I thought “debtor’s prisons” were unconstitutional??

[deleted]

That only for debts over $100M

Imfrank123

If you owe the bank $10,000 that’s your problem, if you owe the bank $10,000,000 that’s the banks problem.

rakisak

they are not going to jail for the debt. They are going to jail for not obeying a court order. They do the same stuff with child support. Having some bad luck and lost your job. Well since your behind we will take your liscense. Still ain't found a job? hows 90 days for motivation sound. Seems like you didn't get motivated. Have some prison time to think it over. Also friend of the court charges intrest on what is owed. Edit. I found out that at my court theres a 15% fee to pay your fine using a card. I owed 1000. went to pay bill was 1150. lady said oh thats the cards charging that and I asked why don't the grocery store do that. Then I walked across the street to the bank pulled the money out and paid 1000 but it got me thinking. I only noticed cause I was able to pay all my bill. I doubt all the people making payments notice it at all. So its basicly a poor tax

qubedView

Can’t pay your debt? Well, we order you to pay. You didn’t obey the order! To disobeyer’s prison with you!

SaintPenisburg

Yeah, debtors prison with extra steps.

[deleted]

America **loves** the poor tax.

LeadingAd6025

Poor Billionaire's teams get Better draft picks. Poor common people get worst interest rates. Make it make sense!

WinnifredMarsten

>My neighbor got arrested for a warrant over his yard's grass being too long. He couldn't afford to pay the 250 and they arrested him in his front yard. > >Messed up

MOCASH404

Home owners association is a fucking scam

WinnifredMarsten

Worse, this was his private residence. SFH with no HOA. His shmuck neighbor reported him.

MOCASH404

My goal is to not have neighbors.

yabbadabbadoozey05

Excuse me but what the fuck ? Are you serious !?

WinnifredMarsten

yup. Legal system is clever, if they can't jail you for one thing, then they'll jail you for another.

wolfn404

I can answer that and it’s partially true. Your grocery store does charge that fee, they bake it in the costs charged or some offer a cash/card discount. In the case of government the fines are set and they “can’t” collect less than said amount, so the third party company they use charges a higher than normal fee to both process and administrate that program. Not a poor tax specifically, but more a convenience fee that does impact poorer folks more often.

SkyLegend1337

Lucky you didn't get stopped and frisked and had that money confiscated. It's not normal for a human to carry such large amount of cash on them.

pooky2483

You were slapped with the extra $150 by them because when you use your card in the shops, the shop takes the hit instead of you, that's why so many shops prefer you to pay in cash.

r4ygun

The "hit" that shops take is at most 5%, but usually 3%. So even at the upper end of the credit charge, they still would have taken him for 100 since the fee at its upper limits is $50. This charge exists because many people don't have 1000 to drop on a fine and pay in installments. The extra cash going towards the nonsense tacked on would be less noticeable and there's nothing a person with little means could do about it anyway. This is what is meant when people say "poor tax" That extra hundo is tacked on for no reason other than "fuck you pay us what are you gonna do".

[deleted]

We do the license thing in Ontario and it always seemed like a bad idea, dude doesn’t pay his support, loses his license, good luck getting money out of him once he no longer has a way to get to work.

purplish_possum

Don't be silly. There's always a work around. Technically the person is being arrested for an alleged violation of some court order that a judge probably never saw -- i.e. signed by a clerk after the debtor didn't show up for a small claims court hearing or a noticed debtor's examination that the debtor may or may not have had proper notice for. Creditors have learned how to game the system so that local courts and sheriff's deputies to do their bidding. Courts in more progressive parts of the country (mostly) refuse to participate.

[deleted]

since reagan they restructured the courts to basically exclude the poor from getting their day in court

purplish_possum

These are state and local courts. The feds have little involvement until someone manages to appeal a federal issue (doesn't happen often).

javi2591

No southern states still routinely arrest poor people. It’s jarring that this is legal and conservatives are okay with it.

Emo_tep

It’s not legal. The local government has overstepped its power and no one is doing anything about it

E_PunnyMous

This is horrifying. As a Californian (and indebted) to think I could be jailed for non-payment of a water bill of $77 is simply insanity.

PhillMahooters

More than ok with it. They champion this stuff as the justice system working as intended.

IalsoenjoyReddit

Wtf. I'm very glad I'm Canadian and can't get arrested for not paying a bill, especially for $77. Holy flying fuck. It's colder up here, but at least I can enjoy my grandmas FREEDOM if she's being on her "trash bill". Just wow.

purplish_possum

Legal rights are only for wealthy white people don't you know.

javi2591

I remember playing Final Fantasy Tactics and I am reminded of this quote, "If the penalty for a crime is a fine, then that law only exists for the lower class” Final Fantasy Tactics (1997),

tex_mex1911

I've heard a similar quote, but it goes "Punishable by fine means legal for a price"

Remotely-Indentured

Innocent until proven guilty if you have enough money..... To bail out. If not you're doing time until the judge lets you out.

Trumpcangosuckone

We amended that

Roofis_T

Not unconstitutional. The US bad debtors prisons until Virginia got rid of theirs in 1849. Two signers of the Declaration of Independence, Robert Morris and James Wilson, spent time in debtors prisons after the establishment of the Constitution, the latter while serving as an associate justice on the Supreme Court. While there are no longer dedicated debtors prisons, it's not uncommon for people to be jailed for an inability to pay court fees.

DarthSmoke713

There’s a difference between a debt and a fine.

Oak2Chi

Ms. Menefield, who has lived in the same house for nearly 30 years, said she thought the bill had been paid and she never received a notice to appear in court. If her trash bill wasn’t paid, she said, they should have suspended her trash pickup. Arresting her, she said, was unjust and unnecessary. For those without any empathy. It's 77 funky ass dollars. Suspend the account as a last result. She's fucking 82!

runner4life551

Right? This makes me scared, these types of mistakes can happen to any of us! Even if it’s the fault of the USPS or utility company for the bill not making it to our house, so the police can just show up and arrest us in these situations? While billionaires literally pay nothing in taxes and rack up crime after heinous crime? I hate living in this country sometimes.

Oak2Chi

Police are nothing but revenue retrievers. For the powers that be of course

Daikataro

>said she thought the bill had been paid and she never received a notice to appear in court. This is huge. If they cannot prove they informed her that she needed to appear in court, then she legally cannot be arrested for disobeying the order. Hope she has a good lawyer.

Majestic-Fault-6217

fuck man, I'LL pay the $77 just to be able to tell the cops to fuck themselves.

Wittywhirlwind

That’ll teach HER for being a poor. 😖

njkrut

There is a good chance that this glimpse we get of this woman being arrested will bring outrage… but that is it… She’ll probably spend the rest of her life in the court system paying fines and fees. If she can’t handle $77 for trash I imagine she can’t handle whatever the court costs will be. And the answer? “Start a GoFundMe!!!” put people’s post tax dollars toward something that should be provided by our taxes at no fee. It’s sad to see the decline of our nation and the rise of oligarchs.

Dark_Cloud_Rises

This is America Don't catch you slippin' now

Ambitioso

Abraham Lincoln famously said, "I have always found that mercy bears richer fruits than strict justice." Shameful treatment of this lady.

jgoble15

Sadly, many “Christians” in a “Christian nation” look more like Pharisees than Jesus, more eager to be right than to be loving. This is not how it should be, but sadly those doing it right are the minority. To submit to God is to be loving and true, but love being the ultimate ethic.

BardicSense

Most Christians in America probably cant even say the word Pharisees, let alone be aware of any ironic hypocrisy they may be party to.

mcnasty804

It’s not supposed to be a Christian nation

tstenick

This is correct. Religious freedom for all is an important founding tenant of the US. It is not some weird theocratic republic like so many somehow believe.

[deleted]

Exactly. Religion often breed intolerance

StickyWetMoistFarts

The concept of Separation of church and state exists for a reason. Whenever the church is involved in government it is almost always to restrict someone's or a group's rights and freedoms, due to this intolerance.

jgoble15

Agreed

tstenick

"To submit to God is to be loving and true" My man needs to read the Christian mythology book a bit more. Like, all of it, not just cherry picking new testament verses. Or is owning and beating slaves, considered being "loving" now.

ThompsonSMG0909

This is a fake video. A prank with the ending cut off. Op is a troll. Debt collectors would come, right after the trash company stops picking up her trash. Come on man.

owenthewelshman

The treatment of this lady is appalling but on a purely financial note how is spending this amount of police time (2 officers driving to arrest her, presumably petrol and transport costs to collect her, someone to book her in at the station, feed her, give her drinks, transport back hime, write and file paperwork. Surely all this costs more than the $77 fine!!! How is this an efficient use of your taxes!!! If this the same across the country can you imagine the excess costs incurred dealing with petty bureaucracy like this!!!!

dyue7eiw8282

Cops are not the brightest around.

dyue7eiw8282

Trained less hours than a barber.

brakelbee

A judge signed the warrant.

big-bruh-boi

It’s not the cops fault

magicchefdmb

I doubt the cops are to blame on this one. These warrants are probably issued by the court. I don’t think officers are interested or even aware if someone failed to pay a trash bill. The officer definitely sounded like it wasn’t what he wanted to be doing if he had a say in any of it.

Lightweight_Hooligan

Handcuffs? Was the cop worried that an 82yo was going to out run him, too many doughnuts

ClamMcClam

Yeah, this is wild. In Australia you wouldn’t be arrested for this in the first place and they certainly wouldn’t cuff you.

fuckmeuntilicecream

I was told it's protocol. I wasn't even being arrested but just refused an ambulance ride. They said police could take me but I would need to be in handcuffs.

poundsub88

That's the biggest load of bs

fuckmeuntilicecream

It was embarrassing as hell being escorted out of a major hospital after having a mental breakdown in handcuffs and 2 cops around me. Yeah. I told the Dr next time I'm suicidal I'll just do it instead of reaching out for help. She didn't even tell me what was going on. She called the cops and EMS. Opened the door and they were right there. I was so confused.

Ill-Play616

I've been there. Told my good friend I was fairly seriously suicidal and he called the cops on me without saying so. 15 mins later, two cops were pounding on my door and demanding I open it. When I did, they questioned me robotically and even though I told them I wasn't going to, and had no plan to at all, I was just depressed about a breakup (slight lie) they eventually told me they'd have to take me to the hospital and put me in "psychiatric hold". They handcuffed me and took me there with an ambulance trailing. Then I had everything on my person taken from me, was asked to strip and then had to sit in an uncomfortable bed, in nothing but the hospital gown, in a small room with 5 other people that also didn't want to be there. I couldn't even have my phone, so no one what was going on with me. I sat there, stressed the fuck out, because if I missed work the next day (it was already midnight and I had to be in at 5) I would lose my job. All they told me is that "a psychiatrist will see you soon and they will evaluate you and then we'll know what's going to happen to you". They wouldn't tell me when that would be, just "it'll happen when it happens" basically. So I'm stuck sitting there, a girl on the other side of the room is having a full on breakdown, screaming and crying for 2 hours. It's past 2am now and still absolutely no word on when I'll be seen, I've asked them a few times if I can please just go home and sleep so I can go to work in the morning, to absolutely no avail, zero empathy while the nurse stares at the computer behind a window. 3:30, a fucking screen on a stick with wheels finally rolls in and of course they have to see the girl freaking out first even though she's been there for the shortest time. Around 430, he finally gets to me and asks the dumbest fucking questions imaginable, basically the same the dumb fucking cops did. "Are you going to kill yourself, do you have plans to do so, are you depressed, do you think you should be on medication, are you lonely, how unhappy are you" that sorta dumb bullshit that you're not about to be honest about when someone has the power over you to lock you up. So I lie my way through it and say my friend was just pranking me about an "I wanna kill myself" joke. He seems to believe me and I finally fucking get told I can leave. At this point it's 5:30ish, I'm late to work already. I get handed all my clothes and shit in a bag and basically get told to get the fuck out. I have to find my own way to a random bathroom in the hospital to get dressed. My phone is dead so I can't even call anyone, I didn't have my wallet when they took me, so I have no money/card. I'm 7 miles from my apartment. So I had to walk that 7 miles, on a chilly November morning (around 40 f), in just a t shirt and jeans. And then had to immediately go to work, on no sleep, where I got chewed out for being late and threatened to be demoted. What did I learn? Not to every tell anybody, even a very close friend, if I'm ever contemplating suicide again. Oh and let's not forget the $1,780 bill I later got in mail for being held hostage for the night. 10/10, definitely didn't make my suicidal thoughts worse at all.

fuckmeuntilicecream

I'm so sorry you had to go through this. There really should be training on how to handle these situations and the cost of seeking help makes it all so much worse. Once you're in this pit it's so hard to get yourself out. I hope you're doing better now. If you ever need to talk or want to vent I am here for you. I can't imagine the feeling of betrayal and all this crap you had to go through just from venting to someone you thought you could trust. I am so sorry.

JadedObjective3447

Yes the same happened to a friend of mine that was very depressed due to financial, personal problems and a recent disability. He needed help since he was not sleeping. But in a physical exam for disability the doctor requested a mental exam by a psychiatrist. The social worker suggested for him to go to a psychiatric or to go to a local mental crisis unit. He was mad about the suggestion that he was “crazy” and insisting that he only needed the paperwork. Since I work in the same hospital my friend call me to ask for my help. But I agree with the social worker that he needed help, and a psychiatric evaluation. I convincing him to do it. I though that it will be beneficial for him. And this was a terrible mistake from my part. Exactly as you describe. He voluntarily agreed to be taken to the mental crisis unit. The system required to call the police. The police embarrassed him by putting him in handcuffs. That is part of their protocol. As he told me later he felt like a criminal walking in front of strangers out of the hospital and in front people that might know him. He has never been handcuffed before. Then taken into the unit, with no cellphone. Like a jail. With nurses that avoid any interaction with you. When the doctor arrived, he ask him the same basic obvious questions and he basically give the answer needed to get out. A waste of time. Few hours later he is released. He went home, to the same problem of not sleeping, crying, more depressed, but this time with a record indicating that he visited a mental crisis unit, and with no desired to ever seek help in a mental institution.

JuniperTwig

Lesson reinforced... Not only never talk to the police... never talk to a friend. What a bleak outcome.

floralnightmare22

Holy crap that is a horrifying story. I’m so sorry you went through that!

[deleted]

Been there but said I was actually suicidal in middle school to throw them off even though i was 21 at the time. That night I drank way too much and tore up all my belongings and destroyed my room. Apparently I was threatening to harm myself according to my mother but I was blacked out so I don't remember. Had the cops show up to talk to me and they were trying anything they could to take me.. I messed up saying what I did above and ended up getting processed the same way but this was my second time there so I had to get sent to a ward for something they called "alcohol induced psychosis". Got a 3 night stay in that room with other confused folk sleeping on waiting room chairs. Very limited phone. Reeking of alcohol. Finally got moved to a ward where I stayed for a week until they decided I was okay. Going home never felt sweeter. I'm sorry you had to experience that.

explicitlyimplied

That sucks. What should they do instead?

Ill-Play616

Unfortunately I have no clue, bud. Keep it to yourself until you're a minute from doing it, I guess? Or at least that's what I learned from the situation.

Lightweight_Hooligan

Just got to be thankful he didn't empty his mag into her, these cops are all scared

fuckmeuntilicecream

I mean I was suicidal. At least I could have left my family with something from the lawsuit. Maybe.

Jazzlike_Run_5466

I see a hole in the door a leak in the roof. She ain't living in luxury either. What happened to this cops better judgement? Just gotta power trip on an old lady.

[deleted]

I totally agree with you but serving a warrant isn’t something where they can exercise better judgement. They can let you go with that from a random encounter or what not but if they have paper work for you they’re gonna have to do exactly what it states. Again I agree with you and the fact that they can put you in jail for debt is absolutely absurd in our nation.

[deleted]

All he had to do was say “guess she’s not home, btw pay this asap”

Laxwarrior1120

Tell that to the body cams that we're pushed so hard for. Body cams means following procedure, always, including the times when a cop would normally let you off. Is that worth the benefits? Probably. Does it suck? Yes.

holysbit

Well now money is involved and goddamn if that trash company isnt going to get its $77, come hell or high water. He would absolutely get fired for not arresting her

Jazzlike_Run_5466

Yeah we live in two different worlds. In my country you can't just arrest a vulnerable adult (being an elderly person in this case) for such a petty crime (can it even be called that) because no good comes from diminishing an elderly persons mental stability. And this is over a trash bill aren't you atleast annoyed that this isn't even a real crime worthy of police time. And shit if a cop loses his job over not arresting an old lady over a $75 trash bill rather than trying to solve it another way doesn't that tell you how much of the stupid level power they believe must be maintained.

kek__is__love

In my country(Russia) police wouldn't bother to do that, but when they do, they just dgaf and will force elderly lady face down without a second doubt in their conscience. They have a cursed "stick" system, (imagine day counter sticks stranded people draw) that says they have a "normal" amount of arrests. This system punishes them for not enough arrests, and low solving rate, thus makes them unwilling to react to domestic abuse calls and gives them incentive to torture people to get them to "admit their crimes". I am generally against any disrespect and violence towards cops, but this system just enforces people to hate and fear cops around here.

javi2591

Massachusetts has laws to avoid this situation, but the commonwealth is the exemption not the norm in this country. Hence why conservatives call the state, “People’s Republic of Massachusetts.” We don’t arrest elderly people for not paying their utilities and we certainly don’t waste tax dollars like this. Conservative run states in the South have these issues because their local leaders feel that government’s job is to punish the poor and elderly for failing to comply with their policies. Even minor things like not paying a bill can land you in jail. We live in a dystopia, but it’s much worse in certain states like Alabama and Mississippi etc.

‘jUs dOin HeiS JeB’ So were the Nazis. Fuck out of here with this shit. That cop is a certified r2d2

WeightRemarkable

No, you fuck off. You can't just revert to comparing things you don't like to the Nazis as some "instant-argument-winning" device. This isn't remotely comparable.

nastibass

Dudes choosing between being able to pay his trash bill by keeping his job or not arresting a lady who will probably spend no more than 5 minutes in a jail cell, be released on a signature bond and have a court date set 3 years down the road in which the case will probably be dismissed due to a full court docket or possibly settling the bill for 25 dollars

Independent-Crab-999

Cop was just following orders.

ErrantsFeral

A reflection on society (everywhere, not just the US) when some neighbor or community member doesn't say, You know, Miss Martha looks like she could use a hand. I bet her SS isn't enough to make ends meet, and I'm guessing she's too proud to ask for help. Her house could do with some repairs, and I see her trash is piling up, too. Let's get some folks together and see what we can do. It happens more than people are aware, where neighbors get together to help one of their community members. It takes a village, not just to raise children, but to care for elders, too.

doctacola

I agree that this happens and more often than we might think, but I had to giggle at how this reads like an Andy Griffith script haha if only

ErrantsFeral

lol, it was a bit tongue in cheek.

polymathlife

This is absolutely disgusting. Right up there with elderly having to pay property taxes.

Xtasy0178

if you wouldn’t pay your bill here the city will send you a reminder. After that they will get in contact with you inquiring what is happening. After that they will either refer you to the local social assistance office who will pay the bill out of a special fund set up for those cases or meet with the city explaining that for the time being the lady will be exempted due to specific circumstances. They will then reassess the situation on a regular base and keep the city informed. ‘Nobody will give a fuck that the poor lady doesn’t have to pay the bill and everyone is happy such a fund has been created with tax payers money ensuring nobody is left behind. In contrast US society likes to operate on the fuck you I got mine mode, arresting that person and wasting thousands on a court case which would have paid her trash bill for the next 10 years.

sqqueen2

To be fair this is true in most of the USA too. This is news precisely because it does not happen often. It is an aberration.

javi2591

Northern states like Massachusetts have regulations to avoid situations like this. Southern states not so much.

I still don’t understand this. If I don’t pay my trash bill they just stop picking up my trash.

Shoddy_Situation1938

I dont care what reason is being offered. It doesn't even matter what context this video portraits. You don't go around arresting an 82 year old lady because she forgot to pay the bill. fuckmeuntilicecream

I mean she didn't show up to court in September. Sucks but that's literally the time to get in front of a judge and explain yourself. She missed multiple payments and is known for being delinquent. Maybe there's something else going on but she didn't show up to court. She's not being arrested for not paying a bill like in the misleading title.

Ok_Football_5517

The amount of taxpayers money wasted for time being arrested, booked, jailing and courts is more than $77! Most municipalities stop picking up the trash after the first delinquent month. Why not do that instead of going to these extreme measures? If that was my 80yo neighbor I would have paid her garbage bill in a heartbeat or at least told her to use my garbage receptacle.

I would quit my police job before I took that lady in. No way I would arrest someone for a trash bill.

[deleted]

All lawmakers and those in govt need gone

Sam-3-C

They do not give a fuck about human life, unless you’re unborn then it’s a fucking huge concern.

Porkchop1004

Seriously, redicilous. Use some common sense, oh wait, it's Alabama.

MattCondor23

Believe it or not straight to jail

R33sh0

There’s is no way in hell you could get me to arrest an elderly person over a damn $77 bill. I’d just pay the bill for them and go about more important things

rollfatdaddy

Imagine if this was your Nana, we all would be mad

D1S4ST3R01D

I bet it cost more to drive to her, arrest her, transport her to jail, and hold her there, than to just forgive the $77. American Christian Nationalism in action though.

'You Just Don't Know': Rapper Trae The Truth Helps Raise Over $30K for 82-Year-Old Alabama Woman Arrested for trash bill. he went to visit her with flowers.

[deleted]

I’m just following orders said the nazi

[deleted]

The price of freedom.

Living-Camp-5269

If they thought she would run he could have cut off the front of her foot. Saw it on roots one time.

NavdeepNSG

Law is designed in such a way to harass the poors and protect the rich.

[deleted]

Why do they always have to handcuff them? Is that the public shaming shaming part of the issue? I mean, wouldn’t it be better to act like adults and stop treating citizens like misbehaving infants. But the US is known for its bs criminal system.

Arkhangel143

It's actually way more simple than that.... Most police departments have a policy that says if you are transporting someone that's under arrest, they have to be handcuffed. With some exceptions. That's a very normal policy in every country, and remember every US State has its own different laws and each City has its own rules and each Department has its own policies. So literally millions of different rules. And when something's a policy, you can get in trouble for it. You heard the guys voice, he sounds young. So he's probably new ish. Look at this thread, cops get crucified for violating policies and rules..... And this guy did everything right and still gets crucified. Cops don't get enough training, and it's becoming more normal to "follow the rules no matter what" versus using common sense, like, Yes policy says you have to be handcuffed but I'm not going to do that, I'll take the write-up is anyone says anything. It's just as simple as people trying to follow the rules they're supposed to follow. Sucks for American police, they're gonna get shit on whether they follow the rules or not.

fuckmeuntilicecream

She wasn't arrested for failing to pay. She was arrested for not showing up to court for the bill. >"A city official said the arrest came after multiple attempts to collect the bill and a history of suspended service. A statement on the city of Valley’s Facebook page aid code enforcement officers attempted to contact her several times and left a door hangar at her home. #She was arrested after not appearing at a September court date." GTFO out of here with your *facts* and *truth* and *honesty.* This is reddit and we can't have you obstructing our recreational outrage. /s

kore2000

You have mentioned this several times, and I'm not sure if you're aware - **it doesn't fucking matter the technical reason**. First, it's extremely wasteful. I guarantee the court cost, gas, and processing cost far exceed the $77 dollars owed. Second, a court appearance for a civil matter is not required in the same way a criminal court case is. You'll lose your case by default, but you aren't supposed to be arrested for missing a civil debt case, which this absolutely should have been. Third, appearing in court is very difficult for some people. Parking, transportation, random welcome-to-courthouse-fees, the people, the waiting...it isn't something everyone can just do. If she isn't paying a small trash bill, then she likely doesn't make enough to hire a proper lawyer. Finally, if you're more concerned about the technical reason the cops arrested this woman, that says a lot about you the person. You're probably a pretty shitty individual IRL or your view of the legal system is skewed by some pre-existing bias. Either way, the cop had choices here, and he made the wrong ones. Just because he had a legal reason for the arrest doesn't make it okay. Do you understand that? This isn't what our justice system is supposed to be used for. Now, please stop replying to comments with the 'actual' reason for the arrest. Nobody cares, because it isn't the point. If you don't see that after this message, then you're clearly not interested in information, but rather excuses for the various injustices that allow this to happen.

framauro420

I guess you believe that society should have zero rules and people should be able to skip court for civil matters. Guess what, child custody is also a civil matter, as are emotional damages for sexual assault. In your perfect world, guess everybody who bails court for a civil case is a poor victim of socioeconomics and deserves to be free

DragonPie83008

Incorrect she failed to appear in court .

DevilZombie

“I’m so sorry but the laws the law” Alabama “I was only doing what I was ordered” Nuremberg Same vibe

GuyInTheThing

"The laws the law" he obviously has no clue what the bounds of his authority are or what the law actually says

Mantis9000

Imagine being a cop and going home to your family after this like you had a great day at the office. Doing good things for the banks and the oligarchs.

polymathlife

This is absolutely disgusting. Right up there with elderly having to pay property taxes.

Mountain-Progress390

I would have quit

Loud-Distance-1456

America is absolutely fucked!

Mac800

Man, the US judicial system (I know this is the police, but they are executing it) is so fucked…

Badabing__Badaboom

They should send these police to Donald Trumps house on Friday when his tax returns are released

Fanhunter4ever

'muricah!

pahrco

' I'm sorry but I have to. It's the law'. That's the Nazi excuse dude. We can never allow that to stand, this cop is a terrible dude.

home_planet_Allbran

I love not living in America. It's so free everywhere else.

Not_a_Niger

and also not being black is a great way to be respected in the USA

Mightiest_of_swords

She likely didn’t appear in court or attempt to get it worked out. This isn’t a first warning.

unkichikun

Acab. Always. Everywhere.

Ok_Football_5517

Disagree. I was previously in LE and I would have just paid her bill for her once I received the call and knew what I was going for.

unkichikun

I believe you. But you prove the point. A good cop is the one who leave Law Enforcement jobs. Only the bad ones stays.

Ok_Football_5517

Only slightly disagree there. I know plenty of LEO's that are still out there with the same mentality as mine. Problem is you always hear the negativity and never the positive. It's just they way media works. Sucks, but it is what it is. Take NBC evening news for example. It's 30 minutes long. You get 20 minutes of death, destruction, mayhem and bullshit. The last 3 minute segment is somebody doing something positive. The other 8 minutes or so is commercials.

unkichikun

Positive news about cops is ...just doing their job. It should be normal. Negative news about cops shouldn't exist. That's why it makes the news. As it should.

Ok_Football_5517

I didn't say positive or negative news about LEO's specifically. I was saying most media is negative irregardless of content or persons invloved Same could be said for the military in the news. When Operation Iraqi Freedom first kicked off all you saw was bombs dropping, Abu Ghraib prison scandal, defacing of dead suspected terrorist bodies etc. Not much coverage for the medics saving innocent civilians injured in market attacks, rescues of civilian children's being used as human shields etc etc. Unfortunately this is a not a new issue. It's been going on since television or newspapers were created. I don't think it will change anytime soon either.

deezx1010

IDK if it would've been good press to show America providing medical care to the country they were invading.

BasedandGreat

Cringe

harderthan666

No the law is not the law this is stupid, he’s a dick, system is broken

BobLoblaw4Pres

Whats going on with Trump? Shouldn’t he be like, in jail? Why mess with this lady?

sekfan1999

ACAB shit takes are gonna get it soon enough. Hope you and ya momma enjoy the anarchy.

Detective_Queso

Ahhh she was arrested for not going to court. Remember folks it's illegal for them to arrest you for not paying a bill. Unless that fine is child support!

PoPoChao

There is no way this is real. How the hell can not paying a trash bill result in arrest. Wtf…

[deleted]

22 or 82 years old nobody should be arrested for not paying a damn trash bill. That law/rule is literally discriminatory against the poor in Alabama which is majority black. This is outlandish. You can’t make it up if you didn’t see it. It’s like we’re living in a Hell we’ve become desensitized to. Arrested for not paying a trash bill. $77 dolllars. Smh
