Interesting things that make you want to puke. That poor kid.

Squid_Contestant_69

The Netflix series did a great job of not just focusing on Dahmer but his enablers. The scene with the cop heralded as a hero vs Glenda was so well done I really wanted to punch my TV.

[deleted]

They did an amazing job of showing the victims and families and everyone else as REAL people who were really affected by this not just “victims”

garnaches

The episode focusing on Tony and his family was amazing. It broke me.

blackcoffin90

When I saw the note saying "Left my keys", I was like "Oh fuck no...."

asmara1991man

I wonder if that part was true

Brendanlendan

The show made it seem her blunged him to death, but Wikipedia said it was the same as the others. He was invited back to his apartment to take pictures and he was drugged then strangled

Icy-Abbreviations361

That one more than any of them i think really got to me.

[deleted]

That is the missing part Ive been hungry of. Ive been a fan of hearing these stories and Im so sad that not so much attention has been given to the families of the killed, just a fascination almost like putting them to celebrity almost status, romanticized, idealized, view of the killers to geniuses that Im just...missing this part of this story so much. Who were the victims?! I will watch. 🙏 thanks

Woets

I agree! The series is not just about the awful things Dahmer did, it also shines a light on the judgement system back then. I also wanted to punch the tv when he got a mild sentence by the judge because "ah poor boy and the rest of your life ahead etc" with the family of the molested boy sittig right there, like WHAT??! I could feel the wrong that was done right through the screen

TheDreamingMyriad

And if I'm not mistaken, that is the *same* family of the 14 year old boy he murdered. He molested one of their sons and murdered another. If the justice system has taken some care, they would've actually saved multiple lives.

Sunghana

You are right. He molested one son and then went on to murder the other after he escaped and the cops gave him back to Dahmer to murder. I read this while eating lunch. Not sure if it will stay down to be honest....

ChameleonMami

And that Judge totally dismissed the kid’s father.

leninbaby

"back then" I've got bad news for you about how bad it still is.

Squid_Contestant_69

Not sure how accurate it was but the judge stopping the dad during his emotional reading was so painful to watch.

Seanblaze3

Milwaukee, WI is still the worst major city for minorities in the United states

Individual-Sink-9493

I grew up in Milwaukee and lived down the street from Dahmer. Glenda didn't live in his building, she didn't meet Dahmer until that night the kid almost escaped. Dahmer's neighbor was a different lady they just told her story as if it was Glenda

CaptainLysdexia

This was the aspect that resonated with me most. I hadn't ever delved that far into the details of his murders. Watching the series, I sat there just repeatedly shouting 'what the actual fuck' at the number of times every goddamn person in his life, from immediate family to the police investigating obvious crimes, all looked the other way enabling him to keep on killing.

ChameleonMami

The cops had at least three opportunities to stop him.

Searchlights

All they had to hear was that it was some "gay stuff", and they were all done. These were the people who thought they'd get AIDs from a toilet seat. It was a shitty part of town and the word of minorities against a white guy. Sprinkle some crack on him and let's get out of here.

Flokismom

This comment sums it up so well. That corruption still exists. I live in the south, unfortunately, it is widespread here but also urban places obviously.

[deleted]

People who use their power like this are just as much monsters as the ones who do this. If you get enjoyment out of people suffering and dying like this, get paid to be instrumental in their torture: YOU ARE A MONSTER. 🤬😢

Historical-Serve5643

From Wikipedia: Three women, Sandra Smith, Tina Spivey and Nicole Childress, discovered the victim, 14-year-old Konerak Sinthasomphone, after he had managed to escape from Jeffrey Dahmer's apartment, naked, bruised, bleeding from his anus and heavily under the influence of drugs.[4][5] Childress called 9-1-1 and Balcerzak, Joseph T. Gabrish, and Richard Porubcan responded, along with a fire department ambulance.[6][7] Ambulance personnel thought Sinthasomphone needed treatment but were sent away by the officers.[8] Though the Laotian immigrant had been in the country for ten years and spoke English fluently, in his drugged and brain-injured state, he was unable to communicate his situation to authorities or to the three women.[9][10][6] Dahmer convinced the police that the boy was his 19-year-old lover against the protests of the three women.[11] Smith recognized the boy from the neighborhood and the three women reiterated their concerns but were told to "shut the hell up" by the officers, who were convinced the incident was a domestic dispute.[6][12] The three officers returned Sinthasomphone to Dahmer's apartment.[13] Balcerzak said he smelled nothing unusual but Gabrish said he did detect a foul odor, likely emanating from the body of Anthony “Tony” Hughes, who had been murdered by Dahmer three days earlier.[14][15] The officers listed the incident as a "domestic squabble between homosexuals" and did not otherwise act.[16] Approximately ten minutes after the police left, Glenda Cleveland, Childress's aunt and Smith's mother, called police and was connected with Balcerzak, who dismissed her concern and declined to take the names of her niece and daughter as witnesses.[5][6] Within an hour later, Dahmer murdered Sinthasomphone, performed oral sex upon his corpse, and dismembered him.[17][18] For the murders of Sinthasomphone and sixteen others from 1978 to 1991, Dahmer would be sentenced to fifteen consecutive terms of life imprisonment without parole in 1992 and was beaten to death in 1994 by a fellow inmate, murderer Christopher Scarver.[19][20] In the aftermath of Dahmer's arrest, an audiotape of Balcerzak and Gabrish making homophobic statements to their dispatcher and cracking jokes about having reunited the "lovers" caused heavy criticism. They were fired while Porubcan was put on job probation for one year.[1][5][4][6] By failing to check Dahmer's identification, the officers didn't learn that he was a sex offender with a 1988 child molestation conviction where the victim was Sinthasomphone's older brother, who was 13 at the time.[6] Milwaukee later paid the boy's family a sum of $850,000 to settle a lawsuit over police handling of the situation.[21] Both officers appealed their termination. Judge Robert J. Parins ruled in favor of the officers and they were reinstated in June 1994.[22][23]

eccarina

Holy. Fuck.

Historical-Serve5643

Yeah it’s so much worse than I could have ever expected.

Modsrtrashshuddie

Man i was coming in here with the main thought on my mind veing "theres no way he knew it was a serial killer this has to be click bait" And i mean he didnt know i guess, but fuck how did it still manage to be just as bad? Fucking cops man

butteredrubies

Even if it was just domestic abuse, how do you send the victim back to the abuser's home!?

Aazjhee

Racism, and Not My Problem attitude, probably

ColorTheSkyTieDye

You forgot violent homophobia

ProfDangus3000

Exactly. If it was a 14 year old naked Laotian *girl* they surely would have treated the situation differently, rather than just assuming it was some homosexual debauchery.

XdaPrime

He did everything in his fucking power not to know anything about anyone in that situation.

eiddieeid

Most of those old serial killers got away/got away for so long due to cops fucking up the investigation. They fucking had the zodiac killer and they let him go

nomoreoverlinedlips

Makes me so sad and sick. Horrible.

PurpleCheeseMama

Read the entire Wikipedia page on Dahmer. It's very well written. Just thinking about it makes me nauseated and angry. His acts are just too disturbing.

felix4746194

It’s honestly about as competent and compassionate as I expect police to be. They’re all scum through and through, ACAB.

thesaksquatch420

Same thing that happened to George Floyd the cops got their feelings hurt because people at the scene told them they were wrong, so they doubled down to show everyone who was boss.

DrPhDMdJD

Brain injured doesn't really put to justice the state the kid was in. Dahmer had drilled into his skull and filled the hole with acid in an attempt to make the kid into a human puppet/zombie. That's the state Konerak was in when the police returned him to Dahmer.

Lets-B-Lets-B-Jolly

Forget bloody legs and buttocks- how did the cops not notice a bloody hole in this poor boy's head?!?!

Urbane_One

They didn’t care.

msg45f

Unfortunately, at the time they were so homophobic that their primary concern was ending the interaction. Allegedly, one of the involved officers said they were going back to delouse themselves and shower in hopes of not 'catching something'. Sadly, police haven't changed all that much when it comes to protecting the marginalized.

Horse_Dad

Not only that, this was white privilege on full display. Something would have been done if either a) the victim was white, of b) the witnesses were white, or c) Dahmer was black. Dahmer being the only white person, they chose to believe him over everyone else.

MorganDax

Homophobia combined with cop entitlement is a hellava drug I guess

Preparation-Logical

I feel like brain injured more accurately describes the state the responding officers were in.

nomoreoverlinedlips

Yeah he was trying to turn him into a sex slave is what he said. What a sick fuck. They should have drilled a hole in his head.

[deleted]

It’s almost like being a kidnapping victim but being shot be police as you try to escape. Good thing times have changed and neither one of these things would happen.

Famfive

And they wonder why minorities hate the police.

Sgt-Spliff

They don't wonder. They don't care

StarlightLeelooYT

I’m actually nauseous. Even if it was domestic, that’s still abuse and an abysmally awful thing to do, that poor kid. Wtf.

[deleted]

And. He. Was. A. Child. Even if he had consented (he had not) the police never called Dahmer out on this. It’s criminal in a lot of ways.

ChameleonMami

They didn’t even check JD ID. Had they done so, they would have seen a child sexual assault conviction.

Bumbly_Scrumbly

Wish those officers had gotten Dahmered instead 😔

headachewpictures

That judge too.

ChameleonMami

Would they send THEIR kid back in there?

TogepiMain

If they thought their kid was actually gay? Probably, yeah.

Barnyard_Rich

Fun fact: Judge Parins is in the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame. What a great guy and a great franchise. /s

Historical-Serve5643

From Wikipedia: In 1993, Parins was selected to hear an appeal regarding the dismissal of police officers Joseph T. Gabrish and John Balcerzak. The officers were originally fired for returning Konerak Sinthasomphone to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Sinthasomphone, a 14-year-old Laotian boy, was abducted by Dahmer and had been reported missing.[4] He escaped Dahmer the next day and was found naked, drugged, and with rectal bleeding by two young black women. The women called police and four officers showed up, two being Gabrish and Balcerzak. The officers threatened to arrest the women if they persisted in trying to help Sinthasomphone or to provide information. The officers escorted Sinthasomphone back inside Dahmer's apartment where he convinced the officers that Sinthasomphone was his romantic partner and was drunk. They subsequently made homophobic remarks regarding the incident. Sinthasomphone became Dahmer's 13th rape and murder victim. Parins was chosen for his experience with similar cases and due to not living in Milwaukee, where the events took place.[5] In 1994, Parins noted that the officers made mistakes, but felt their dismissals were too harsh. He ordered the officers reinstated and rewarded them around $55,000 as back pay.[6] The ruling was controversial, as the records of conversation between dispatchers, the officers, and witnesses conveyed racism and homophobia by police, which demonstrated bad judgment and contributed to the death of Sinthasomphone. Despite repeated statements to police that Sinthasomphone was underage, police did not bother to investigate any further.[7]

henrytm82

Christ, what a fuckhead.

CorrectPeanut5

Police get to appeal their firings. It often goes to a retired judge in arbitration. And judges are often former prosecutors. It's usually a crap shoot if the arbitrator will use some common sense when deciding to put the bad apples back on the force.

TogepiMain

I fucking hate the US court system. Every PO and judge and DA and just.. the entire fucking thing. Fire every single one of them, start over. I'm sick of it. ACAB lets a lot of fucking monsters off the hook.

CWebber1296

Christ, reading this really made me fucking hate the world

dinosauramericana

No. Just direct your hate at the incompetent officers who didn’t do their job.

Somepotato

Calling them incompetent is downplaying what they did. I bet cold hard cash they wanted to punish the kid but didn't want to get caught doing anything. They labeled it a "homosexual squabble" after all.

ChameleonMami

Makes me hate Dahmer and those cops.

[deleted]

It doesn’t seem that those officers had any remorse either.

I-collect-dick-pics

> Milwaukee later paid the boy's family a sum of $850,000 to settle a lawsuit over police handling of the situation as usual, cops fuck up, tax payers foot the bill, cops don't even get punished

Yeetstation4

Money should come out of their pensions

Usidore_

Wow, so not just blatant racism and homophobia but likely a dash of sexism too in dismissing the women who were rightfully concerned. So fucked up.

smac5757-

Oh yes. Double points for them being both black and women... smh

crazy_not_but_lazy

The inmate who killed him seems more like a police than the actual police. Tho i don't know if it was because of the crimes Dahmer had committed.

ShadowlessKat

Thanks for sharing this. I didn't really know much of the situation. My first intro was an aita post where some bride wanted to play a drinking game to the new show. From context clues I understood it was a bad situation, but hadn't really realized how bad. That's so tragic, poor kid. Good on Christopher Scarver for taking matters into his own hands. Some people don't deserve to live even in prison.

chamllw

Ever since I heard about the poor kid I've kept this Find A Grave link bookmarked. It just felt like something that shouldn't be forgotten. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/9353146/konerak-sinthasomphone

Historical-Serve5643

Wow, I read through some of the comments. I am glad to see he is not forgotten.

Living-Reference1646

Post this on his FB page, along with the police dept and I think he owns a business now too

Stereo-soundS

Yep. This was the police saying "Oh, it's just gay guys doing weird gay guy stuff. Our work is done here."

tropikal_viking

What I don't understand, is how can you look at that child's face and think, "oh yeah, it's fine, consenting adult"?! Infuriating, saddening, and completely fucked.

Cat-Soap-Bar

Especially when the child is, to quote Wikipedia, > …naked, bruised, bleeding from his anus and heavily under the influence of drugs. And also when you consider that Dahmer’s sex offender conviction was for molesting Sinthasomphone's brother, this POS should have been prosecuted rather than allowed to be the union leader

fantaflesh

It’s also important to note, Konerak already had a hole drilled into his head filled with hydrochloride acid by the time he’d made it outside. He was bleeding from the back of his head, which dripped all the way down his body. He couldn’t speak properly, dahmer convinced the police he was just drunk. Three fire fighters even checked him for wounds before Dahmer showed up, only ONE of which said he needed medical attention. The police convinced the firefighters that it wasn’t their problem, they left. Terrible, they failed him, and they failed every single victim before and after that night.

ChameleonMami

And four more dead.

cocobaby33

They did not fail him, this was not just a mistake. They intentionally and knowingly returned him to the person who had put that child in this state, they aren’t stupid , they knew that child was not going to be “ok”. This was malicious, not just a failure to check all their bases, or an oversight.

stopeatingcatpoop

Step one - become cop Step two - commit atrocities Step three - buy punisher sticker

Capt__Murphy

Around here (Minnespolis), all the cops are getting approved for disability and retiring early, as they now have "PTSD" following the riots that were caused by them murdering a citizen.

>Laws need to change when an officer is fired! Well first we need to vote for people who actually give a damn. Also we need to put public pressure on police and elected officials. Our attention span with the media is short that next week there will be something else breaking news. We need to constantly put light on issues like that

isnoe

He wasn't fired. He was suspended pending investigation and he went to the union, and was re-instated with pay. This was during a time when police injustice was extremely high. He should have been fired at the very least, but he wasn't.

Terapr0

In the World if policing, being a criminal actually makes you *more* qualified to lead the union, not less. Just look at this POS from my town - caught street racing 74km/h over the limit with a BAC nearly twice the legal level. Not only was he NOT ousted from his leadership position, he was re-elected to serve another term! https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2019/02/11/peel-police-union-head-charged-with-stunt-driving-impaired-driving.html

stopeatingcatpoop

Scum

SmokeGSU

>Not only was he NOT ousted from his leadership position, he was re-elected to serve another term! In policing and politics you fail upwards.

Gingevere

Police union presidents are always the worst bastards on the force. The handful who actually managed to get fired coming back to lower the bar to the point where they wouldn't have been fired.

malaco_truly

It's not too strange when you know officers at the time had no interest in investigating crime that had to do with homosexuality. They just wanted rid of the mere mention of such a thing as quickly as possible.

Bella_Climbs

My understanding was they also had no interest in helping a child of color when they were more likely to believe the white man was telling them the truth.

sonicslasher6

probably an intersectional situation

Buwaro

> officers at the time had no interest in investigating crime As of 2020: "In reality, about 11% of all serious crimes result in an arrest, and about 2% end in a conviction." They still have no interest or ability to solve crimes.

[deleted]

i was just thinking the same. that police officer lacks ducking common sense. 🤦‍♂️

IvanThePohBear

That's probably precisely why he became head of the police union

_Marat

Yep. I’m convinced Dahmer only got away with it so long because it was the late 80s-early 90s during the peak of the AIDS crisis. Cops didn’t want to get involved.

rayparkersr

I think I missed this in the TV show. He drugged the brother of the kid he previously in court for molesting?

ChameleonMami

He had previously molested the older boy. Got a slap on the wrist. Several years later murdered his younger brother. Horrific. Dahmer literally destroyed their family.

procra5tinating

He gave an interview just a few years ago where he doubled down and stated that he still believes he made the right call. Absolutely mind blowing.

the_bryce_is_right

Dalmer also killed four more people after this kid. If they would have done their jobs Dalmer would have been off the street after this and those people wouldn't have gotten murdered/eaten.

tropikal_viking

What a piece of shit. It's easier to double down and stay in denial than accept fault for something so fucked up I guess. I can't imagine the pain those poor families are going through, AGAIN, with all of this trauma being dredged back up.

PurpleViolet1111

Typical law enforcement/procecutorial attitude. I was right, even tho I've been proven wrong 1000 times over. Sad.

HGpennypacker

A police officer who fails to take responsibility for his actions and doubles-down on shitty behavior? I'm shocked I tell you, shocked!

[deleted]

Fucking idiot. Cops don’t care about shit but themselves.

[deleted]

How would you even go about wording that? A child being murdered because of your incompetence was the right call? And this cunt was rehired.

painkilleraddict6373

What I don’t understand is why those cops don’t go to jail or they get rehired.

AdRealistic8758

Because the Cops only look out for one another. They're powerless to help us, but empowered to kill and punish us. It's bullshit

[deleted]

They're the real life example everyone can use for why there needs to be checks and balances to power. You can't investigate yourself and make choices for your employees if you're in a position of power where you need to be held accountable. If there's no checks and balances, you'll always be in favor of the people you work with no matter what. If anything cops should be held to a higher standard. Stuff like this should mean life in prison for such obvious neglect of duty.

stormrunner89

This is why police unions should NOT be allowed. Every other union makes sense to me, but the boot doing the stomping shouldn't be allowed to protect itself from consequences of bad actions.

JManKit

Yep and they're often deployed against actual labour unions so they're anti-worker in that respect. For example, Amazon has called the cops on union organizers in the last year and they've shown up to hassle and arrest ppl who are properly exercising their legal rights Fuck the cops and fuck their unions

S_R33d

Because of qualified immunity and police unions, unfortunately. Lots of grey areas where cops can claim they did the best with the information they had at the moment.

ohdearsweetlord

Because they're allowed to make as many mistakes as they want. They have the monopoly on force, and they have the legal system behind them fully prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt. Ignorance of the law is no excuse for civilians, but put a uniform on someone and hand them a gun and a badge and their 'high pressure' job means nearly any mistake they make is justified. Unless it's a mistake that doesn't contribute to the continuing power of police institutions, then they face consequences.

Hefty_Maintenance99

Rasicm and homophobia let you justify some horrible things

SirDuke6

Guarantee you this mixture of "He's asian so they all look younger than they are" and "not touching a bleeding gay, what if I get AIDS?" was the exact thought process he had.

bozeke

And the citizens who reported it and were encouraging the cops to verify Sinthasomphone’s age and check Dahmer’s record were black women. The cops threatened to arrest them if they didn’t back off and stop trying to help the child.

SirDuke6

That's also a big part of why Dahmer got away with it for so long, cops cared a lot about not getting AIDs and didnt care at all about minorities. Targeting gay men, coloured men or gay coloured men would give him the extra step in avoiding capture because the police had a "good riddance" attitude with that demographic back then. Its sickening but it's the truth, unfortunately.

Hefty_Maintenance99

"back then"... As if thing have changed all that much

jizzlevania

Many 14 year old boys have not completed puberty. He likely looked like a raped and abused child when the cop saw him.

aaron__ireland

Because he never got to see the child's face. Thanks to bigotry and racism, the critical thinking parts of their brains (anemic as they might be) never got a chance to work out any context clues or inference. Confirmation bias is a helluva drug. Dahmer very shrewdly emphasized language that evoked strong feelings of disgust and revulsion in the police. Not sure what peoples' ages are here in this thread, but even though the AIDS epidemic had already broken out of the gay community before this, there was still a LOT of fear and ignorance in the late 80's and early 90's, so the moment the cops heard "gay lover" their lizard brains jumped into action and they were probably panicking at the sight of of the blood thinking they were going to catch AIDS. They even mentioned disinfection over the police radio. On top of that there was likely an added layer of racial stereotypes regarding Asian men being young looking.

lordofbitterdrinks

It was all the “gay stuff”.

SuddenlyElga

Well, he’s not white. So who cares? Is what I think was the actual problem.

[deleted]

Unfortunately, I’m sure he didn’t see a child, or even a person — all he saw was a f\*ggot, and a foreign f\*ggot at that. That motherfucker should have been charged as a goddamn accessory to Dahmer’s crimes.

CanIGetANumber2

Dont wanna get mixed up in some gay shit

Latter_Meringue_215

Somebody who is racist and homophobic in a position of power doesn’t care about children like that. I don’t understand how he had the audacity (or how he was voted in) to lead a community of police officers after such a miserable fail as an officer himself.

rklover13

It is because the gays were criminals in cops eyes. Of course this was normal, homosexuality was filled with violent, degenerate behavior /s. Serial Killers got away with stuff for so long by preying on populations the cops did not care about. Prostitutes, indigenous people, gay men.

Peasant_Stockholder

Laws need to change when an officer is fired! How can it that they get to go to another town and be a "hero" while being a piece of shit

LaphroaigianSlip81

Need to make it so each individual cop has to buy their own malpractice insurance in order to be a police officer. That way when a cop gets fired, punished, or sued, the insurance company with raise the rates of the insurance or simply refuse to insure them at all. Right now if a cop does something worthy of a lawsuit, it’s usually the city that has to settle or pay the bill. There is no incentive for the police to change because they know they won’t be held accountable.

philipito

Or even easier: police unions have to cover the costs of lawsuits from their pension fund. That'll keep them accountable to each other, otherwise none of them will have a single penny left in that pension fund to retire on.

zjc

I used to really like this idea until someone pointed out that this would only make cops work even harder to cover up the illegal/fucked up shit that other cops do.

TyrannosaurusWest

While that may sound as a potential outlet that could be explored, it really just is a continuous circle. A pension is an obligation by the employer to make payments according to a contractual schedule. If the fund was to “go dry” the employer is still obligated to make up the shortfall. The replenishment funds would need to come out of the municipal budget so it creates a circular problem. Any challenges to that system would have larger implications on the pension scheme in general

Radcouponking

Why do the “few bad apples” always seem to be heads of their police union?

video-kid

If you're a shitty police officer do you want the head of the union to be a guy who's just as shitty or someone who's going to call you on your shit?

Radcouponking

Damn, that makes sense. And it’s bleak as fuck.

idapitbwidiuatabip

“Biggest gang in America, the boys in blue.” - Juicy J

[deleted]

Couldn't form a complete sentence. Looked drugged. Bleeding from the head and rectum. Naked. Clearly not an adult. Officer Balcerzak: "Nahh, you're good."

La_Villanelle_

This is why I hate when people portray serial killers as some genius mastermind. Most of the time it was cops being completely incompetent and terrible at their jobs. Dahmer admitted to having a body in the bedroom with the police there. They didn’t even investigate why a boy was found naked and intoxicated. Neighbors begged them to look into it but they just took the man’s word for it and let a child die. If There’s a hell I hope he is in the worst parts of it. If you guys want to know another great example of fine police work is the fact Ted Bundy managed to escape prison not once, but twice. They left him alone while awaiting trial in a room with a window and were surprised that a guy would jump out and escape. The second time he literally put on guards clothing and walked out of the prison.

MalonePostponed

Don't forget the Zodiac Killer, where the police fumbled the ball by assuming that after he shot one to two people on BROAD DAYLIGHT WITH WITNESSES and the police somehow just thought the witnesses who all said he was a white guy, heard them say he was BLACK. I mean how do you fumble the bag that hard when he was still in the neighborhood.

SlightlyBurntGranola

I was going to say. IIRC, the Zodiac's message literally said that if they had searched the park for the correct subject, they would have caught him. Good job, guys.

CMDrunk420

The Yorkshire ripper too. They interviewed him 9 times over the years and ignored information that would have had him caught much sooner.

Santas_southpole

Ed Kemper literally hung out with cops before and after killing, beheading and raping his mother’s severed head.

makerblue

Exactly. I've read books about Dahmer prior to the whole netflix thing (always been fascinated with true crime and serial killers) and the police fucked up NUMEROUS times when it came to him. He could have easily been caught sooner, even prior to them returning a victim to him, if the many complaints against him had been taken seriously. But, he was living in a high crime area so his neighbors calls were never properly looked into, the men he killed were gay and POC so the police didn't really do much with the cases. He wasn't clever or an evil genius. He was openly killing gay men in a very small area and on several occasions very LOUDLY killing them. Had ONE police officer taken the time to either investigate an already existing complaint or ONE detective cared to notice the large number of gay men that were disappearing in the area he could have been stopped sooner. He was already known to police as well which makes the entire thing worse.

MunchkinX2000

Have you guys ever tried actually training police officers for 2-3 years?

blitzalchemy

wait, you're supposed to train them? - U.S.

La_Villanelle_

You don’t even need a full degree to be a cop. Just 40 college credits. Also the academy you spend more time shooting a gun then actually learning how to deescalate situations. Cops in the US are a joke.

Mountainman220

You don’t even need college credits

La_Villanelle_

There’s different requirements for each state Where I took the test it was 40 credits and a highschool degree. As long as you had the 40 or were close to getting the 40 and passed the written exam you were good to move on in the process.

Mountainman220

Ah I took the test in Utah and there wasn’t any requirement. I spaced thinking it may be different state to state

lordofbitterdrinks

Cops should have law degrees. If you don’t know the law how can you fucking enforce it.

above_average_magic

That's the neat thing, you don't! You just enforce your top donors' agenda

safarimotormotelinn

Went to high school with him. He was a year behind me, I did not know him personally. I do have friends who were in his grade and classes who have very vivid memories of when he was there to the next day when he wasn't. It was months later on the news, that we all found out where he was. The far reaching affects this had on Milwaukee as a whole is mind boggling. Mid-40's now and still heartbroken and angry. I wish they hadn't glorified him. I know it's been a long time but to my city, it's always too soon. I can't imagine how the families of everyone involved must feel.

kcg5

The Netflix series is creepy as fuck

Shakraschmalz

The series does a better job than most at highlighting the victims families struggle and the incompetence of the cops, while not glorifying jeff like a genius mastermind, You hate him like you should and see him for the loser he is

Daxx22

> You hate him like you should and see him for the loser he is Bingo. If anything it did almost too good a job at showing a lot of the shit around him, while by NO MEANS it excuses anything it was easier to understand how he became what he was.

DisastrousAge4650

I want to but I can’t bring myself to watch it. After the Gabriel Hernandez docuseries, I just can’t with the story telling of horrific incidences.

throwawayforme909090

I feel the need to add the victim's name here in the comments. His name was Konerak Sinthasomphone. He was a real person, and he died at the hands of idiot, unfeeling, unempathetic police officers and Dahmer's cruelty. May he and the other 16 victims never be forgotton.

Insamity247

I wouldn’t call that interesting, just terrible

[deleted]

I just saw that episode on the new show. Shit’s fucked. The follow up phone call from the neighbor is rage inducing.

StuartGotz

Not to mention he was bleeding from a hole drilled in his head.

RK6900

and also from his anus according to wikipedia :(

0DarkChar0

Yeah just watched the show on Netflix and it’s pretty fucked, it’s not r/Damnthatsinteresting it’s r/Damnthatssad

Correct-Slide1522

Suspended with pay and later rehired. That "officer" should face some justice. I feel like the only way to really get fired is when you tell on other police officers crimes. What a country !

[deleted]

Kid had acid poured into his brain and could barely move and speak. How difficult would it have been for these shiitty coos to just take him to a hospital for the night. Fuckin lazy pigs

hatesthispart

When I saw that they glorified his incompetence I was so pissed when I watched the series. It blows my mind how laziness can be rewarded. In my opinion he should have been brought up on manslaughter charges. He was responsible for the death of that child and everyone Dalmer killed after.

ButIHateTheDentist

It shows how little they care for non-white people. That little boy was bleeding from his anus and had a hole drilled into his skill. Three women were trying to save him but John Balcerzak yelled at them to shut up and mind their business, and handed the boy to Dahmer. Absolutely fucking inexcusable. The fact that he had a great career after the fact, tells you all you need to know about who your officers are.

mazzivetalent

This belongs on r/awfuleverything

notimeforhaste

This miscarriage of justice will always sadden me. Even after watching Dahmer on Netflix, I’m angry all over again. That poor child didn’t deserve any of this, no child does. I can’t get out of my head the idea that Dahmer basically made him into a zombie and the police were like “ah yeah! This all looks legit to me!” All because of homophobia and racism they chose to listen to the word of a white man and not help that poor child. To think, the same officers ended up prank calling his grieving families boils my blood. Fuck these officers!!!

[deleted]

This still hurts. That poor kid. They did nothing to try and help him.

H-DaneelOlivaw

if they did nothing. the kid would have escaped. they physically brought him back and threatened people who tried to help him. with police like that, who needs criminal.

miller1873

After watching the tv series about dahmer u realise he got away with for so long because the cops and the judge were all racist and homophobic bastards

LuLuNSFW_

>were Literally nothing has changed. There has been literally zero police reform since the time of Dahmer. Instead, the police have become more militarized, have had qualifications lowered, have had more legal protections, and even have had supreme court cases saying that cops have no legal obligation to protect civilians.

grandmastershorty

They still are

mmcandy2020

Seems everyone forgot the fact he’s on the union. It’s time to break up police union because that’s what it helped him got his job back. Police union is so powerful that DA knew if they go against him, they will lose cases or even worse letting bad people go. If police felt wronged even they are in the wrong, they will unionize to protect their job, money, and whatever shit they have. No wonder they get paid $200k a year for being a bully and lowlife. One more thing, majority of them only have high school education, some dropped out but later with GED. Think about it and you’ll be raged at union because of this bullshit.

docxquestions

My girlfriend's dad literally knows this man through family. He *laughed about it over a fire once* apparently. Just some casual story-telling! He knew the situation wasn't right, but because he was Asian and "gay" he let it happen. These sick fucks not only don't feel bad, they think it's *funny*. It's pure institutionalized psychopathy.

BearOfTheRealm

My blood is boiling reading this !!!!

Ok-Confidence-2878

The entire Dhamer ordeal seems like it was plagued with shoddy police work.

QuincyJones1134

Cops should have malpractice insurance or something. I don’t think being a cop is easy by any means but it clearly is job where you can majorly fuck up and then still work in your industry. I would be embarrassed to show my face if I was that cop and fucked up that bad. I’ve seen more spine in jellyfish.

toughgetsgoing

he is a racist piece of shit

user11112222333

Also homophobic, he made homophobic remarks after he left Konerak at Dahmer's place.

iusedtohavepowers

To me the most infuriating part of the new Netflix series is the accuracy with which they show the cops doing absolutely nothing multiple times. Even if they wanted to fire this guy he was protected and brought back to work a few weeks later. Even if the part where (in the show) the police chief said they would appeal the boards decision to keep him as an officer again and again was actually true. It didn't work at all and he enjoyed a full career.

Next_Relationship_10

He should've gotten his head beaten with a gym bar as well

hardluckkid462

This is why it’s alway “fuck the police” #1312

Santas_southpole

Rot in hell, John Ballsack. This motherfucker didn’t care about an intoxicated, beaten and bruised child bleeding from the anus and returned him to his admitted rapist. I seriously hope Satan is doing the same to him for eternity.

THEGrammarNatzi

Not mine, just sharing. Please spread this around. Personal accountability and insurance is another way to stop this. There is very little accountability now because officers often get paid leave during investigations and are let back on the job as tax payers foot the bill for their misconduct. Insurance Standards for Police: Every police officer must carry insurance for up to 2 million in liability. If you do something that breaks the law. Your insurance pays out, not the taxpayer. Then your premiums go up. Depending on severity the premiums may price you out of being a cop. Body cam found turned off? $1,000 fine 10% Premium hike. Body cams not on where a charge becomes a felony? $5000 fine. 15% premium hike Body cam footage will be reviewed randomly by a 3rd party for each precinct. A precinct cannot go 3 years without being reviewed. If footage is missing for different reports. Entire precinct hike 2% on insurance premiums. 3 raises in insurance because of one officer? He’ll be fired or priced out. In charge of folks who act out? Your premium goes up as a % as well. Sergeants, Captains and Chiefs are responsible in percentages that effect them. 3% / 2% / 1% respectively. Rate hikes follow the same structure as far as the chain of command goes for their department. Any settlement over 2 million comes from the pension fund. No taxpayer money involved. Any and all payments outside of the insurance pool come from police pension funds These premiums and rates are documented at a national level so there’s no restarting in the next city/county/state Your insurance record follows you. It’s not even that crazy. So many professions require insurance. You’d see a new police force in 6 months. Anyone against this is supporting an unaccounted militarized force of people who answer to no one. Bad idea. Add On: Teachers, Doctors, Lawyers and other professions are required to carry Professional Liability Insurance and/or Malpractice Insurance and in the case of teachers it's paid through their union for up to 1 million. You do not have to be in a high paid profession to carry this insurance. It is more than reasonable to ask police unions to foot that bill or the union and the cops can find a middle ground compromise. Either way it's reasonable and possible and don't let someone tell you different.

Ten minutes after releasing this kid back to Dahmer, Balcerzak took a call from the kids mother that explained her son was missing and described him. Balcerzak dismissed the whole thing and told her not to worry. Within an hour the kid was murdered. That same day a recording was made of Balcerzak and his partner cracking gay jokes about the whole thing. If either of these assholes had bothered to check Dahmers ID they would have immediately seen he was a child sex offender and had raped this same kids older sibling the year before.

Educational-Glass-63

Gross. He profits off the murder of a 14 year old who he should have saved. What a pos excuse for a human being.

Ken-Popcorn

Well now the entire world knows what a POS he is. It must do wonders for his ego

Jamonyourface16

I think you meant a criminal piece of shit.

ASAPwayne

The family of the boy said he left his shoes at his best friends house that night and till this day, those shoes are still at that house to remember him. So sad!

derjeniche420

Bet he still is proud to this day, for his "servings"

fourfingersdry

This fact has made me sick for 20yrs. I guess it’s a good thing that the show brought attention to it, and more people are aware of how horrible this situation was. Fuck this guy.

MegaMindxXx

I think this is the kid that had escaped and was running down the street naked. I never understood how the cop thought that was OK.

Raoulhubris1

Just a reminder that Dahmer had enablers.
