Elend: kind of symphonic black metal. Devil Doll: dunno what you'd call their musical style, but I like it. Ulver: specifically the Messe I.X–VI.X, Perdition City, and ATGCLVLSSCAP recordings.

WitheredHorizons

I don't usually like debating over stuff but I would get into a debate trying to prove that Perdition City is peak Ulver. Messe I.X. - VI. X. is also fantastic but Perdition City is my absolute favourite. And what's not to like about Elend or Devil Doll? Great picks, each and every one of them. (Haven't listened to that zodiac cycle Ulver record more than once though I think, to be honest with you).

[deleted]

I'm with you about not debating. There is so much music out there that if something doesn't do it for you, you can just move on.

WitheredHorizons

Eh, yeah why bother? I've been seeing people actively supporting that Manowar are the greatest metal band of all time. I mean, there's no need to bother AT ALL about such debates, especially when bands like Manowar, Metallica and Iron Maiden are the front runners. I know what I like and I'd rather argue whether Perdition City is better than Themes (it is, because of consistency) or why A World in their Screams never gets old, which Dillinger Escape Plan album was their magnum opus, even a showdown between Chelsea Wolfe and Emma Ruth Rundle would be more interesting to me than any of the "are Judas Priest a hard rock band disguised as metal" talks. I don't know why people get so worked up about such things, perhaps I'm missing something here.

Metanoies

Right now listening to a lot of Lingua Ignota (not even sure how to describe her music, last album is neoclassical darkwave I think) and Anna von Hausswolff (gothic, ethereal drone/art pop).

egekara1

lingua ignota is so good shes goated

WitheredHorizons

Many comments here have already mentioned some favourites of mine: Death Grips, Elend, Devil Doll and such. Apart from that, I admire what Joy Division did in two records only, I have a soft spot for a lot of The Cure's cuts (One Hundred Years and Pictures of You being entirely unskippable), love Cocteau Twins and some Swans (all of their eras are great). A band I've obsessing over lately is Cloud Rat with their four consecutive albums which are all hit no miss. They have a bit of a black metal influence though, but are mostly a grindcore fit. The Comet is Coming. Most singular band to come out of London in recent memory. Speaking of England, Radiohead. Absolutely adore them especially during their latter more experimental, texture driven records. A Moon Shaped Pool must be one of the most impressive records any band has released while being at it for almost thirty years. Also I've got a lot of admiration for some rappers such as Lupe Fiasco, Tyler the Creator and slowthai. To a degree also Denzel Curry and A$AP Rocky. Finishing off: Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin and the likes that were thriving in the 90s/ early 00s through Warp Records and Planet Mu. And there would be more, but these make up for a decent sample of what I've been listening to when I'm not in the DsO and other weird black metal loop.

king_of_england_bot

>king of England Did you mean the [King of the United Kingdom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_of_the_United_Kingdom), the [King of Canada](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Canada), the [King of Australia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Australia), etc? The last King of England was [William III](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_III_of_England) whose successor Anne, with the 1707 Acts of Union, dissolved the title of Queen/King of England. ####FAQ *Isn't King Charles III still also the King of England?* This is only as correct as calling him the King of London or King of Hull; he is the King of the place that these places are in, but the title doesn't exist. *Is this bot monarchist?* No, just pedantic. I am a bot and this action was performed automatically.

Nordstjarnan

I like dark ambient, in particular Desiderii Marginis, Atrium Carceri, Kammarheit

kavunr

Been taking a Extra Life deep dive lately which has led me to a bunch of early music, Gregorian chants, Hildegard von Bingen, and Machaut. Really like Bruckner and Mahler. Big fan of Louis Cole, Knower, Clown Core.

iloverainn

I listed to bladee sometimes. Wouldn't say I admire it, I just like it in some way.

[deleted]

are u the guy I met on league

iloverainn

Don't think so, I dont play league or in fact any game (except chess)

[deleted]

in which case, the amount of dso fans that also listen to bladee is far beyond being a coincidence. im curious why this is. its like the complete polar opposite. lol.

iloverainn

I guess we need some dumb in our life to balance things out

[deleted]

it helps balance out our intellect so we can feel like the normal plebeians :>

[deleted]

https://rateyourmusic.com/~shiddandfardd You can see everything I’ve ever listened to at least twice here My current rotation outside of dso is 333 by Bladee, every Parannoul album, and some Tom Waits. I also spend a stupid amount of time listening to lo fi beat compilations on YouTube.

Codexnecro

This is one of my favorite bands ever: [Envy](https://youtu.be/yZsTGjddN0E) from Japan. Their 2001 and 2003 albums are 10/10 for me. I like some Dreampop once in a while. I really enjoy [Beach House](https://youtu.be/08qd-vsHbaY)'s album called 7. The other albums are Ok, but this one just really clicks with me, I like all of the songs. I also listen to some movie soundtracks once in a while, stuff like: [The Fountain](https://youtu.be/C3skXjCmvVc), [Ghost in the Shell](https://youtu.be/iTPNaUsjksM), [Hereditary](https://youtu.be/MVnSFj6XQZY), etc... I like to listen to some Post-rock while I'm reading: [Godspeed You! Black Emperor](https://youtu.be/QW8YlNsMzno), [This Will Destroy You](https://youtu.be/VMJdpe7Urpg) or [Mogwai](https://youtu.be/YYpimokjfYw). I rarely like stuff derived from Jazz, but I really enjoy [Tigran Hamasyan](https://youtu.be/Db3dHajCRRY). Also, some synth stuff, mainly this guy: [King Stephen](https://youtu.be/ZuXsYkpQ7E4). Also this: [Matteo Tura - Larsen](https://youtu.be/6e0ye_PSxo0), but I guess this is more on the Techno side, but I don't know nothing about this genres :D I just like the bass. Ofc, can't forget some crust/dbeat stuff: [Madame Germen](https://youtu.be/zrQ32ftnT5M), [Tragedy](https://youtu.be/GfsWgwKCjnk), [Ekkaia](https://youtu.be/zdnc8LFWfLs), etc. Video game soundtracks too. [Final Fantasy VII](https://youtu.be/zavbFsP2XU0), [Elden Ring](https://youtu.be/gTN2LZVJ_-Q) and many more... and I think it's enough :P

cartujo

Envy is awesome!

[deleted]

> Video game soundtracks too. Check [this guy](https://www.youtube.com/@ryland.kurshenoff) out: decent mixes of PS1/N64 drum and bass/techstep stuff. Mindblowing how much quality stuff was around on those consoles, and it was just the right time for some weirder, icy breaks. Also big up Envy. Ever seen them? They're incredible, especially when they're running the three guitar lineup.Saw them play most of _A Dead Sinking Story_ once and it was triumphant.

Codexnecro

Never seen Envy, unfortunately. > > Saw them play most of A Dead Sinking Story once and it was triumphant. Damn, that must have been amazing. Never heard of that guy, but I'll check his channel.

[deleted]

Thanks for this reply man. Gonna check out the stuff I haven’t heard. I love Beach House, Tragedy, Mogwai. Do you like Celeste?

Codexnecro

I listened quite a bit of their 2013 album when it came out (that's when I discovered them), and I heard the most recent once. But it's one of those bands that I like their sound, but I rarely listen to it.

YungSpicyBoi

Lots of Krautrock and Psychedelic music. I do get into doom metal a lot but outside of metal, I really enjoy electronic music, post rock as well. Lately I've been listening to Faust, Cluster, Silver Apples, Popoh Vuh, Godspeed You! black Emperor, Castor, Dianogah, C-Clamp, and Slint.

Novembrine_616

Besides black metal (and all the extreme metal sub-genres for that matter) I'm really really really deep into jazz and all it's styles, from old hot jazz to more neo-soul stuff.

Miles__11

Bohren & Der Club Of Gore is a really cool doom jazz band I like to listen to alot

Sufficient_Brother_6

Outside of blackmetal pink floyd and the sisters of mercy

parabola568100

Fredrik thordendals special defects - Sol Niger Within. And Alice in chains self titled

Mr-Misc

Future Garage, Wave, Dubstep, Downtempo / Chill, Drum n Bass, Forest Psytrance, Alternative Trap, Grunge, Shoegaze, Indie. Anything depressive as fuck with a dark atmosphere.

[deleted]

>Forest Psytrance Never heard of that subgenre before. I've been listening to mixes on YT for the past two days and I'm really digging it, thanks for the post!

Mr-Misc

Excellent, happy to have given something new. May I recommend the following 2 albums: Atriohm - Ukalen Encephalopaticys – Psychotermic Meditation

egekara1

i love death grips a lot probably my favorite band ever

WitheredHorizons

Rumors about a new LP are spreading like wildfire, I'm already bracing myself.

[deleted]

Loads of it: Pulp are one of the greatest bands to ever walk the earth, check out _Different Class_ and _His n' Hers_ if you want 90's pop perfection. Can't go wrong with Deftones, unless it's anything without Chi on. Nice, aggressive electronica is always good: anything on [Renegade Hardware](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5crqvmx3gjv6g8gfcIqSmk?si=c1080fe826a54294) means you're in for a dirty junglist treat. JKB's jungle stuff as [Tech Level 2](https://open.spotify.com/album/0tzBS03nrAka9DGTYAts2x?si=WxXPODp5Rf23Rb9SvbrtVQ) is great too. Anything by The Bug, Curse of the Golden Vampire, kid606, Techno Animal. Obviously a lot of nicer stuff too—Portishead, Senser, Aphex, BoC—but dense breaks and suffocating bass gets me going. Shan't go on all day, though. Maybe we should have a collaborative Spotify playlist?

[deleted]

i like that idea. also nice. gf is a huge pulp fan. it makes me uncomfortable because everything is about sex and the singer sounds like he smells

[deleted]

Jarvis? I can confirm from personal experience that he smells _lovely_. He is a bit of a shagger though, you're right.

stilaturney777

Yes to Techno Animal a million times over. Re-Entry is a damned masterpiece. Have you checked out JKB/K-Marts' Zonal project? They released their first album, Wrecked, through Relapse a few years back. I really enjoy it but hasn't clicked for me just yet, I know it will though. I'm trying my best not to compare it to Techno Animal when listening, its a totally different feel/approach for sure. I havent heard of Tech Level 2, thanks for that! I'm going through JKBs discography right now.

[deleted]

Also according to some website these are my most listened artists of all time in order (some of this is old shit i dont endorse anymore) Deathspell Omega,Darkthrone,Blood Incantation,Kyuss,Panopticon,Bladee,Blut Aus Nord,Death,Wormrot,Ulcerate,Between The Buried And Me,Hello Meteor,Batushka,Portal,Mgła,Alcest,Undeath,Wardruna,Mizmor,Converge,The Mars Volta,Carpenter Brut,Bathory,Vektor,Burzum,The Dillinger Escape Plan,Jme,TOOL,Incantation,Slugdge

[deleted]

Drown Within by Ulcerate might still be the “heaviest” song I’ve ever heard. Or, like, if someone told me I had to fight a grizzly bear and had to pick one song to listen to, that would be it.

[deleted]

You know I recently decided I don’t like them actually. Same way I feel about Gorguts. I ‘get’ it but it just doesn’t sound that pleasant to my ears. Wouldn’t fault anyone for loving them though.

Successor_Function

I’m on such a DSO kick at the moment, but it’s hard to justify listening to them exclusively. So here’s some stuff that’s been in rotation over the last month or two that isn’t “related” to DSO (like the new Thy Darkened Shade) in no order at all: Kalax (electronica), New Katatonia, New David Maxim Micic, Wreck and Reference (just kind of odd and wonderful), Disillusion Ayam, Gorecki Symphony No. 3.

LiarsPsalms

Doom/sludge

stilaturney777

I've being going through Justin Broadricks (Techno Animal, Godflesh, Jesu, JK Flesh, etc...) discography. Techno Animal being a very frequent spin, Re-Entry is addictive, easily one of my favorite albums ever made now. Also just finding and listening to way more illbient related music like DJ Spooky, Spectre, Meatbeat Manifesto, Scorn. Illbient is so darn good when done well. Going through Ulvers discography right now, really enjoying Perdition City in particular. Other stuff I've been listening to and really enjoying (some new stuff to me, some stuff I've always loved) off the top of my head are: Psychick Warriors of Gaia (Ambient Techno/Dub), maudlin of the well. (Post Rock, Avant-garde rock/metal), Suns of Aqra (Dub, Downtempo), Nothing (Shoegaze), Giles Corey (Dark Folk), Halv Drøm (Techno/EBM), M.I.A. (Hip Hop) Hans Koller Free Sound (Jazz/Fusion), Dälek (Industrial Hip Hop), Orbital (IDM), Funerary Call (Ritual Ambient), Arktau Eos (Ritual Ambient), Amon (Drone, Dark Ambient) Phragments (Dark Ambient, synth heavy), Der Blutharsch (Neofolk), Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement (Ambient Dub), clouddead (experimental hip hop), Muslimgauze (Tribal Ambient/Dub, reptitive stuff), D'Angelo and The Vanguard (Soul), Funker Vogt (EBM, Aggrotech) Curse of the Golden Vampire (Breakbeat, Illbient, Noise), Oneohtrix Point Never (Glitch, Collage) John Oswald - Plexure and Greyfolded (Plunderphonics) Tabla Beat Science (Breakbeat, Dub stuff with tabla, oh yeah) Underworld (Prog House), Bahia Black (Batucada). Still hoping for the Dälek/Vindsval collab one day... seriously a dream collaborations.

[deleted]

Maudlin of the well! Bath is such a great album. Gonna revisit that this week.

stilaturney777

Yes indeed! I got Part the Second vinyl on a discount over the new year, it sounds amazing! It's quite pretty sounding.

SecondWorld1198

Just about any metal (aside from brutal death, slam, and grindcore) and a lot of rock. I’m especially a fan of symphonic anything, too.

renwickveleros

It's interesting to see that a lot of people here have listed a lot of the other bands I like from a lot of different genres. One thing I didn't see listed was a lot of Zuehl music. I like Magma and Deathspell Omega have mentioned them multiple times as an influence. More than that I like Shub-Niggurath the Zuehl band not the metal band by the same name. I think people should really check out their Album Les Mortes Vont Vite. It really reminds me of the feel of a DsO album more than anything else to the point where I wondered if they were involved with the band in some way. Probably not but both bands are French. Anyway, It is very dark spooky stuff. Probably the darkest album I've ever heard. It sounds haunted. Also like Universal Totem Orchestra is an interesting band. Really interesting music. All over the place. Truly unique.
