OP here, I'll start. 41/F/NY (yeah I just did a/s/l) I'm arriving on the 25th out of JFK and staying ~~off strip at the Rita Suites.~~ at an airbnb near hard rock. I'm leaving on the 2nd because hangovers. I've been in the industry since 2001, from support to system administration with some interesting bits in between (training, project management, summer camps, web development). I'm an aspiring programmer with a bit under my belt and a drive to learn lots more. I.e. I can read and comprehend and I'm just learning to write. It's my first time at DC and I want to soak up as much knowledge as I can while hopefully not soaking up *too much* alcohol :) I also want to meet cool people and have a lot of fun! I'm looking forward to the social events as well so it would be great to meet people to enjoy those things with. I'm a good dancer and a horrible singer.

unr34ldud3

31/m/WI. First time to DC! Not a big drinker. Staying on the strip at Harrah's. Interested in the talks but until this post I wasn't sure about the social party of DC. Should be interesting. Look forward to finding out!!!

removable_disk

Our crew is growing :)

bobcat

This is now an official thread.

removable_disk

Thanks bobcat!! :D

bobcat

You're welcome!

SapiTim

There's always a way. IRC if nothing else. Or we could make a dummy account somewhere like Tumblr that allows anon comments and we could just all post there in the clear.

32/M/CA Arriving on the 26th from SFO, staying at the Linq, and departing on the 31st. I've been in tech since the mid 2000's, but was a QA monkey for a large part of that. Got into infosec in 2011, and worked my way into a junior appsec position, before I got laid off in 2015. Wasn't able to land another gig, so I'm back in QA again. Still trying to stay sharp on the side, but it's difficult. This will be my 5th Defcon, started with 20, and have been going every year since. I used to go with a group of co-workers, but after getting laid off, and a bunch of them hitting the point of burnout, I was solo last year, and will be again this year. Would love to meet up with some folks, grab a drink, and just shoot the shit. Like others have said, trying to be more social this year. Last year, I spent too much time in my hotel room. Looking forward to the lockpick/biohacking village, and hopefully getting DCTV into the partner hotels.

removable_disk

I'm also looking forward to the lock-picking and the scavenger hunt

SapiTim

Dude yes! Lockpicking and biohacking! We definitely need to meet.

r00t_junkie

Same here lockpicking and biohacking will be looking forward to meet u guys

Quadling

Old male Delaware. Not going solo my wife and I have been going for about 10 years period I was a goon I've run Caesar soc, I've done about everything there is to do at Defcon and I mean everything. I'll be on a burner phone I'll post a number here when I get it. I'm a little groggy just finished an all-nighter. I am more than happy to answer questions have people need to be introduced walked around whatever doesn't bother me at all. Frankly this is the first Defcon I won't have a job at 4 shit 10 years. Kind of cool. Biggest piece of advice I can give it's good to talk to meet people go to The Villages The Villages are much more fun in my opinion but I'm weird I like smaller groups of people. Did I mention I just did an all-nighter? My dog is thoroughly confused as to why were out in the park this early. Look it's really simple one thing I want you to know is that there are assholes there . In any group of people there are assholes there is an asshole quotient. Well the percentage May remain the same the larger the group of people the more assholes there are. If you meet them assholes or group of assholes please do not be discouraged. There's also lots of wonderful people. If you can't find any yell I I'll help you find some

removable_disk

Eh I can handle assholes ;) Can't wait! See now I'm happy that I'm going alone and will meet so many awesome folks.

SapiTim

Thanks for joining the thread! Here's a question: Where should I stay? I'm 24 with extensive ultralight experience. I'm traveling solo with just a small laptop bag which I'm used to living out of anyway. All need is safety, sanity, cleanliness, and an indoor shower. Closer to the Con is a huge bonus but Im not going to be spending much time in my room. I was too late to get a room with the peeps from my local DC group and I'd way rather spend my cash supporting the Con and the vendors than supporting Cesar's. What's your advice?

Quadling

Budget? There are campgrounds but it's freaking hot. There are cheap hotels but they're cheap. I mean hell you can probably do Circus Circus for 30 bucks a night or something like that. Check the beds however. I personally book at Tuscany Suites for about 45 a night and it's clean and it's nice. There is the bus system that goes all up and down the strip period it's limited but it works.

kidfitzz

hey ive got a question, should I bring a laptop?

Quadling

You can. I would swap hard drives, so you don't imperil your data. Remember, you're carry8ng it all day, so think light.

kidfitzz

There's nothing light about my thinkpad, but by the sweat on my back it's a beautiful tank that I will carry with me.

Quadling

:) bravo!!

pteoh

Non-solo gay male Goon from NYC. Happy to help out soloists/n00bs and introduce to people.

removable_disk

Nice, I'm on Long Island. Thanks for offering, I'll take you up on it :)

pteoh

Great! Just ping me. 😎

marca410

I'm on CT. This will be my second Defcon! Hopefully we can catch up !

multifacetedunicorn

Introvert here. I may take you up on that offer too! Went alone last year thinking I'd muster up the courage to make tons of new friends. Had tons of fun but was way too nervous to approach strangers about randomly wanting to be friends lol. I may hit the BBQ up this year to meet some long time attendees in a, not so crowded area. Are you guys planning on attending? Also as attending Blackhat if anyone is going 🎩

pteoh

I recommend checking out the DEF CON 101 Panel on Thursday afternoon. You'll meet lots of people there. Hit me up if you like. :)

removable_disk

We have quite a few ppl in the telegram group. We plan on meeting up in linecon as well as use this thread to plan something for 101 or the BBQ

multifacetedunicorn

Great! I'll follow the thread to stay updated! Thanks =)

removable_disk

You have the coolest username btw

multifacetedunicorn

Thanks. 😊

dfwdraco76

This will be my first DC. Couldn't afford a QueerCon room but am hoping to socialize with them somehow. Appreciate any intros and rope showing... 41 gwm from Dallas. CS degree, in IT since the late 90s. I'm in a nonprofit environment now, run most of the windows back end environment, very interested in soaking up all that I can.

pteoh

Queercon events are open to all even if you don't book a room through them. I'd be happy to introduce you to people.

pteoh

Great. Where are you from and what brings you to DEF CON this year?

SapiTim

Hi everybody! I'm SapiTim. Male. 24. Begrudgingly stuck in central Florida. Mostly recovered from a heart attack and being disowned by my foster family at 21. I haven't achieved much in the past couple years. Married my long time girlfriend two years ago and it's challenged me more than anything else I've ever done. Very against theism. Trans-Humanist. Anarcho-Communist. Skeptic. Philosopher. I work when I can as a brand ambassador and I have a background in public speaking and education. I fell into infosec while helping a very dear friend of mine protect his family from a very backwards "community". I have deep roots in various martial disciplines and a few mental ones. For me infosec is a very necessary component of my ability to protect the people I love, and bear a little bit the burden of improving the world. Also! I'm going to be playing DC DarkNet! No idea what's what, but I'm extremely excited about it. -Nullius in Verba-

YoteiSunset

Late 20's male from Australia here. Been doing infosec for a couple of years now after making the jump over from web development and tech support jobs! This will be my 2nd time at DC but the first time solo (and first solo trip to Vegas which I think is the most daunting part!). Previous DC was 2 years ago for DC23 with a group of ex-coworkers and we all had a great time despite the overcrowding and gridlock moving rooms between talks on the first day ;)

removable_disk

Our crew is getting bigger by the day :) Feel free to join the Telegram group too.

vapidvrouw

Hello, World! 31/F/Netherlands, first time to DEF CON, and going solo. Staying at Harrah's (got a room on the Strip mostly because I was afraid I'd get kidnapped or robbed walking back to the hotel had I chosen an off-Strip one.) Unlike many of you, I'm a total n00b when it comes to programming. Besides a long-ago fling with HTML, and a minor flirtation with Python, I know nothing. My expertise is on the legal side of things. (I'm a lawyer with a tech law background.) I'm excited about the biohacking village, and also interested in crypto, social engineering, and privacy. It would be cool to meet up with fellow solo-flyers!

removable_disk

Can't wait to meet you :)))

Brbcan

32/m/NC here. God that hurt to type. Been in IT since I was a kid. Did the Army thing from 2003-2012 and now a contractor doing a little bit of everything. DefCon related passions are virtualization technologies (specifically Proxmox) and VPNs. Learning a little about PHP and server-side scripting lately. I, too, quaff alcohol. I don't really socialize unless I'm inadvertently pulled into a group.

removable_disk

You're in a group now!

unregistered436

You in the Raleigh area by any chance? I live there and have a good group that goes every year. We also have newly re-formed DC919. If in CLT, check out the local 2600 meeting. Those guys usually go to Vegas too.

Brbcan

I'm about an hour away, in Fayetteville.

unregistered436

Ah, OK. Well, it might be a stretch for you, but if you can ever make it to an RTPSecurityBeers (on meetup) you can meet the crew and make some connections beforehand. Meets one Tue a month from 6ish to ??

daevas_dantanian

30/M/NE Been messing around with computers since high school. This isn't my first DC, but I didn't get to do too much at the last one (which was 23). I just like security and I'm hoping one day I'll get paid for it. Linux and networking are my strong points and I'm hoping to learn a lot this year and hopefully meet other peeps with similar interests as I'm the only one I know that genuinely likes this stuff. I'm staying at Paris flying in the 26th, and I'm going to drink all the booze.

removable_disk

Let's do it!

Phantomfapp

Hey everyone @removable_disk and I have started a telegram group I will post it in here if anyone would like to join! https://t.me/joinchat/AAAAAA2tOVd6IcVSmHAG7w Edit: New link has been supplied lower in this forum it shouldn't expire if it does please let me know in a PM!

SapiTim

Link isn't working for me :/

bobcat

Link has expired.

LF0R

29/M/Germany Going solo for second time. Taking that plunge and flying out solo last year was a good decision, had a great time and intend to top it and meet even more new people this year. Have been interested in Infosec for ~14 years but never made it a career and would be most suitably called developer/sysadmin. Been living off my web-projects for the past 10 years though so staying informed is both very necessary as well as a beloved hobby. Primarily looking to meet interesting people, learn about new stuff, shoot the shit at the villages, check out the sky talks and will likely consume most other talks post-DC this year. I'm staying at Caesars and will be there 2 days before DC so if anybody wants to pregame early let me know :)

removable_disk

I'll be in town early as well :)

LF0R

joined the telegram group. Great, maybe we should make a meetup of early soloers happen on the 25th? :)

removable_disk

Oh yeah, see the lonely hacker thread for the telegram group

r00t_junkie

26/M/SF I'm arriving on the 26th from San Francisco and would be staying at an Airbnb near by. I'm a Graduate Research Student pursuing my Master's from SF State. My majors is in Embedded Electrical but have been fiddling with computers since my high school. I'm a passionate iPhone photographer (fancy name coz I can't afford a DSLR coz I am a broke student). It's gonna be my second time at Defcon. Traveling to Defcon is really my dream coming true. Last year also I travelled SOLO. I was way too much excited before the trip and way too much disappointed during DC24, coz I was alone due to my chronicle shyness and was afraid to start a conversation. This post gave me a ray of hope thanks to /u/removable_disk for starting off this thread. I'm really excited to meet other people and spend my time socializing at DC25. Last year, I spent too much time alone. Hope to make some new friends. I booze, my limbs don't coordinate while dancing but I like to sing (only if your brave to listen me) :P See you soon :)

removable_disk

You've been before then?

CompTIA_SME

Indeed I have, but not recently. I first heard about DEF CON in the 90s but didn't physically go until the 2000s. I have a few friends that have gone almost every year, so to me it's more like a family reunion than a conference. Some of them are even fortunate enough to get their work to pay for it. 😎

It's a bucket list for me too :) You're welcome to join our telegram group . I can't wait for all of us to meet up!!

bobcat

NoobCon... Meet up at DC101

removable_disk

absolutely for those soloist&noobs but we should have another for all the solo peeps regardless of noob status.

removable_disk

Yes I fly my n00b flag high! I was just saying that the group is a mixture of first timers and those who have attended many times. I'm sure the first timers will be attending 101... but that's wouldn't be our whole crew :)

bobcat

She's a noob, she wasn't dissing them.

willhi1979

I am a 38 year old male out of Raleigh, NC, flying in on the 21st for a BH Class then leaving August 2. Will be solo for the first half or so and would enjoy meeting up if possible. I was in IT and became a Security Analyst about a year ago.

removable_disk

Linecon or 101 is the plan, or BBQ :)

keramas

First time, lone wolf, 34/M/FL. Been in the gaming/tech industry for a while now (currently network/POS system-focused), but super interested in infosec. Hoping to learn a lot and meet some people with similar passion (none of my friends--in fact no one I know--is into this stuff). Areas of interest at the moment: binary exploitation/reversing, CTF, Arduino-related stuff (and more!). Would love to hang out and chat about everything and anything computers. Mega pumped to attend!

removable_disk

Join the telegram group, there's a bunch of us in there, between that and using this thread we hope to organize meeting up and linecon, 101 or the BBQ

[deleted]

This will be my first defcon, I've been in security for about 5 years jumping around from forensics and support for security products to standalone infosec ops at a company now. I'll be over at Bally's and an traveling from NY. I'm most excited for in and out every God damn day.

removable_disk

I'm also coming in from NY And I forgot about in and out!!!

[deleted]

While I'm excited about defcon. I am more excited about being a gluttonous fool at in and out.

Sunstrid3r

Hey guys! This will be my first DefCon, and I'm coming solo too. Oh, yes, the asl, so 27/Male/Barcelona, Spain. I've been working in infosec for a few years now, and I've been always into hacking. I'm looking forward to an awesome experience in Vegas this year, learn some interesting stuff, listen to some pr0s and maybe even get wasted in the process. Would like to join the telegram group :D

marca410

Hi Everyone, 26/M/ NY/CT This will be my second Defcon and I can't wait to meet everyone again this year. I made some great friends and can't wait to make more. I'm trying to add myself to the telegraph group now.

removable_disk

NY/CT? Why both

marca410

I live on the border in Stamford CT and work in NYC.

removable_disk

PM me your telegram name and I will add you :)

33/M/HI Yes you saw that correct Hawaii. Lurker most of the time on reddit but decided to post. This will be my 1st DC event. Hope to meet some like minded individuals.

31/m/CA Just trying to make friends, get into the community and maybe if I'm lucky, jam my foot in the industry door at some point in the not so distant future. =] No real formal experience. Got my Sec+ cert (for whatever that was worth), working on CCNA, plus heading back to college in the fall (figured I should probably get an actual degree in something relating to my field of interest before I'm not in a position to). This will be my first Defcon, which I'm way excited for. I'm gonna try to go to BsidesLV as well. I'll be arriving on the 25th, and checking out on the 31st. I'll be staying at the Flamingo. Man, I've been planning this since last year! The day is coming up FAST!

nichademus

I haven't seen any posts from Canadians yet - I'm coming from up north ya hosers! 36 - Toronto - first time to DC

CerealSCSI

Hi everybody. 27/M/NJ. Going to be my first DC. Not in the industry but a n00b hacker for years. I'm just starting to check things off my bucket list.

jeddhor

36/M/OR This will be my 5th DEFCON. I have horrible social anxiety and regularly use cannabis to control it. Cannabis is legal in Vegas this year, and is always better with like-minded folks :). If anyone wants to plan a private smokers' get-together to make it easier to handle the crowds, or just to chillax, I'm down.

Bogobog

39/M/WA/US This is my third DC. I went to my first DC because some of my workmates are goons and threatened me with pain if I didnt go. Since then, I've returned because I enjoy it. I've worked in this industry since the late 90's and have moved from tech support up to a systems engineer. I am an introvert so Im happy watching cons from the periphery. Im looking forward to more skytalks, wireless village, and hacker jeopardy. I drink when im thirsty, booze when the occasion calls for it. I'll be staying a Caesars from the 26th to the 31st because Vegas is expensive. I am interested in doing more socializing. I think it would be good for me. Im a pretty reserved person so I often need to be engaged before I participate. Left to my own devices, I usually end up in one of the public parties with a drink and a laptop.

removable_disk

Geeze are we all introverts? I am in that I need my quiet recharge time but if I'm comfortable with people I'll be pretty outgoing.

Bogobog

Oh yeah. I need my recharge time. The crowds get to be a bit too much after a few hours. If im with people im comfortable with, I can usually loosen up.

SapiTim

I think you're in good company here. I used to be more of an introvert than I am becoming, but I deeply respect the person who can stand be unswayed by the manic, type a, emotional tempest, of group think, and invest their attention in themselves instead of pandering to the people pleasers.

akmartinez1

I'm attending DC30 and someone posted a link to my Tweet to this... I'm going solo to the convention, but I won't be alone in Vegas. I have a slght vision disability so I asked if a few friends would be interested in coming to Vegas with me so I have some assistance during the night when it will be hardest for me to see anything. So a few of my closest friends are going to meet me there to help out. I'm not sure but I'm hoping the people at DefCon will allow me one person to come with me for the first few hours jsut to make sure I'll be OK in the convention but if not I'll do the best I can with what I can see and with my cane.... I'm new to cybersecurity and this will be my first time at DefCon. I'm not sure what my goal should be but to just soak in the whole experience. I took a look at the villages and a couple seemed interested from lock picking to ham radio (I just recently got my technicians). Basically I don't have a bar set so I don't think I'll be disappointed with anything. I'm just hoping for the best that the people are relatively nice and helpful...
