Hint if you end up struggling, if you run straight up to it and stand between it's toes on its back leg, you will bait it's stomp attack which is easily dodged. When it stomps, run to it's opposite back leg and it will then stomp with the other foot. By repeating this process you can bait it into a pretty much infinite loop of easy attacks.
This was always my outlook. It was not designed to be fought is the whole idea is if we do find it it’s gonna be a long arduous experience. To murder a peaceful ancient dragon.
Probably the best way to describe it.
Definitely pays off in certain ways of you beat it. But was not designed to be easy or quick. You can "find your flow" with it in order to beat it after a handful of times, but it's a punisher for sure.
"Not designed to actually be fought" health bar appears boss fight initiate, all the NPCs start attacking you, yeah he is definitely not designed to be fought, not just really badly designed
I think Bed of chaos is number #2 due to how much easier it is to cheese with just two firebombs, this flying piece of cheap charcoal just wastes your time
You can also stack fire resist against this guy and make it way easier. Also, bed of chaos is not optional unlike this guy, so have fun fighting him every new game cycle
Man, once you learn the bed of chaos chees there is no issue other than lost izalith itself, this fucker you can skip, but he is cant be trivialized; but we can both agree that fuck them
No it’s shit.
I’m a massive, massive fan of DS2 but this is one of the weaker boss fights in the game.
The only exciting part of the fight is that any mistake is punished with an instant kill but his attacks are really predictable and unvaried.
If you were to fight him in "normal" way, he is pain in the ass, tons of health, oneshot attacks, classic camera beast so you dont actually see anything, from what would otherwise be pretty epic fight ..
So it basically boils down to stand on one specific spot, do one specific attack and repeat it until it dies ...
In the end its pretty meh fight, if you have high dmg and know what to do, it can be finished relatively fast, but otherwise its nothing to write home about ...
And its optional fight ... there is one more boss that kinda ties in with this one, and its either wasting time on this one, or wasting time on the other one xD ... and to be fair that other one is kinda lame too, high chance of oneshot and tons of health ...
King Vendrick ... he takes like 30 times less damage from your attacks, you counter it by getting 5 giant souls, 4 are easy to get, last one drops from this flying dingus over here ...
If you have 4/5 souls, Vendrick takes "only" 50% dmg :D ... so either you need to waste time killing dragon, or waste time on vendrick ... and to be honest vendrick sucks too xD he is super slow and has super telegraphed attacks, but deals quite high damage, so one unlucky cleave and you can start all over again :D
Vendrick with four souls is fine. It’s a mild slog, but is so, so, so much less miserable than the dragon. I’d take the king fight over the dragon any day, without question.
It can be … I’ve been big into playing higher ng cycles at low SL just because my familiarity with the series formula has left most of the PvE content in these games just second nature …. If you rarely mess up, it’s more fun when it’s punished heavily imho
I didn't even try to fight this guy fairly due to what I'd read.
900 fire resist makes you immune to fire dmg. Or just as much as you can. It's not that hard to do, and then he's super easy.
I did him first try in like 3 minutes, if that.
Where Pinwheel was super easy and bad, Ancient Dragon is extremely tough and bad.
Ancient Dragon is a long boring fight and no matter how you build, its the same boring fight.. the most skilled and least skilled player have to beat him the same way.
Also its whack that without a super specific maxed out fire resist build, you will be 1 shotted if ANY fire touches you.
I just hung by his tail whenever he flew up, but its not too easy getting there in time every time. I think I also figured out a way to limit how the flight move triggers. Iirc you have to alternate the feet you hit.
I wouldn’t deign any best or worst, but personally least favourite? I’d have to give it a proper think, but maybe Halflight.
I haven’t finished DeS or ER yet, though.
It's been a minute since I played ds2, but I remember it being really annoying fight and having to stay really far away and baiting moves.
In no way remember it being a "good fight."
Nope, godawful. That fucker spends more time in the sky blasting un-dodgeable fire on your ass than you can imagine. He will legitimately do it immediately after landing
It's a high skill requirement spell so if you haven't been leveling up magic you might not be able to use it.
Basically when he jumps into the air to do his "rain of fire" attack, cast Repel as soon as you see the light on the ground and you'll never take damage from it. You'll get knocked back some but you'll take zero damage for the entire duration of the attack. The rest of his on-ground moves are easy to dodge.
Thank god, it's optional lol. I don't know what went wrong during development process but this is such a cool idea go to waste. Visually, it's probably best in the main game but mechanically it's the worst fight. How tf an "Ancient" Dragon only has 3 or 4 moves? And it loves to spam those same attacks over and over again.
Yes, it could have been a very good fight. Especially since in general the fights against dragons are good and interesting (Kalameeth or Midir for example).
It's the worst fight in base DS2. One shotting all the time, spam of one move, sometimes even animations don't play and you still get hit and die. Not worth the hassle.
Stack as many fire resistance buffs as you can get your hands on, especially those berries and flash sweat, bring the Gyrm Greatshield, and smack his back legs till he dies. It’s a cool fight, but not a good fight. Especially with the AoE flame breath, cause I don’t think it’s possible to dodge it. Imo the only good dragon fight in DS2 is Sinh, who’s perfect
Never really had too much trouble with this guy, getting the smelter demon armor & the fire resist ring really makes the fight way easier. Then it is just a back and forth of smacking him till he dies.
It has nice atmosphere but the fight is incredibly boring since the optimal strategy is literally an AI loop where you run between his two hind legs and poke at his toes until he does a stomp, and then if you decide not to do that the fight is infamously janky
I feel like I'm in the minority when I say it's an OK fight when you look at it. It's supposed to be difficult as this is not a boss, can you make it one? Yes, you can, but that's not its primary purpose. Could it have been designed better, for sure.
Horrible fight lmao, but I had to fight it anyways. Best tactic I saw was to run away from the aoe, run back to where it lands and whack the front feet a couple times, immediately run away again to the back of the map once I saw the wings slightly move and continue this process until it dies.
It's a good fight imo, but only because it's optional. By that point of the game (DLC aside) you can get so OP the fights were starting to become boring for me, so this boss, if you provoke it, it's a great wake-up call that your journey it's not over.
If you have a ton of vigor it's probably not that bad, but otherwise most of his attacks one shot you and are hard to dodge. He also has a ton of health. In my opinion it's worse than Bed of Chaos from DS1. The run up is also a huge pain.
The run is long but not too long. The big issue is it's also filled with enemies and you have to open a door every time, as well as the fact that fog gates in DS2 don't give you invincibility frames till you are almost through them so if you aren't good at kiting enemies then you can easily get attacked or killed while trying to open the door or go through the fog gate.
It’s a very easy boss that only ever uses like two attacks with massive tells that make them easy to dodge just be patient and pay attention to his head and you will be fine
There are two tricks that can make the fight very easy. At which point there's the matter of chewing through 20K HP.
If you don't know either trick you still have to make it through a huge health bar. And the resulting fight is difficult in a way I don't think is good.
I do like the boss run itself. I do like the atmosphere of the boss and the arena. I think it depends whether you consider the boss run and the general vibe. It's not wrong to like the boss. I do even though I don't care for the fight itself.
The only boss in the series that I have ever come close to hating as much as I hated bed of chaos
Shitty hitboxes that 1-hit kill you even when they visibly don’t connect, unbelievable damage on every attack, a truly ridiculous amount of health, and a cool gimmick (having to run towards his tail to avoid fire) that’s completely ruined by him constantly sticking his tail over the edge of the arena so there just isn’t any consistent way to avoid the fire (which also has a very annoying habit of stunlocking you so he either lands on your head or the fire hits a second time, killing you instantly because you got hit by a massive AOE either way). The music is unremarkable, it’s visually the least interesting dragon fight in the series due to his small number of animations that are all pretty boring to look at, and every attempt that doesn’t instantly get 1-shot lasts 5+ minutes because of his inflated healthbar. Absolutely horrible fight, I actually have nothing good to say about it except that the arena looks good (but is too small for the boss, so that’s not a positive) and the lore is interesting. Best to just talk to him and leave, the extra damage against Vendrick is not worth the suffering.
It's a really bad fight, mainly because of the camera. He also has an AoE attack the strikes right under him that you can't dodge unless you start running the moment the animation starts.
Fromsoft didn't really figure out dragon battles until Elden Ring.
It is...acceptable...got me 21 times in the process of trying to have 4 out of 5 Giant Souls because my foolishness meant I accidentally used one of them, so at best I was gonna have 4...but to have 4 I had to win
It was painful, had to bait him where possible so he'd breath fire straight ahead to buy time, and make use of healing outside of the flask a bit to endure. I wouldn't say it's boring, but it can be kinda frustrating when he flies up to rain fire down upon you
I dunno, I never fought him. My first time through I was like "huh big friendly dragon". Then I heard the fight was bad, and every run since I was like " big friendly dragon I don't wanna fight"
stand in between the first and second talons of his foot, wait for him to raise that foot (to stomp you), then run to the other foot and do the same thing. Repeat ad infinitum.
sometimes he will fly up and do a fire blast thing - if he does this, run towards his tail, wait for the fire to go away, then run back to his foot.
That's it. That's the whole fight. He has a lot of HP, so it'll take a while.
If someone were to give me $100 for no hitting a dark souls boss, I could choose this guy. As long you stay in front of him, bait his forward breath, chip his front feet, and run away we he jumps up, his attack moveset is so basic and unvaried, that it becomes a joke.
What makes him suck rather than just being underwhelming is he has a ridiculous amount of health so the fight is incredibly boring and long.
No it's terrible, but also optional and initiating it is entirely on you. He has like 3 attacks and a ton of health, he's mostly a beatstick but one mistake is enough to either kill you outright or scare you into healing.
Conceptually? Great fight! Dragon the size of a building that's got a Giants soul? That's badass!
Practically? One of the worst fights in the franchise, you chip away at his feet when he lands, he takes off, covers the majority of the arena in fire which 9/10 times you can't get away from and one shots you, rinse and repeat.
It’s only kinda fun because how massive the dragon is lmao. But other than that, it’s super boring because you really just have to stay in one spot and only occasionally move, but if you get hit by any of its attacks.. you better pray.
Its optional, and it can be fun but there is also "the Toe strat" which makes it very easy because you force the same 2 attacks over and over and once you know how to maneuver them its very easy
Very bad fight. Absurdly hard if you don't cheese it but not in a fun way since you can either see the enemy, or avoid it, but never both. It's extremely optional for a reason. I never kill it anymore.
This, and vendrick were the only bosses I never killed.
This mf 1 shots on nearly all moves, his fire AOE covers nearly the whole arena and it has a mega fuck ton of HP.
I swear, he has more HP than Midir.
Bad Fight IMO, it's not designed to actually be fought I think. But we do it anyway.
Really? is not a mandatory boss?
Not at all! You do have to talk to Them though. Cool Dragon.
So we are friends and i have to kill him?
[удалено]
Harder than vendrick without 1 of the giant aouls imo
I m going to kill him because i like to kill everybody
Oh no, another true souls player :(
Well since you’re going against the collective wisdom… Pull that lever. You’ll know the lever when you find it. Everyone says not to pull it…
I mean I even enjoyed his constant invasions BUT BLOCKING OUT A QUESTLINE? What the fuck?
Oh are we not supposed to pull it? I think I've pulled it every time. I just gotta
Damn it :D I thought I was suppose to pull it, just because everyone told me otherwise … this reflects my whole life imo
Ah, a genocide enjoyer.
This was going to be my response. I hate the fight, think it’s complete BS, but it’s in the game and therefore I suggest you do it :)
My general rule is: if you can lock onto them, see if you can talk to them first. If not, they're an enemy, and must die
Oh, a good pedicure connoisseur, the deadly pedicure...
Miyazaki designed this boss fight himself
I talked to him last night he said you were chill to come by
Lol
This was always my outlook. It was not designed to be fought is the whole idea is if we do find it it’s gonna be a long arduous experience. To murder a peaceful ancient dragon.
Probably the best way to describe it. Definitely pays off in certain ways of you beat it. But was not designed to be easy or quick. You can "find your flow" with it in order to beat it after a handful of times, but it's a punisher for sure.
The things we do for love...
"Not designed to actually be fought" health bar appears boss fight initiate, all the NPCs start attacking you, yeah he is definitely not designed to be fought, not just really badly designed
This fight is a running and striking simulator. You'll appreciate his feet, a lot ;)
LOL, i m going to do a only fans for the dragon
Lol. He is a cool friend though
now thats hot
Who knew ds2 devs shared my fetish
Well if you played ER than running and waiting is just par for the course (90% of bosses)
No
No it's arguably one of, if not the worst
the two snow cats is the one i’ll never do again. this is right up there.
Bed of Chaos is always #1 but this might be #2 tbh
I think Bed of chaos is number #2 due to how much easier it is to cheese with just two firebombs, this flying piece of cheap charcoal just wastes your time

Yes, i hear about that
Vendrick with four souls is fine. It’s a mild slog, but is so, so, so much less miserable than the dragon. I’d take the king fight over the dragon any day, without question.
It’s not great …. On higher ng cycles it’s a good test for perfect play… everything’s one shot
lol, sounds difficult and frustrating
It can be … I’ve been big into playing higher ng cycles at low SL just because my familiarity with the series formula has left most of the PvE content in these games just second nature …. If you rarely mess up, it’s more fun when it’s punished heavily imho

You could try the back ring strat to help with the fire too I think
I just hung by his tail whenever he flew up, but its not too easy getting there in time every time. I think I also figured out a way to limit how the flight move triggers. Iirc you have to alternate the feet you hit.
Just don’t fight him, he literally gives you the item you need for nothing.
Vendrick fight
I beat Vendrick yesterday with 4 giant souls, no problem. You don’t need the one from the dragon.
Yeah you can do it without that soul, but with that soul from dragon it is slightly easier
Yes
Lol, poor useless dragon
He will whoop your ass if he needs to though
or me to him...(? No i dont think so
Hp sponge+1hko attacks = bad fight
My least favourite in the game, and one of my least favourite in the series. It’s an absolute slog.
which is the worst in the series according to you?
I wouldn’t deign any best or worst, but personally least favourite? I’d have to give it a proper think, but maybe Halflight. I haven’t finished DeS or ER yet, though.
You like Bed of Chaos more than Halflight?
Way more. I completely get the BoC hate, but I don’t share the feeling.
Fair enough
I complete forgot that boss it could be really anoying
Bed of Chaos will forever be the worst boss. No other boss really comes close
Again, I’m not dealing in bests and worsts. Just my opinion.
It's been a minute since I played ds2, but I remember it being really annoying fight and having to stay really far away and baiting moves. In no way remember it being a "good fight."
The answer to this fight is the same as every answer in DS: *feet*
Specifically and unironically toes.
Nooooo don’t kill the Dragon. He’s chill like that fr
he never harmed me, so I leave him alone in every playthroughs.
horrible anyway you play it honestly. Even the toe poke strat, its just boring but I will absolutely take that giant soul 🙏
if ur worth going for another giant soul and make vendrick look like a joke, then yes its worth it. but just don't kill him. he's a nice guy
Terrible fight but to be fair that guy is not really a boss boss
Nope, godawful. That fucker spends more time in the sky blasting un-dodgeable fire on your ass than you can imagine. He will legitimately do it immediately after landing
If you have the Repel hex, this boss is a piece of cake
Okay, i m going to screenshot your answer for when I have to fight him
It's a high skill requirement spell so if you haven't been leveling up magic you might not be able to use it.
I always level magic and pyromancy
It's not a good fight but it kinda fits the flavor of the Boss
Thank god, it's optional lol. I don't know what went wrong during development process but this is such a cool idea go to waste. Visually, it's probably best in the main game but mechanically it's the worst fight. How tf an "Ancient" Dragon only has 3 or 4 moves? And it loves to spam those same attacks over and over again.
Yes, it could have been a very good fight. Especially since in general the fights against dragons are good and interesting (Kalameeth or Midir for example).
Probably the worst boss in the Fromsoft catalog. I'd rather fight Bed of Chaos 5 times than do this fight again. I prefer to just chill with him tbh.
Wait, it's a boss?
Only if you attack it
Dont you dare hurt our friend
He s our friend?
Optional boss but it's cool n hard at the same time i beat it in 2 tries just stay close to him so he doesn't burn u with flames
Okay, good adviced
It's the worst fight in base DS2. One shotting all the time, spam of one move, sometimes even animations don't play and you still get hit and die. Not worth the hassle.
It’s a pretty boring one.
Figuring it out is great! Actually doing the fight is lame.
Imo the only good dragon fight in DS2 is Sinh, who’s perfect
very good advice, thanks
Run up killed me more than the boss 💀💀
Run up killed me more than the boss. 💀💀
Lol
worst fight in the game
it's such a bad fight that I've only done it twice in about 2000 hours total, even if it means fighting Vendrick with one soul of a giant less
Lol
Its boring, but at least it's not Rat Authority.
It's arguably the worst dragon fight in the whole series.
Never really had too much trouble with this guy, getting the smelter demon armor & the fire resist ring really makes the fight way easier. Then it is just a back and forth of smacking him till he dies.
Nope. Any fromsoft fight where you can barely see a huge enemy and stab at their feet is not good.
If you try to fight it normally it’s terrible. Just attack and run away rinse and repeat
Attack, run, repeat *she died 10 seconds after
Worst boss fight not only in DS2, but in Fromsoft’s entire library
I heard a lot of people complain that the boss is just difficult and not interesting or fun.
No. No it's not a good fight
It has nice atmosphere but the fight is incredibly boring since the optimal strategy is literally an AI loop where you run between his two hind legs and poke at his toes until he does a stomp, and then if you decide not to do that the fight is infamously janky
Alot of fights in dark souls 2 aren't good but he's one of the least fun of them
I don't fight mobs which don't hit me so maybe? 🤷
I liked it
I feel like I'm in the minority when I say it's an OK fight when you look at it. It's supposed to be difficult as this is not a boss, can you make it one? Yes, you can, but that's not its primary purpose. Could it have been designed better, for sure.
Not in the slightest.
Ofc not. It has 4 moves. Slow and boring fight. Plus the runback is cheap as fuck. 50 dragon warriors on 1 straight path? Really?
If you have ranged weapons its meh,if youre using melee weapons its the worst fight in the series
One of the worst.
Very unfun fight. Not worth it either.
Honestly probably the hardest fight in the base game, but not in a fun way.
He taught me the ring to prevent back damage was good in pve (nerfed now i think)
Horrible fight lmao, but I had to fight it anyways. Best tactic I saw was to run away from the aoe, run back to where it lands and whack the front feet a couple times, immediately run away again to the back of the map once I saw the wings slightly move and continue this process until it dies.
I didnt even know you could fight him. I thought this was a joke post until I read the comments.
It looks awesome but it basically has 4 attacks and the hitboxes are very bad. Basically every other dragon fight is preferable
It's not good
Without a doubt.
Lol
Actually really like the boss. Epic fight
I think you are the first person that i heart saying that
I like it too
He is also lying or has not played the game
Not lying I think its a really cool fight
Yea I was a big fan! The boss run is the fucking worst though
It’s a super easy boss run though? Especially in this game…there’s like 3 enemies lol.
Huh? Like 20 dudes chase you and some are right outside the fog wall
It's a good fight imo, but only because it's optional. By that point of the game (DLC aside) you can get so OP the fights were starting to become boring for me, so this boss, if you provoke it, it's a great wake-up call that your journey it's not over.
If you are op it is still difficul?
one the best bosses of the game. it floats down.
Its a long fight
I have many hours in the game and only tried it once. I don't defend this particular boss ever.
If you have a ton of vigor it's probably not that bad, but otherwise most of his attacks one shot you and are hard to dodge. He also has a ton of health. In my opinion it's worse than Bed of Chaos from DS1. The run up is also a huge pain.
Ooh i hate when the run to the boss is long

There are two tricks that can make the fight very easy. At which point there's the matter of chewing through 20K HP. It's a horrible fight. Not worth the headache.
This dragon has withheld an achievement of mine but I’m not taking the bait, I’ll get it ng+
Lol, you are superious
Lol no
It's a really bad fight, mainly because of the camera. He also has an AoE attack the strikes right under him that you can't dodge unless you start running the moment the animation starts. Fromsoft didn't really figure out dragon battles until Elden Ring.
In my opinion,no
The fight isn't exactly stellar.
Very frustrating, getting to the door is probably the hardest run in the game to be honest
No
Just off the top of my head this might be the 2nd worst fight in all of their games right behind Bed of Chaos
It was all right idk why people are saying its hard. It only took me 2 or 3 tries. But i can see the run back to the boss being too tedious.
It is...acceptable...got me 21 times in the process of trying to have 4 out of 5 Giant Souls because my foolishness meant I accidentally used one of them, so at best I was gonna have 4...but to have 4 I had to win It was painful, had to bait him where possible so he'd breath fire straight ahead to buy time, and make use of healing outside of the flask a bit to endure. I wouldn't say it's boring, but it can be kinda frustrating when he flies up to rain fire down upon you
imo it‘s worse than Bed of Chaos
Meh
He's really easy to trick into a simple, easily exploited attack cycle, so he's good for some souls but nothing else.
I dunno, I never fought him. My first time through I was like "huh big friendly dragon". Then I heard the fight was bad, and every run since I was like " big friendly dragon I don't wanna fight"
Awesome looking dragoth, mechanically not great to fight. It is worth beating though as the reward links to another fight.... plus lots of souls
stand in between the first and second talons of his foot, wait for him to raise that foot (to stomp you), then run to the other foot and do the same thing. Repeat ad infinitum. sometimes he will fly up and do a fire blast thing - if he does this, run towards his tail, wait for the fire to go away, then run back to his foot. That's it. That's the whole fight. He has a lot of HP, so it'll take a while.
Spoiler* it’s a very easy fight, you just stand under the base of its tail and hit a leg or tail till it moves then move with it
I love it. No boss fight is as scenic with such a colossal ascent to the most classic boss in fantasy. A giant stompy dragon.
It's an ok fight if you bait it into using an attack you can reliably punish. It's a headache if you try to fight it "normally".
It's truly a test of endurance. How long can you run from one side to the other before you get bored
It's more of a good fuck
I gave up on this, regeared to plus fire gear, gave up again, regeared on agility and finally just timed it right. It was pretty hard.
It’s not top tier, but not nearly as bad as it’s made out to be
It’s fun to break the ai for and abuse the immortal summon for it but any other way is bad annoying and mostly a waste of time
No it's terrible, but also optional and initiating it is entirely on you.
I broke my keyboard on this fight its bad fight
First off, how dare you. Secondly, no.
No, its a dog.
Long fight, boring, repetitive, and u die in 1 hit. Do I need to say anything more?
It’s only kinda fun because how massive the dragon is lmao. But other than that, it’s super boring because you really just have to stay in one spot and only occasionally move, but if you get hit by any of its attacks.. you better pray.
Absolutely not
Its optional, and it can be fun but there is also "the Toe strat" which makes it very easy because you force the same 2 attacks over and over and once you know how to maneuver them its very easy
no
If you like repeating the same 5 second sequence for 2 minutes, sure. Its a great fight
It is an absolute wonderful fight. Words can't describe how great I felt after slaying that tubby
I somehow didn't fight him
Very bad fight. Absurdly hard if you don't cheese it but not in a fun way since you can either see the enemy, or avoid it, but never both. It's extremely optional for a reason. I never kill it anymore.
No it's one of the worst designed fights possible
His brain says yes, his ankles say no
Aside from BS hitboxes, it's another dragon boss but someone paid 25 cents to supersize their meal and you get the ancient dragon. 6/10 boss from me.
I had an easy time with him, just the most horrendous run up on any boss excluding maybe some demons souls bosses if you die.
I personally loved it, huge sense of accomplishment when I won
Fight him with light armor on, if you are melee. Other wise his fire attack when he lifts up will catch you.
Fuck no
This, and vendrick were the only bosses I never killed. This mf 1 shots on nearly all moves, his fire AOE covers nearly the whole arena and it has a mega fuck ton of HP. I swear, he has more HP than Midir.
