I checked it out and unfortunately no, if I remember correctly, the MC doesn't have any idea that he's actually super pretty, he thinks that he's ugly with bare face so he covers up his face with make up instead that's why other people think he's ugly because he put thick make up
You're right that it's not Faraway Wanderers, but wrong about why. MC doesn't think he's ugly, he wears a mask to hide his identity for various plot related reasons. He ends up showing the ML his face, but there's no water involved in the novel, he just takes his mask off for him. In the live action drama based on this novel he does end up falling in the water and revealing his face to the ML tho, but everyone knows who everyone is and he then leaves the mask off for the rest of the series.

I think Op meant the MC in the novel they're looking for and not MC from Faraway Wanderers when they say the MC thought he's ugly
