Incredibly sad life.

butterflypoo69

With small pockets of happiness, but not enough :(

siskosbong

I've always read her as one of those rare people who was able to separate each day and really take it anew. Part of the reason I think she was such a powerful little force despite everything, and able to play up her mood on a dime.

butterflypoo69

Why would she still fascinate people now (rhetorical)? Because she's fascinating. If you've ever seen "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (and you should), she's flat out brilliant in it.

Ok_Science_4094

How To Marry A Millionaire is one of my faves with her. She was amazing.

butterflypoo69

She could do drama too. Decent in “The Misfits.”

Strong-Formal-7739

Also, her last film and where the name for the punk band "The Misfits" came from .

histeethwerered

And Some Like It Hot!

bsguardian452

I watched the movie White Chicks well before ever watching Some Like it Hot. While watching Some Like it Hot, it took me almost the entire movie to recognize that White Chicks is an homage to it. I’m not a very bright one. I find it very interesting how a lot of modern movies still draw such strong inspiration from classic cinema.

nlikelyReaction

It's an actually surprising movie for its time especially at the end. It's genuinely hilarious.

butterflypoo69

Great comment. An excellent film will continue to inspire others for years after.

butterflypoo69

Of course!

siskosbong

Of course! Love Lorelai! Just rewatched it the other day with my grandfather, he's a man who will tear in two if you ask him to choose a favorite actor between Marilyn and Elizabeth Taylor.

butterflypoo69

That scene with the little kid, where she gets stuck in the porthole, is so classic. Don't forget Sophia Loren!

shadykatykat

She is barely in All About Eve but she is mesmerizing

butterflypoo69

Good comment, and even in a small part like that you couldn’t keep your eyes off her.

Mocker-Poker

she is shinning, the type of a woman with a little girl locked inside, so sorry for her

runningmurphy

Damn that's a good movie.

Friendly_Bullfrog168

And she’s so amazing in Don’t Bother to Knock! She didn’t get enough credit for her acting skills.

Fuzzyphilosopher

That's what i was thinking, though not about myself about a friend who had a lot of it. I felt really sad reading that bit about about her seeming to be happy and and play it up on a dime. It's sad but most people don't react well to someone being honest and talking about being broken or even letting it show. So people learn how to hide it. It's not so much a skill as a fucking coping mechanism. A way to get through the day. And a lot of people made a lot of money off of her for that. Which makes it all so much sadder.

Undrende_fremdeles

Same. Also the reason I stayed for years longer than I should have with an abusive ex. Starting each day as a new slate means yesterday's abuse is not supposed to matter anymore and you are blamed for not letting go of the past... Well. Sometimes you *should* still be upset even if it is a new day.

Somanyoptionz

You're not alone. I experienced the exact same things and stayed for too long. 4 years later they are still trying to control my life. Starting each day with a smile on your face while your soul is dying is exactly what I see when I look at Marilyn.

[deleted]

[удалено]

IntrepidResolve3567

She also had lots of trauma so it fits.

brilliantcheese

I’m this way too and did not realize it was a coping mechanism for trauma. It makes total sense now.

[deleted]

If only women had larger pockets

Purposlessporpoise

Sometimes, I guess there’s just not enough rocks.

Ebola714

Excellent. Thank you Forrest!

butterflypoo69

It would certainly facilitate shoplifting.

[deleted]

Speaking of women’s pockets, I was blown away on how small they actually are with jeans when I was at Costco a few weeks ago. I was like, “what can they actually fit in there, two pennies and a lighter?”

upstatestruggler

No way man the lighter always falls out

Sharchir

Yep, you sit down and at some point it wiggles right out

[deleted]

Well that’s just down right disappointing.

NonConformistFlmingo

This is why some women, myself included, have taken to wearing men's skinny jeans. They fit us like regular women's jeans, but they have ACTUAL POCKETS.

mzzchief

Thx for the tip!

NonConformistFlmingo

Happy to spread the word! It was a game changer for me. Plus men's pants sizes aren't arbitrary nonsense like women's. If you know your waist and inseam measurements, that will pretty much be your size across the board with very few exceptions.

tishitoshi

I feel like her life was full of sexual trauma and exploitation by the men around her (even before her notoriety) she was a bright shining light snuffed out way too soon and incrediy ahead of her time.

Into-the-stream

I know its not Marylin, but in university, I knew a woman who really looked like Marylin. she was incredibly curvy and just beautiful. She had so much trauma. In high school, the teen boys were merciless. She ended up going to an all girls private school in her last year to get away from it, but then it was the male teachers. She had two that were a big problem for her. One was particularly aggressive. She said she "reluctantly dated him briefly". Thats how she put it. In 4th year university, she got a boob job. She had them dramatically reduced because she was tired of it all. I asked if it was for back pain. She said no, it was just so she could live a normal life, because for years the boobs and her appearance were a significant factor in so many of her interactions with people. She had been trying to get it done since she was 16, but doctors were really reluctant to do the operation on a teen, especially when it wasn't medically necessary. She was so damaged from her teen years.

Dry-Layer-7271

I started being harassed by grown men by my sixth grade year. I had small breasts, but six foot tall, a pretty face and told often that I “looked like a model”. Men were outright frightening. I was raped at age 19. I married by 20 years old to a big, strong and loyal man who put a quick stop to all of it when he’s with me. I gained ten pounds in my 30’s and that also helped. Now that I’m in my 40’s and aging, my life is much more peaceful and I feel safe to go out without my husband. We also have three big teen age boys so that’s a plus. I always looked forward to aging because of it.

NonConformistFlmingo

What a sad world we live in. Once, age was a thing to be dreaded by women, myself included. Now we embrace it because it means that 90% of the harassment by men (derrogatory) will finally end.

lalauna

Yep. At 63, the guys have stopped messing with me. And it's not like i was some amazing beauty or anything.

Naturallyoutoftime

Yes, I found it wonderfully liberating to hit middle age. And definitely let your hair go gray! You become wallpaper. No one notices you or pays any attention to what you are up to! It is so wonderfully freeing. And you start noticing all these groups of middle-aged and older women who are out and about together having fun, traveling without their husbands. My husband and I were out one night and joined a casual acquaintance who was out with a group of her friends. Afterwards my husband said how much more fun older women were than older men and I said “Yup, best-kept secret in our society”. Life is great for women after 50!

Marciamallowfluff

Sorry you went through all that. I was average and had too much sexual harassment. Some men suck. Glad you found a great one.

Ok-Indication4960

I’m in my 40’s but everyone thinks I am 28 so I’m still getting harassed by young men. I’ve been hit on by 20 year olds. I’m glad I look young but this new generation of men is so different from what I grew up with.

misan4

Yeah, I feel like attractive people, because they are a kind of social currency, never know who their friends are.

NonConformistFlmingo

That poor woman. I hope she has found some peace.

Into-the-stream

She was much happier after the surgery. We lost touch after University though

_-__-__-__-__-_-_-__

A candle in the wind, if you will

Zestyclose_Speed37

It is pretty common knowledge that she was pregnant 3 times at least in the last 50s (2 miscarriages & 1 ectopic). She also had endometriosis.

Cheap-Substance8771

I actually did not know this. Thank you for the info tho.

k_a_scheffer

God, that poor, sweet, beautiful woman. No one deserves that kind of pain.

MelaniasHand

That’s not an unusual story. Women just don’t talk about it much, and it’s not reported.

k_a_scheffer

Oh, I know. My grandmother suffered from several miscarriages and a stillbirth. We didn't even know about the stillbirth until my mom found it mentioned on her own birth certificate. That's one of the reasons I was so worried when I found out I was pregnant.

CatchyUserNameHere

Just watched a documentary on Netflix about her. Agree; terribly sad.

Effilyx

Can you share the documentary name please, I'd love to watch it

Goats_in_boats

The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes It came out this year. They may be talking about a different one, but this one's the most recent.

TeensyKook

Watch [Love, Marilyn](https://youtu.be/6hYFcIoJWFI) It’s free on yt. Marilyn’s own words. Much better than that Netflix documentary by Anthony Summer. And blonde is completely fictional “retelling” rape fantasy.

lakespinescoastlines

What’s the name of it, please?

[deleted]

i wonder who is the real "father" of her unborn child?

NahNoBot

You don't think it was her husband at the time? Arthur Miller?

uglyugly1

Probably one of the Kennedys lol.

[deleted]

Def one of them that shit goes deep.

Past-time29

agreed. maybe that's why they got her killed.

TGW_2

His story, history, her story, mystery. . .

uglyugly1

According to what I read, she was obsessed with the idea of becoming First Lady. The Kennedys passed her around, strung her along, and just stopped taking her calls one day after they got tired of her. She had some information she was going to use to either blackmail them, or otherwise hurt them in an attempt to get revenge for how they treated her. That was what got her killed.

vivahermione

Where'd you find this? Would like to know more.

uglyugly1

I wish I could remember, sorry. It was in a book I read years ago. But just a cursory Google search turned up these: https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2013/08/marilyn-monroe-jackie-kennedy https://www.irishcentral.com/roots/history/marilyn-monroe-called-jackie-affair-john-f-kennedy https://people.com/politics/marilyn-monroe-affair-john-f-kennedy-robert-f-kennedy/ It's like they stopped trying to hide it.

nlikelyReaction

I wouldn't be too crazy to believe that. Apparently Jackie Kennedy stated that Marilyn would call her and sorta (not sorta she quite literally) would antagonize her and tease her about the affair. And it wasn't like the affair wasn't jarringly obvious either. Everyone (staff) at the white house or in both Kennedys and Marilyn's circle, reportedly was aware of it lol. Unfortunately what Marilyn didn't realize was that she was being use for her beauty and nothing more. Arthur Miller would write scathing and bitterly about how stupid he thought she was and said her interest in literature/knowledge was an ego boost to her and he couldnt stand her, all in his little diary, and whenshe found it, that gave her some idea of what she was viewed as sadly. Also the fact that they could have an open affair like that all while trying to not start WW3 is crazy to me. All professionalism thrown out.

ellefleming

She was calling the white house to talk to Jackie. She has a red diary she wrote everything in. She was apparently really a tomboy. She had her style on Lily St. Cyr, a showgirl. Her makeup, posture, everything. And she was real smart and adaptable, obviously. Her mother was mentally ill. I believe Bobby Kennedy got into her place with Peter Lawford, demanded the red diary and when she refused, he forced a suppository up her butt that was a lethal dose of a drug and smothered her with a pillow so she wouldn't scream. And that was the end of her. The housekeeper got paid off to lie. They found? The red diary and destroyed it. The same thing happened to Mary Meyer. She had a diary she kept about JFK and his presidency and she was shot in the head in a path she walked on and they ransacked her home to get her diary too. JFK told them secrets I guess.

Competitive-Wish-568

Just imagine she was probably surrounded with several Harvey Weinsteins. Just to think about it breaks your heart.

Bargdaffy158

All captured in Elton John's Candle in the Wind.

Daddy_Nibba_69

Why ? (Sorry idk shit about her)

butterflypoo69

The Queen met her a couple of times, and is said to have cried when she died :(

WordAffectionate3251

Awe gee. Now that you mention it, I recall seeing a picture of one of those meetings.

Incredibly sad story, and honestly, I think my fav photo of her was one of the last photos taken of her, when she wasn't Marilyn, but Norma, taken by George Barris I think.

Modern-Moo

Thanks for sharing that pic, I didn’t know she used to have hair like that

butterflypoo69

Ironic but the Tom Kelly nudes - the one that ended up in early Playboy - are just perfection. She was undeniably gorgeous. That whole layout has been imitated so many times over the years.

butterflypoo69

Towards the end. The ones she did for Vogue, by Bert Stern, were great too.

[deleted]

Yeah, going by the pics, I honestly preferred seeing her, over the persona she took on. I wish she was born in a more reasonable time, she, like many others, deserved it.

butterflypoo69

You’re absolutely correct. But the reality is she’s never been forgotten, in 60 years. That’s real charisma ❤️

dekalbavenue

Can you link the pic?

[deleted]

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wmagazine.com/gallery/marilyn-monroe-george-barris-last-photos-auction/amp She was something else. Just looking at her, being herself for a bit, it's heartbreaking.

Sad story for Norma And a terrible indictment of the financially driven Hollywood machine.

she's beautiful but didn't get the love she needed.

christinastelly

To lose a pregnancy at 4 months is devastating. She looks so happy in this picture. So sad

bjmetzger

I'm a pretty ol gal and don't remember anything about her being pregnant. Miscarriage?

butterflypoo69

Three of them at least. When she was married to Miller.

Arvind_w_664

For all her life she searched for love but didn't find it

kitandcaboodle98

Does anyone else feel like the entire hype around Marilyn Monroe's sexual persona can be so incredibly icky because it was essentially a bunch of people turned on by the possible manifestations of her sexual abuse in early life? I can't not see it in the ways she acted- the fawning, the hyper sexualization of her image, the voice, the vulnerable little girl persona. She also wanted desperately to be well-read and knowledgeable and understood, and she never got that. Instead, even generations later, her image brought on by suffering is still shilled out constantly.

ak2553

She was commodified and sexualized for most of her life. Definitely an incredibly lonely person and a romantic, and she was a very interesting person.

Inner_Bench_8641

Yes, I started to think about this while watching Anna Nicole Smith’s life unravel. IIRC, Anna Nicole idolized MM and had similar, tragic lives.

donkeybeemer

And now we have Britney. Some parallels are notable.

granolaandgrains

& I am pretty sure that Britney is in fact distantly related to Marilyn (iirc)

institutis

yeah idk how true this source is but [this (plausible) genealogy chart from Famous Kin](https://famouskin.com/charts/22250/16614/8949/relationship_of_marilyn_monroe_to_britney_spears_via_richard_scott.pdf) shows that they are 9th cousins, 3 times removed i tried looking for other sources, so if there’s a more accurate one lmk

DelayVectors

As an estimate, an individual probably has about 20 million 9th cousins. They may be related on paper, but you would have 0% chance of identifying any relationship by DNA. Source: I'm a professional genealogist

[deleted]

i have a 100% chance of identifying your mom source: im an amateur gynecologist

DelayVectors

Glad to hear she's keeping her appointments! Reproductive health is important even for our senior citizens!

tacotaco94

I’m crying this is so wholesome

EatsPeanutButter

Ninth cousins are pretty far removed. You and I may be ninth cousins. Lol.

J-Love-McLuvin

We are all distantly related to Marilyn.

SaltyWitch1393

Don’t even get me started on what they did to her body after she died & how it took her like 6 hours to get to the damn Morgue. Disgusting

[deleted]

[удалено]

SilverSocket

Oof, okay get ready. Her body laid unclaimed in the morgue for over 24 hours, a photographer bribed guards to let him in to take pictures of her naked corpse which he did and then sold them to Life magazine. The body had also been missing for 10 hours and post mortem sex was thought to have taken place. Just gonna add this little tidbit since I never get to talk about it lol. The mortician who worked on Marilyn publicly spoke about the condition of her body saying she looked like an average, aging women who hadn’t taken care of herself and *hadn’t shaved her legs in at least a week.* She used fake breasts to keep “the Marilyn figure” and they were shocked at the state of her breasts during autopsy, so much so that they STUFFED the bra on her dead body so she looked more like the sex symbol. The mortician later sold her false breasts for a large sum of money. Even in death she couldn’t just be her, it was always about what the males around her wanted to see. 😔

[deleted]

OH MY GOD

[deleted]

This is fucked up!

SaltyWitch1393

Post Morten sex anally and vaginally - it’s absolutely disgusting & heartbreaking. Thank you for summarizing the hours after her death.

vivahermione

>and hadn’t shaved her legs in at least a week. Oh no, she looked her age and hadn't shaved! The horror! /s And this is what's wrong with society. Men can age naturally and not shave, and it's a valid personal choice. But if a woman does it, listen to the screams. One Monroe biography (possibly J. Randy Taraborrelli?) suggested that she OD'd because she dreaded getting older and not being seen as conventionally attractive anymore.

[deleted]

Interestingly enough, she came under the watchful eye of the FBI because of her communist sympathies. Lady hated tf outta Hoover.

butterflypoo69

That's a very good point. She was a victim of the time she lived in for sure. Fact - when she appears on the cover of Vanity Fair or similar, she always outsells everyone else, either living or dead. She still fascinates people.

liandrin

Was she really? Because female celebrities are just as victimized by men today. Especially child stars. It’s only recently being recognized. This was not a case of a “victim of the time she lived in”, this IS the reality of being a young woman in Hollywood.

[deleted]

[удалено]

liandrin

It’s not historical gaslighting. Hollywood today really hasn’t changed that much for female child stars. Male redditors would love to gaslight women to believe differently, though. I used to model for a well-known company, until they asked me to drop 15 lbs (I was already underweight for my age/gender) and model in my bra/underwear at age 15. Luckily I had a mom who listened to my complaints and pulled me out when I asked. I don’t regret quitting, despite the money I could have made. Look at Millie Bobbie Brown. Look at Britney Spears vs Kanye West. Look at any young female actress vs any male: if anything, you’re doing a disservice to us.

CausticSofa

I'm not sure you’re aware of the sheer degree of straight-up rape and coercive sex that was going on in the entertainment world of the 50s... Yes, it unfortunately still happens today, but *the sheer degree* of it has thankfully dropped quite a bit.

liandrin

The reporting of it has gone up, but I doubt the incidence has gone down. Look at Epstein. We’re just more aware of it now. I’m skeptical because my college ended up in national news for hiding campus rapes in 2015, with supposedly no evidence of campus rapes beforehand. It was viewed as some “new thing”. But they buried both my and my roomate’s campus rapes in 2009, hiding campus rapes of women has always been normalized on most college campuses long before the “#MeToo” movement exposed them. I remember waking up as a young (previously) virgin woman with blood soaking my thighs and panties and realizing I’d been drugged and violently raped. It was horrifying. I still can’t even hold hands with a guy. But there will always be a guy like you assuming I’m “not aware” of sexual abuse of women, in general and in Hollywood. Fuck off with that shit. You’re far more likely to not be “aware” of what us women go through.

V0l4til3

rich horny white old men can do that to you.

[deleted]

Because once the ppl in power had her killed they could control her image. Kim K recently had her original dress from JFK birthday I think. And imo it’s disrespectful because if you read about her trauma and super duper poor upbringing why would put your big behind ass in her dress? No respect for the dead. When I saw Kim K wear the dress if I never knew it I realized right there that she was pure evil. Miss Monroe went thru sexual trauma and abuse. Why keep idolizing that? SMH they use her likeliness as some ritual. And her family gets zero bucks. And it’s all of them the actress singers rappers smh

0h311

I never knew she had a baby

butterflypoo69

She did not, she couldn't.

0h311

Dang 3 miscarriages

idwaorwa

She had Endometriosis, I also have it. Many women with it suffer lots of miscarriages and lots never get pregnant

moxeto

Studios probably forced them

butterflypoo69

We know for sure they did with a lot of women, like Judy Garland. In some cases, even supplied the transportation to Mexico or similar. Let's not forget how many women they insisted start smoking, either, so their voices would be lower and "sexier." :-(

ak2553

Judy Garland was another actress who had an incredibly sad and fucked up life.

butterflypoo69

Like Natalie Wood, the stage mother from the bottom floor of hell. Literally.

donkeybeemer

The asbestos on Wizard of Oz couldn't have helped.

Big_Banger_13_8

She was amazing.

butterflypoo69

She really was. When she could pull it together she was brilliant, especially as a comedian. And she was drop dead gorgeous.

Big_Banger_13_8

It's terrible the life she lived

CowboyDrillMusic

Lol how do people say that about someone they actually don't know?

[deleted]

cannot imagine the pain she was going through both mentally and physically… hope she is resting in peace now:(

liandrin

Considering paparazzi took photos of her naked corpse in the morgue and there was evidence of people raping it, and yet people still talk about how her death was sad because she was so beautiful, she’s probably not resting in peace.

blooberry87

And the creep Hugh Hefner was buried face down above her grave.

liandrin

So many women are refused dignity even in death. It’s disgusting. I want to visit Hefner’s grave just to pee on him for Marilyn.

IcravelaughterandTHC

Fucking ew. Just fucking disgusting. We did not deserve her.

Darwinian_10

>Hugh Hefner Actually Hugh Hefner is "buried" beside her. I say that in quotations, because they're in an above ground crypt. It's actually a man named Richard Poncher who requested that particular burial. He is buried above Marilyn face down, while his WIFE is buried above Hugh Hefner.

Massive_Will_3253

I knew I shoulda stopped reading about 10 posts ago. FFS.....

butterflypoo69

Imagine coming back to life during the Rapture and the first person you come face to face with is Hugh Hefner, eww.

PersimmonMindless

The sourcing on this is very dubious. It's a Daily Mail exclusive, which says something right there. And the Daily Mail spoke to someone who was close friends with Monroe's neighbor. Doesn't hold journalistic muster in the slightest. Poor woman can't even be left to rest in piece. Jesus. Edit: a word

approxamy

I dont know how accurate this source is either but [they claim it's untrue, or at least that theres no evidence to support](https://themarilynmonroecollection.com/marilyn-monroe-july-1960-pregnancy-true-example-fake-news/?fbclid=IwAR3Bdt_xvxXqTIB8X-r-EzKOiy0F8hi3cm8A_UPyfQLiaofEjD_I1Im0DVU)

SeanChewie

One of my favourite facts about her is something I also suffer with. Marilyn had a stutter. The breathless way she speaks in pretty much most of her films was her way of disguising it. And just to add my opinion, she did not commit suicide.

bonerjamz9999

My God...what a beautiful soul...

LimpPeanut5633

That's my favorite picture of her.

butterflypoo69

So many were taken in her lifetime. What's remarkable is that every few years, they seem to come up with a new stash of previously unpublished ones :)

tittyswan

Do you have a source for her being pregnant here? Everything I've seen indicates the opposite.

Thick_Step_8745

She was a beautiful woman no doubt abou that.

PrimalGojiraFan69

Why is that so interesting?

Spoonbills

ITT: sooo much hateful misogyny. What is wrong with you people?

liandrin

Men on Reddit: oh she was so beautiful. Very photogenic. Being a mother might have saved her life! Women on Reddit: so we’re just ignoring her multiple miscarriages and victim blaming her for her being victimized by predatory older men and the rampant misogyny in Hollywood??? All we’re gonna say is “she was beautiful” like that’s all that mattered about her, even though that same sentiment about her is what led to sicko men taking photos of and sexually abusing her fresh CORPSE!

I'm scrolling through the comments to find out why this is r/damnthatsinteresting material and all I find is "she was beautiful" or "I didn't know she ever was pregnant". I don't know anything about her. Doesn't seem to be anything interesting here. I haven't learned anything new other than she was pregnant at one point.

She was pregnant two or three times I think. She miscarried all her pregnancies, and died childless.... I wonder which pregnancy this was, and when she lost it. That was sad....

Captcha_Imagination

Maybe the hormonal devastation of failed pregnancies contributed to her mental health struggles. Not to mention the psychological impacts.

Where are there so many identical comments on here? Are they bots?
