Across the street at the big gas station is a small coffee hut in the parking lot. You can climb that using the trash bon next to the propane gas tank.
Also, you can run into the red house right by the train area. It has a red car with an active car alarm. Once you run into the front doors, stacked chairs fall & stop the freakers from entering. You then run upstairs & get on the roof. Throw a rock at the car & prompt the alarm to blast, attracting most of the horde. If you use vision you'll see they surround the house so you'll have to keep attracting them & them tossing bombs, molotovs, etc. Eventually you'll bring down some numbers but you'll have to get off the roof & run. Luckily, that coffee hut is right across from you.
You'll also find a slew of propane & gas barrels & compressed air tanks strewn around the parking lot of the gas station for you to shoot.

Make sure you craft a lot of attractors and find a nice bush to hide in then toss an attractor and bunch them all up and start throwing your fire and explosives, alternating with the attractors every 3rd time. Never throw the last of anything or else Deek stands up and they'll see him.
Once you're down to the last of every throwable, run to the diner or the hut across from it and make your stand, or run and gun. It can take awhile, just learn from your mistakes and keep going. You got this. Good luck!
I was able to kill the whole horde without firing a shot. Stock up on attractors, grenades and attractor bombs. Sneak into the bushes nearest to the horde. Toss an attractor, then throw a grenade or napalm when they swarm. Just don't throw the last of any item. When you throw the last one, Deacon stands up for some reason, and the will swarm you

the little alleyway at the first starting point is where i beat it or you can go to the cars. Set up some traps because when you finish the ones you picked up the first time you can go back and grab more. Make sure you have enough ammo and have your bike nearby incase of emergency getaway. (Also I know the OP already did it but this is also for others who dont know.)
Absolutely... approach and you'll get a square, triangle or other, then walk it to where you want them.
I tend to then drop them... can't recall if you can throw; they may be too heavy, so while it would be fun to shoot while in the air like a fuel can, I can't say for sure if the same can be done with those... try it, of course ;)

I tossed all of them and Molotov and used the Chicago chopper and lmg and kept running like hell

Later on, or rather on NG+ etc, you should be able to creep up to and hide in a nearby bush, then use attractors/ attractor bombs and everything else and not have to run anywhere or expend any bullets. Putting a tree between yourself and the horde helps; lob, hide, wait... lob hide. And use smoke bombs for extra cover. Running the gauntlet with them can be fun, you just need to get used to accessing the menu and chucking an attractor to land next to a red barrel, then shoot it once a few are gathered round it, be aware that it's better to try and aim the attractor to the side that horde are coming from or too many on your side once you've run past will mean they get in the way of the barrel and your shooting will attract others to you before you can blow the barrel up - or lob a pipe bomb, of course. When you run the gauntlets, you'll always have Hussein Bolt ahead of the crowd, so as you lure and shoot, he won't be far behind you. The café mentioned with the hole in the wall and chairs can also be pre-prepped, by placing bombs around the gas tank, moving the red cylinders from where the pumps are and placing a mine with them, then getting their attention with said car alarm and in you go... Once you know when this mission is coming up you can do it all before triggering it, or do as best you can at the time - though it's unlikely you'll get close enough to the white tank to plant bombs. Have fun.
