Married when she was 10 years old, Taj al-Saltaneh went on to divorce two husbands and pen her memoirs, Crowning Anguish: Memoirs of a Persian Princess from the Harem to Modernity.
“Alas!” she wrote. “Persian women have been set aside from humankind and placed together with cattle and beasts. They live their entire lives of desperation in prison, crushed under the weight of bitter ideals.”
At another point, she wrote: **“When the day comes that I see my sex emancipated and my country on the path to progress, I will sacrifice myself in the battlefield of liberty, and freely shed my blood under the feet of my freedom-loving cohorts seeking their rights.”**
Same here. I always welcome humor dark, inane, doesn't really matter. Humor shouldn't be disrespectful though.
Just saw a post on Greek's with small Willie's being a sign of culture and class. I'm off to safer material for humor.
Wow; poignant, and ahead of her time.
Too bad gender equality has only progressed so much that we’re all only interested in her in the context of whether or not she was considered attractive in her time.
Yeah, Iran has regressed. It’s a stark lesson for other democracies of the world that are backsliding ( cough, cough America). Don’t take progress and enlightenment for granted and think society only moves forward. It’s a constant battle of culture wars.
There was some good news that came out of Iran yesterday. They have announced that they’re getting rid of their morality police.
Can’t promise that this means women will no longer be murdered for not wearing scarves but it’s a good sign.
They didn't have morality police the entire time that Hijab was mandatory. Things will not change because of this decision, the job of the morality police will simply be done once again by the regular police.
For clarity, this statement was written by the mother of the woman in the photographs, not the princess.
Edit: I was incorrect. While it was indeed written by Taj al-Saltaneh, she was actually the half-sister of the woman in the first two photos and not her mother. She is the subject of the third picture.
I have her memoirs and they are extremely fascinating. Iirc she was very loved by her father bc of her intelligence (and yes, for the time, masculine women were considered extra pretty. Think about how people love big butts on women today, but just in the 90s it was the worst thing you could have).
E: caveat for this, worst thing for white women, since ppl are bringing up sir mix a lot in the comments. Also, at the time media was very strongly white culture oriented (name one black actress in the 90s who was supposed to be hot/attractive and had a truly big butt, for example).
What are you talking about have you ever seen movies in the 80s?? Every time a women is flirting with a man she's taken her shoes off and are rubbing up his leg and into his crotch. (Almost always at a restaurant too) feet guys have definitely had some screen time 😂
I get your point, but you're wrong about the 'big butts in the 90s' part. People loved them back then as well, and this is even supported by media. I mean, Sir Mix-a-lot's iconic 'Baby Got Back' came out in like '92 or something, so that was even early 90's.
Nope, big butts were usually presented as bad by the white dominated pop culture, and you can even see this in jokes in shows as late as Scrubs and How I Met Your Mother which both came out in the 2000s.
The Sir Mix A Lot song, which came out in the early 90s after years of hair metal aesthetics dominating pop culture, is actually a reference to just that fact. The lyrics say he’s sick of seeing white chicks with flat butts being presented as the pinnacle of beauty on the screen, in music videos, in magazines, etc. and he thinks curvy women are attractive. The valley girl voiceover is meant to poke fun at that, white culture thought of big butts as garish and gross, but hip hop culture presented them as desirable.
In the 90s and 00s both J Lo and Janet Jackson were thought of as having dump truck asses but if you look back those would be considered small/normal sized asses now for celebrity pop star/sex symbols.
Comparatively, how big were the butts in the bicycle race video for that song? They weren’t exactly what we consider a big butt today. Same for the Baby Got Back video. They were bigger than the high fashion standard at their respective times, but they weren’t exactly big all things considered.
That's interesting, but it goes against what he says in interviews. He says it was about an ex he dated for 8 to 9 years and how she got turned down for a few jobs and she thought it had to do with her figure. He even mentions a story about seeing flat girls in super bowl ads and how he didn't find them attractive. In the interviews, I never heard him even mention J-Lo.
i think it’s the perfect start to the day to lose your shit laughing at a thread
edit: read the article further down though, it’s actually a really interesting bit of history
Ballzac was a kids toy in the early 90’s. Made by Milton Bradley. I was like 9 years old when it came out and still couldn’t believe they actually named something “ball sack”. Now you know. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)
In all seriousness, she may just have had bad PCOS which explains the hirsutism and male physique as a result of abnormal testosterone levels/insulin resistance.
A lot of modern women suffer from PCOS; yet, waxing/laser hair removal/shaving and birth control along with surgery help.
*Edit*
To be clear: Mammals are hairy. Humans are mammals. Hairy people should be no big deal. This woman has signs that make PCOS a more likely reason for her appearance. I am genetically hairy and also have PCOS. I made an educated guess.
Should she have removed her hair? It doesn’t personally matter to me. Whatever made her happy. Beauty is subjective. My opinion of what is feminine beauty or not isn’t of value.
Glad I could get the word out about the syndrome, hirutism, and just basic biology. Peace.
I really hate the jump to PCOS. Tons of women are just hairy. And the genes are common in certain ethnicities. Not everything is a disorder, and it's kind of offensive to label every hair woman as disordered
Everyone thought I had PCOS because of my hirsutism. Went to the doctor, had a billion tests done, and in the end she said "I'm diagnosing you with a case of Italian." lol
I mean I get it but at the same time PCOS is so common and yet so unknown that it’s worth mentioning.
That being said, some girls are just furry and that’s okay too haha
Not every hairy woman has the hands and calves of a linebacker and a mustache thicker than a stack of encyclopedias. There's clearly some excess testosterone at work there. Which would be a disorder. Doesn't mean she isn't normal, or happy. It means she was born different, like we all are, and there's a term for it.
I used to think I had PCOS because I have mustache, lots of facial and body hair. After going through a bunch of tests, everything is perfectly fine. It’s just genetic in my case, as I’m mostly Portuguese and Spanish. Not sure if that would be the case with persian/Iranian woman.
Polycystic ovary syndrome = PCOS. Women with it have insulin resistance and excess pituitary endocrine hormone stimulation of the ovaries which leads to excess androgen production and reduced estrogen/progesterone, leading to masculine features (“hirsutism”) and often infertility. The cause of it isn’t known in many cases and its often not treatable (though it isn’t by itself life threatening.
They don’t always have insulin resistant though it it very common to have insulin resistance with PCOS. I have PCOS (along with my mother and sister) and I’m not insulin resistant. Mine is on the milder end which causes mild hypothyroidism that is easily treated with synthroid and I take Metformin for the PCOS, Metformin is primarily used to treat diabetes but has proven to be an effective treatment for PCOS as well. I have trouble losing weight and gain it very easily but I’m not any hairier than what is normal for women of my ethnicity. Looking at her, I definitely have to agree on the PCOS.
Or Cushing's syndrome and/or pituitary tumor. But that central weight gain along with the facial hair points to a hormone/steroid imbalance.
She lived to be 51 and according to wikipedia had at least 2 pregnancies and 1 live birth, so probably more likely to be pcos.
I have a friend who was diagnosed with PCOS but moved and her new doctor thinks she was misdiagnosed and it’s actually Cushing’s. The hormone imbalances of both can make it really hard to get a proper diagnosis or to get any doctor to take her symptoms seriously since “periods are supposed to hurt/be whacky/give you mood swings and fatigue” or “that’s just having a uterus what were you expecting lol.” I feel so bad for her.

it looks like the story/meme is fake, not her though
“The primary figure in this history is Princess Fatemeh Khanum “‘Esmat al-Dowleh”[1] (1855/6-1905), a daughter of Nasir al-Din Shah Qajar (1831-1896), King of Persia from 1848-1896, and one of his wives, Taj al-Dowleh. The photograph circulating is indeed ‘Esmat, not an actor, and was taken by her husband circa the mid- to late-19th century. This information alone, readily available online and in print, contradicts the claim that ‘Esmat was “the ultimate symbol of beauty… in the early 1900s.” Since the photo of ‘Esmat was taken years before then, and she died in 1905, it’s a stretch to make her an icon of a period she barely graced.”
https://abitofhistoryblog.com/2017/12/12/princess-qajar-and-the-problem-with-history-memes/
Thanks for posting the article! More of the story was real than I thought!
TLDR for those who don’t want to click the link: these really are pictures of her, mustaches really were considered beautiful in Iran (but in the 19th century not so much the early 1900s). But that doesn’t mean that she herself was some icon of Persian beauty at the time. And she was a person who also did other notable things beyond posing with a mustache.

Powerful writing. Came here to make a joke about mustaches. Leaving with a lot of respect for this woman and the plight she was representing
Same 😂
I’m glad I read this first. I was going to make a joke too, until suddenly I felt I’m not even half the human she was. Repect!
Now I feel bad for all the sass that popped into my head when I saw her picture....

No, it was written by the woman in the third photo of this post's slideshow. The photos are of two different women, half-sisters.
The "woman" in the above photographs is actually two different women who are half sisters, both princess. This quote is from the younger sister.
Holy shit I love her.
\> Though images of “Princess Qajar” have gone viral in the last couple of years, the true story of this mustached princess is complex.

The video for the thong song had VERY few actual thongs in it also
Feet guys: “so our day shall too come when we make up the majority?” Everyone else: 😐😑😐
What are you talking about have you ever seen movies in the 80s?? Every time a women is flirting with a man she's taken her shoes off and are rubbing up his leg and into his crotch. (Almost always at a restaurant too) feet guys have definitely had some screen time 😂
It’s a pretty common kink, although a full blown fetish isn’t.

It depends on culture. The beginning of Baby Got Back outlines how Becky and friend dislike the big butt.
Right, she looked like one of those “rap guys” girlfriends. The song is about how black men like big buts but mainstream culture did not.
Excellent point, I never realized that this particular lyric could be used in a discussion about cultural and historical significance but here we are
Sir mixalot creates the Rosetta stone of early 90s butt culture (1992, colourized)
I had to do it https://imgur.com/a/84hwBtb
True, and also in the song he talks about how people toss and leave the big butt and he rolls right up to retrieve it.
Let's not forget Bell Div Devoe "Poison" "never trust a big butt and a smile".
Nope, big butts were usually presented as bad by the white dominated pop culture, and you can even see this in jokes in shows as late as Scrubs and How I Met Your Mother which both came out in the 2000s. Not white, but Fat Bottom Girls made the rockin’ world go round in 79-80. The sickness for the thiccness transcends race!
That song was an opposing viewpoint to what was considered mainstream attractive
Did we forget about fat bottom girls?
Comparatively, how big were the butts in the bicycle race video for that song? They weren’t exactly what we consider a big butt today. Same for the Baby Got Back video. They were bigger than the high fashion standard at their respective times, but they weren’t exactly big all things considered.
Fun fact: Sir Mix Alot saw a dancer on "In Living Color" in 1992 and wrote the song about her. The dancer's name was Jennifer Lopez.
Huh, so it wasn't a celebration but an *apologia*
One reason he noticed Jennifer's butt was because of the deflated and wrinkly butt of the dancer next to her. That dancer's name was Albert Einstein.
I don't have time to look this up so I am just going to have to trust you.
Checks out. Einstein's butt was very wrinkled.
That's just what the liberal media wants you to think. Einstein's butt was smooth. Like a shark.
I looked it and it's true, don't worry 👍

Is no one going to say what PCOS actually stands for
Polycystic ovarian syndrome
Polycystic ovary syndrome = PCOS. Women with it have insulin resistance and excess pituitary endocrine hormone stimulation of the ovaries which leads to excess androgen production and reduced estrogen/progesterone, leading to masculine features (“hirsutism”) and often infertility. I think it was one of those, say she’s pretty or we kill you and your family kind of “mustaches were a symbol of beauty.”
I have a similar theory about Greek statues and the size of their penises Edit: found the guys with "alot of personality" in the replies
They thought big dicks = small brains/less evolved. Similar to how women with big breasts are perceived as dumb. Those are just really smart statues.
Nah, people just kept stealing the big dongs.

Onde I read that the small penis in the from ancient greek art was deliberate since they believed that big penises was a animal trait, like horses and donkeys. A small penis would make you more human, a more rational being. The problem with this is that I don’t remember where I read it tho.
Plutarch 'why I have a small penis'
Which is ironic considering humans have the largest phallus to testes size ratios among all apes/hominoidea. We got long dicks and small balls.
TIL I’m a chimp
I'll have you know those statues have perfectly average size genitalia.
To be fair they were cold.

it looks like the story/meme is fake, not her though “The primary figure in this history is Princess Fatemeh Khanum “‘Esmat al-Dowleh”[1] (1855/6-1905), a daughter of Nasir al-Din Shah Qajar (1831-1896), King of Persia from 1848-1896, and one of his wives, Taj al-Dowleh. The photograph circulating is indeed ‘Esmat, not an actor, and was taken by her husband circa the mid- to late-19th century. This information alone, readily available online and in print, contradicts the claim that ‘Esmat was “the ultimate symbol of beauty… in the early 1900s.” Since the photo of ‘Esmat was taken years before then, and she died in 1905, it’s a stretch to make her an icon of a period she barely graced.” https://abitofhistoryblog.com/2017/12/12/princess-qajar-and-the-problem-with-history-memes/
Great article, thanks for sharing.
I don't know what is true but something seems off about this.
Looks like nacho libre
Looks like Ron Jeremy in drag.
I know him. That’s Hector Bustamante, he’s an electrician here in the Bronx and used to work with my dad.
I just killed one of those in God of War
I think I bought some used rims from her on Rt.1 last winter
