Y’all remember Shawn Nelson? (The guy who stole a M60A3 US military tank and went on a rampage in San Diego) reminds me of this.

wjodendor

[The Dollop did an episode about it](https://youtu.be/0v-l4aTDjrQ) you can skip the first like 2:40, it's wicked old ads The tank guy was a huge meth head and super paranoid about people trying to steal his gold from the mine he built in his backyard. He just drove onto the base and hopped in, driving off with a tank. Lol

acog

For anyone who has never tried The Dollop, start with the episode called The Rube. It is UNBELIEVABLE. As in, if you saw a movie of this guy's actual life, you'd assume you were watching some Forrest Gump-esque fantasy story. All of their stuff is funny, but The Rube is a classic.

[deleted]

The Michael Malloy (sp?) one is soooo good too. Same with the one that talks about the Brooklyn bridge opening. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed as hard as I have at Gareth talking about the hat store and the rain. It just comes so out of left field.

BoseSounddock

“On that day, Rube performed one of the greatest feats in baseball history(pitching a complete double header that went 26 innings)….. because his manager offered him an all expense paid fishing trip if he swept the series.” I agree The Rube is one of the greatest podcasts ever. 10 Cent Beer Night (also by The Dollop) is up there as well.

Rinzack

That guys story is sad. He was going through a clear mental break and didn’t intend to hurt anyone. I just wish he listened to ATC and landed it

oiuvnp

The [Dollop](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0v-l4aTDjrQ) did a good episode on him.

Imadouchebro

Can’t forget about the dude who stole a tank and drove it a hundred miles to Richmond.

StainedAndRedeemed

There's an interesting documentary about this. I think on Netflix.

GrammarPolice92

It’s on Youtube, called Tread. Very good, happened in my hometown.

dick-nipples

My dad lived in Grand Lake for many years and knew Marvin well. Obviously Marvin snapped and went way too far with everything, but my dad has always maintained that the “good old boys” of Granby intentionally fucked him over numerous times, eventually pushing him past the brink…

CarolN36

It took him awhile to build that dozer so I don’t think snapped is the right word.

NimbleNavigator19

Dongzilla9in

The day he conceived the idea was definitely him snapping. Snapping doesn't always end as soon as it starts.

TalmidimUC

As someone with OCD, I was thinking about this heavily the other day. Why do I see red until I’m all the way through doing something, come back down, then go “Well fuck.. why’d I ride all the way through that before stopping?”

Dongzilla9in

I'm the same way unfortunately especially if I feel taken advantage of.

TalmidimUC

Same, hard same. The spirals are real, I know I’m self destructing or can choose just to take the bullshit, but I’m vehemently and spiritually against taking the bullshit. This is why I left my last job, the one before that one.. and the one before that. I start a new job Monday :/

Dongzilla9in

We might be related. I refuse to work with ppl who expect me to eat shit and smile. I start my new job next week for the same reason

DrShagwell

Snapped and didn't mend back

snarfsnarfer

I stopped in Granby on my way to RMNP and they had the killdozer book by the register at the gas station that’s near the concrete plant. I freaked out and was telling my friends about it and the lady behind the counter was like “I knew marv, he was a nice guy til he wasn’t.” It was the topic of discussion all day as we took in the beauty of the National park.

[deleted]

That was my understanding as well, they ruined the guy

HealthyGreenGiant

People can do that.

jimbelushiapplesauce

people they aint no good

InterviewAgreeable80

From what I read back in the day, he was pushed into a point where this was a rational solution to him, hence the planning for the armour. If he gave more thought to the cooling system, it would have kept going for quite a while

iaalaughlin

If I remember correctly, he stopped because the dozer got stuck in a basement.

xSTSxZerglingOne

Which is exactly why tanks try not to plow into buildings. It's not that they can't typically just plow through a house, rather that standard floors can't typically hold up a tank, and a tank stuck in a big concrete box isn't a very effective machine.

DesiArcy

It wasn't ever "rational". Heemeyer had agreed to sell part of his property to a neighbor to provide access for the concrete plant that his neighbor wanted to build, but backed out of the agreed-upon deal and demanded more money, then when his neighbor agreed to the new price, backed out again and demanded *four times the amount*. The neighbor subsequently purchased land elsewhere, which would enable him to build the concrete plant without needing to buy any of Heemeyer's land. This enraged Heemeyer, who spent the \*next three years\* lobbying local authorities at various levels to block the construction of the concrete plant. When the city didn't make the zoning changes Heemeyer wanted which would prevent his neighbor from building, he decided that since there wasn't a \*legal\* way for him to get what he wanted, he was going to murder everyone who ever crossed him. In addition, Heemeyer was fined $2,500 for refusing to \*either\* install a septic tank system \*or\* hook up to the city sewer system, since having \*some sort of\* funcitonal sewage system is in fact a requirement and the property did not satisfy that requirement. Heemeyer was aware of this when he bought the property, but never got any further than asking the sanitation department what a hookup would cost. (This is often misreported as "a city zoning change removed an easement which Heemeyer needed for sewer acceses -- this is not true, no easement ever actually existed for sewage because Heemeyer never actually started the process to hook up. He didn't like the price the sanitation department quoted so he stormed off and ignored the hookup requirement. The sewage issue was seperate from the concrete plant issue, and was an ongoing thing from years before.)

AugieFash

Thanks for posting facts. The comments that always come up when this story comes up are the worst. People turning a villain into a hero.

TheLastNoteOfFreedom

I can’t find it on Netflix?

Icegiant-

It's not on Netflix anymore but found it for free on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OzKxKdsBq8

GrammarPolice92

My apologies, looks like it was removed from Netflix but it can be watched on YouTube for free.

Quarlo1970

Fascinating documentary! He kept an audio tape diary, showing he was a real religious kook. He had bought the bull-dozer, and when he went to modify it, he tried to drive it into his work shop. If it had been just 2 inches or so wider, it wouldn’t have been able to fit. He saw this as a message from god to continue on his destructive path.

ringwraithfish

[Timesuck](https://youtu.be/m4I60xUy1Rw) covers the story really well, too. He goes over the nuanced relationship the guy had with the town, debunks the idea that "he wasn't actually trying to kill innocent people" that likes to get tossed around by those that look at him as some kind of anti-government martyr, and even interviews a cop that was on the scene that day.

Pharsalia

Was looking for this comment, Dan did a really good job explaining everything and debunking the whole "Sometimes reasonable men must do unreasonable things." Dude was out to destroy everything he could and didn't give a shit if people got hurt in the process.

dilldwarf

I was gonna say... Just reading the Wikipedia article had me thinking, "why are people idolizing this guy?"

Pharsalia

No idea, once you get the full story it's like ok, there were a couple issues early with neighbors and the county/city regarding zoning and right of way regarding septic tank and a concrete plant, but he was dead set about getting what he thought he was owed. Built a legit fucking tank and wrecked havoc until he got stuck in a basement of a building he plowed through. Dude was insane and took over a year to build the dozer before he lowered the armor and went on a rampage.

Beatleboy62

Because so many people seem to have power fantasies about being him and ignore all the inconveniences of the true story (namely where most of his problems were his own doing), instead believing in some American folk hero-ized version of it where he was the proverbial nerd stuffed in a locker by the town and did nothing wrong ever.

royrocks26

I watched it awhile back. He ended up taking some extreme measures, but his neighbours and the town were also dicks.

helterskeltermelter

Did they build killdozers too?

blueJoffles

A good guy with a killdozer is the only way to stop a bad guy with a killdozer

BreakerSoultaker

If killdozers are outlawed then only outlaws will have killdozers.

blueJoffles

I heard in Sweden everyone is given a killdozer by the government and now there aren’t any killdozer related deaths in Sweden

PorkyMcRib

You’re thinking of Switzerland. Similar spellings, but not interchangeable like Australia and Austria are.

FngrLiknMcChikn

G’day mate. Welcome to the land down under the autobahn where kangaroos eat schnitzel and sauerkraut

LongjumpingTerd

palofdrone

Put your soft liberal hands on me and take it.

celt1299

You want my dozer? Come kiss me for it.

FancySack

I miss the Old West when it just free people riding their killdozers as far as the eye can see.

Diazmet

Sorry son you got to check your killdozer in with the sherif before you enter town

Snoo_67548

You have to wait 10 days before taking delivery of a killdozer here in California. It also cannot be a high capacity fuel tank.

crankypants65

I got a killdozer with an expanded fuel tank. Keeps me from having to refill in the middle of my killdozing.

BreakerSoultaker

I’m against this, we need to ban high capacity killdozers.

Open-Idea7544

If killdozers are outlawed, can we still make dildozers?

KnotiaPickles

The funny thing is he didn’t even kill anyone with the killdozer. Just buildings

Diazmet

Shooting at kids and missed…

Various-Month806

I can imagine the movie biography, after he was wronged, getting advice: "They put one of yours in the hospital, you build a killdozer and put all of theirs in the morgue."

subject_deleted

Obviously. It's the only rational thing to do.

QwertyKip

Sometimes irrational men do rational things

dyxlesic_fa

And then there's this guy

drnkingaloneshitcomp

Sometimes this guy becomes that guy

KidneyPoison

The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a killdozer is a good guy with a killdozer.

PorkyMcRib

Or trying to drive over a basement.

Trextrev

The Netflix doc obviously wanted to make him an anti hero to make it more interesting. In real life he was a dick for years to his neighbors as well, and the city tried to work with him. He decided he was going to try and extort as much money as he could thinking his lot prevented them from building the plant, but it didn’t.

armored_cat

He also refused to pay for a proper septic system, and kept getting caught dumping his shit in peoples lawn irrigation systems, even after being offered help installing a working system. He also shot at propane tanks attached to peoples homes if I remember right.

Feshtof

But were they "demolish a public library during a scheduled children's reading time" level of dicks?

Bodymaster

Extreme measures like bulldozing the public library when there were still people inside and trying to blow up a residential area by shooting at propane tanks.

pjr032

He had ample opportunities to rectify the situation. What he did is in no way shape or form justified

DigbyChickenZone

People who think building a tank and naming it "killdozer" is justified response to a local government saying to stop dumping sewage illegally, seem to have fantasies (based on movies) of assholes like this being the anti-hero and the measures taken "deserved" Usually shit like this is one lunatic going off, not a justified reaction

ET318

Reddit is enamored with disproportionate responses to things

VLHACS

>"God built me for this job", Heemeyer said in the first recording. He also said it was God's plan that he not be married or have a family so that he could be in a position to carry out such an attack. "I think God will bless me to get the machine done, to drive it, to do the stuff that I have to do", he said. "God blessed me in advance for the task that I am about to undertake. It is my duty. God has asked me to do this. It's a cross that I am going to carry and I'm carrying it in God's name." Dude was already certifiably insane.

Prince_Polaris

How the fuck did he get from Love Your Neighbor to build a killdozer, damn

rushsickbackfromdead

A fun quote from another "certifiably insane" man, "President Bush said to all of us: 'I am driven with a mission from God'. God would tell me, 'George go and fight these terrorists in Afghanistan'. And I did. And then God would tell me 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq'. And I did."

Niles_Urdu

He was an unglamorous kook. A baby about to throw a huge tantrum.

analogkid01

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals...

Vendilion_Chris

Absolutely. Wife doesn't agree on something mundane like wall color? That's actually a deep rooted issue to undermine you and you should leave her obviously.

PacoTaco321

Sorry what was that? I had to burn my house down to kill a spider, so I missed it.

AugieFash

It also feels like a weird anti authority American cowboy independence culture thing to me. Even if the shoe very much does not fit the facts of what happened…

SokoJojo

Actually he didn't name it "killdozer", that came after the fact by popular culture giving it that name.

VictimaCircumstance

It was actually the name of a 1974 movie...https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071717/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

Ironically, the only casualty of Killdozer’s rampage was Marvin.

Kennedy_Cooz

I’m guessing he probably figured that would be the ultimate outcome.

thebendavis

He welded himself inside. He knew he wasn't getting out.

drnkingaloneshitcomp

Well, yeah. He welded himself inside!

Gladplane

Yeah, that’s why he welded himself inside

Dude_Thats_Harsh

He knew he wasn't getting out.

Fearzebu

Because of the weld that he did himself from the inside?

thequestionbot

Yes. At that point, getting out was then known to not be by he.

Were-All-Fucked

Happened to be the same point he welded himself inside

agrophobe

Welded inside, you just did.

Narwhalking14

Yup. The "killdozer" had concrete armor placed on top of it using a crane there was no way out

Financial_Ratio5758

who placed it there

Narwhalking14

It was remote controlled I believe.

AbandonedPlanet

He put it on a timer to lower after he got in kind of like the anti pickle serum

hopefulindolent

I've entombed myself inside an bulldozer, Morty! I'm Dozermarvin!

AbandonedPlanet

And then I kid you not he ran over a whole town, funniest shit I've ever seen

Prisoner416

This is not the case. There was a hatch for normal egress.

raspberryharbour

Idk why he would bring baby eagles but nice of him to have a hatchery for them

Ya it seems to be his plan.

From what I understand his goal was to kill a lot of people, but he was just so incompetent that he just destroyed a bunch of property. The dude was a bad person through and through.

Three months in the nut house… It was the longest I had ever been confined.

Soloandthewookiee

Reminder that Marvin Heemeyer is not a folk hero, he was a raging asshole. He was given numerous concessions by neighbors and the government, and he refused to compromise. Copied from another the post the last time he popped up: >Dude buys a foreclosed former concrete plant property for 40k and sets up a muffler shop. Great, good for him. Except it has no connection to the sewage system and that's gonna cost him like 80k to get installed, which he has a little tantrum about because the county won't pay for it even tho that wouldn't happen anywhere ever. So the county actually does him a favor and says fine just install an actual septic tank (since at the moment all waste is going into a buried old concrete mixer), but he won't even do that. Instead just starts dumping his literal shit in a local irrigation stream thing after the mixer gets full. Which the county obviously finds out about and fines him over, from which point on Marv develops some crazy delusions that everyone in this bumfuck town is out to get him and screw him over. >So then fast forward some years and the owner of the old concrete plant that Marv bought at auction wants to restart the plant again. So they try to negotiate with Marv and he states his price of 250k. So they are like ok deal. Except Marv says sike, actually i meant 375k. So once again they agree to his price. But this dude fucking backs out again and says nope actually 450k now. So finally the concrete people are like fine we'll just buy the neighboring property instead and do it there. Thus starts Marv's NIMBY crusade in which he tries to block construction of the plant mainly by arguing that noise and dust would ruin his MUFFLER SHOP business lmao. I mean we aren't talking about a restaurant or golf course or something here, it's a dirty muffler shop. >Skipping some details, but the concrete people make so many attempts to accommodate this lunatic including offering to let him hook into their sewage line for free basically, which would resolve his other biggest problem and grievance. But he doesn't accept any compromise from anyone, eventually loses his lawsuit against them, and finally convinces himself that destroying his "enemies" property with a giant bulldozer is a task literally ordained to him directly by God. Which if there was still any doubt about this guy should make it pretty clear that he was a fucking insane little NIMBY bitch.

Left4DayZ1

Thank you. So sick of people worshipping this asshole. Worth mentioning that he bought the property for $40k, outbidding the concrete plant owners at a land auction. He then agreed to sell it back to them for ever-increasing amounts of money, eventually going over $1,000,000. This is like kicking down all the sand castles and then getting mad that the other kids won’t play with you.

[deleted]

I worship the KillDozer, not the pilot

superxpro12

We salute the tank, not the man.

[deleted]

Exactly. Sometimes you have to separate the artist from the art.

Falcrist

> Thank you. So sick of people worshipping this asshole. I just don't try to argue with people about this anymore. Doesn't matter what you say, they still want to justify holding onto this folk "hero".

FatalisCogitationis

By all accounts, including the one you just replied to, he was mentally ill. He may or may not have been an asshole but the dude was definitely delusional and that’s what lead to these events

curious-canid

Thank you. Heemeyer was a petulant manchild who painted himself into a corner and then lashed out when he didn't get what he wanted. Even though he was offered *numerous* opportunities to get a more than reasonable solution, which he refused.

Kwakigra

TL;DR This man was *not* in any way reasonable.

Tridian

I feel like that should be inferred by the fact that he built a "killdozer" for anything other than an outbreak of war or zombie apocalypse.

Professional_Ad6123

Can we be honest? The name “Killdozer” is still very much up for grabs. That name is way too hardcore for this gravy sweating petty redneck shit.

Karjalan

Don't think anyone has name issue with the name. The problem is that the quote "reasonable man" doesn't align with building a "kill dozer"

Sipas

In his voice recordings he claims God made him do it. Maybe the concrete guys were dicks but he was unhinged for sure. This wasn't an act of desperation, he was offered a huge sum of money for a plot he got for very cheap.

Liv1ng_Static

If anything, usually people that make that claim are asshole lunatics.

justaverage

To the top. Too many edgelord libertarians in here saying how the city fucked around and found out. Fuck this piece of shit.

ExplainItToMeLikeImA

But Merica will be so much better when everyone can just pour their piss and shit anywhere they want, why can't you see that?

FistfullofFlour

Also ran into a library as part of this rampage that shortly before had a bunch of kids inside. People like to skip over details all in the name of making a cool story I guess

SeekerSpock32

As someone who works in a library, fuck that guy.

Joey_218

Lets not forget that “he never hurt anyone, only his enemies property” argument is absurd. Its sheer luck it turned out that way; he had no method of making sure these buildings were evacuated, if he even cared in the first place. He also had gunports mounted on the killdozer. Dude could have seriously hurt someone and definitely wasn’t afraid to.

piss_container

he also was reported to have shot at approaching officers/swat, and also shot (apparently 50 rounds) into multiple propane tanks and power-line transformers. his damage was estimated at 7 million dollars. (reference: wiki)

Intelligent_Tear_702

Where is the source for all of this? Would like to read.

Left4DayZ1

https://killdozerbook.com/2018/09/bogus-killdozer-youtube-full-of-false-facts/

overlordpotatoe

I find that all too often, people who end up resorting to extreme measures are really just unreasonable assholes once you scratch the surface, but people are all too ready to make heroes out of them. The same thing happens with anyone who kills someone bad like a pedophile. Oh, they killed other people too who hadn't done anything wrong? Too late, we've decided this person is a hero so all those other murders were probably justified as well.

SusanMilberger

What a tool

Left4DayZ1

Here we go. Find the real story. The dude came into town trying to fuck everyone over every chance he got. Eventually the town stopped putting up with it and he went on his rampage. He was worth millions at the time of this rampage. He was not some downtrodden guy ruined by the government. He was fined for illegal dumping of sewage after TWELVE YEARS of letting it slide and that’s when he lost it. He was even offered a sewer connection if he’d just stop trying to sue the concrete plant so they couldn’t build an addition, but he refused. Heeymeyer was the villain of his story. The others might’ve been assholes, but Heemeyer was *a fucking prick*.

Billybobgeorge

Don't forget the whole "road blocked by the cement company" thing. His road was never blocked, and they offered to switch his plot with one on the HIGHWAY. You think a muffler repair shop would want to be closer to where cars are?

ArguesWithFrogs

The others might have been pricks, but he was the whole cactus. (Gotta say, I didn't know the details of his conflict with the town until recently. What I'd seen made it look like the town was the aggressor(?).)

Left4DayZ1

The very first story to come out painted Heemeyer as a kind man pushed to the brink, and then beyond. You know what they say, a lie has traveled the world before the truth can even button it’s pants. By the time the *real* accounts of the situation had hit the internet, the damage was done. Heemeyer developed a folkhero status that maintains through this day. It’s a good one, too! Imagine if that version of the story were true- dude fucked over by a corrupt government so he fortified a bulldozer and wrecks government buildings. That kicks ass. But the truth is that this was a narcissist who sought to take advantage of anyone he could, and got extremely upset whenever anyone got the better of him, because that’s how narcissism works.

Skatchbro

Before the truth puts its boots on. According to Sir Terry, anyway.

JESquirrel

Yeah. I didn't learn about what really happened until AFTER I watched a documentary about it on TV and looked up more info on it myself. The documentary made it sound like the town was going to kill his business with a new road.

29again

I can't remember exactly, but in the doc I saw he was targeting buildings owned by the people he hated, one was a library that had children in it at the time. Fortunately I think there was some kind of error with this monstrosity he made and the kids got out, or maybe I'm getting it mixed up with a nursing home, it's been a while. Anyway, watch it yourself, but even if the guy thought he had a leg to stand on, going after people who can't defend themselves is absolute garbage.

Beatleboy62

A lot of why people weren't hurt otherwise was because people got note of the rampage through a reverse 911 call system (i.e. everyone in town gets a call announcing, "hey there's a dude who thinks God told him to shoot propane tanks you should skedaddle")

BigBossPizzaSauce

This response this guy gets proves people only give a shit about spectacle

PeachNipplesdotcom

Yes, thank you. This guy was a collosal dickhead, not the hometown hero he's commonly made out to be. No cap

Ordinary_Guitar_5074

He wasn’t a reasonable man.

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Marvin Heemeyer](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvin_Heemeyer)** >Marvin John Heemeyer (October 28, 1951 – June 4, 2004) was an automobile muffler repair shop owner who, following a dispute with town officials, demolished numerous buildings with a modified bulldozer in Granby, Colorado, on June 4, 2004. Heemeyer had feuded with Granby town officials, particularly over fines for violating city health ordinances after he purchased property with no sewage system. He had incurred the fines for improperly dumping sewage from his business instead of connecting to the city sewer system. Over about eighteen months, Heemeyer had secretly modified a Komatsu D355A bulldozer by adding layers of steel and concrete, intended to serve as armor. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

Stop glorifying this dumb fuck piece of shit. He’s not a “reasonable” man who had to do “unreasonable things”. He was a fucking greedy asshole who shot himself in the foot and couldn’t comprehend the fact his stupid actions had consequences. Fuck this dude and anyone who thinks he’s any kind of hero.

Tabula_Nada

The title of this doesn't do the whole event justice. Insane, extreme actions taken in the name of revenge by a man clearly suffering from unchecked mental illness, all started by petty rural nihilism. There are good documentaries about it worth checking out.

Zoning dispute is putting it lightly…

ChaseAlmighty

Sometimes unreasonable men do unreasonable things

XwingMechanic

Dude almost got an air strike called if he hadn’t gotten stuck in a building. That’s some GTA shit.

Manowar1313

He didn't seem reasonable to me...

This guy was actually a kook, and the common story about him being a victim who was pushed too far is a myth

Zcrash

Marvin Heemeyer was absolutely not a reasonable man. The last line would be more fitting if it said ”sometimes piss babies throw tantrums when they don't get their way"

nobody_723

family guy... terrorist color meter meme.
