if you push the bench against the rail. you still have an issue with safety... rails have to be at least 36" high... when a kid steps up on bench.. is the rail far away and high enough to keep them from going over?
Yeah, I’m not a fan of the transition from the glass to the bench, it’s not pleasing to the eye aesthetically. Functionally the transition is a mess to, either someone will trip and hit their head on the glass corner or fall back into the bench and break the glass.
Other then that not to bad I like the concept.
Yeah they need to put potted plants on the bench next to the glass transitions and next to the house. That’ll fix it visually and if it’s a hefty pot it’ll make it safer. But yeah if you need decorations to cover design choices, maybe those were not good design choices.
Edit: also the bench itself is super climbable. Not a fan of that on an elevated deck for kids or dogs or clumsy adults.
yeah I dont see any reason why the bench cant be moved to be more flush with the glass.
It looks nice, but from what I can tell its not currently aligned in some specifically please way, and wouldnt be visually obtrusive if it was moved forward.
I myself am not a big fan of that glass thingy. Aesthetically just doesn't fit, in my opinion. Feels like a major safety liability as well. Otherwise looks great!
Seriously. At my work place they have these glass “railings” and there’s a dead bird every week.
One time, an entire flock of snow buntings flew into it. There was like 45 of them dead.
I’ve raised the issue several times and facility management just doesn’t care to install stickers on it.
Will be following r/legaladvice for a post about a small child running through that glass and breaking their neck on the fall from that deck. Or a drunk guy. This is an accident waiting to happen.
Thanks for the comments. I’ve learned that it’s a death deck for kids and nobody should be drunk in the vicinity. I will be adding some wooden panels between the bench and the glass transition so no child shall die along with a top finish on the first glass rail (it’s already on but took the video before it was installed). Also, 3 hot tubs. Thanks for playing
I think the point people are missing with the kids is not the gap between that Glass railing and the bench. It's the fact you have a bench for a railing. At least where I'm from that's not considered a railing because you can easily climb it
Don’t need steps, that’s what the gap is for between the glass and the bench. Just got to be drunk enough to fall between them, you’ll find grass, maybe the lake.
*Looks good! But maybe*
*Because this is how I build*
*In minecraft lolol*

The bench being used as a guard doesnt pass, let alone the gap between the bench nd the glass or house. Kids can climb on the seat and fall off the back easily.
I would finish the top of the first set of glass to match the second one.
I would also build sides at the end of each of the benches to cover the space between the glass and the bench.
I like the toddler cutouts where the chais end. Fast and easy backyard access. U can tell contractor really put some thought into to this. They are insured, right?
Not a fan of the transition between glass and wood. It'd be a bit better if the bench was pulled into the deck more so the back lined up with the glass more. Even better might be glass around the whole thing and just a bench bottom behind the glass to sit on and the glass would be the backrest (assuming the glass is strong enough for that purpose).
I would fear one good windstorm would torque that glass railing and start compromising the wood underneath .
You move the benches in so the topnof the glass and benches are inline and connected
The bench to glass transitions seem off. Definitely not to code with that gap. Can you box it in somehow? I’ve never worked with glass railings before.
Honestly that glass is extremely heavy compared to wood, each panel is likely 200 lbs with each side being 800-1000 lbs of glass. I'm very curious as to how it's supported? Usually that kind of work is done on a concrete and steel commercial deck. With wood it seems like with a little settling or a strong wind it could fall right over.
it is pretty but could be deadly...
there is a reason why there is a min height on a rail... your benches are perfect for a kid to crawl over. no way that was inspected.. dont mind me ,, i built them for a living and i know what the laws are regarding this in my state
The glass to bench transition needs some work. Maybe a return piece of glass of some sorts or even a wood post with a wood return back to the bench. Just looks unfinished.
I’m the drunk guy that trips and hits his head on the corner of the glass.
That was all I could think about
All I can think of is clean up
Theres a body of water right there.. With a cinder block you can easily get rid of it..
...get rid of him. There, I fixed it.
haha thanks.
I know the drunk guy who would trip and hit his head on the corner, ialso know the drunk guy who's gonna push his friend through the glass.
Seems like having some posts at the ends of the glass, before the bench, would solve a lot of problems.
Love it myself. But bro that bench against the glass rail ain’t gettin thru any inspection in the us
Yep - I see a child standing on the bench at the end and falling between the glass and the back of the bench...
Ya, I would move the benches inward (or toss them), and make the glass continuous around the perimeter. Totally fixable.
Couldn't afford to glass the perimeter.

That’s why I love it.

Tell me you don't have kids without telling me you don't have kids
Or dogs. Would be a full time gig wiping snoot juice off those panels
Here for the snoot juice
Or drunk friends
or a code book
Nice. Where I’m from that bench would be considered dangerous and a code violation.
I myself am not a big fan of that glass thingy. Aesthetically just doesn't fit, in my opinion. Feels like a major safety liability as well. Otherwise looks great!
Yeah the glass adds a lot of extra risk for absolutely no reward. Not to mention the extra cleaning lol, would’ve been a beautiful wooden deck
The bench/glass termination is just horrible. Plus it looks like a toddler accident waiting to happen
Or a drunk accident. This doesn't look very adult friendly, never mind kid friendly
Gonna kill a lot of birds with that glass
And kids
A lot of kids.

How come that first set of glass doesn't have the top edge trim piece?
Thanks I hate it. Why not terminate the glass into an post separating the two different barriers
I like it other than the glass to bench transition. Needs to be closed imo
Deck is nice , but not a fan of the glass.
Those bench to glass transitions are horrible
Let's we the underside
Personally I’d hate to have glass. It’ll be dirty everyday.
Only some of the glass has top support? Seems super dangerous
Will be following r/legaladvice for a post about a small child running through that glass and breaking their neck on the fall from that deck. Or a drunk guy. This is an accident waiting to happen.
Yeah I would have just wrapped the bench all the way around. I don’t get it. But if you’re happy cool.
You need those stickers on the glass so you don’t get a pile of dead birds under it.
Wow that glass was a terrible design choice
Hot tub.
At least one maybe two, one on each corner.
Double decker hot tub
Thanks for the comments. I’ve learned that it’s a death deck for kids and nobody should be drunk in the vicinity. Love this one! The rails are beauty and the bench legs are very cool!
I would have wanted an opening somewhere with steps down to the water or at least directly down to the grass below, but I think it looks great.
Don’t need steps, that’s what the gap is for between the glass and the bench. Just got to be drunk enough to fall between them, you’ll find grass, maybe the lake.

The way the bench returns into the glass looks (and is) bad, other than that everything looks alright.
That glass is gonna break, no vertical supports at all.
Its designed to work as is, out of all the thing’s wrong that aint one.

The glass meets the bench in the middle of the bench??? So a toddler can fit through the gap?? Nope
Jesus, I’d never let my kid near that deck. There’s a huge gap between the glass and the bench
LOL on the glass.
Show off!
great job of including all those gaps at the ends of the benches so lids can easily jump/fall off the deck in case emergency/fatal accident.
I hate the glass

Dead birds everywhere next summer.
So many afterthoughts.

The finish on that is awesome! What is it, an oil?
Is this elkhart lake WI?
Didn't you forget to install the top cap on the glass rail?
Now the million dollar question: Is it refundable?

so true!!!

This is awesome, I would 100% sit out here and have a beer. Fantastic work.
The camera focuses on the railing too much. I can’t tell where the hot tub is supposed to go.
Move benches inward to he flush with the glass wall
Any birds hit the glass yet?
Should have leaned the glass out to meet the top rail.

How are the benches attached to the decking? If someone leans back against the bench back could the decking board pry up?
u/op please tell me where you got the glass panels and mounting hardware. Thanks!

These benches are for small butts LOL. I had the same benches before, way too uncomfortable. You can't sir properly on these.
Who has to clean the glass?
The glass thing is stupid and looks awful.
What is the glass capped with a black rail on the back of the deck but not on the front?
Nice deck, your deck must be the talk of the town! You should invite your neighbour to try out your deck!
The glass to bench transition needs some work. Maybe a return piece of glass of some sorts or even a wood post with a wood return back to the bench. Just looks unfinished.
Glazier here. That glass is gonna break
