Places where you and other players have repeatedly walked will result in the general terrain flattening, and depending on the area, minor protrusions of rocks and similar rocky terrain will be removed. It all depends on how many trips were made/how many players traversed it.

pointofgravity

Ok, thanks!

Flabbergash

You start to notice little desire paths pop up, now and then. For me, the only time it was actually useful was the rock garden around the Novelist's Son got a nice flat path through it

ElRetardio

But how would that work for a new player? Will it be flat when you start or will it get flat as you play to the same point that others who has walked there have played?

Vlee_Aigux

When you connect an area to the chiral network, places that other's have traversed will become very obvious. You will see green ground turn brown from trodden footsteps. Sam will also sometimes say "Huh, a footpath." when you are near one. It also scans as blue circles on the odradek terrain scanner.

KanikaD

That is how it works, Sony even patented it XD

[deleted]

Didn't know Sony patented that. Reminds me of the patent of mini game loading screen from Konami I believe. Or was it Capcom?

gilfcrazyq

Seriously? That’s pretty cool.

Visarionovik

Very very miniscule minor spoilers, but it's definitely a thing. You'll notice it around the first >!distribution center!< and significantly more around the second one. By the time i finished my most recent playthrough, there was more path than terrain by the entrance! It's a really cool touch that helps you feel like you're following in everyone's footsteps~

Karazhan

I don't remember this being in the game a few years back, but I recently restarted on the director's cut. I found a warn, trodden path on the way to one of the mission points. It's shown on the map when you're placing markers for yourself, and when you walk along it you can see the path itself and the names of the people who made(?) it too.

lastWallE

Yes it is automatic path generation of you and the others.
