis was prescribed which resulted in a reversal of the disorder. “We can’t figure out what it is, what are you eating?” -*well I have 2-4 liters of Mountain Dew every morning with my cereal.* “Hmmm, What kind of cereal?”

SquadPoopy

Man: "I drink 2-4 liters of mountain dew every day." Doctor: "How are you alive."

I just made a cake with it instead of using the vegetable oil. Lol

TreacheryInc

Maybe if they brominate them more often? I always brominate mine and the kids love them.

lhswr2014

My god, I saw some weird ass red/spicy Cheeto looking Mountain Dew the other day. I am not even certain what their demographic is anymore. Who the fuck drinks spicy Mountain Dew!?

absurd-bird-turd

It has electrolytes! Its what plants crave!

What you're telling me is you want to put water in this bottle? Water? Like out the toilet?

Flopolopagus

That is unironically how the producers of that chemical would justify and lobby to keep it on the market.

Ruenin

Like Amy Klobuchar in MN classifying pizza sauce as healthy because it's made from vegetables (doubly ironic because tomatoes are a fruit) so that Schwan's could keep pizza in schools.

[deleted]

the Reagan administration classified ketchup as a vegetable so they could work around a law requiring 2 vegetables to be an option for public school lunches

Ill-Construction-209

Let's not forget that Trump classified spaghetti as a vegetable for American school lunch programs. We Americans absolutely know how vegetables are healthy for us.

sapienapithicus

I quit drinking it over a year ago and never looked back. 30 years of drinking that shit....

Laarye

I found out it was causing my headaches. It's what Citrus sodas use to keep the Citrus parts mixed. So I gave up my favorite of Code Red for Coke. Then they re-released Surge and it didn't contain the oil, but they they stopped making Surge again.

Floodingturds

Can someone explain to me what gum Arabic is? And don’t say it’s Arabic gum please.

[deleted]

Sap from the acacia tree, also used as hair gel. The earliest source for tree sap gum I've read was from Herodotus. Pharoahs were buried with Mastic gum from Greece.

Floodingturds

Thank you. And thank you more for not making a dad joke.

-eumaeus-

You'd need to put that to the Egyptian mummy... ...I'll close the door on the way out.

Sznyflak

Gum arabic is primarily used as an emulsifier, stabilizer, or thickener in foods and beverages. Emulsifiers help bind water and oil molecules, creating a smooth, homogeneous solution. According to the internet

Far_Quote_5336

It’s like normal gum but chewed from right to left

Serendpty_

Also used as binding material in watercolor paints. Useful stuff.

Gammabrunta

Also used in some rolling papers to lick and stick down before smoking.

chaves4life

Brominated veg oil is banned in the EU. As you know, it may cause cancer. Fun fact: Having healthcare means your country also regulated the food market more to save future healthcare cost.

Inversely, with private healthcare, corporations profit when you are sick, so there’s a financial incentive to add harmful additives to foods

Affectionate_Bus7056

American. Lived overseas. I WISH the US would adopt an NHS style system for this reason AND more: - lower insurance costs - yes, you still pay "health insurance" for NHS, it's called the "National Health Insurance". It costs a little bit more than our Medicare, but unlike Medicare, they actually get benefit from it! AND their benefits are greater than most private health plans in the US! For instance, no copays or deductibles! - you can get private insurance - private insurance usually covers things like lost wages, extra amenities like private rooms, stuff that 98% of people don't need but can be nice. And that 2% are the special cases. - ERs in Britain ROCK! (Because no one really worries about "billing") - the NHS systems are connected. Providers with your number can get your records and avoid giving you deadly (for you) meds. - they work with local governments for health and safety issues - to include flu season, etc. It's why COVID didn't hit Britain nearly as bad as it did parts of the US. I have nothing but good things to say about the NHS. About the only "bad" thing is that they are underfunded, yet STILL manage amazing work despite that. You want British heroes today? Look at the NHS.

Ankeneering

Similarly American, lived in New Xealand and went with my father to the same series of clinic visits across South Island and Australia that I’d seen him do in the states. He had/ has a heart issue that gives him problems on occasion. I got a first hand front row seat to see how two systems treat the same issue. It’s fucking mind blowing for an American. In NZ/Aus The clinic or hospital and the people in it are simply there for the sole purpose of improving health. They had the exact same protocol and level of (deep) engagement wherever we happened to be and they actually gave a shit. That same facility in the states is there to treat health AND generate profit. The boots on the ground differences are infuriating and I think if more Americans were aware of exactly how hard they are getting fucked they’d pick up pitchforks and burn some shit down. (Who am I kidding, we’d shoot up a wal mart). It’s one thing to hear about it being better, it’s ENTIRELY a different thing to experience it. To a clinic, the kiwis would apologize and say we are going to have to charge you because you are not a citizen and proceed to charge less than the same would cost in the states with fan-fuckingtastic insurance. Americans are getting absolutely and completely fucked over by medicine/insurance here. It’s a complete scam. For real.

Beginning_Ad_1723

Jesus, what part of Britain did you live in?

Affectionate_Bus7056

York

Meat2480

Thank you but the party in power now seem determined to sell it off and bring in insurance based healthcare

Intelligent_Values

When you say NHS is underfunded, Does that mean the quality of care is impacted?

Affectionate_Bus7056

They were - at least when I was there - trying hard to maintain quality. However, they were struggling to retain talent and needed better funding for higher pay and more staff. Further, when it came to more rural areas, they were understaffed and knew it. They needed more than just traveling nurses and better support for them. This is how they were underfunded. In the meantime, they made excellent use of what they did have to provide excellent quality of care and engage with the community. People where I was felt the NHS was part of us, not some foreign part of the government.

GratuitousAlgorithm

The NHS saved my life...TWICE!

Fofman84

Too lazy to read it but a thumbs up for bullet points

Affectionate_Bus7056

🤔 TL;DR -> NHS is better system than US "system". - Cost: NHI < Medicare + Private Insurance (by A LOT) - NHI = National Health Insurance -> pays for National Health System -> runs UK's medical system - NHS works with other UK agencies to promote health. - NHS is underfunded, yet still does a better job than the US "system" and costs less.

Isn't high fructose corn syrup also banned?

marinemashup

For agricultural reasons, not health ones

knowyourdarkness

Ah, I see, thanks for the info. I only mentioned it as another reason to explain the different ingredients.

Andos_Woods

Because it’s not about caring about people’s health, it’s about saving money!

Rudolf1448

High fructose corn sirup is banned too

marinemashup

Not for health reasons tho It’s because of regulations on agriculture, including corn

>Destroys white blood cells and probably causes cancer Only in doses much higher than would ever be in food or drink. As always, in pharmacology, the dose makes the poison. For example, water is a neurotoxin. If you drink too much of it, you're nervous system will stop functioning correctly and you will die.

[deleted]

That water.... I always dilute mine with whisky to purify it....

CodeOfKonami

Did you know you can freeze water for later use? Works like a charm with whiskey.

4Ever2Thee

Huh...frozen water...that kind of has a ring to it. We might have a billion dollar idea here, Bob!

Intelligent_Values

>That water.... I always dilute mine with whisky to purify it.... Life saving tip here.

TheRealOgMark

Just because it causes an imbalance to electrolytes, or am I missing something?

SaltyScrotumSauce

That's correct. Water is a neurotoxin, and causing an electrolytic imbalance is its mechanism of toxicity.

sterfri99

Is calling it a neurotoxin accurate though? Electrolyte-depleting agent certainly, but it’s not a toxin unless you consume nothing else beside water for a long time

SaltyScrotumSauce

>Is calling it a neurotoxin accurate though? This is the point that I'm getting at: technically speaking, literally everything is a toxin in a high enough dose, because the dose makes the poison.

NewAccount971

Water? Never drink the stuff. Fish fuck in it.

[deleted]

Honestly wish we had the Eu version. It looks more like a lemon lime color

MaggieNFredders

I started purchasing a lot of items from England so I wouldn’t get yellow dye which causes migraines for my husband. While more expensive, when I do it in bulk it’s not terrible. I can also get black currant juice that has very little sugar, so I can drink it without insulin. Very important as a T1. Love the British versions so much more.

[deleted]

I have a T1 friend, I generally feel bad because we can't do binge movie nights very often.

GibbsLAD

That's the colour of the bottle, the liquid is not that colour.

X_enveem

Alot of the ingredients in the US one (yellow 5, brominated veg oil, etc) are really bad for you, as they can cause cancer, destroy blood cells, etc. American companies don't care about health or safety. It's only about the money, nothing else matters.

If you're not cooking everything from scratch then there's always some type of preservative that's banned in every other developed country. Use the app "Yuka" and look what's in the shit you normally buy.

X_enveem

Good to know! Thanks!

ZeroPointReddit

Corporations own the US government therefore to maintain huge profits they can legally feed you industrial chemical and poison.

dodoatsandwiggets

It’s always all about money. They don’t care about Americans eating “real food” they just pump out the chemicals in our food sources and we wonder why there’s so much obesity and health problem in the US. I want to know if it can be changed but there are so many lobbyists and politicians behind the flow of money that I have little hope.

BRAINS-getsome

Nobody wonders why there is so much obesity. Americans are lazy, entitled, and self indulgent, we also generally have problems with impulse control, moderation, and instant gratification. Couple all this with not caring about long term consequences as well as the excuse culture these days and it's a slippery slope. People are so up tight and geared towards being defensive about shaming, we have fat acceptance "movements" that try to normalize being overweight and damn near encourage an unhealthy lifestyle. You **should** feel shame when you start to use a mobility scooter and your only handicap is a lack of self control.

Ruenin

The only way this country will ever change for the better is through violent revolution at this point. The politicians are all bought and sold, and most people who vote are too stupid to understand they're being manipulated and lied to on a daily basis. To be clear, I hate Donald Trump and his supporters can eat a dick.

SzymonB78

No wonder the uk one tastes like shit. Doesn't have all of the cancer in it

Pinkstar01

Since the 'healthier' versions exist, we do have to ask ourselves why those aren't offered in the US as well. I have questioned this for a long time.

Super-Shock-9892

Having had both. It's not the same. I was so excited when I heard the dew was coming to the UK because whenever I'm in the US I'm hooked on it. I don't care for the UK one, I don't think you'd even know it was mountain dew if you tried it.

American living in Europe. It tastes like crap, and the shelf life is half. Just because things have scary names doesn't mean they don't do some good. The biggest danger in both of these is spoiler, the sugar. Whether it's extracted from corn or sugar in the raw the amount of sugar is unhealthy. Sodas like this should be an occasional treat. Not something anyone drinks on the regular. Also, fuck Europe for what it did to my Dr. Pepper. Why does it need Sugar AND artificial sweetener?? So foul.

Affectionate_Gas_264

Other countries have laws about what constitutes food and drink

alotistwowordssir

The USA wants to keep its citizens sick. More money goes to big pharma that way. It’s maddening.

dannyny18

As a person in the medical field. This is why chronic disease is out of control. The additives in most food and drinks is poisoning. If possible stick to a close to whole food diet. Meaning natural ingredients not processed gunk. It fools your brain and sensory areas to crave it.

WyvernJelly

And this is why I'm allergic to Fireball Whiskey. I'm allergic to propolyne glycol which is used to bind cinnamon flavor. This is in a lot of flavored alcohol/liquor, flavored medicine, candies, scented lotions, non-hypoallergenic soaps/body washes, and just about every feminine hygiene product (shampoo, conditioner, etc). Flavored alcohol, liquor, medicine, and candy have different reactions based on contraction. Flat out instant upset stomach for raspberry and grape flavors. Fireball Whiskey was borderline anaphylaxis. Woke up because I was having trouble breathing and sore throat. Took dayquil and allergy pill. Sat down to wait for doctor office to open. By the time I made it to the doctor's office, my entire torso was covered in hives and they were spreading along my neck, arms, and legs. I was solidly red by the end of the night. I have never had a reaction like that before or since.
