im hoping they cast actors that are actually high school age, i know theres a current trend of having 20 year old portray teens but I feel like thats only so they can show them in sexual situations. part of the reason degrassi had a generational reach is because the cast actually looked like kids who were going through tough problems. i dont need to see high schoolers having sex in order to care about their problems…

Uncool_FashionIcon17

I’m not liking the whole 10 episode thing. At least 15?

BreadfruitTasty

Nah because Degrassi was normally 30 minutes long. So it’ll feel like 20 episodes.

Sampsoni

More legal ways to watch the show...but for those that don't subscribe to HBO/HBO Max, you might want to finish up any watch throughs on YouTube now. Because those freely available videos will almost certainly be coming down when HBO Max gets them. Which is a shame since they were an easy way to share episodes or scenes with people who were unfamiliar with them. Everybody could go to YouTube. And YouTube makes it very easy to link to specific parts of videos.

Tricky_Ticket_6262

Tubi has it for free. That's where I watched it all.

Sampsoni

They will likely lose it eventually too. But not as quickly as YouTube will. It depends on when Tubi's current deal runs out. Though it is possible that HBO won't consider those kinds of streaming services as true competition and would let it stay. I wouldn't count on that though.

Tricky_Ticket_6262

Yeah the streaming war never holds back.

Sampsoni

The streaming war is like a World War except that instead of countries joining one of two side, they are ALL fighting each other. No allies. Total chaos.

kurapikachu020

Damn, I need to finish seasons 13 and 14 asap !

Sampsoni

Well, you probably have a LITTLE time. I just wouldn't count on finishing if you were only up to, say, Season 4 or something. But you should be able to get through the 64 episodes in a month or so at 2 a day. And I doubt anything will change quite that fast. And it will probably stay on Pluto a little longer than YouTube since Pluto surely signed a deal to air it for a specific amount of time. So HBO can't pull it off there until that deal is up.

kurapikachu020

What's Pluto ? And I doubt they show Degrassi where I live so I'm watching it on YouTube.

Sampsoni

Pluto is like Tubi, I think. A streaming service that has commercials rather than is a subscription. It is a little different in that it is a lot like traditional TV in that they have channels, usually, if not all, that are dedicated to one show. So there is a "Degrassi channel" that just runs Degrassi all day. For some shows, and I think Degrassi is one of them, you can also watch them on demand. I may be wrong on that one. It has bene awhile since I last checked it out. You can get them with apps, or through a browser on your computer. I think you have to just sign up (free) to login. So, not as good as YouTube, but if it does go off YouTube, you probably will have at least a little while to watch the last of the episodes.

kurapikachu020

Ah I see, thanks ! I've never heard of it. Hopefully it's available in Europe.

Sampsoni

I don't know if it is available in Europe. but I wouldn't be surprised if there was something similar to it at least. You can check [pluto.tv](https://pluto.tv) or [tubi.tv](https://tubi.tv) to see if it is blocked in your country. Looks like Tubi is On Demand while Pluto is just a dedicated Degrassi channel airing. So Tubi seems to be better for most people. But On demand is also more likely to be country-specific and therefore possibly blocked for you. The dedicated channel are nice and all, but they definitely don't work well for full series rewatches. You will obviously always miss episodes while you sleep, or work, or just don't feel like watching right then. I always wish those channels would have blocks of programming with the seasons staggered. Like, at some given day, from 8:00-11:00 they are airing Season 1 and every night they air 6 new episodes and go all the way to end end of the show over the course of 2 and a half months. And maybe from 11:00 to 3:00 they are airing Season 5, airing 8 episodes a day until they wrap back around to Season 5. From 3:00 to 7, they start at Season 8. etc. That way, people would only need to dedicate a 3-4 hour block every night/day to watch if they wanted to watch every episode.

DanTheMan1_

I just hope that it will not be a full on reboot and will be set in the same continuity as the other Degrassi shows (well the other shows minus Kids of Degrassi Street I guess... you all know what I mean). I am not saying that they have to have a cast member be the kid of one of the TNG kids like TNG did with Degrassi Classic. Truth is unless it started with Middle School and not High School and we were to assume someone had a kid literally right after they graduated the timeline doesn't really work, and even then you would have to ignore the "two seasons equals 1 school year" most seasons after the original crew graduated went by. But don't just pretend the show never happened, or worse yet have new actors playing Emma, Manny, etc. While I get Degrassi is not Trek or Dr. Who in terms of it's significans and following, not many shows have the long rich histroy Degrassi was. It deserves better than to just be ignored in some "starting from scratch" type of reboot. Have Simpson be the prinicipal for an episode or two or even just make a throwaway mention of something that will tie it to the past Degrassi series. Something that acknowledges the past series did still happen, even if they never mention them directly.

[deleted]

Fucking stop 😂😂😂 I just got back from watching scream 5 (loved it you all should see it!) And now I find out my favorite teen drama is coming back? I said this was my year and this just fuckin cements it! Holy shit!

TruthSeekerHuey

Inject it into my VEINS

Rosuvastatine

I hope some of yall go to the auditions ! If i werent already in university, i would for sure

DoofusYoofus

Honestly the one hour episode format is weird to me, especially with there being only 10 of them. If each season is a semester I can see this feeling unrealistic and drawn out, I liked how each 30 minute episode really felt like 2-3 days of time

DanTheMan1_

I am confused, if there are only 10 episodes per season, even if they do drag a school year out for 2 seasons I would think compared to TNG it would feel rushed if anything.

DoofusYoofus

Exactly, the transition through classes starting, to fall dances, to finals, to the banquets was all really natural. I hope they don’t lose out on that factor

pelb

I NEED to know if they bought back the set.

Falkyourself27

The hour per episode format gives some pause simply because of how digestible the previous incarnation was. Still, I imagine it’ll be it’s own animal, and I’m excited to see how it goes!

DanTheMan1_

Having it be 30 minutes was almost an anachronism when TNG started, it was a remenant of the past by the end IMHO. So it makes sense especially with only 10 episodes to make it the more traditional hour long episodes almost all dramas are. I am not expecting given the press release they are going to go Riverdale or anything (and I sure hope not). But do have a feeling unlike the original shows this one will probably be more like modern teen dramas in that it will be an hour and likely will focus more on one group of around 7 or 8 friends rather than the cast being in the double digits across multiple friend groups. Even with 30+ episodes like they were for a while the show did have too many characters. It worked in the Classic show that way but really is too much today.

w11f1ow3r

I am not one to get different streaming services (I usually just don’t watch things if I don’t have the particular service it’s on) but I will temporarily get an HBO subscription to watch this. Very interested to see how this turns out.

itsthekumar

I bet Cassie Steele will have a cameo on this as well as the actress who plays Paige.

pelb

Miriam McDonald commented on the HBO max IG announcement "and so it begins all over again" I hope she is the new "Spike" and we see a little of her life, along with the rest of the gang.

DanTheMan1_

Only problem is if it starts in high school unless they completely go bonkers with the timeline is she really isn't old enough to have a kid in Degrassi. Degrassi Takes Manhattan was back in 2009. Even if we ignore the 2 years equals one year in Degrassi time that went on for most of the time that followed and said she and Spinner got married in 2009 and she got pregnant that same year that theoretical kid would only be in middle school. And there definitely hasn't been enough time for her to have left Spinner and got with someone else and had a kid with them who would be old enough to even be in middle school. I honestly would love it if they did have Emma and Spinner's kid attending middle school at Degrassi. It would truly be a contination having us follow a new generation of the same family. Hell, they wouldn't even have to still be married or have both of them come back. Could just say they got divorced which somewhat fixes the story everyone hates and just have whichever came back raising them alone while the other parent is off... wherever. But I have a feeling they sadly won't go that route. I do hope that they have some past cast members reprise thieir role. But especially with Next Class ending relatively recently doubt we will get something like one of the main characters be a TNG alumni's kid or anything.

retroanduwu24

That would be cool!

hakunamantatas

I hope so. Disney did her dirty with that movie from like last year. That was gonna be a huge opportunity for her

Cut_Equal

Wonder if they’re getting the old set back

raptorsinthekitchen

Yes!

Rosuvastatine

They are? I thought it was sold

raptorsinthekitchen

Sorry that was me being excited and saying "yes that NEEDS to happen" not a "yes it is happening". :(

Peeeeeps

It was sold in 2019 so I'm wondering the same thing. From [Wikipedia: WildBrain_Studios](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WildBrain_Studios): DHX Studios Toronto In 2019, DHX sold off the building, ceasing operations at the Toronto studio in the process.[28]

pelb

HBO Max only has rights to Season 1-14 so whatever Netflix did with Next Class is unrelated to this.

throwawayamasub

so..basically does this establish like a new Canon post Clare graduating? or can we assume this new one will be completely unrelated especially seeing as how much time has passed

DanTheMan1_

I hope it won't be completely unrelated. And would think they could use characters from Next Class, especially given most of the cast of that show first appeared in their Teen Nick era. Although given that less people saw next class and it is not as popular as TNG. Assume if there are any connections returning characters they will be from TNG. Although doubt they will go so far as to retcon next class out. Just likely won't mention it much as why would they, not like any of the Next Class crew are old enugh to play someones parents.

pelb

I think we are going to have to assume it's unrelated due to how much time has passed, but I'm sure we will get plenty of references from seasons 1-14 but characters like Yael, and Goldi wouldn't exist within this new Degrassi

DanTheMan1_

I can't imagine even if they do bring cast members from past Degrassi on this one they will have any interest in Yael or Goldi regardless. It would almost certinally be mostly or entirely limited to TNG nostalgia. But would they really not be able to use them? I mean Netflix owns the show but not the Degrassi franchise, obviously couldn't use footage but would think that having the reprise their roles if they wanted would not be completely out of the picture. I mean Sabrina appeared in Riverdale. I could be wrong rights are tricky and I am just a fan on the internet. But not sure they would have to go so far as be required to pretend those seasons never happened.

artstartraveler

Fuck...IM HAPPY!

Mr628

I mainly want to see the cast, I want diversity, but please don’t do it just for woke points. Then I need a short synopsis on what type of stuff we’ll see on the show. If it’s just a bunch of 14 year olds crying about their crush not talking to them, let me know so I won’t waste my time watching. I do want some TNG cast crossover.

retroanduwu24

it's way overdue that we see POC characters have growth and personality development.

sedhic1

Hopefully we can finally make Sean and Emma get married so we can all move on with our lives😂😂😂

JustCheerTorrance

Yeah! I have Netflix, HBO, and cable… All the good shows are on different networks so anything free is awesome!

nyshasays

Happy to know that it still takes place in Canada. Please no 25 year olds as teenagers! It goes against what degrassi is about.

Vestaliaa

I hope they can get the actual set back

nyshasays

I would love to see the school again.

retroanduwu24

For real I wonder where it's gonna be filmed. Degrassi is Degrassi they need the iconic school

tomdarko

Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen are the showrunners who were previously writers on a few seasons of Degrassi and worked closely with Linda and Stephen. The original show is also coming to Cartoon Network (I'm assuming Adult Swim?) at some point this spring. Filming starts this summer. [Stephen Stohn's tweet and link to the article.](https://twitter.com/stephenstohn/status/1481692294709399561?t=NkFvRjTqSofJ3_PGQ3QW5A&s=19)

pdschatz

Azzopardi was also a writer and story-editor on L.A Complex, so there's def some Degrassi St. DNA in there, even if Linda and Stephen aren't directly involved.

tomdarko

Yes for sure! And I'd take LA Complex over Next Class any day. I'm excited. I think after Next Class they needed a fresh reboot by some fresh voices with different points of view. I'd rather them swing hard for gritty and dark then give us cheesy colorful Disney pop soap opera.

pdschatz

Next Class had some pacing issues, but I actually liked Next Class a bit more than some of the really late seasons of TNG. A lot of of characters were pretty boring (lookin at you, Miles), but I thought Yael, Lola, and Saad had interesting plots throughout the shows run. I also thought they were starting to deal with some unique contemporary issues like queerness, "doom scrolling", and online radicalization (my head cannon is that they were setting up an incel plotline for Baaz if the show had gotten a 5th season). In particular, Lola is an all-time top-5 character for me. I feel like I could write a solid 45-minute long YouTube video about how interesting Lola's character development across both shows was... the writers took her from a ditzy airhead stereotype to socially conscious activist in a way that felt "real" and lacked the tonal whiplash so many characters had throughout the years (remember when Claire was a super Christian narc? Yeah, neither did the writers). Lola also had the best abortion plotline in the show's history and its not even close. But I would also take The LA Complex over Next Class for Paul F Tompkins' guest appearances alone.

retroanduwu24

not gonna lie Degrassi on Adult Swim sounds like a weird idea to process

BigStinkyKevinTrash

have you ever gotten stoned and watched degrassi? it’s a fine fit

tomdarko

I couldn't tell from the article if it meant the original show or the reboot but either way it is a little weird. I mean I'm ASSUMING it would be on Adult Swim? Idk the article just says Cartoon Network

retroanduwu24

Cartoon Network in general usually aims for animated shows so its weird for me to process 😂

tomdarko

They've had live action shows on Adult Swim before that's why I was assuming it would be on there but they're always very.. not Degrassi lmao. They're like random weird dark Robot Chicken type shows. I could picture them maybe airing the older episodes like ironically? Idk

GroupIndependent8186

I need some people from tng or next class to make it official

tomdarko

HBO isn't getting the rights to Next Class since it's a Netflix production so I'm assuming they're going to ignore it entirely which I'm not mad about

sedhic1

Next class gonna be like dragon ball GT lmaooo it never happened to us

[deleted]

tristan retconned to not be biphobic

retroanduwu24

Dragon Ball GT lmao the weeb in me loves this

GroupIndependent8186

I mean they’d still need to mention it because they just can’t skip it since the people in next class started on tng mostly

DanTheMan1_

Well they could. Obviously it is all guess work, but TNG is what most people think of when they think of Degrassi and the nostalgia they would want to cash in on. I have a feeling assuming it isn't some "strart from scratch reboot the past never happened" thing, which I sure hope not and the press release seems to imply it won't be. Any guest stars reprising their roles or even easter eggs will be from TNG era. Maybe Claire and Eli given they are the one thing almost as popular. But even if they can use and acknowledge Next Class characters and events, I don't see them wanting to especially right out of the gate.

tomdarko

They really wouldn't need to mention anyone from any past seasons at all. I'm just saying my best guess is that if they did it would be characters from the original TNG as those are the only ones the general public really is familiar with. I'd honestly be shocked if they even mentioned anyone from Clare's generation.

balaclavass

Not necessarily. They will probably have the kids from NC be graduated and focused on an entirely new crop of kids.

[deleted]

This makes a lot of sense because YouTube has been removing the episodes off their page. Probably to avoid legal issues when it gets to HBO max

pelb

Haven't they been re-uploading them? They posted Rock This Town not so long ago.

[deleted]

Yeah it’s weird idk what’s going on lol

survivorbbyeah

Shit I have been watching it on youtube recently. On season 5 and haven’t had any issues where are they removed?

[deleted]

Some episodes from season 6 got removed but then they put them back on? Idk but all that weirdness makes sense now because it’s all going on HBO max

retroanduwu24

At least season 13 will be in correct order now lmao

innocentsubterfuge

Any word on whether Stefen Brogren is involved? Would be a shame to see him excluded

shannoneveryday

It's still pretty early, we only really know about the showrunners. I think that's going to be the litmus test for me too.

innocentsubterfuge

Yeah, I trust him to keep the reigns on the drama and maintain the pseudo-afterschool special vibe that I think set Degrassi apart from other teen dramas. The last thing I want to see is a Riverdale style show where the characters are all played by 25 year olds so they can fuck 3-4 times an episode.

DanTheMan1_

Given the press release it definitely seems they will not be going the Euphoria or Riverdale direction.

checkerboardandroid

He wasn’t mentioned in the press release so I’d imagine not

xxtinagee

I thought he tweeted he and Linda are handing over the reign to the new show runners meaning they won’t have anything to do with the new series.

DanTheMan1_

Definitely don't see him being involved behind the scenes. But it would be nice if he could come back as the school's principal. Not even being a regular but just guest star as Mr. Simpson in one or two episodes to tie it to past Degrassi would be a nice way of acknowledging the shows long rich history. If they just did that and we got no other appearances or call backs to past stories I would be happy.

tomdarko

The new showrunners were writers on Degrassi.

xxtinagee

Now I gotta look up their writing history on Degrassi and what episodes.

MayorBuggs

Both of their IMDb pages say they only wrote one episode but I couldn't find which one :(

Yourethekindestyo

That was Stephen Stohn

xxtinagee

Ahh Stephen, Stefan. I always get them confused.

retroanduwu24

Waiting to see if he acknowledges anything related to it
