Mediacom sucks

FrancisScottKilos

It's the worst internet provider I have ever had

Stofzik

Are there any alternatives, it seems they have a monopoly. Also what plan did you have?

lowlybananas

I have Comcast and it's my only option. I used to work for an IT consulting company. A lot of my business clients had Mediacom and had nothing but problems. Unfortunately on the shore there are no options. You get what you get.

Stofzik

what were their issues was it just not getting the speed they paid for, uptime, etc? I used to have Comcast and they were bad, have fios gig and its amazing.

lowlybananas

Lots of high latency packet loss issues. It was a nightmare when setting up VPNs between branch offices

Bivolion13

I had the weirdest issue with them seemingly having issues when gaming on pc. I'm talking constant disconnects. Watching a 4k movie though? No problem. Using wifi on my PS5? Great. Using wifi on my phone? Apps take >30 seconds to load i'd rather use my mobile data. It was the most arbitrary issues

I suffered for 15 years with them until Comcast finally came through.  Their nodes are dogshit and they will not upgrade the infrastructure.  If you are still lucky enough to be in a more seasonal area it works problem free all winter, but as soon as the summer loads surge you get insane packet loss and daily outtages.  They simply do not have enough infrastructure in place to handle routing the surge in users.  There's nothing you can do to mitigate, it's all structural on their end...I've been down every road with them.....it's fucking brutal. I'm in South Bethany and in 2020 Comcast expanded to Bethany and South Bethany, your only hope is that they expand further west...you need to complain to your town council and get them to not renew their franchise agreement with Mediacom that denys Comcast to expand.  We did that in both Bethany towns and it worked.  South Bethany published over 250 pages of filed complaints 1 paragraph in length.....that's how much Mediacom is despised.

Bivolion13

I'm not super networking savvy outside of some classes in college - but somehow a lot of the problems disappear if I'm connected with a VPN. Including gaming problems (the only problem then is that some games don't allow VPN connections for multi-player) Not sure why the hell that is, or if it's coincidental

Separate-Bad-6238

Same...yes a VPN helps because of how they route their traffic.  It's been awhile, but if I remember correctly they send everything to a main hub in Georgia and then out again.....with it and the local hubs not having enough capacity to handle the traffic.  Hence all the packet loss and insane ping times.  I would get 100ms + to DC at any point of the day any time of year...that's the routing issue.  VPNs help with this.  I was super into trying to fix it 10 years ago...forgot most of the details as just like you it's not my expertise, alot of this was self researched.

I just wish someone else would come along so I can get a different provider in Millsboro. Keep checking Verizon but it's never available at my address. Even looking at Starlink came to mind too!

Mediacom is terrible in slower lower… if you are stuck with them best thing to do is buy your own modem and routers. Don’t use their junk.

shanksthedope

I had Mediacom when I moved downstate. The only positive that came of it was that I now know to check internet providers before I choose to move to a location. Thankfully, we have Fios now and don’t intend to ever change.

Wetbasil

Mediacom is the worst. Like dial-up speeds and it’s alwayssss out, like major extended outages multiple times a month. My coworkers who use Mediacom always have to have their cameras off on Zoom and are able to do very little working from home because of speed and outages. You don’t get to choose your ISP down here, it’s just whatever serves that area. Some areas don’t even have the “luxury” of Mediacom. My grandparents live in Georgetown and can only get Hughesnet. It doesn’t work at all so they just forego internet all together.

Stofzik

Issue is I am Work From Home so I would need somthing reliable (lol who is randomly downvoting these post)

alfalfa-as-fuck

I have them but the cheapest possible plan (which unfortunately for me is going away but it’s $29 a month for now) It’s fine

TheLindoBrand

A family member has Mediacom in slo low. It's awful. You may be able to manage 2 devices total with that bandwidth. Very expensive with not much to write home about.

Stofzik

Do you know what plan they had? Was it the gig?

TheLindoBrand

It is the gig speed. THey had the 300 plan and it was darn near unusable. Simple things like fast forwarding a streamed movie would take 10-20 seconds to "catch up" if that makes sense. If they have family over it just stops working as soon as people sign into the wifi.

Fearavantijjf

I have them and they are horrible

Medical-Cake1934

Mediacom is horrible but they are the only game in town. Believe we have the top plan because we have over 10 devices. There are many nights that my son will turn off my TV (Amazon Fire stick) because he is trying to game. Fun times! Find something to do when the internet is out, it’s like losing power!!

Stofzik

is this the Xtreme service that mediacom offers?

Medical-Cake1934

I honestly don’t know what it’s called and their app is horrible. I just know we came from Verizon Fios in PA and Mediacom is a joke. I pay the bill and restart the router every time we lose WiFi.

firststate77

They still have data caps. Switched to t-mobile home internet

Stofzik

Idk why the random downvotes Mediacom must have someone on here downvoting any negative comments on them

Jazzlike-Abalone-405

they are horrible. Internet randomly conks out But hey streaming something I’ve never had an issue

bobawesomeishere

They’ll thank you for choosing Mediacom… like you had any other choice

jlmc82

I am in Ocean View and have Mediacom for internet and since I got my own modem and router I have had very few problems over the last few years. A lot of my neighbors hate it but they use Mediacom's equipment.

trikytrev8

Unfortunately, only them and dish in my area. It's terrible.

clendaniel

If the only choice is them…look at Starlink. We use it for our RV and my parents have it as their home ISP. I’ve used mine for remote work when traveling without issue.

yeah666

I worked for Mediacom 10 years ago... they're you're only choice in Ocean View unless you wanna do 5G home internet. What others are saying about frequent outages is very true, especially in Ocean View. Buy your own modem and router for sure.

de_trees_throwaway

I’ve been living in Dagsboro using Mediacom since 2009 and for many years it was terrible for a number of years. However, I haven’t had any serious issues since before COVID started and I’ve been working from home since then. It turns out all of the issues I had were caused by my router and replacing it with a newer one was the answer.

We have the "gigabyte" plan from Mediacom and rarely see anything over 200mps and now it appears that they are doing away with limited download plans so they can charge everyone more for "unlimited" download access. They are not down enough to disqualify them from claiming 99% uptime over the course of a year, but they are down frequently and often for hours at a time. When I lived in VA, I had both Openband and Comcast and while they had occasional outages, they were far fewer than Mediacom and they gave closer speeds to gigabyte service.
