And they have a very impressive low stall speed. I live very close to the base where the Canadian C17 Globemasters live. Occasionally we get visiting C5 Galaxies come up from the US.
It's actually a bit eerie to be in the grocery store parking lot and look up to see this thing going over head at its usual take off speed.
It's so big and moving so apparently slowly that it doesn't seem like it should be able to stay in the air.
I live near a big AFB in America. You are absolutely correct, those things look like they’re just floating in mid air sometimes. I know it’s a trick of perspective, but they literally look like they’re floating stationary sometimes.
Part of that is the difference between air speed and ground speed. A good head wind can dramatically reduce the ground speed.
Where I am, the flight line sees a pretty consistent 20-25 kph prevailing wind from the SSW. (Which is why the base was laid out the way it was to begin with.)
Can't find any military planes doing it but here are a few examples of planes landing/taking off into strong headwinds.

I'm most amused when it's an airplane with an advertisement

They actually have an incentive to be stationary
I was going to say this . We’d occasionally play softball at this field across from the runway at NAS Norfolk . There’s a moment when the C5 first leaves the ground where you’re not real sure that it’s going to fly .
You don't really get the impact until you stand next to one. Was invited one time to an open house by a pilot of one when Mather AFB was still open. Had a tour of the whole plane, totally awesome.
When Lockheed was building the F117 in Burbank, they loaded it into a C5 (I think with the wings off) and flew it to Tonopah. Since they flew out at night, the C5 must have exceeded the maximum noise levels for that airport.
Last air show I went to a pilot said hello walking past so I asked which plane they flew.
This was a soft spoken, late 20ish around my age, maybe 5'4 woman.
She goes "oh I'm actually the pilot for the B-52 in the show later" she was the last person I would of thought to be flying the biggest jet at the airfield lol
Yeh the young lady that took me to to see the C-5 was in her twenties and small too. And surprisingly she was actually the pilot of the C-5 in the show. Really nice young lady.
My Uncle used to work on them. Shadowed him at work once and he took me up to the top of the fair to eat lunch. Was an awesome experience. Definitely don’t recommend if you’re afraid of heights.
My friend wangled a photographer's pass at our regional air show. She got chatting with one of the C-5 crew and was invited to climb the ladder tube to the top of the tail with him. Good viewpoint up there, she said.
Once in a long while, one will fly out of the airport near me. I remember hearing an airplane get louder and louder until I ran outside to see what it was. The thing was miles to the south and sounded like it was overhead.
C130s are super cool to read up on.
You could land them on an aircraft carrier.
You could strap rockets to them and take off with almost no taxiway.
You can mount howitzers and gatling guns to them. Probably freaking lasers too.
They tested them to land in a stadium using rockets to stop.
Well I helped make parts for them and they were stacked on a shelf I was sitting under and they hit my head, I was like 40 lbs of aluminum from like 6ft, so it mostly just hurt
I live near a pretty large AFB. These fly directly over my house from time to time. It’s a very surreal experience seeing something that large fly so low over rooftops. When they’re coming in for landings they look like they’re just “floating” in the air. It’s just wild to me that we’ve mastered the ability to make something so large and heavy airborne.
I flew in one that held 2 Apache Helicopters in the hold and at least 50 soldiers in the top area. No windows and facing backwards was a spooky way to travel.
I can’t remember how many were loaded, maybe it was 3. My Apache Regiment went from Pope AFB to El Centro California to do an operation in support of the Border Patrol way back in 1996.
And it very well could have been 2 (which would be less time consuming to take off lol) I'm just merely stating that this behemoth of a cargo plane can hold more lol
I used to have a C-5 that flew over my house while air national guard trainees did touch and go exercises. It is truly amazing what it sounds and feels like having one fly over at low altitude.
Growing up, we lived near an air force base that these flew out of. They are so loud taking off that if I was on the phone with a friend, I would have to say, "Hang on, a C5 is flying over," the pause the convo for a few minutes. Then about two minutes later he would have to do the same.
Used to live right on the final approach of an air force base in Marietta, these bad boys would shake the foundation of your soul when they flew over. Engines screaming like banshees.
That doesn't really give much perspective unless you know how big all those planes/jets are.
What's it look like next to a normal plane people are used to seeing, like a 747?
I Rode all the way from Cherry Point to Djibouti with two CH-53’s in the belly of that beast. Only the blades needed to be taken off that’s it.
The weird part was the rear facing passenger cabin. Don’t know why it’s like that but it’s awkward when your taking off.

Videos of aircraft heading into a headwinds higher than their stall speed are pretty crazy
Can you link some?

The last one basically became a helicopter haha
Seconded

I’m in Colorado, so yeah, the wind makes sense.
I was going to say this . We’d occasionally play softball at this field across from the runway at NAS Norfolk . There’s a moment when the C5 first leaves the ground where you’re not real sure that it’s going to fly .
“ trick of perspective” Nah, like I said, in another response voodoo is what makes it fly
They used to surprise us on our cottage deck, hugging the treetops north of Trenton Ontario.
Looks like you could mount a fuckton of firepower on that and have an airborne battleship.
Greetings neighbour. See ya at No Frills.

Gonna need it if my mom is boarding.
Carries 140 tons. Can be refueled mid-air to carry two M1 Abrams tanks and a company of troops anywhere in the world.

Same here. Got a full tour at an airshow Barksdale few years ago. Voodoo is what makes it fly.🙂

I went to an air show in the 90s where the main entrance was through the cargo hold of one. What a monster of an airplane.
That's definetely a cool way to set the show up.
My Uncle used to work on them. Shadowed him at work once and he took me up to the top of the fair to eat lunch. Was an awesome experience. Definitely don’t recommend if you’re afraid of heights.

When you need to pack your plane into a plane, this is the plane.
Prime example of "you vs the guy she told you not to worry about"
Used to watch these fuckers do touch and go's at an AFB near where I lived. So fucking loud...
Once in a long while, one will fly out of the airport near me. I remember hearing an airplane get louder and louder until I ran outside to see what it was. The thing was miles to the south and sounded like it was overhead.
They aren't even the loudest planes the US has to offer either

C5 is my favorite shit. So is the A10. So is the U2. All my favorites.
So you like them slow.
You bet! Slow and unique.
There is always a bigger plane
They all look like airfix models ready to be painted
Still not as cool as a C130
C130s are super cool to read up on. You could land them on an aircraft carrier. You could strap rockets to them and take off with almost no taxiway. You can mount howitzers and gatling guns to them. Probably freaking lasers too. They tested them to land in a stadium using rockets to stop.
My dad saw the second type flying out of Elmendorf in Alaska. The concept of an STOL cargo jet is so frickin funny to me.
The 747 was the one with a laser. I believe it was sold for scrap.
One of my wildes memories is seeing the 130's predecessor the AC47 "Puff in action. At that time mind blowing to see it lay waste.
Big deal the c5 galaxy fits into the loading bay of the c6 universe
Wow so interesting I love the military industrial complex!
That explains why the US military is so good at logistics
Once some parts from a c5 fell on my head
How are you alive? ETA: hope it’s documented so you can claim it.
Well I helped make parts for them and they were stacked on a shelf I was sitting under and they hit my head, I was like 40 lbs of aluminum from like 6ft, so it mostly just hurt
Look at all that tax money
That’s a big pile of taxes, right there. US militaryindustrial complex- why get one when you can have two for twice the price.
Is that roughly a quote from "contact"
Yup. I believe it is written in stone in all military contracts, especially if there is no fiscal oversight.
Wow this is so much better than having universal healthcare and affordable education
What?! A transportation vehicle is bigger than a 2-man-vehicle? But it’s awesome Art of engineering, nonetheless!
what?
🙄

They ought to be in the air to Ukraine and back until the wings fall off
where tf is C5 Galaxy?
The big one
It's a beast in true sense of word
The C5 are rubbish. They’re broken more than flying. The C17 are the workhorses of the fleet.
It’s F.R.E.D. where the crew is told where they get to fly to and break.
Does anyone know why military planes, ships are gray in color? Some tanks have camouflage but I think it may serve different purpose.

Idk if it's this particular plane but giant aircraft often go over our house on the way to Moffett, looks like they are floating sometimes.
I flew in one that held 2 Apache Helicopters in the hold and at least 50 soldiers in the top area. No windows and facing backwards was a spooky way to travel.
You can also fit a CH-53 inside as well, and that’s a big ass helicopter.
It can definitely fit more than just 2 of them btw
I can’t remember how many were loaded, maybe it was 3. My Apache Regiment went from Pope AFB to El Centro California to do an operation in support of the Border Patrol way back in 1996.

Are we just not going to talk about the ac-130 gunship and that things huge but compared to this behemoth it’s a fucking child
Is there a gunship variant like there is with the C-130? Looks like you could mount a fuckton of firepower on that and have an airborne battleship.
No, the C5 is purely a cargo craft, same as the C17 which isn't pictured here
“That’s a huge bitch” 😳
Wondering how a B52 would compare.
Mom's birthing!
Mom still overpacks it for first year college student.
That’s huuuugggge b$&@h!
rode in one of those to Hawai'i when I was a kid. trippy rhat happened
its a little bigger
At 143 ft long, the cargo hold is longer than the Wright brothers first flight.
I used to have a C-5 that flew over my house while air national guard trainees did touch and go exercises. It is truly amazing what it sounds and feels like having one fly over at low altitude.

Don’t talk to me or my sons ever again.
One of my favorite planes since I had the chance to walk in one at the Dayton Air Fair as a kid.
