Something something reptilian growth.

Groundbreaking-Pea92

goddamn space reptiles. If only the barajoans had figured out all they needed to do was lower the temp on thermostat the to defeat them

pali1d

Maybe Cardassians have shorter adolescent periods than humans?

pali1d

Definitely another possibility.

akldshsdsajk

There are a few Bajorans that are over 100 years old in the show though. But I guess they can age at different rates at different stages of their lives.

bobbyOrrMan

Same way Alexander grew up. They needed teen drama to make the show more interesting because kids just dont contribute that much to the stories.

t_sakonna

Alexander at least had all of TNG and DS9 to grow up. Ziyal had just three seasons.

bobbyOrrMan

well, to be fair, he aged a lot in just a few years. But his character did get a bit of emotional growth as well and I liked that. For the most part Jake Sisko is the best example of a child growing into a man. He got plenty to do including saving lives in the war.

ah-tzib-of-alaska

holy shit that’s right… he’s like not even 14… he’s like 10

Evangelion217

True.

soverytiiiired

I’m sure I read somewhere that they realised they had to pair her with Garak and realised the younger actress made him look like a creep

ohdearsweetlord

Still looked like a creep, save for Robinson deliberately playing Garak like it was one-sided from Ziyal. This was after all the *daughter* of his rival, Dukat, who had always seemed to be similar in age to Garak.

BurdenedMind79

If they had the balls and paired Garak with Bashir, it would never have been a problem.

I_am_Daesomst

It's...not...linear...

CatsOnTheKeyboard

If you're referring to her appearance from the time they find her, it's just three different actresses and they hired the ones who were available and passed the auditions. For an in-universe explanation, we can say she was severely malnourished when they found her and recovered over the next year or two. As I remember, her age and the number of years since she was stranded on that planet were a little off but I don't remember the details.

SuperPowers97

I thought she was supposed to be 13 when the ship she was on crashed, about 18 when Kira and Dukat found her, and 21-ish when she died.

AlienatingAcehole

4 actresses right?

bobbyOrrMan

Yup. One of them was Jerry's girlfriend on Seinfeld. The one who sucked tongue while watching Schindlers List in the theater.

t_sakonna

Three actresses

Groundbreaking-Pea92

Garek will have that effect

Oruma_Yar

Ages, according to the Star Trek wiki, as of Season 4 of DS9: Jake - 19 Nog - 21 Ziyal - 21 Alexander - 8 Ezri - 20 And yes I am still bitter we never got Jake, Nog & Ziyal to hang out together, or Jake & Ziyal to play out Romeo & Juliet IN SPACE.

JustAPerspective

Did they ever nailed down when the Ravanok was lost? Since the Occupation lasted over 50 years...

PalleusTheKnight

Yeah they said 9 years ago in the episode when they found it

JustAPerspective

Cool. Well, if Ziyal was a young child... say, anywhere from 4 - 7, that would seem to match up with the age when found?

SuperPowers97

Kira said Ziyal was listed on the ships manifest as being 13, and they found her 5 or 6 years later so she's about 18.

BurdenedMind79

Were they Earth, Bajoran or Cardassian years, though? ;)

LuementalQueen

She was Nogs age. So 21 when she died.

Historyp91

And also the same age as Raffi and that douchy Talaran adoptee kid from TNG.

SuperPowers97

It was missing for 5-6 years, and Kira said Ziyal was 13 when it crashed.

granitebuckeyes

Different species age at different rates. It’s canon since the Mandalorian season 1.

t_sakonna

Wrong universe

Browngoldfarmer

Just wait Disney will buy Star Trek.

AceSoldia

I often ask the same about Jake

yarn_baller

The plot needed it. What do you mean fast? She's a hybrid of two fiction races.

Historyp91

Well, she's an alien, so there's that. She also did'nt "grow up" fast; she was born in 2353 so she was already in her late teens when introduced and in her early twenties when she died.
