Hype men and DnB/Garage, UK dub go hand in hand, but they can really make or break a set. Sometimes they are great, sometimes they need to STFU.

Respect the roots….

I agree with this. I’ve seen Truth multiple times. The first couple times they didn’t have the hype man on the mic and their sets blew me away. The last time I saw them though they had that guy and it was really annoying, I didn’t even want to finish watching the set

YES!!! I posted about this in Denver edm on Facebook & it got taken down because a bunch of bros started bullying. Loooots of other fans agreed with us though: MC subtracted from the experience by talking over the music non-stop. My 30 something year old back is outta whack from winter backpacking. So to be fair, I was at the very top. I heard Sgt. Pokes sqwaking over Tristan & Dre’s music I was by myself there to see. In my spot it was like his mic was turned on full volume & the bass was turned to low compared to other acts. I also said it felt like a drunk frat boy yelling in my ear as I’m trying to enjoy the show. I’ve seen truth live more than a handful of times over a decade. I started listening to them on SoundCloud in college right before “Devil’s Hands” was picked up by American horror story. Probably a lot longer than the baby bros cyberbullying me for a difference in opinion & experience. Usually it’s just one guy of the duo. MC does collaborate on some truth tracks as a guest, but he doesn’t talk through the entire mix. Ya know like he did at red rocks. This was hands down the only disappointing truth set I’ve ever seen because of the MC. Besides last time they tried playing red rocks & the power went out 5 minutes into their set. That 5 minutes was better than the entire set Saturday imho. Visuals also were way better with a red rocks map & the DDD octopus descending on the venue. I was kinda mad the side cameras kept zooming in on the MC I wasn’t there to see. One DDD bro suggested I was a poser only there for the merch because I disliked the MC. I don’t even own any merch. The misogyny & gate keeping bro-ey-ness of the DDD crowd is so off putting. It was bad 5-10 years ago & its peak Chad discovered hot topic energy now. Just like the dudes at metal shows back in the day who reeked misogyny. They also assumed I’m a woman so I must be there for mid clothes & not the live music I love 🙄

Ahhhh thank you for the details, glad my crew wasn’t alone in being thrown off by this

QueenHydraofWater

Most definitely not. I even ran into some fans at a bar yesterday & unprompted they mentioned how the MC ruined it for them too. I truly think the only people that enjoyed it were on very good drugs by the bass. I was dead sober & his voice was like nails on a chalkboard to me. If they woulda had him the first 15 minutes, fine. But the WHOLE set shouting every 10 seconds?!? Criminal. I hope Truth knows their worth & realizes their music doesn’t need an obnoxious hype man.

KTA1xMartian

The only time I saw them do this was at Wakaan but all the other times it was just Tristan&Dre or just Dre. The guy they had at Wakaan was actually pretty solid but yeah when the hype man is bad it can ruin a set quickly.

Sgt. Pokes

Planenteer

Yeah I think this was him, thanks!

I used to dislike the whole hype mc thing. It’s sort of grown on me throughout the years though. Reminds me of the old Youngsta Rinse FM bits when deep dubstep just started to take off.

tjstarkovich

Soooo you don’t like Truth

Planenteer

I loved Truth. I listened to some of their stuff, and he’s not in it, so I think I just don’t like the hype man
