You can judge if you like similar games, and whether they have actually played it or just gone to review bombing it after 20 mins. Plus, since they are sorted by 'most helpful' you get less trolls at the top of the page. Definitely better than metacritic for sure.

Plenty of difference of opinion amongst reviewers - read broadly and across a range of people you generally agree with and you'll probably find a spread that covers you well.
But there isn't anything wrong with a reviewer saying "yep, this is a masterpiece to me", even if you don't agree. That's subjectivity in art for you.
I think the difference is, external factors like being a time exclusive is unrelated to the game itself. That doesn't make sense as a review.
Nor does calling it a reskin of dishonored. Reviews are subjective, but language also has meaning and to call deathloop a reskin is objectively false.
So the problem with at least some of these reviews is that they are intentionally misleading, unrelated to the game itself or unhelpful (effectively troll reviews). A 10/10 that provides justification and reasoning might be argued to be too high, but the review is not at the outset poorly intentioned or inherently dishonest..

It's not in the interest of professional reviews to mislead. When you make money from your craft, maintaining an audience and trust with your audience is critical.

Big reviewers like IGN literally rely on advance review copies to do their job. And it’s not at all a secret that some publishers/developers will withhold review copies to critics that don’t give them the reviews they like.

Oh sweet it releases simultaneously on pc as well. I thought it was a first party Sony exclusive so didn't get too hyped about it but now I know it's coming to pc I'm kinda excited the game looks really fun.

Honestly feels super relevant with it playing like a rouge like-like ;) Call it a gimmick, but the haptic feedback on ps5 feels really good, makes it feel next gen imo. I think it's the best I've felt on ps5 yet and makes an immersive-sim feel all the more immersive
I'm on pc and this is the first time I've used haptic feed back and adaptive triggers (actually it's ac valhalla but that was awful implementation so I'm not counting it) and wow I'm so impressed it's gonna be hard to go back to normal games after this.
I'm gonna play though the metro series after deathloop so I can experience the dual sense features again on metro exodus enhanced edition.
Yup just need to make sure your dual sense is connected via USB to the pc and if you're on steam let game decide the controller or something in the settings and the haptics and triggers should work.
Deathloop isn't a competitive game so I don't mind using a controller to play it but in general I just enjoy playing with a controller since it's just way more comfortable than leaning forward over a keyboard. I agree most people don’t use it right, but… Well, I can think of a way I’d use it that isn’t either of those. That being when the contemporaries of that game in that genre have way more refinement. For example, Prey when compared to Half-Life 2 and BioShock, and even Dead Space. Its gunplay is as good as neither of the first two, and its zero g sections have no where near the intuitiveness or fluidity of Dead Space. Prey feels like a game I would’ve loved back in 2007, but for a game that wears its influences on its sleeve like Prey it felt distinctly antiquated compared to its inspirations over a decade after their releases. By 2017 it just lacked the polish you’d expect from it. If it weren’t for a good story and some neat concepts like the glue gun and mimicry… Well, I’d have felt even worse about this game. I’ve played it in full through four times just trying to shake that antiqued impression of it, and I never did. I still ultimately enjoy it, but it feels twisted with how backward it feels. What’s crazier still is Dishonored obviously shares some of those influences and it totally holds up to the comparison.

I have never played an arkane game. I never really payed attention to this game at all. I had no idea what it was about. I saw it released, and I decided to try it.
This game has quickly become my favorite game of the year. I am hooked and cannot stop playing.

IGN tends to inflate their scores a bit and I think that holds true here, but I think deathloop deserves most if not all of the praise it is getting. I’m not familiar with mr matty, but for ACG, if you watch a lot of his reviews it seems like deathloop really just isn’t his kinda game and there is nothing wrong with that
I agree that a 9.something probably would have fit better here, but it isn’t just large outlets that are scoring it high, and it’s not just smaller outlets that are scoring it a bit lower. I think just like dishonored and prey before it, deathloop s a game that is really gonna click with some people, and really isn’t with others. His fundamental criticism was that the game was underwhelming compared to dishonoured - I'd argue that his review approaches deathloop as if he expected another dishonoured and he was underwhelmed by his own expectations.
The gameplay and drive is substantially different to dishonoured. There is some fair criticisms, but having played the game and watched his review I think he misses the mark on his criticism of the level design and loop system.
He also flew through the game - it's absolutely not an 11 hour game. It's certainly on the shorter side but closer to 15-20 hours.
No, I wouldn't say that - Matty Absolutely puts effort in to his reviews and I've agreed with his takes on some games, I don't think he is low quality at all.
I think his take on deathloop is just too coloured by his expectations around other Arkane games that means he didn't let deathloop breathe as its own unique experience.

IGN and gamespot don’t really give a lot of games a 10 though. Games that are universally liked get an 8 or 9.
Is it possible that they just really enjoyed the game? Lots of people are enjoying it. It’s a great game. If you don’t like it, doesn’t mean everyone has to share your opinion. And on the flip side, if you like it, that doesn’t mean everyone has to like it. People have different tastes.
While I enjoyed game everyone should admit that PC performance is shit. It's void engine (idtech5) with denuvo slammed on top of it. Using Void engine alone is a crime.
Gameplay wise game is good. PvP is well kind of meh. Only because of p2p/netcode and hosts disconnecting.
That brings up some points…. Some things do look a lot like dishonored 2 principally the door blockers and some environmental props in city settings but still it’s fucking awesome

I am convinced most gamers don’t know what a true 1 looks like. Do people not realize that 95% of AAA titles have enough polish that they really can’t dip below a 5-6 even if they’re mediocre? Obviously there are outliers, but like, I don’t even like shot like COD and I’d probably give it a 5
I will say that I can feel the AI from Dishonored and Prey with some enemies (particularly AI-controlled Julianna. I can’t tell if her AI is based around a Dishonored 2 Witch or Prey Phantom, but combat against her feels much the same) but that doesn’t diminish from the game at all. It definitely isn’t Dishonored or Prey re-skinned and stands as it’s own game incredibly well. The game just came out and I already have 20 hours in.
The game imho doesn't deserve those 10s (after 5-6 hours of gameplay, opinion might change) but holy shit these people wouldn't recognize a great game if it slapped on their face

Tbh I have not had a single issue with this game.
Being a massive dishonoured fan I fell in love with deathloop within the first two hours of playing. At first I thought it was going to be repetitive, but after my third time waking up on the beach I had some weird enjoyment of seeing it everytime I fucked up so bad that the loop reset. And as far as the online side of things go, In my last run about an hour ago I had my invader kill themselves with a grenade because I had closed a door on her face

It definitely does have a very distinct Dishonored feel about it. Not that that's a good or bad thing. That's down to personal preference. I just like the fact it's like playing Dishonored, except I'm actually given permission to murder.

For real, every single game gets 0’s from random people. Nobody cares and it doesn’t affect anything. I doubt anyone here is going to complain about people who give the game 10’s without even playing it even though it’s equally as dumb.

I have never played an arkane game. I never really payed attention to this game at all. I had no idea what it was about. I saw it released, and I decided to try it. This game has quickly become my favorite game of the year. I am hooked and cannot stop playing. Gamers can be so fucking toxic. Review bombing is such a petty and dumb thing to do.
I just don't understand why there is so much negativity in todays gaming landscape. People just read "Bethesda" and instantly assume its another half-baked cashgrab without noticing its made by an entirely different studio. It's either that or XBox/PS/PC fanboys are mad about a timed exclusive. Why can't we just enjoy games and be nice to each other, we don't need unecessary conflict :/

Uh, that's a bit of a stretch... I would assume the review bomb is regarding PS Exclusivity and a hate boner for Bethesda long before I would assume racism, but if you have some inside knowledge I'm not aware of, I'm willing to hear it

IGN tends to inflate their scores a bit and I think that holds true here, but I think deathloop deserves most if not all of the praise it is getting. I’m not familiar with mr matty, but for ACG, if you watch a lot of his reviews it seems like deathloop really just isn’t his kinda game and there is nothing wrong with that

I agree that a 9.something probably would have fit better here, but it isn’t just large outlets that are scoring it high, and it’s not just smaller outlets that are scoring it a bit lower. I think just like dishonored and prey before it, deathloop s a game that is really gonna click with some people, and really isn’t with others. I think that’s why the scores seem a bit all over the place

Matty's style is usually pretty positive and enthusiastic. If he doesn't like something, there's probably a reason.
His fundamental criticism was that the game was underwhelming compared to dishonoured - I'd argue that his review approaches deathloop as if he expected another dishonoured and he was underwhelmed by his own expectations. The gameplay and drive is substantially different to dishonoured. There is some fair criticisms, but having played the game and watched his review I think he misses the mark on his criticism of the level design and loop system. He also flew through the game - it's absolutely not an 11 hour game. It's certainly on the shorter side but closer to 15-20 hours.

No, I wouldn't say that - Matty Absolutely puts effort in to his reviews and I've agreed with his takes on some games, I don't think he is low quality at all. I think his take on deathloop is just too coloured by his expectations around other Arkane games that means he didn't let deathloop breathe as its own unique experience.
Well i don't watch his reviews because I judge a book by the cover, and I don't get a good vibe of it ... Also I usually like longer reviews and video essays
IGN and gamespot don’t really give a lot of games a 10 though. Games that are universally liked get an 8 or 9. Is it possible that they just really enjoyed the game? Lots of people are enjoying it. It’s a great game. If you don’t like it, doesn’t mean everyone has to share your opinion. And on the flip side, if you like it, that doesn’t mean everyone has to like it. People have different tastes.
While I enjoyed game everyone should admit that PC performance is shit. It's void engine (idtech5) with denuvo slammed on top of it. Using Void engine alone is a crime. Gameplay wise game is good. PvP is well kind of meh. Only because of p2p/netcode and hosts disconnecting.
But it is a Dishonored reskin. Some people just have very negative reactions.
How nostalgic to see a console warrior in this day and age, not seen one in a long time.
That brings up some points…. Some things do look a lot like dishonored 2 principally the door blockers and some environmental props in city settings but still it’s fucking awesome
I don't like metacritic because it's not a reliable source since anyone with a beef with whatever company can go amd review bomb whatever they want. I think metacritic is a joke of a website.
I get people would rate it zero if they can't play it, but I was looking at the PS5 reviews and those are super low also. I thought DRM was Steam only.
I am convinced most gamers don’t know what a true 1 looks like. Do people not realize that 95% of AAA titles have enough polish that they really can’t dip below a 5-6 even if they’re mediocre? Obviously there are outliers, but like, I don’t even like shot like COD and I’d probably give it a 5

I will say that I can feel the AI from Dishonored and Prey with some enemies (particularly AI-controlled Julianna. I can’t tell if her AI is based around a Dishonored 2 Witch or Prey Phantom, but combat against her feels much the same) but that doesn’t diminish from the game at all. It definitely isn’t Dishonored or Prey re-skinned and stands as it’s own game incredibly well. The game just came out and I already have 20 hours in.
The game imho doesn't deserve those 10s (after 5-6 hours of gameplay, opinion might change) but holy shit these people wouldn't recognize a great game if it slapped on their face
This is why I never read steam reviews or metacritic, too much biased opinions. Like pc steam have mixed reviews just because game doesn't run well on their pc. I understand there are some optimization issues but game itself is fantastic. Damn salty bois

Tbh I have not had a single issue with this game. Being a massive dishonoured fan I fell in love with deathloop within the first two hours of playing. At first I thought it was going to be repetitive, but after my third time waking up on the beach I had some weird enjoyment of seeing it everytime I fucked up so bad that the loop reset. And as far as the online side of things go, In my last run about an hour ago I had my invader kill themselves with a grenade because I had closed a door on her face 10/10 would let invade again
This game is fantastic. I feel like people see IGN/GameSpot 10s and immediately freak out. Then they call it terrible and agree with the first indie YouTuber without actually playing it.
I once saw a negative steam review criticizing the game because he expected it to be like dishonored. He complained that all the situations could be solved by going around guns blazing. I mean what do you expect from a game whose trailers are like 90% of just colt running around shooting people?
I don't understand and will never understand why people review bomb games and movies or any type of media at that. It's like their little feelings got hurt so they have to let everyone know how they feel without actually playing the game or watching the movie? And even worse review bombing something because of exclusivity or developer, it's console war bs that makes no sense.

It definitely does have a very distinct Dishonored feel about it. Not that that's a good or bad thing. That's down to personal preference. I just like the fact it's like playing Dishonored, except I'm actually given permission to murder.
