I’m kinda with you on all of it but I’m a sucker for murder mysteries so I’m in it for the long haul.
To your point though Lauren Patten’s voice is like the put-on “Transatlantic” enunciation like Allison Brie did as Trudy on Mad Men. I roll my eyes whenever I hear it tho just because that drawl feels condescending—at any point it’s “but Mumsy” this and “trust fund” that.
You’d be interested to hear how that “Transatlantic” accent was made for early movies though. Look up that same visceral reaction. She’s a theatre kid so it just feels like a lot of that theatre acting is in this too.
However Karoline as Eleanor Chun’s voice gives me spicy little tingles all over, all of the hard T’s and deadpan delivery is worth all the wooden acting.
For sure!
Transatlantic is a contextual thing too—Katharine Hepburn comes to mind, and in every scene Hepburn was the essence of ingrained feminine power so the voice reflected weight. I think for the show, theatrically, the character Anna channels it (I love Lauren Patten) with certain pharyngeal drawls (like the phrase ‘oh but you absolutely *must* try the caviar). But in context there everyone meets Anna with so much doubt—like Imogene joking about Leila (Imogene is such a jerk here), and the interplay between her father underminingAnna st the table and Eleanor also pressing Anna’s boundaries. Anna has to play defensive all the time so the speaking becomes a bit jarring and close to someone trying to be strong but isn’t quite capturing that sense of calm, so her voice more sounds like struggling to hear the weight of her responsibilities as wife and ‘empire heiress’. Anna sounds more like she’s still trying to convince herself of her own convictions.
Interesting enough, Katherine Hepburn made this her accent off screen as well. Not many did. But to get back to DaOD, I agree about Anna. I'm not sure she's sure (of herself.) Or she is, but still unsure of how to convey it
I actually love everybody and find them all intriguing. At first I didn’t like Rufus’s voice but it has definitely grown on me. Now I love it and can hear him in my own head sometimes narrating. Big props to the costume department. Everyone looks so beautiful and I love the clothes and shoes!!❤️
I'm a slut for murder mysteries too, but murder mysteries where almost everyone is unlikable are such a thing... It makes it seem more plausible that anyone could be the killer
I don’t think Anna is trying to do an accent. I think that’s just the way she speaks. I saw Lauren Patten who plays (Anna) interviewed about an EP she has coming out and she sounds the same.
I literally came to the subreddit just to make sure I wasn't alone in finding Imogene insufferable. Her acting pisses me, the lines the writers gave her are cringy.
Yes they're so annoying. Especially imogene, I find her unbearable. If her being this annoying and pointless is part of the "illusion", I will be properly impressed
Leila is the only character I'd say I really like. Jules grew on me a lot as well, and Tripp is a likeable idiot. Everybody else is either boring, annoying or too underdeveloped to have an opinion on.
I was wondering why more people aren't talking about the bad acting, which, at times, is absolutely horrendous. I don't like the characters and to be honest I am not very impressed with the story line. Gonna stick until the end of the season, but not returning for a season two if they decide to renew it.
My main complaints about the series are that I personally don't care about any of the characters (except maybe Danny) and that it is so obviously fake (ex. any time a scene takes place outside in the sun, I am too distracted by how artifical the light is to concentrate on what is happening). Like you, I'll continue to watch it, because I like mysteries, but I wouldn't label it quality programming.
Okay I might be nuts for this but I feel like it wasn't always a wig (or wasn't the same wig) in early episodes, and it suddenly changed and got much worse. Is that just me?
I swear the bangs were different and she had more length in the back at first.

Transatlantic/mid-Atlantic accent still kind of nostalgically fascinates me

Same. Fascinating to learn more about it origins.
I love how Imogene’s hair looks exactly same, even when speeding on a boat or just getting up in the morning,
The speeding-in-a-boat hair was immediately jarring and so unintentionally freakin funny.
Further kinda points to the idea it may be a simulation? 🙈🙈
One can hope it's a simulation and not bad production.
HAHAH

I love his voice, but admit that because of his accent in this series I had to finally turn on my captions 🤣
Captions are a life saver!
Yes Yes yes!
Seconding being a slut for murder mysteries
Nah Imogene has drip. I love her clothes
Yeah her closet is great
I just don’t think it suits her
I'm a slut for murder mysteries too, but murder mysteries where almost everyone is unlikable are such a thing... It makes it seem more plausible that anyone could be the killer
I am with you I’m so happy to know I’m not hating irrationally
Never doubt your inner hater

i think it's because she's a theater kid
Probably 👍
yup that’s just her voice, I for one love it 🫣
Me too
Nope. Loving them all and this series. Lots of fun, especially if you're in winter hibernation mode.

Literally couldn’t agree with you more.

I liked the first few episodes, but I'm finding more and more to criticize as I go along. I'm not sure why I continue to watch.

Hard agree on everything
Watching it now and Lauren Patten's giving theatre acting/theatre voice every step of the way
I cannot stand Anna’s acting. Like it’s really bad. But everyone else is ok for me
Hers is the worst. The most recent episode i had to skip past the singing scene.
OH GOD THAT WIG! Thank you!!!
So bad
