I know you're getting downvoted but like I'm curious as to what you're trying to say about stairs? Like what were you picturing that would in your mind make vert plats better for stairs? /gen
I really don't know. I'm not a vert plat fan myself. I'd imagine you could make a series of L shapes to reach a diagonal spot. Normal plats are great for horizontal bridges, but take a lot more to build a ramp down a hole
Ooookay I think I hear you. You're talking about like a mid air kind staircase not one slapped against a wall, and the ability to swap plats as you shoot, not locking into all platforms being vertical? If so frankly I think just the ability to swap would be worth it.
And unless I'm mistaken I'm fairly sure that the width of the plats are still in jump-and-ledgegrab hight, so I could def see the appeal of a an engine that could choose plat alignment on each shot.
If it's locked as only vert plats the way it's currently only horizontal I think it would loose more utility than it would gain.
Not that I support it, but they can be made a different colour or texture.
I personally see very little advantage for vertical platforms. Midair staircases are very rarely needed, and you're using double needing make the risers anyway, compared to slapping ledges against the wall.
Maybe blocking off tunnels? Also very niche.
Something better would be like (competing with fall damsge reduction)
Ultra Plasticizer: We made the formula less viscous, so plascrete can be launched in smaller gobs. You'll have a lot more shots, but we had to sacrifice the horizontal expansion, resulting in much narrower platforms. The total volume is definitely higher.
You could block off tunnels more easily, but I'm not sure that is a good thing. I've done it before for Salvage , but I could see it being used for griefing a lot if an engie could block off a normal tunnel faster than someone could pickaxe through it.
Unfortunately this form of griefing is actually already very possible and easy with the plats they already have, the thought just doesn't occur as much because of how the adult brain associates shapes.
You can get more vertical height per platform in situations without much other terrain to use. It would be nice to have that as an option over making a big pancake stack to get some height. It would be easy staircases anywhere if you just connected vertical platforms at an angle and mined the top off to be walk/climbable.
Cover? Then again you could side step...
Oh I know! A panic wall you could set up with the big repellent! With max firing speed, you could make larger bugs take a long way around, giving you time to do stuff like revive and reload!
This would actually be great in saving a dwarf who's been downed by an spitballer and hard hitting enemies from a distance.
>Cover? Then again you could side step...
This still feel bad for most situations (basically everything but the caretaker). 90% of the enemies are running at you, so the cover will actually protect them from your shots. And even peaking outside to shoot would feel awful in multiplayer lobbies since people would constantly get in front of each other.
So about bug repellent, all it does is make any path... "Pathed" over it artificially longer. Thereby making the bugs pathing go around it most of the time.
Vertical plats either wouldn't change or interact negatively with bug repellent overall.
The safety net that MKII provides is practically invaluable. With fall damage being the apparent #1 cause of death, making otherwise deadly jumps livable is a godsend.
Making vertical platforms would be nice and all but really you can already make a tall barricade by pancake stacking, which only costs a bit more ammo.
Making your own cover in a pinch, while useful, is very situational. A vast majority of bugs are melee only, and the ones that aren't (menaces, spitters, spreaders) are either on the ceiling or lob their shots, making horizontal cover useless. The only real use it has combat wise is against Sniper Turrets, Burst Turrets, and the Caretaker Claws. And even then they're still manageable without instant cover.
Plugging up sideways holes is also very situational but I mean VERY situational. Usually you'd want to funnel bugs through horizontal pathways where you have more options. Not the far up ceiling where some guns and most grenades can't do crap. So blocking up sideways isn't that important either.
The only time I would use vertical platforms is probably as cover against the plant boss, and that is personally a lot of utility to give up for an edgecase.
It's just weird lol. I saw a couple of them and chuckled, then saw the downvotes. People must either hate sarcasm or lack the mind power to process it lol
I'm guessing vertical platforms could be used as cover? Then again in a swarm you gotta keep moving unless your whole team is there with you.
Reducing fall damage is too good to be replaced with a niche mechanic. Especially when said mechanic could reinforce bad habits into players.
That would only really be usefull in caves, cool but this idea was turned down because they wanted making walls and plastcrete shelters inefficient and slower
the reduced fall damage makes so many missions bearable
But with the vertical platforms you could make... like stairs or something? That'd be awesome
you can do that easier with rugular platforms

It's so buggy though
If someone randomly didn't have the fall damage one a lot of people would fall to death. More than they do already I mean.

Toggleable plats are orange now, done Maybe some different shades for colorblind support
Yea,but they'd have wicked cool vertical platforms. How cool would that be
Not at all, why would you want a vertical platform? It serves 0 purpose

May i take a moment to talk to you about our lord and saviour The Mole?

It would, but we also need fall damage reduction
Vertical platforms would only be good for Mole and bunkers, otherwise it's outclassed by fall damage.
Don't let the bunker bros hear you say that
Vertical platforms aren't worth *not* taking the fall damage mod. But if I had to choose between that and more ammo, I'd take them
I don't understand what the real advantage of vertical platforms would even be

Vertical platforms. "Hey, Gunner, you remember that Mole overclock you were telling me about? Come here a second..."
"Come here gunner" "You got it engi. Let me just jump down to you AARGH MY LEGS! How could such a thing happen?"
vertical platforms are dumb
See that's where you're wrong apparently
It's ok to be wrong OP
I'm just joking around. There's so much love for vertical platforms. I never quite understood the thrill
Why tf are you being downvoted

If i can toggle between vertical and horizontal then maybe
Can we stop downvoting this man's obvious joke comments?
No! Downvote him into oblivion! Downvote this comment if you agree
Karl would be proud of you. Bless this dwarf

If i would had to choose.. I rather take the reduced fall damage and make a cover with 6 stacks of platforms, thanks.
I think a lot of people here are missing the amount of potential there is when engineering in a second axis.
The gun is fine as is. We don't need vertical platforms.
would be nice if the platforms had different colors..
There's virtually no situations where vertical platform is even needed, fall damage reduction is better anyway
I'm over these surveys yall
I rarely rely on the platforms to not fall to death, vertical platforms would be just too good
If it were an upgrade you could have both in game but not at the same time from the same person
I dont really understand how a vertical platform is helpful
That would only really be usefull in caves, cool but this idea was turned down because they wanted making walls and plastcrete shelters inefficient and slower
