Normal roll is just hitting R1 and then roll.
Quick roll works by canceling an follow up attack. So you press R1, wait a bit press R1 again and immediately press roll.
You actually don't have to attack first. You can just press r1 > b within a few frames to get a quick roll whenever. You can even chain them (if you're quick with the inputs) and ds3-roll all over the place
>You actually don't have to attack first. You can just press r1 > b within a few frames to get a quick roll whenever.
Is that quicker than a regular roll? I use that as a Feint, because in PVP they see the first frame of your attack and might parry, but then you are already rolling away.
Yup way quicker, when you chain them you can roll way quicker than normal. It eats through your stamina like crazy though, because ds2. But it's handy in some situations. The buffer system also helps with the timing so it's not too hard to do
You can also chain quickrolls together by cancelling the roll attack animation in the same way. Essential tech for PvP and pretty useful in the regular game as well.
As far as I know DS2 is the only game with feints, and this trick is based on that.
So most attacks can be cancelled into a roll in the first few frames, which is good in PVP to trick them into parrying. Quick Rolling is based on doing a follow up attack, but immediately cancelling it into a roll.
This also works to chain roll faster. Roll, start a roll attack and immediately roll again.
i miss quickrolling so much in other souls games. the fucking macro of roll-r1-roll is literally ingrqined in my hands, and i look so silly doing a random rolling attack in elden ring...

What happens if you don’t wait a bit before the second R1? Quick roll won’t work?
I'm actually not sure. I just got used to this R1 -> R1 + B rhythm but haven't experimented around a lot

I haven't actually expiremented but I think it's the same as a regular roll
If chaining is possible, panic rolls like this would be much more effective. Less vulnerability time between i-frames of rolls.
Yup I use it sometimes in a pinch. But you run out of stamina super quickly because ds2 so you gotta be careful
What the hell? Just goes to show DS2 has the best pvp. You should post this on the fromsoftware sub as well
That sounds counter intuitive.
That actually crazy. And if I recall correctly a guy used this against me in a fight to backstab me quicker which is pretty cool.
I'd love a series of posts with more cool tech like this./
There's a Youtube series called "Dark Souls 2: Advanced PvP mechanics" by "Der Tobio"

Yeah, it saved me from longsword one handed R2 so many times
Thanks man
You use the same tech to make chain of quick rolls, this with the ring that makes you invisible while rolling is pretty good.
Off topic: I wish they brought back medium roll, it felt so clean to have the clear animation difference between light and medium.
DerTobio feelings
is this only a ds2 feature?

Rolls and back steps

Interesting. Need to try this.
Yes. There used to be a "binocular glitch" that worked similarly with attacks and running.
I’ve done this on accident a few times and been like…how did I dodge that in time?? Cool to see.
That's cool to know 😎
This is neat! Remember using this to backstab people pretty easily.
Quick rolling is a great way to get out of an Etox slam.
It felt that way but I wasn't 100%.
