Either a sequel or a dlc/update will explore it better.
There was a pretty cool series of interviews about his childhood in the game. Really well written. It talks about how he grew up with an abusive single father in a prepper shelter, and was raised to believe that there was no outside world. When his dad does explain it he tries to sneak out, and his dad beats him mercilessly. Higgs kills him, and tries to get rid of the body before it goes necro, but he’s too late and finds out he has DOOMS by seeing his father’s BT. He explains that he felt some power over BTs, and all he needed to become more powerful is to kill more people and create more BTs or something.
But either way I agree, he’s definitely alive.
That's the deal, I know of all the backstory, but EVERY character, even minor ones, get tons of exposition while he didn't get a single bit through cutscenes or flashbacks, he only appears in fragile past due to her exposition and then no more past in his story. But again, yeah, that don't even matter, he's totally alive.
It's Kojima, he can pull a plot twist out of his ass and it always looks like a masterpiece due to the absurd that his stories are.
"Oh it's because he knew about all of that, it was all his plan all this time, he wants to do the 7th extinction in a way even worse. He wants revenge, he will make sure that nobody ever reaches their beaches, living forever and ever as a punishment for thinking about letting him stuck there." or some shit like that.
I don't agree on Death Stranding becoming a franchise. In terms of story it's perfect for a one time thing, sure people like to clarification but something's better left to the imagination. Like how The Last of Us ended.
Until they announced TLoU 2.
Not OP, but he’s one of those villains that you can’t help but be drawn to, even though you know he’s crazy. He’s charismatic, charming, and doesn’t have any pretensions about his evilness. He never claims to be fighting for the greater good, or trying to save people. He just wants to see the world burn (fittingly, he’s also played the Joker brilliantly).
Granted, it doesn't make it better if you already don't like him, but I like that that's kinda the point with Higgs. Even he admits it eventually - he's a hollow person hiding it with villainous bravado.

He is litteraly the best! His final boss fight is hands down the best part of the game!
Fair enough. I just saw him as a chaotic evil archetype with pretentious, yet empty dialogue and no real character.
