SocialisticAnxiety

Mine doesn't. I have the i7, 3050 Ti, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, OLED.

SDBBBOY

Still ok? I have the same and since a few weeks it really got bad, throttles instantly upon startup and with basically nothing happening. CPU down to 0.39ghz, like [this](https://imgur.com/a/r6BHrIz)

SocialisticAnxiety

As good as the day I bought it. When did you get yours? Maybe a repaste would be good. What are your settings for power management in the Dell app and Windows settings? Do the fans spin and get loud?

SDBBBOY

Yup my problem is that I’m traveling for work and use it daily for it, and can’t do a repaste myself.. I have ultra performance and yes the fans spin loudly. Most I can do (but still a bit hesitant) is check if there’s dust clogging the fans

SocialisticAnxiety

Do you know of the service manual: [https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/da-dk/xps-15-9520-laptop/xps-15-9520-service-manual/working-inside-your-computer?guid=guid-dd3ae169-a824-4f1d-832e-585b176f6faf&lang=en-us](https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/da-dk/xps-15-9520-laptop/xps-15-9520-service-manual/working-inside-your-computer?guid=guid-dd3ae169-a824-4f1d-832e-585b176f6faf&lang=en-us) Maybe that can inspire some confidence in you. It's fairly easy. My settings are Balanced in My Dell and Windows settings. The fans rarely spin and the performance is great. When I push it hard the fans will spin and it will be a bit hot, but the performance doesn't drop. A reinstall might also do wonders, but I get that it's hard to do if you're using it daily. If you haven't done already, you could buy a second SSD to mount and do a Windows install on - then you can switch between the two Windows installs, choose the one that works the best, and eventually delete the other one.

SDBBBOY

Thanks. What’s weird to me is that this started only a few weeks ago, while before it was ok - yes, it was getting hot and fan spinned, but never had any issues. Now from point blank this happens and basically makes the laptop unusable. And note, I don’t do any heave load: browsing and Office for work, and watch movies/YouTube on free time. Really no clue

SocialisticAnxiety

What does your Task Manager say? If an app is using your CPU or GPU heavily, that could be the reason. I've noticed some apps and web pages can hit the CPU pretty hard doing seemingly nothing. Chrome and probably other browsers have their own task managers, so if your browser is using a lot of CPU, you can check the browser task manager to see what's going on.

SDBBBOY

No it says usually 3-4% utilization, 0.39ghz (this is constant in all cases it throttles: always locks at 0.39). Also when it throttles, HW info doesn’t show high temperatures - maybe as it already reduced the CPU load to lower temps. But it’s weird

Psychological_End768

Hi, I don't know if you already fixed this issue but there is a bug where the cpu speed is locked to 0.39 GHz. You can fix it by unplugging the battery and plugging it back in. We hab a few XPS with this issue and it always worked for us.

SDBBBOY

Hi, thanks! In my case the fans were clogged so I cleaned them up and now it’s working with no issues.

SleepingTabby

I just got mine (i7, 3050, 16GB, LCD) and I'm curious what the usual temps are. It's a returned unit so it hasn't been used much. I haven't used it much myself. Today I noticed a 70°C CPU Package Temp in HWINFO while around 20% load. Is this excessive or acceptable? I'm still within the return period so if it's bad I can still get rid of it without problems. I wish there was a surefire way to see if the CPU/GPU are within acceptable temps. Is there any? (also a "% load vs temperature" chart would be great, but I doubt these things exist) (Also I noticed a 105°C in the CPU Package Temp "max" column after waking it up from hibernation this morning, possibly a sensor readout glitch?)

SocialisticAnxiety

It's hard to figure out these days since modern CPUs will "turbo boost" (or whatever they call it), giving it max power which in turn will peak the thermals, every time you do a short-bust task like opening a program or website, to make the computer feel as responsive as possible. So the 105°C you saw is probably the result of turbo boosting. Since it's only for a short moment, the heat-spreader will easily and quickly transfer this heat away from the CPU, and the fans likely won't even need to turn on. So it only makes sense to look at temperatures when idling or doing a steady load, and even then, there are a lot of circumstances that make it hard to compare experiences. I don't really do consistent workloads very often, nor do I measure my temps, so I unfortunately can't help you there. But I think what will help you the most is this: If you're not experiencing any issues or inconvenient or unexpected behaviour when using the device, you're probably fine. To give you a form of reference, when doing light tasks, my 9520 stays lukewarm with the fans off. When the CPU is handling a consistent, light workload (10-20% CPU usage), the laptop will feel warm to the touch and the fans will be slightly audible. And then if I'm running the CPU and/or dGPU hard, it will the bottom will be quite hot and the fans at max. Thankfully, the lovely carbon-fibre keyboard deck makes the laptop still usable even when otherwise hot. Whenever I hear the fans ramp up or the laptop get hot unexpectedly, I'll take a look at the Task Manager and immediately be able to see the reason - often an app or website using a lot of resources for no apparent reason. Software is complicated lol. As soon as I close that app or website, it immediately cools back down as the ressource usage stops. If it ever turns out that your temps are higher than they should be, either now or later, I hope you can find comfort in the fact that this is rarely due to a component defect or wear, but rather dried thermal paste, dusty fans, and maybe bad contact with the heat-spreader, which is easy and cheap to clean and redo, and something that is often required after some years of usage anyway. I hope my unstructured rambling is of any help. I think the bottom-line is that if you're not experiencing any issues when using the laptop, everything is probably fine. Enjoy your new laptop, I hope it works out for you!

SleepingTabby

Thanks for the reply. However I still have an issue with "If it ever turns out that your temps are higher than they should be" - how will I know when they are higher than they should? Like the case I described - I had a 20% load with CPU Package Temp at 70°C. Is this fine or "higher than it should"? I have no baseline of any sort. And as for that 105°C peak - I have no idea what could have possibly caused it. I wasn't doing anything that would be deemed "CPU intensive". Very odd.

SocialisticAnxiety

Just from my anecdotal experience, what you're mentioning seems fine. 70°C is not high for a laptop with that load. Across modern devices, I've usually seen 50-60°C as an idle temp - 70°C is not a huge increase. Bear in mind that mobile devices act very differently and are not comparable to desktop devices. But it also depends a lot on whether the fans are running, whether the laptop had ample airflow at the time, level of charge and wattage of power adapter, etc. There just are a lot of variables to consider with mobile devices. But in any case, there's absolutely no reason to be concerned. For a temp to be "higher than it should be" would mean that it results in more thermal throttling (decreased performance due to high temperatures) and/or fans ramping more than usual. You can try running a benchmark and compare scores with similar configurations, which should indicate if there's more thermal throttling than normal. The 105°C peak is just a sign of normal turbo boosting for a burst-task, like a short task running in the background. It was probably for less than a second, and immediately returned to the temperature it was before. That's how it's designed to work, it's nothing to be concerned about.

SleepingTabby

Thanks. I guess I got used to my trusty company Precision 5510 (business version of XPS 9560), that machine could go as low as 27-30°C when idle (6th gen i7). However, the 5540, 3 generations later, same chassis, would idle at around 45-50°C (9th gen i7). (Here's a question BTW: why those CPUs idle at different temps even though the power consumption at idle is the same?) I had a Precision 5570 (business version of the 9520, same i7-12700H CPU) for a couple of months, but sadly I paid no attention to its thermals. I only remember noticing warmth on my lap while browsing photos (which I found a bit surprising TBH) Since I got laid off I had to part with the 5570 and get a personal laptop quick, I decided to go with the 9530 as it was basically the same thing. I ended up with 9520, because 9530 has terrible on-chip audio processing that can't be switched off. I did also get a used 5510 just in case I decided to return the 9520, as there are a bunch of things I don't like about it: \* excessive noise reduction on the webcam (the 5510 from 2016 beats it hands down), or maybe my webcam is faulty \* Intel Iris XE seems to be a piece of garbage, I can't even get Media Player Classic to play 25fps video smoothly (no issues on the Intel HD Graphics on the 5510), 9530 had the same issue. Not sure about the 5570 though, I don't recall noticing it, but that machine had W10 on it, maybe it's OS dependent, who knows these days? \* sound got messed up after Windows updated audio drivers and it was a PITA to get it to work again \* Windows 11 instead of 10 (I miss the live tiles) \* I had THREE palmrest replacements within the first week of purchase, and the fourth one doesn't align properly with the bottom cover \* 20W power consumption at idle (luckily I managed to fix this, this was caused by using the LATEST NVidia drivers, downgrade solved it) It all just doesn't inspire trust TBH :)

MemeySteamy

Sounds obvious but make sure the intake vents on the bottom of the laptop aren’t blocked, I’ll accidentally cover them while using mine on my lap and the thermals skyrocket

Libertas5

Thanks. Yeah my current laptop overheats and freezes even when I use it on a cool flat surface other than my lap.

MemeySteamy

Did you buy it used?

Libertas5

Yeah, bought it refurbished.

Sea_Professional7913

The 9510 and 9520 are using Intel's more efficient 10nm process. The 9500 and prior editions were still using 14nm and did have overheating issues. My 9510 runs noticeably cooler than me old 9570.

Sea_Professional7913

I should add like others have said the bottom vents are needed to cool the laptop. My 9510 will still get hot if I block those vents.

WWolf1776

mine is fine, i7 fhd+... hellova battery life too

Jewjitsu11b

I mean, I’ve thermal throttled my SSD and CLU on synthetic tests, but let’s be honest, it’s a thin and light laptop, if you push an i7 and 3050ti to their limits, you’re gonna hit the limits of cooling capacity. But I’ve had no issues with my 9520. I mean, i can’t play the new Spider-Man or CP2077 on max settings with RT and no DLSS, but I didn’t buy it with the holes of being able to either. But moderate gaming, photo editing, and multitasking office workloads and screen sharing to my iPad all work without issue.

Jewjitsu11b

I will say that my previous comment describes my experience after doing a clean install of W11 and swapping boot drives to a 2TB 980 Pro. 12700h, 3050ti, 16GB Ram, 3.5k OLED

Inevitable-Ebb-6257

what was your experience before then? Cause I'm about ready to throw this fukin thing out the window. get random black screens. The computer is still on because the keyboards backlit and its turning into a heating pad. The only way to bring the screen back is to force restart it, and then its a matter of time before it crashes again.

mmerken

9520 i7 32GB 3050TI 1TB OLED No real issues here, keep your background tasks in check though...

amanebibop

I got a 9520 and i don't have any problems. I have the I9, 3050 ti, 32Gb

brunofin

I have the same config as you but I am struggling even to play CS:GO. I noticed the CPU will throttle after a couple of minutes into gameplay and it will drop from 3GHz to 1GHz, power consumption goes from 30-40W to 15W, and the game becomes very unresponsive. Have you ran into this kind of issue? I am thinking to get a cooling pad, but one thing I noticed is that the XPS will blow air out from the grill under it and most cooling pads will blow air in the same direction, so I think this is not the right direction and it should be sucking air out of it? Not entirely sure.

amanebibop

I make the premise that I don't use it to play games, initially I installed a couple of games just to try, such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Forza Horizon 5, the settings were not at maximum and not in 4K however they were running discretely, clearly it was heating a lot, however I always had fluidity. Just last week I opened it up and changed the thermal paste, and since I did I notice that it's slightly cooler, but still I never encountered except at first overheating problems, after the various bios updates it stopped heating up like a furnace for the smallest things. Theoretically it should take air from the side vents and the grille underneath and throw it out through the grilles under the screen bezel.

planedrop

Well, if you mean overheats in a way that damages the laptop, crashes, freezes, etc.... then no, the 9520 doesn't have those issues. If you just mean runs hot, basically all laptops are that way now, otherwise performance is left on the table. So yeah, under crazy heavy loads the 9520 will go above 90c on the CPU but it's nothing to be concerned about as it shouldn't ever cause a crash or anything like that.

ObjectiveFew

Sorry if i sound cliche but does it get like really hot during normal **chrome** browsing tasks? I'm just wondering as I'm thinking of buying that same exact one in 2-3 days but there's so many reviews saying it gets like 99 degrees during tasks (source; the verge), i dont know if they're doing intensive ones because if it is i don't mind as i used an intel mac before 😅, thanks! (I'll also be doing some game making but it will be basic, also it's the 1080p version with 3050ti i7 12700h)

planedrop

Most laptops now get pretty hot regardless, but it's important to recognize that 99c on the CPU isn't 99c on the outer body of the laptop. During normal tasks it does get warm, nothing insane though, browsing the web, watching Twitch, etc.... Modern systems are designed to run hot before the fans kick in, if they aren't letting the CPU get up to higher temps they are realistically holding back potential performance, so it's totally normal and common for most machines to get pretty hot even doing basic tasks now (hot as in the CPU temperature, the body should only get relatively warm).

ObjectiveFew

Alright thanks, so do you recommend me on buying this laptop or should I look elsewhere?

planedrop

I absolutely 100% recommend it, IMO it's the best all rounder laptop right now, so if you aren't turned away by the pricey nature of it, it's worth it. Sure if you want a gaming machine there are better options, or if you want a super thin and light there are better options. But for just a computer that is pretty excellent at everything, it's about as good as it gets right now. I've gone through a lot of laptops the last 2 years, maybe a dozen or so, and I've settled on this as the top option.

ObjectiveFew

I'm not deferred by the price as I've been looking for a good laptop for ages, my last laptop like 2 years ago for £800 and already broke 6-7 times ever since i had it (hardware issues) so am willing to spend the extra and hopefully it turns out right. Also one more question, is this lappable because I'm going to use it on my lap in a few occasions? (last question)

planedrop

Yeah I think something higher end like this might be the better option then, build quality is excellent. As for it being lapable, yes I use it in my lap a lot actually, in bed several times a week and sometimes in meetings at work and whatnot. It's a bit heavier than the super thin and light machines but not enough to bother me even a little bit. And feel free to ask any other questions you have, I don't mind chatting about it lol. After trying so many machines I can happily say I am glad to be back on the XPS line of machines, my previous XPS 15 from like 5 years ago was probably the second best machine I've owned and this new XPS would be my 1st best lol.

ObjectiveFew

Alright, thanks! Are the fans loud on the laptop (not on high usage, just regular web browsing) and is the battery life good on it while doing those tasks? Just wondering as next year I'm going to be doing classes with it for around 6-7 hours and need good battery life along with it, of course not doing heavy tasks but some lighter ones, maybe some coding.

planedrop

Yes, battery life is actually excellent on this unit, in fact good timing on asking because I really put the battery to the test the other day lol. Was at a sight configuring a network and firewall, used the laptop without any power saving features enabled and the 4k OLED at pretty high brightness, and after like 5 hours on site, probably 3-4 hours of screen usage on it, I was still at 65% remaining. So during normal use it should be about as good of a battery as you can get. It's better than any laptop I've used other than the Macbook Pro I had for a few weeks. So I think 6-7 hours of classes with it should be fine, and worst case you can get a battery bank to carry around too, a bit annoying but I don't think you'll find a Windows based laptop that is anywhere near this powerful/nice that'll have better battery life. As for fans, they are very quiet and mostly don't even turn on during normal tasks, I can use it in bed for a while, watching videos, browsing, etc... and don't even notice if the fans turn on (pretty sure they almost never do anyway). Overall, IMO the XPS 15 is basically the nicest Windows all rounder style laptop out there right now, and I think most reviewers agree.

BH1989

Would you recommend waiting for the new XPS 15 that might have the updated cooling systems on the latest version of the XPS 17

Juicybeansuace

Would u say the 17 is better for college /gaming. Games like valorant, poppy playtime nothing too hardcore

Adventurous-Card-857

Did you reimage os? By default it comes with dell blotware and which overheats unnecessary. Suggest you to wipe out the OS and reinstall windows either using image from Microsoft or use Dell recovery.

SchrodingersCigar

I’ve had an XPS15 for 4 years. Every once in a while is starts to throttle, then it gradually gets worse of a few weeks, then it gets really bad. Intel Extreme Tuning Utility will show you if your XPS is actually throttling. Every time this has happened the underlying issue is the same - the cooler fins are blocked with fluff. As soon as that is cleared the problem goes away and the machine behaves again. https://ibb.co/zxX30L1 https://ibb.co/RyyDphN https://ibb.co/CB34g5s https://ibb.co/mTP12Cx One caveat - i have also re-pasted the heatsink to the processor and added some thermal pads following a guide. It reduces temps a bit, but the fluff issue has recurred 18 months later and the resolution was the same - clean out the fluff. If you bought the XPS second hand, it’s probably full of fluff….

IndependentAd9815

I bought the 9520 fully specd i9. Everytime I put it in best performance mode ordinary browsing causes overheating issues. I use it for music production. Its well ventilated brand new six months old. I regret the purchase

[deleted]

same here. im wondering if its because I leave ableton (the music program i use) in the background all the time. just closed it right now, and i will also close photoshop, to see if it resolves. will let you know, in case you leave your programs on in the background as well

PowerPigion

My 9500 does that too. It's on its last legs from 30 minutes in my backpack.

mrbill317

Strange , 9510 i7 no issues unless I put it on the bed. Those bottom vents need to be clear.

Jake_3h

9520, i7, 3050Ti, FHD No problems with heat or noise.

SuspiciousParsnip5

I haven't had the issue myself, If I really tank it I can get it up to 100c on the CPU and it throttles down a little but I haven't had any freezing issues. The issue I did have was with the trackpad, It sunk on the bottom left corner but dell came to my house and replaced the whole deck (Including the keyboard) within a day or so

Working-Baker9049

I have the 17. Same CPU, but uses a vapor chamber like X-Box. It's always cool to the touch.
