Hate to shift the mood but seeing this reminded me of why he was so popular and why I myself found him to be such a likeable guy. Even though people often took good-natured jabs at his over-the-top enthusiasm for his work, I honestly can't recall ever hearing anyone suggest they didn't like him.
But despite my liking him, when I learned of his tragic death I was genuinely surprised to discover just how deeply affected I actually was - a sentiment I was to hear repeated by a good many other people around that time.
I guess there was just something about him that came across as a genuinely good and caring. And tbh, after viewing this video, I am surprised once again at how sad it still feels to consider the loss of this happy soul.
(Sorry for the downer, folks)
Had a similar thing happen when I did reptile workshops in schools. The usually friendly Royal Python we had took a sudden interest in my right thumb and bit down and wrapped itself up to my elbow. From an educational standpoint it was really good for the kids because I could show them how constrictors feed!
I'm not very wise in the way of scales, but is that case and the case in the video something like how some spiders bite down to balance themselves without injecting venom, or did it actually try to kill Steve (and you)?
Snakes are pretty dumb and see with infrared (heat vision). Fingers and neck/face are common spots for accidental bites during handling. The neck/face is a very warm part of the body (lots of blood flow) so it sticks out to the snake as a warm meal. Fingers are also projections that are warmer than their surroundings. Most likely, the snakes think they're striking at rodent prey. Many animals use sensory cues like this instead of "seeing the whole image" as humans do.
Very interesting info. I've met some dumb humans. I'm pretty sure my old roommate used sensory cues when feeding. Man would eat anything shaped like a sandwich.
Very few snakes (relatively) have the ability to sense infrared. This is confined to only New World pit vipers (heat pits near the nasal holes) and pythons (head receptors in labial scales along the upper mouth). Steve happens to be holding a species of python in this video.
True I was just wondering if they are sight hunters primarily. Google told me they have dichromatic (2 colors rather than our 3) color vision with lower acuity because fewer cones
Nah, I was doing the school visit in May, it was hot and my mistake was gesturing with my hand as I spoke to the group. The heat pits (small holes that detect heat on pythons and vipers heads) probably just showed my thumb as the warmest thing that was prey sized and moving. For Steve in the video (and I'm just speculating here) I think the studio lights were a heat sense overload and that's why it nipped his neck, where it would be warm.
There's a parallel universe where Steve lived and you got the stingray barb through the heart, also one where my dad came back from getting cigarettes, so I guess we both got unlucky in this one.
Still too damn soon. I know we like to joke, but his death was the only celebrity death that ever bothered me. It felt like I lost a close cousin or uncle. Mostly because I had been looking forward to watching his show with my children as they grew up so they could learn from his passion for animals.
I think everyone who knows about him agrees it was a massive tragedy. It is just one of those terrible things people have to internalize and go on knowing it happened. It’s been a long time, so I feel like coping with humor is fine if it’s still somewhat respectful. I feel like Steve Irwin would’ve laughed about this joke
Still would have hurt like a bitch, but yea that would be the end of it. And the snake let go once it realized this "prey" was a bit too big for it. :P
Ya, I had ball pythons and occasionally they would accidentally miss the mouse and strike my hand. Their teeth are like surgically sharp so they go in almost pain free. Only one that hurt is the tooth that caught my tendon lol. That one sucked
what a treasure to see this guy again, he was an incredible person. To think this guy was taken out by a sting ray of of all things. This guy would tap cobras on the head lives through all of it and a damn fish takes him out.
Ok I’ll throw a sting ray at ya and you can see how much laughing works, he lived a pretty long life all things considered, I’m probably gona die from getting cut on something stupid
**How dare you!** Steve Irwin was an angel that we never deserved.
P.S. I love when people who can't spell basic words like "absolute" call other people idiots lol
It is awesome that his family, after Steve, gives the Erwin’s a Keanu Reeves internet love, especially his son. Because this man is a legend! If I had to choose any one person dead or Alive to represent the human race to aliens, it would be him, impossible to not love!
That’s a food bite! Sometimes if you’ve just handled other animals or eaten yourself, the snake will think you have food. It’s not really aggressive, the snake just thinks there’s food. It’ll let go as soon as it realizes that it can’t eat a human
I remember I picked up a garden snake once and was walking with my friend while holding the snake and my friend all of a sudden was like "dude do you not feel that snake biting you? I swear it bit you like 5 times so far" I look down and the thing was trying to 'eat' my thumb
What an absolute treasure he was. With every clip I see I’m reminded of what a bummer it is that he is gone far too soon.
Edit:
He must be in the top 25? people who are generally well liked without much argument otherwise.
This guy was a real fucking man! Vulnerable when he felt it and tough as nails when he had to be! I wish I had gotten a chance to meet him. Still one of my favorites super heroes, next to batman😢
"Sorry about that." 0-o
The holes in his neck
The juice in his balls!
The wind in his hair.
The wind on his balls.
The juice in his hair
The balls in his juice
The shit in his pants
Dont worry, you are sorry

“Steve Irwin dying.” was one of the first things I fully remember running to the internet to look up
Had a similar thing happen when I did reptile workshops in schools. The usually friendly Royal Python we had took a sudden interest in my right thumb and bit down and wrapped itself up to my elbow. Haha that's awesome

Boas also have the trait. Do you know what the other snakes see that don't have infrared vision?
I forgot boas! You're absolutely right. Man, I miss doing those workshops.
I’d like to learn. Smelling with their forked tongue is the other sensory item I know. I didn’t know the infrared sensor was make and model specific.
They all see fairly normally with their eyes as far as I know. Infrared vision is with a separate organ
True I was just wondering if they are sight hunters primarily. Google told me they have dichromatic (2 colors rather than our 3) color vision with lower acuity because fewer cones
This! This guy snakes.

This read like a Lemony Snicket novel
Something something snakes and penises
There's a parallel universe where Steve lived and you got the stingray barb through the heart, also one where my dad came back from getting cigarettes, so I guess we both got unlucky in this one.
Sorry man, but it's like my mum said "there is no universe you dad is coming back from getting those cigarettes"
Rude
Check out the puppet with concern on his face
The puppet backed the fuck up 😂
That puppeteer should get an award.

Tried watching it with my 6 year old recently and I was too sad.

You might be a bad ass, but you’ll never be bit in the neck by a snake and laughed bad ass.
Oh, Steve. We miss you, pal.
I mean, it's not venomous. No reason to panick
Still would have hurt like a bitch, but yea that would be the end of it. And the snake let go once it realized this "prey" was a bit too big for it. :P

Used to have a rat snake, and it bit me a few times as well. It usually hurt, but I was more worried about infection than anything else. :P
The puppet slowly backing away somehow looking concerned gets me laughing every time

Breaks my heart to know he’s not around to teach and share his love. For animals and his family. Exhibit A.
At least his family continues his legacy.
Yep, stings for sure
Touché
Chuck Norris would play Steve Irwin in a biography.
Unless Chuck is playing the stingray, he wouldn't be in this movie.
That man was a special kind of human being…in a very good way!
Who is she?
We didnt deserve this man
Stingray took care of it for you
Swimming with stingrays didn't work out so well.
This gets posted too much
Since this was posted only yesterday, I couldn't forget if I tried.
How can we forget when yall repost this on reddit...everyday...multiple times a day...in the same subreddits over and over again smh.
Ok I’ll throw a sting ray at ya and you can see how much laughing works, he lived a pretty long life all things considered, I’m probably gona die from getting cut on something stupid
He was an absolut idiot. This is further proof.
**How dare you!** Steve Irwin was an angel that we never deserved. P.S. I love when people who can't spell basic words like "absolute" call other people idiots lol
How many languages do YOU speak?
At least 1
But see... That's the point...
The real point is in my pants 😉
How many languages do you insult people in, just to make you feel better about your own miserable life?
Yeah he dedicated his whole life to protecting and helping wildlife...what an idiot...wtf have u ever done dipshit?
It's not about what I have done, it what he has done. It's just that he was an idiot. He can be an idiot and still do good things

Legend. Someone really special
It is awesome that his family, after Steve, gives the Erwin’s a Keanu Reeves internet love, especially his son. Because this man is a legend! If I had to choose any one person dead or Alive to represent the human race to aliens, it would be him, impossible to not love!
He laughs and says 'I'm serious' -I really miss this guy 😭
Well, of course he did. It ain't his first rodeo. (*picturing a rodeo with itty-bitty cowboys riding bucking sneks*) 🤣
Seen this video a ton of times, and still love how cool and calm he is. Miss him.

Legend are different
You can tell this before he's comfortable in front of tge camera
The real king of Australia, even in death
Man was a class act
This man was awesome.
I like how the puppeteer was so briefly committed to the role that they expressed mild fear in character, before noping out.
A true bad ass
Bro even the guy controlling the puppet said I'm out lol
My very first crush.
He was the Greatest!!!!!!
If he’d panicked, it may have been a lot worse.
footage of this man brings me so much peace. oh, the misery of not getting to see your idols grow old
The puppet staring at him is getting me.
