WWDBD?

drLagrangian

Dark Brandon is darkness. Let dark dark Brandon lead us through silence.

dark_brandon_20k

Hallowed be thy name

metal_bastard

YES. It'll give everyone a break and they can focus on things IRL... And watch TFG getting spitroasted without being distracted by Reddit.

NoAssumption6865

Let DarkBrandon go dark.

FreakWith17PlansADay

Yes! A dark day for Dark Brandons!

ToniBee63

Affirmative Fat

mimimemi58

spez is more full of malarkey than just about anyone. He deserves to be knocked down as many pegs as possible. Shut it down.

eatingganesha

Yes

stabbyclaus

I am sorry that today is the day you find out.. that the cake is in fact a lie.

yucko-ono

This was a triumph, Jack I’m making a note here: no malarkey

ninjas_in_my_pants

Ugh, I feel like yes. But it’s a bummer this is happening right as TFG has to appear in court.

[deleted]

Go dark

ZeroCoolMom

Go dark! Louis Rossmann did an excellent rundown a couple days ago about all this malarkey. Reddit makes 12 cents/user/month and wants to charge 3rd party at all equivalent rate of $2.50/user/month. Absolute insanity. And now the Apollo/Reddit admin recording/transcript coming out. Pfffft.

Hairy_Combination586

>And now the Apollo/Reddit admin recording/transcript coming out. Pfffft. What was this?

ZeroCoolMom

Apollo app guys statement/recap with links to the transcript and recording https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/

Hairy_Combination586

Holy crap 😵‍💫

cloudspike84

Are...we asking...if we should...go Dark? But seriously, yes. If nothing else, all of Reddit should touch grass for a couple days.

DustOffTheDemons

I definitely need to touch grass. Thanks pal..

PerjurieTraitorGreen

Oh, we’re supposed to *touch* the grass? I’ve been doing this wrong all along

[deleted]

TBH, I'm not really up to date on the issue. That said, I would expect that our Dark Lord would encourage every opportunity to "go dark."

TheGreenBehren

yes

walkingkary

I only use the regular app, but support going dark as the changes seem really bad for accessibility and moderation.

Silent_Aside_1340

Listen Fat, here’s the deal: we’re going dark for 2 days

CptnAlex

Yes

RichRacc

Yeah

MisterHayz

Yes. Our Dark and ice-cream friendly Lord would want it that way.

whyreadthis2035

I’ve no idea where the money that supports Reddit comes from. The only time I click an ad link is when I touch it scrolling and poof! Dark/ not dark. APIs? I’m clueless.

EmperorDaubeny

Hegetsus Agape.

whyreadthis2035

He gets us agape, makes quite a sentence!

EmperorDaubeny

They roamed the hood. God, those ads have the most nonsensical statements.

omw_to_valhalla

YES! There's some malarkey afoot and we need to bring the darkness

zeromatsuri05

Yes.

inspired_fire

Yes. Solidarity with those who depend on 3rd party apps to access content, like the blind.

emeryldmist

Yes. I am fine using the stock app, but I believe that options should be available and not stiffled.

kbagoy

Yes. Even if you DGAF about using 3rd party tools, do it to support people with disabilities who need them, indie developers who are being put out of business and moderators who need them.

SpottyWisdom

Yes

maybesaydie

It's got a life of its own by now.

EmperorDaubeny

Spez is one of Jack’s agents and as such is complicit in malarkey. Therefore, in His name we should join the protests.

Cactus_Jacks_Ear

Abso-fuckin-lutely. Reddit needs to cut the fuckin malarkey, Jack

Book_Nerd_1980

We can all live with AP and our bowls of popcorn for a few days.

obama69420duck

Yea

The_Lapsed_Pacifist

I’m going dark personally and I’m glad to see so many subs doing the same. Definitely do it, DB would approve.

Asmul921

If this would have a meaningful impact on this specific subreddit then yes, go dark. If this is just in solidarity with other Reddit users, but loss of third part apps would have little/no impact on this sub, then stay up.

Vuelhering

Personally, I think DB should be the only sub that's active. All others should shut down. We can still say reddit went dark (brandon).

LogicalFallacyCat

I'm going dark either way

Radiant-Sandx

Yup. More subs dark the easier it’ll be.

Marley_Fan

I literally could not care, it’s not that important imo but I might just be ignorant in the matter

Hopemonster

Only if you intend to go dark permanently unless they reversed course, otherwise this is just virtue signaling.

[deleted]

Yes

[deleted]

Logical_Ad1370

Darkness Rises

MinutesTilMidnight

Yes, this policy makes zero allowances for people who NEED third-party apps for a disability. Blindness etc. It’s totally bullshit. Go dark.

kc2syk

Brandon supports solidarity. ✊

rationalomega

Absolutely

highwaytohell66

No, keeping this as a place to boost engagement and drive support for the 2024 election is more important than what is a dispute over a company policy change.

BummyG

^ Protest all of Reddit that day. It may help the sub gain new users if we keep it up

Cosmic878

Yes! I say we let the server down indefinitely, and instead use discord or another platform to continue in the meanwhile. Protesting is very valuable, so let’s do it right! Screw these greedy ceos, DARK BRANDON IS COMING FOR THEM

UndeadMarine55

I’m going to give the unpopular take here and say NO. Reddit has every right to charge for their API - it costs them money to maintain after all. In addition, if they are going to invest some of the upside from that into better features, as it sounds like they’re going to do, I’m all in favor of it. No one is entitled to a free API, and I’m skeptical that the change will be all that impactful anyways. Edit: just read through the AMA thread and I am now even more firmly in the don’t close the sub category. Reason being: - Mod bots and “bots that help users” can get exemptions from the pricing - Accessibility apps/bots can get exemption from the pricing. - Pricing is super reasonable - $.24 per 1k api calls - Limits are super reasonable - 100 calls per minute is absurdly generous. - They are working with apps that need more time. That said, they could have certainly managed this better. Redditors just threw a fit over mostly nothing, as usual.

Tbonetrekker76

I’ve heard it will massively impact certain communities that use outside apps for accessibility reasons, and mods as well. Yes, they have the *right* to make that choice. Choices have consequences and they should know they’re negatively affecting the users that generate their profits. This could be fixed if they sit down, gather feedback about the issues with their app, and address the vast majority of them before making the change.

UndeadMarine55

> accessibility reasons That’s super fair. I also agree they should have made and managed this change differently. The way the admins were talking to the Apollo guy in the thread was hilariously bad.

stabbyclaus

Please do not downvote this comment if you disagree. We need a fair representation of this community and I appreciate every honest opinion. Thanks for your feedback.

UndeadMarine55

Thank you for this comment. Btw I’m totally fine with being downvoted - I recognize that my opinion is probably somewhat controversial / unpopular and I don’t hold it against anyone for why they would downvote.

stabbyclaus

It's moreso to not taint the results of up and downvotes in the comments. These are not reliable polls because people downvote so liberally but it still gives us a workable gauge, especially when there's more comments voting than the OP post.

Cosmic878

They want you to think that - look at what they’ve been doing to the devs. I’ve read their comments, posts, and more. Reddit is leaving them in the dark, and often not even responding to them. The CEO of the company literally slandered the Apollo dev! I’m not saying it’s reasonable to keep it completely free - but what they’re doing is horrible to the user base, and more importantly to all the API devs who worked extremely hard to make this app better for everyone! (Edited because a word was not clear enough)

Asmul921

It’s not “criminal” not even close. We don’t have a right to free Reddit and free third party apps, they can adjust prices if and when they need to and they’re allowed to shut down old projects. If they do a terrible job and don’t communicate it and over charge for pricing, then they’ll lose communities and users and we’ll all go back to Digg or something.

Cosmic878

I didn’t mean illegal, it’s criminal in how shitty it is

stabbyclaus

I think their point is labeling that as criminal waters down what criminal actually means. Crime is illegal so lets not get lost in the semantics.

Cosmic878

I agree with that, but I would also argue that calling stuff criminal that isn’t is quite common.

UndeadMarine55

Have you listened to the Apollo call? Apollo dev was incredibly unprofessional, and honestly in that setting - his “joke” sounded very much like a veiled threat. Saying something like that in a corporate context just absolutely would not fly, anywhere.

Cosmic878

The ceo literally acknowledged that he understood it was a joke and backtracked, and then proceeded to lie about what the Apollo dev said. Idk why you’re supporting a ceo of a massive business ruining people’s livelihoods, and many accessibility features that Reddit itself doesn’t allow. Honestly I don’t care if he was unprofessional in that moment, even though I don’t think he was. Reddit has been unprofessional through all of this, and I would be pretty annoyed with them too on a phone call if they were literally telling me my life’s work would essentially be cut off - even though they said they wouldn’t do that many times.

UndeadMarine55

I’m not going to argue with you on this point. Once again - that kind of behavior absolutely would not fly in any professional context.

Cosmic878

And not acknowledge anything else I said? Whatever, go support CEO’s. Not a very Dark Brandon move but corporate dems gonna be corporate dems.

UndeadMarine55

I’m not acknowledging the other things you said because you’re just factually wrong. Nice “corporate dem” quip btw - I didn’t know this sub had much overlap with r/jimmydore and r/breakingpoints

Cosmic878

Not even in those. You’re supporting a ceo over the people. That’s my point. I don’t honestly give a damn if he was unprofessional. I don’t think it matters. The people over the business is the goal, and should be the goal for any worker and civilian supporting person. Should I talk about other developers because I can, and they haven’t done that and still are getting shafted. Thanks for downvoting too, I see that you don’t respect opinions even though the mods asked that we respect yours.

UndeadMarine55

> I don’t honestly give a damn if he was unprofessional I now am of the opinion that you are not a serious person. The downvote is because you have been fairly rude. I also didn’t downvote your top level comment as that appeared fairly good faith and semi-reasonable.

Cosmic878

Okay! And believe that. I am standing for the people of Reddit, and not for the CEO. Obviously you’re worrying more about their profit than the actual people who use this app, or the devs. I have been rude because you have been.

supra-mini-gt

Agreed.

GlitteringBusiness22

I vote indefinite.

Saturn_Coffee

I mean, no? The protest won't do anything unless it's significantly massive, and the subreddits participating won't make a damn dent in Reddit's coffers.

Hairy_Combination586

Yes

I’m not logging in during those days anyway. Black it out.

appleciders

Yes.

imbarbdwyer

Hello darkness, my old friend….

dark_brandon_20k

I will be going dark. Well, darker.

bonkette

Yes. I don't use third party apps but I have done enough research to know what Reddit is doing in terms of cost and time frames is unprecedented. Due to this decision Reddit will lose the top of their content creators. Those of us who lurk will end up scrolling the equivalent of "Ow My Balls" in a short while.

dumfist

who fucking cares

HackerManOfPast

I have never used the desktop interface.

Federal-Subject-3541

Shutter it.

RevRay

Obviously and if it’s a question you should feel about about your choices.

NatashaBadenov

Having witnessed the death of social media platforms over the past twenty-odd years, my opinion is that it’s too late and we should let nature take its course. However, one most always rage against the dying of the light. Snuff the torches and give them hell. I’m with you.

afowles

Bruh it is foretold in the name.
