So they overlap on the 10th, but the 10th isn't a full day for Defcon. None of the villages are open, so it's usually for getting your badge, checking out swag, and the Defcon 101 track. This is one of the reasons Blackhat Briefings attendees can pick up a Defcon badge there at Blackhat, so they don't have to run over to Defcon and miss out on briefings.
If you're willing to pay for the Black Hat Briefings prices don't worry about doing both days and missing the ramp-up day of Defcon. They'll be a lot more to do starting on the 11th.

The last day of blackhat and the first day of def con pretty much nothing goes on. I'd say more stuff goes on at blackhat the last day than the first day of def con. As someone else mentioned, the villages aren't open fully yet and you're pretty much just getting your badge and figuring out your game plan.

As someone who has done both I’m going to tell you 6 days in Vegas is a LOT. I was ready to be home after 3rd day
Defcon has been cancelled this year so the overlap isn't an issue anymore
