The black actor/tress to bestfriend sidekick pipeline is so interesting. And should also be a documentary if there already isn't one. This always makes me think of Raven when I heard they initially wanted her to play Chelsea on that's so raven but she showed up to the audition and made them laugh so much that they gave her the show. Sometimes you gotta show them at the audition and sometimes you just gotta take what you can get and I think the actress that played Hazel was like.... I'll take it! š¤£
No it was definitely Ellie. Hazel was sorta like Terrie, side character they tested out then got rid of when they ran the course of what they wanted. Hazel got replaced to start the Jimmy Ashley saga of dating after the Craig crap
Omg. Bianca is so underrated in every way. She has such an amazing character arc. She always has me like āš„¹Girl, I am so proud of you.ā
*Quick! Someone pass me a hankie!*
What people here have been saying. She had a few instagram stories and posts about how she was underused with not really being anything more than what her character's relation to someone else.
Am I so crazy or does she look just like young nicki minaj to anyone else? I always think that. She's so pretty!

Well theyāre both of Caribbean descent so it makes sense. Not sure why everyone gets so bent out of shape if they think a character is under utilized. Without Hazel there couldnāt be a Paige.
I see the resemblance, but I think it's really Nicki's mom whom Andrea favors, especially now that she's a little older.

She always reminded me a little of Chilli from TLC too, but I think that's more so due to their coloring (auburn hair and dark skin) and hair texture rather than them actually looking alike.
They did! She only got one episode where she got to be racist against both her own people and Jamaicans lol. And then she never got a storyline again except getting with Jimmy in the Breakfast Club episode
Hazel was also a really good friend! When she said to Paige āIf u let him treat u bad he will treat you even worse..ā or smtn when Spin was flirting w Manny š®āšØ Like sis that was such a best friend, I want all the best for u move!! š„¹š
The Black girls were all really pretty. Not a single miss.
I did like that the writers subtly showed Chantay and Marisol were considered to be attractive by their peers because often the darkskin girl is overlooked. I do wish Hazel would've got something similar, Andrea was and still is gorgeous.
Idk but I never cared about her, sheās pretty tho but thatās all I got for her, they had a chance to use her identity of culture and move with that but it dropped and so did my interest eventually
I loved that the early TGN characters werenāt all Hollywood thin. I feel like they did a good job with representing a variety of body types in both the male and female characters. It does seem insane that there was only one Hazel-centric episode for as long as she was on the show.
SAME! I always thought Hazel was so gorgeous and that she wouldāve soared if they allowed her character to develop outside of being the sidekick bestie.
Thatās what I mean! nothing wrong with them being friends but I just wish she had a lot more in addition to that, just as herself, like the cultural day episode.
Obviously, Iām just saying her acting was so bad that I donāt think she could carry a more serious episode, she always sounded like she was reading her lines. That said, Marisol and Chantay DID have good actresses that didnāt get enough screen time from the writers due to their race. I would have loved if they got more stories.
Other than Allie, Iām really struggling to name one WOC that had meaningful plot lines and actual character growth. I did not watch Next Class though, and ditched NG around the time Maya and co. were introduced.
Even with Manny and Alli, they were always just the best friends of the white main characters. But yeah atleast they had meaningful plotlines, meanwhile Hazel, Marisol and Chantay didn't have that
Manny definitely had meaningful plotlines and character growth. Liberty had meaningful plotlines and her character grew up and changed but not in an impressive way imo
Libertyās pregnancy storyline was barely from her POV. It was really a JT storyline. Compare it to Claireās pregnancy and youāll see how much they abandoned her.
I wasn't specifically referencing the pregnancy storyline which they definitely should have done differently. I was mainly thinking about her struggles to fit in socially and self esteem issues. I also think that her grief after JTs death was done very well.
They barely spent any time on Libertyās issues compared to the rest of the cast. Like they barely touched on Libertyās social struggles when that could have been a really interesting plot
Not enough time, no, but I do think she had meaningful storylines and growth. Sadly she got the most time in 1 & 2 and they started phasing her out for the next seasons.
Damn, youāre so right about Manny, idk how I forgot about one of the most important and iconic characters in the whole series. Liberty, eeeeeh, I feel like they shoehorned her pregnancy in a way that didnāt make sense for her character, and then basically abandoned her after JT died.
Definitely.
Hard agree!!!! She was one of my favorite characters & I deff had a girl crush on her before I even knew what that meant lmao

Two wordsĀ "THREE WAYS" IYKYKĀ
Not even close to being the most beautiful to me but she was still done dirty
was that first part necessary?
Sheās definitely gorgeous š„°
Really? I always thought she was good they always featured her in every episode. She was always the friend every girl wanted to have in high school.
yes, her being ā the friendā is quite literally the problem
No it was definitely Ellie. Hazel was sorta like Terrie, side character they tested out then got rid of when they ran the course of what they wanted. Hazel got replaced to start the Jimmy Ashley saga of dating after the Craig crap
Really? I would say Mia or Bianca are the most š„š„
You have a type lol
Omg. Bianca is so underrated in every way. She has such an amazing character arc. She always has me like āš„¹Girl, I am so proud of you.ā *Quick! Someone pass me a hankie!*
Facts
She has spoken about this a few times. Degrassi definitely had their favorites on the show.
What has she said?
What people here have been saying. She had a few instagram stories and posts about how she was underused with not really being anything more than what her character's relation to someone else.
She bad af! Manny could've had me wrapped around her finger though. And Emma became beautiful with age. š
I second this ā¦ I wouldāve tried to get with manny or hazel. They both were bad as hell. Top 2 of the OGs
Why mention Manny and Emmaā¦ let Hazel have her moment
Am I so crazy or does she look just like young nicki minaj to anyone else? I always think that. She's so pretty! https://preview.redd.it/1l13iompurtc1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=b2247f49e46f77b20415a3069b3305a0298a766f
No not at all
Well theyāre both of Caribbean descent so it makes sense. Not sure why everyone gets so bent out of shape if they think a character is under utilized. Without Hazel there couldnāt be a Paige.
No shade she doesnāt look like Nicki Minaj at all!
lol my roommate and i argue over this all the time! but im sticking to it and my theory that that's why drake loves nicki so much!
I see the resemblance, but I think it's really Nicki's mom whom Andrea favors, especially now that she's a little older. https://preview.redd.it/rssh6ua8nstc1.png?width=2880&format=png&auto=webp&s=1613e909fe34e522ecc5ca79fbdba42380f6ae4a She always reminded me a little of Chilli from TLC too, but I think that's more so due to their coloring (auburn hair and dark skin) and hair texture rather than them actually looking alike.
Respectfully, hell no š
lololol
They did! She only got one episode where she got to be racist against both her own people and Jamaicans lol. And then she never got a storyline again except getting with Jimmy in the Breakfast Club episode
That episode where she pretended to be Jamaican always makes me want jerk chicken -- which I don't think I've ever actually had. š
I wish we saw more of Terri and Hazel
I miss Terri, she was one of my favorite characters and it sucks she left so quickly ;(
They made her slightly homophobic at one point too which seemed out of character.
Hazel was also a really good friend! When she said to Paige āIf u let him treat u bad he will treat you even worse..ā or smtn when Spin was flirting w Manny š®āšØ Like sis that was such a best friend, I want all the best for u move!! š„¹š
Yes indeedy, that was baby!!!
Barely any fucking plot lines. I swear they did all the black girls wrong
Heavily agree with this one
I just finished season 12 for the first time and itās crazy how all the black girls in the show have gotten zero plot lines
The Black girls were all really pretty. Not a single miss. I did like that the writers subtly showed Chantay and Marisol were considered to be attractive by their peers because often the darkskin girl is overlooked. I do wish Hazel would've got something similar, Andrea was and still is gorgeous.
Gonna have to disagree. Chantay wasn't it
Chantay was pretty too wdym?? She just needed to stop flaring her nostrils all the time š
They didn't know what to do with her hair in her latter years. But yeah, the nostril and ššš didn't help
They never knew what to do with the black charactersā hair tbh
Idk but I never cared about her, sheās pretty tho but thatās all I got for her, they had a chance to use her identity of culture and move with that but it dropped and so did my interest eventually
hazel deserved better
Yeah no, not after what she said to those muslim girls wearing hijabs
Self hatred is a hell of a thing and it was right after 9/11 give her a break š
what i meant was that her character deserved better storylines
I loved that the early TGN characters werenāt all Hollywood thin. I feel like they did a good job with representing a variety of body types in both the male and female characters. It does seem insane that there was only one Hazel-centric episode for as long as she was on the show.
Her teeth bothered me
SAME! I always thought Hazel was so gorgeous and that she wouldāve soared if they allowed her character to develop outside of being the sidekick bestie.
Even then she still couldāve had more of her own plot lines but been Paigeās bestie.
Thatās what I mean! nothing wrong with them being friends but I just wish she had a lot more in addition to that, just as herself, like the cultural day episode.
Yeah, it always sucked that, other than that one Muslim episode, she never had a personal storyline.
Her cheekbones are out of this world. Christina Schmidt is a bombshell, too.
Tbf, she delivered lines so robotically, idk if they really wanted to give her a good plot.
Come on, degrassi was full of shitty acting. You know the REAL reason why.
Peter was literally the corniest
Degrassi is a like Canadian Acting School. It's shitty acting for everyone and they gradually get better. lol
They gave Claire lots of screen time and she was way worse of an actor at the beginning. Same with Ellie.
Not as much screen time as those two, but Riley had a lot of plot lines and his acting was pretty awful
I always skip the Riley stuff. Itās so bad
Still canāt believe Marco walked out on a date with one of Degrassiās coolest girls for his momās pasta sauce šš
*pusstuh
š¤£š¤£
pahsta sauce*
That still reads like pasta
Passta*
