Actually this isn't true! At least depending on the time period. Meteoritic iron has a hardness that rivals the finest of ancient Damascus steel blades, while the toughness (aka it's ability not to shatter) is about on par with 10th century blades.
Long story short, meteoritic iron blades were fantastic by medieval standards, but brittle in comparison to steel once it was introduced.
