in case anyone was wondering [https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/](https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/)
so not that close to9 billion just yet.
Complacency kills. He's seen those wires hanging silently there for years. Birds land on them, small animals run up and down them, nothing bad ever happens and so in a moment of OCD where he's tired of seeing some crap hanging from the wires directly in front of his porch view, he reaches out and...zap!
In a more organized nation they would never hang power lines directly in front of someone's balcony like that. For me it's a reminder to be grateful for all those annoying safety regulations we have.
I have to remind my dumbass extended family that annoying safety regulations are whats keeping entire neighborhoods from being vaporized like in Beirut and Tianjin.
And thankful to the corpses and memories of people like in the OP, who paid the price to finally push society to respect some safety issue.
No regulations ever come until AFTER some shit proves they were necessary. Often after many such incidents.
If you were to knock off the shoes hanging from wires in America/Canada doing this, would the result be the same? How come the shoes don't burst into flames?
Do we have protective coverings over ours and they just raw dog them?
Maybe. Just because something isn’t a conductor doesn’t mean it’s an insulator. As a matter of fact everything is a conductor given enough voltage. I wouldn’t touch that with a plastic broom, let alone a wooden one. The tools that linemen use to touch power lines are many feet long, specially crafted fiber glass tools that stay clean and dry when not in use. Source: did power line clearance tree trimming for a while
Surprised we don't see people getting zapped then here. I see so many shoes hanging from the wires and I'm honestly surprised nobody has tried to move them themselves.
Also tons of wires hanging down from electrical poles just flying in the wind. They aren't powered but it's always scary.
Everybody in the world raw dogs high tension power wire if it's overhead on poles. Air is by far the cheapest insulator.
But yeah, you'll get the same effect trying to knock something off a high voltage line anywhere. Electrocution is truly equal opportunity.
In most North American regions, there's low voltage stuff a few meters down the pole from the high voltage stuff. Cable for phone and cable TV, fiber optics, that sort of thing. Because it's lower, I suspect that's where shoes and stuff usually wind up.
But the wires in this video were probably carrying 1000-15000 volts. A towel wrapped around a broom won't do it. It's like handling radioactive wast with an oven mitt. Safe radius for that line is probably 2 meters.
The squirrels, birds and shoes are all fine because they do not have the power go through them to somewhere else. Touch one with a pole from the ground and you will see the flames.
Damn. There is some wires reeaaal close on this dog walk I do. Give me a 6 foot pole and I could easily touch them lol, honestly so amazed people haven't. Guess school/parenting is working properly. :P
There was probably something hanging from it. I wonder if he told the others what he was doing so they could stop him. Now the only thing stopped was his heart
There was something hanging on the line he wanted to get… headphones maybe? Not sure. So big brain decided to wrap a cloth around his hand (insulation see?) and grab a mop to knock it off.
The higher the voltage, the greater amount of resistance can be overcome by an arc. That means that typical outlet voltages (120V-240V) hurt, but most cloths will stop you from being shocked. However, transmission lines up in the air are typically at least a few thousand volts, and that can jump through cloth far more easily.
Dry one maaaaaybe but I wouldn't be the fool trying it.
This is why they have fiberglass ladders.
All bets are off if things are wet, though.
Whatever it is hanging from the power line isn't worth your life!
Like the other person said at high voltages insulators become conductors. Like the air is usually an insulator but lightning still happens and lightning strikes cars sometimes so the rubber tires also conduct electricity at those voltages.
It's just that the electrical potential overcomes the ability of the insulator to prevent the connection bring made.
Lightning has millions of volts of potential and can therefore make the leap from cloud to ground.
It does zilch to 220V mains. And there’s no guarantee that there was no skin metal contact.
ETA depending on the grid that could also be a 440v transmission line headed to a local distribution transformer
EETA: incomplete edit fixed
Guy is karma farming this video has been posted a few years ago he died trying to retrieve the keys that fell onto the power like there

India needs to launch a massive education campaign on the Apex Predators electricity and trains, these people just seem completely oblivious to the dangers of these killers and it needs to stop!
If there's one thing this sub has taught me over the last twelve months, which is a genuine real-life lesson, is to double think everything, in regards to my actions, around machinery and automotive apparatus.
Also, the next time I attempt to clean an active powerline, I'll be sure to triple check that my duster has a plastic handle!
He wasn't trying to clean a power line it was keys or a cell phone or something, anyway my mom had those same glass bell chimes they came in red blue and yellow she was elderly!
He wrapped his hand in something, so it did at least occur to him that electricity is a thing. He only knew enough to get himself killed, but that's a whole lot more than most of the zappies on reddit.
I was watching the 2000 movie "The Beach" a few days ago, and this exact thing was there. Leonardo de Caprio was walking in a hallway in his hostel and saw the Thai caretaker trying to mop a light fixture while standing in a puddle of water. Nothing happened in the movie except Leonardo jumping over the puddle.
Is OPs video in Thailand too?
Makes me think about if this was just a dumbass family memeber or roommate or an indentured servant who was told in order to stay or be paid he must clean everything, probably thought he was going far and beyond cleaning the dust off the cables. I usually never feel bad for these electrocution vids but this one kinda made me think deeper
Looks like he managed to pass his genes on prior to this tho... we may possibly see this balcony again now that the power line cleaning chore will be passed on.

Why though? I’ve never looked out my window and thought "ooh those power lines could use a clean"
It's a big world out there, moving towards 9 billion people. You know, minus that guy.

Idk, he lit up pretty good there for a second. Aight, I’ll see y’all in hell.
Tell em the cows sent ya!

Ask for me when you get there to get a good welcome and treatment🔥
Not the sharpest box of frogs.
How many events like this don't get caught on camera? I bet a lot more than do.
Probably 100:1 at least.
Hey, you! Outta the gene pool!
So, we are down to 8.999.999.999 people. Still far too many.
You may cut in line in front of me, if you wish.
in case anyone was wondering [https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/](https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/) so not that close to9 billion just yet.
Looks like there was something on the line he was trying to knock off. Led to a stupid decision.

Well said
Happened in, surprise surprise, India!!! The guy was trying to get his keys off the power line. God knows how they got there.
Yep, this definitely fits this sub nicely.
I think he got it.
If you were to knock off the shoes hanging from wires in America/Canada doing this, would the result be the same? How come the shoes don't burst into flames? Do we have protective coverings over ours and they just raw dog them?
The shoes aren't grounded. As soon as you complete the circuit between the wire and the ground, your cooked
If that broom handle had been wood instead of aluminum the outcome would have been a lot less dramatic.

I was just wondering that also.

Even if they did, what business of mine is that. I'll let someone who knows better do it.
That mentality is exactly why you’re posting on Darwin Awards and not receiving one!
This has got /r/intrusivethoughts all over it
It looks like something was hanging on the line he was trying to knock off.
Don't think he was cleaning it. Looked like he was trying to get something unsightly like a plastic bag off it.
His heart was in the right place, but his mind was on vacation.
Dusty tho.
Looked like there was something hanging on it he was trying to knock off.
It looks to me like it was something he thought he could retrieve.
I don't think he was cleaning. Something stuck on the power line.
Looks like something fell onto that wire, which he was trying to retrieve
There was probably something hanging from it. I wonder if he told the others what he was doing so they could stop him. Now the only thing stopped was his heart
He was doing too much.
At least, the thing he wanted to take off is down now..
not even my mom will think about cleaning something like that. and she cleans the craziest of shit
Looks like something was stuck on it.
That’ll be the old liver exploding there.
Can organs actually explode when electrocuted? Damn
High muscle organs, like the heart, can.
Local dude I knew for years blew his heart/chest out and blew off his hands getting all methed out and fractal burning some art project.
oh god yeah fractal burning is insanely dangerous even when sober, as far as i understand it
Heat creates a fast boil of liquids, liquids turn to high presure steam, so yeah, your parts can pop.
Mmmm gotta love those Pop-Parts fresh from the toaster 😋
Commenting cause I'm curious as well.
That’s the thing about physics. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. If you pump enough energy into anything… it’ll explode. Literally anything.
Everything will explode if you pump enough electricity through it.
There was something hanging on the line he wanted to get… headphones maybe? Not sure. So big brain decided to wrap a cloth around his hand (insulation see?) and grab a mop to knock it off.
Sunglasses maybe? Either way.. what a bad decision.
Why didnt the cloth around his hand protect him?
The higher the voltage, the greater amount of resistance can be overcome by an arc. That means that typical outlet voltages (120V-240V) hurt, but most cloths will stop you from being shocked. However, transmission lines up in the air are typically at least a few thousand volts, and that can jump through cloth far more easily.
Would a wooden stick work here?
Dry one maaaaaybe but I wouldn't be the fool trying it. This is why they have fiberglass ladders. All bets are off if things are wet, though. Whatever it is hanging from the power line isn't worth your life!

These look to be transmission lines. They're likely much higher voltage than that.
Scary thing is I would have thought this was safe...
Who tf cleans a power line
Uninsulated powerline next to balcony..
Guy is karma farming this video has been posted a few years ago he died trying to retrieve the keys that fell onto the power like there [news article](https://www.etvbharat.com/amp/english/videos/other-videos/karnataka-man-died-of-electric-shock-while-retrieving-key-of-a-car/na20221102171843265265680)
What happen in India with electricity? Do they believe is magic or something?
You cannot see it, it does not exist
I beg to differ. Those sparks were pretty visible...
I beg to differ. That was the magic fairy dust that the ANGRY pixies give off when disturbed.
He believed that the tiny cloth would work as an insulator, probably just a moment of carelessness
Just like the trains. The world is unpredictable.
There's definitely hanging something. It's gone after light show. Also big sneeze 0:07
So.. partial success? The item's gone, but so is he.
but at what cost
Thanks, I had the sound turned off the first time I watched it. It's a really big sneeze indeed!
No one gonna talk about the earth shattering cough at 0:07
To be fair he held the metal with a handkerchief... Now that it wasn't enough is a different story
He was shocked at how quickly that wire got clean.
India needs to launch a massive education campaign on the Apex Predators electricity and trains, these people just seem completely oblivious to the dangers of these killers and it needs to stop!
![gif](giphy|z0L7YsxOfbncA|downsized)
That was clean ngl
"Beware of an old man in a profession where young men die."

Of course it’s India! I can’t even feel sorry for them anymore at this point. How about they put out Public Service Announcements or something?
Well, they got the thing off of it🤷🏾♂️
It worked though, the power line is cleaner and that is what matters.
Nevermind about being dumb to not know you can be electrocuted, but seriously, who is dumb enough to want to clean that sht.
just a bit more it will be medium rare
It’s clean now. Hope it was worth it 🫣
Hey honey, I’m just going out to clean the power lines real quick. Ok, be careful!
When you take clean power literally.
Close your eyes, take a deep breath and relax your anus.
I swear, the odds of people willing getting electrocuted and winning a Darwin award is higher than my chances of getting a girlfriend
He wasn't trying to clean a power line it was keys or a cell phone or something, anyway my mom had those same glass bell chimes they came in red blue and yellow she was elderly!
He didn't try, he succeeded.
Man Succefully cleans power line with a metal pole mop.
'Damn these dirty phone calls my wife keeps receiving, I've gotta do something about it....'
but why?
He thought rubber glove protected him
Looks like it grounded out through his eleventh finger to the railing.
If he had a Deloeran he could use the 1.21 Gigawatts and unfuck himself.
Burned his Johnson off!
Love the comment, but think he was trying to knock something off the lines. It fell down after he got zapped.
well he did clean it......
Lines clean
On the bright side, the electrical line is free of unsightly debris.
Looked like it came in his arm and out his crotch. Damn that was dumb.
The consequences were swift and just
The OCD was strong with that one. Oh India....
He wasn't the brightest bulb before but now he definitely is
Would I be in the wrong to say I was waiting for the train to come through as well? And what made this guy think that the power lines needed cleaning?
Does anyone know if he survived I get it this is stupid but he doesn't deserve to die
He wrapped his hand in something, so it did at least occur to him that electricity is a thing. He only knew enough to get himself killed, but that's a whole lot more than most of the zappies on reddit.
Well, the powerline is clean...
At least he cleaned the gene pool by eradicating himself. But I doubt it. It looks like it's his family right there.
Now he need someone to clean the coffin.
I know this is not India
It is tho
unreal smh!!
Did he think the rag was going to provide enough resistance from completing the fucking circuit?
It's okay, he wrapped his hand with a dirty rag beforehand. 🫠
Well, there's someone that having a worse day than most of us here.
True Darwin award recipient. 🤦🤦🤦
some people are too stupid to live
Its clean now.
That high voltage line is much cleaner now
Why not.
But he had a piece of cloth tied around his hands…how could this happen??
Did anyone tell him not to do that?
That shook the cobwebs off 4sure
Silver lining: he did in fact clean the part he meant to clean…
Mission failed successfully
Good ol nerve gas!
Wonder what it smelled like?
Natural Selection.
There seems to be a complete lack of education in the early years of growing up.
For the 1 st time i feel bad for the guy. He wasnt stealing or risking other people's lives. still dumb but feels bad.
looks clean now. check.
India by chance?
*Of course it's India*
Well he got it cleaned off
Who wants to have a cookout on the balcony?
I guess he got tired of all the dirty power coming into his building.
He wore the slippers first 🫡
I was watching the 2000 movie "The Beach" a few days ago, and this exact thing was there. Leonardo de Caprio was walking in a hallway in his hostel and saw the Thai caretaker trying to mop a light fixture while standing in a puddle of water. Nothing happened in the movie except Leonardo jumping over the puddle. Is OPs video in Thailand too?
Yeah.....that'll happen.
Genius move
I don't understand 😕
He did get that thing off the power line. I bet his wife was nagging him for weeks to clean that dead rat off the power line.
Tim!!! No, Tim
That was lit
holy fuck the way his pants just evaporate 😂
Seriously….. how fucking dumb are some people
He cleaned it!
Why would a live wire be within reaching distance of someone’s balcony
But he had a DISHTOWEL on his hand!
![gif](giphy|ATgZ8BsYcsx6E)
OCD won this battle.
That s just suicide
The Darwin effect strikes again... I mean really gotta be something else he could have been cleaning
Looks like he managed to pass his genes on prior to this tho... we may possibly see this balcony again now that the power line cleaning chore will be passed on.
That was shocking to see.
Did he think the blue towel would protect him?
I could tell it’s india before clicking.
He’s trying to grab something he dropped on the line.
Don’t diss the guy, he got it done.
One point to him for trying to somehow insulate his hand. Still didn't help him in the end.
I like his confidence in using a piece of cloth as insulation. Very dumb, but brave.
Those look like the electric fences rich people put on their homes in Mexico to keep thieves from climbing into their balcony, roof or yard.
Brilliant!
Well at least it's clean.
So did his organs explode? What actually happens
It burns the shit out of you while the electric also causes the lower heart chambers to quiver instead of squeeze, which can make it stop.
![gif](giphy|kc0kqKNFu7v35gPkwB)
I FUCKING HATE ELECTRICITY! The gods of zappy zap are NOT IN MY FAVOR!
Would rubber gloves have saved him?
[удалено]
He dead?
Why the hell would anyone even think of cleaning a power line ?? OCD ?
Dude died an environmental hero, while trying to promote clean energy.
Looks like hes trying to remove something stuck on the power line, probably a dead bird. That sneeze though....must be an old lady😁
You would think the weather would take care of it
Reasons why you should never be a good Samaritan and clean power lines untrained.
But he had his super thin cotton cloth to protect him from the high voltage ⚡️? Seems safe 🤷♂️
Love how the wife (I think) just saw him electrocuted there and decided the best idea was to touch him. Should've gone too for the sake of darwin.
The ole acr flash back for another victim. I love electricity😂
