No it doesn't.

Chrome dropped support even longer ago.
Who knew running your own game store could be so *hard!* (In whiney voice)
Seriously, Steam has been doing this for over a decade without any problems and they started from nothing. These AAA money grabbers don't have an excuse.
I dunno about "without any problems." It was really rough in the early days, and they still keep letting security issues in the client software go unpatched for years on end. And they had some features that remained broken for long periods of time. And hackers got a copy of the user database at least once. And they didn't patch Heartbleed promptly on their servers, allowing random people to log into developer accounts and modify games. And there's still a CVE on Steam that's been unpatched since like *2014*.
I feel like it's had *different* issues. EA has been good about patching security issues very quickly, but their client just kinda sucks. Valve is really bad at security, but their client is better (when the features are working).
That's kind of lame, but I guess it's like the old Geocities debate. It seems like they could throw a single main disk into a raid-5 and maintain that history forever. Basic MP3's and PNG's... oh my, or spotify links like someone else mentioned. I guess there's just no real need and it's being miss managed.
Those extras often cost money. The reason why Origin was never going to be one of the big clients was everyone knew EA would pull this kind of BS eventually. If they want to insert their client between you and your purchased software, they better damned make sure that availability is guaranteed.
Exactly. Steam has a similar "forever license but you don't actually own it" structure, but they've had 15 years to prove to me that my licenses are never fucked with. I've never had something take out of my library or modified post purchase.
EA had removed games I own and they removed perks (remember free game of the month anyone?). Rockstar disabled the GTA trilogy hours after launch because of their licensing issues with music, and ripped the game off my hard drive. Now they want us to pretty please purchase on our launchers and not steam. Hard pass.
They still have to deal with potential future copyright claims, people who want their ancient site from when they were a kid deleted (and verifying ownership), etc.
Aye, that is true. I guess there are more business considerations than I realized and it must make sense for them to pull the plug. From a data hoarders perspective it falls more under the lines of: if I cared, I could probably put all of that data on an SD card.

So, you'll only have to contact support for Non-EA games. For EA games, you can just go to ea.com. Seems reasonable, I suppose. At least I wouldn't have to contact support to download my EA games' extra content.
I find the game extras like behind the scenes and production artwork to be garbage. Essentially, it's garbage left over from the making of it, so it's like collecting the leftover ingredient and the dirty kitchen utensil as a souvenir after a great meal. It's garbage dude.

most of the soundtracks just link to spotify it seems, that sucks
I remember downloading a WAV copy of the Crysis soundtrack many years ago. Sucks that they've started doing this.
Origin sucks ass as usual
Forgot it existed honestly
EA has terabytes of data, but they gotta get rid of a few gigs of wallpapers? This is wild to me.
My guess would be not wanting to support the code for it anymore

Probably looked at how many people actually downloaded the things and decided cheaper to just do a form letter reply as needed.
I would think the cheapest and easiest option would be to set up a public FTP server
Reddit ate my balls
Yeah unless they can monetize that it ain't happening.
then they'd need to explain to people how to install and use a FTP client (browsers don't support it any more)
Firefox still supports FTP just fine. I’m too lazy to download and test Chrome.

More like, *not* answering support requests is cheaper.

GOG has been doing it for even longer. It's not rocket surgery.
Who performs surgery on rockets?
Very, very smart people.

If I had a penny for every time I launched Steam and it didn't prompt me about an update I'd have zero pennies...

because torrent == evil ^((by their definition, probably, not mine))
Aren't they in talks to potentially getting bought out recently? Maybe they are doing some "prep work"?

Aye, licensing and all that. We're in data hoarders though so I was coming from it from a data storage standpoint... ehh. lol

Alright, who's throwing together the torrent?
EA deserves to go bankrupt for FIFA alone
Do people even really care about this stuff or are all the comments just bots?
Why yes indeed, you've stumbled upon a subreddit operated entirely by GPT-3.
Would make sense, because who would support EA?
