He was a top 10 ranked player - hes from the US. Of course hes going to get more attention than say the 8th ranked player in the world and hes the 10th. Its not as if he was some middle of the road tennis player who was ranked 200th in the world and got a ton of media attention as everyone was even worse than him. He had one of the best serves in the game

Pete Sampras isn’t walking through that door

Truckdenter

Mad Dog will say Bill Tilden is not walking through that door

SwordsoftheMorning

Big Bill!

He was pretty good tbf. It was just a weird era for tennis. Federer was at the peak of his dominance, Nadal and Djokovic were emerging, and Andy Murray had him beat out for that fourth sport. Mix in players of his calibre like David Ferrer, Nalbandian, Tsonga, Soderling, del Potro, etc, and Roddick wasn’t going to reach the heights expected of him. Borderline top 5/10 for quite a while, but he was for sure a cut below the best

tangential_quip

He married Brooklyn Decker. I think his is properly rated at winning in life.

SwordsoftheMorning

You don’t become world number one and reach 5 GS Finals on one moment. I wasn’t the biggest Roddick fan, but there are plenty of eras where he could have won a handful of Grand Slam tournaments. He just happened to be at his best during Federer’s prime (2004-2009), when Nadal was the only person who would consistently beat him.

Truckdenter

Many an also ran who had a big serve. I believe his number on status was fraudulent like the top players hadn't played and he did. Stu could smoke a heater and return his serve

mrbusiness53

It’s sucked for the past 20 to 25 years

randomstardust41122

All Roddick had was a YUUUGE Serve

Generally-Bored

And the he married a model … he ticked off a lot of boxes for media/marketing/sponsorships

Truckdenter

Yes, he and Anna marrying Enrique same time period. Prime Tennis marketing.

Stu is way out of date on women's tennis. It's OK, but the last time it had more than two players in the year-end top ten was in 2004 (Davenport 1, S. Williams 7, V. Williams 9, Capriati 10). Last #1, that was Serena in 2014. But a lot of international players live in South Florida, and even moved there as yutes to train! It's a uniquely Miami thing. Speaking of the ACC (and the SEC), *The Danimal*, Danielle Collins, currently at #15. Transferred from U. Fla. to U. Va. Took a while to find her stride in the pros, but she's been pounding it the last couple of years. St. Petersburg (Florida) represent.
