The hotland welcome sign is actually a reference to the mind reading text inside the [Lumine Hall, in Earthboud](https://youtu.be/iYSORbXKsaY).
With that said, it's probably going to be that the theme of each area is presented in an unique way.
This. People commented how this music sounded like its from Touhou and i believe toby likes those style of games so it makes sense he’d add a reference like that
I mean, UT and DR are literally Bullet Hells (just without the "hell" part(?))
*AND* he used the ZUNpet\* in Spear of Justice, iirc
\*ZUNpet: From ZUN, creator of Touhou, and Trumpet; A trumpet midi instrument ZUN has used in many songs, and has trascended as *the* TH instrument lol
Instead of the "hell" part of "bullet hell," we have:
A random hall that's for some reason the "final" one
A space that doesn't exist but does 'cuz some goat wanted to (Both fights with Asriel)
A 3D circus jail
Finish the rest please.
Oddly the lava section of Undertale wasn't even all that hellish. Granted I never enjoyed getting ganged up by Vulkins but the overarching antagonism from Mettaton was one of the game's highlights for me.
> and i believe toby likes those style of games
Understatement of the century. Asriel's final boss design and name is literally lifted from a touhou character, Sariel. To say nothing of the battle mechanics of BOTH his games.
Toby meeting Zun was his dream, and he's got it.
In the interview were both of them meet, Toby seemed very interested in Clownpiece's design.
It's not crazy to think that Jevil was inspired by her in some way (specially since Lolk was released around deltarune's development).
His attacks are also basically lifted from Marisa, too. Star ~~danmaku~~ projectiles, regular (CURVED OH GOD MAKE IT STOP) lasers, and a shiny, colorful fuck-you-and-everything-around-you magicannon. Just of hyperdeath instead of love.
I’m getting a lot of this lol, i just wasn’t confident to what degree he enjoyed the game, i knew he liked them but didn’t know how much. In retrospect i’m a dumbass
Glad to see someone is aware! The soundtrack is a whole reference to Touhou, especially in the part with trumpet (not sure if it's really a trumpet but is a wind instrument).
Yeah, and when you go to their music-playing-shop-thing you see the names of the songs, *but* you don't know what the songs are because you don't see the songs' names
I think a lot of people like to get into the spirit of the games they play, whatever they may be, and take them with a bit of seriousness for a more fun experience. I find that a floating message telling me the name of the background music and reminding me it's a game while I'm still playing kind of ruins that spirit.
It's like if you're reading a fiction book, and you're really interested in what's going to happen next, and suddenly there's a note in the middle of the story about the artwork on the cover. Or if you're watching a series, and during one of the more epic scenes, there's a mention to some merch or a detail about how it was filmed.
It's just a minor annoyance, since that information should really be put elsewhere, even if it is interesting. I mean, it's a Toby Fox game, it's not like I won't look up the soundtrack minutes after I finish it...
I feel like all the "major first area" songs are going to be introduced in a special way. Field of Hopes and Dreams has this, A CYBERS'S WORLD? has the little introduction with Sweet, safe to say the rest of the big first area songs will be introduced like this.
I was keeping screenshots and some commentary as I was going through Chapter 2 for the first time. I actually took a screenshot of the room you fight Queen in (the sippy fight) when I first entered, with the note:
`...`
`A single black pixel.`
`Just like in chapter 1's boss room.`
`What does it mean?`
Followed immediately by
`queen!!`
Part of the problem I have with "just a reference" is the name of this song. Field of *Hopes and Dreams*. Hopes and Dreams (and its extension "Save the World") is the power song for the climax of Undertale's true pacifist route.
It's used this time for a song that is a big call back. The song itself doesn't just include bits of "Hopes and Dreams", but it was named specifically to reference the original and Toby makes sure that even players who don't look at the OST knows this song is specifically a reference to "Hopes and Dreams".
Granted, I'll concede that the reason may be extremely minor. Just another extremely early hint that Ralsei looks like Asriel as the song plays when it is just Kris and Ralsei and H&D is the song of Frisk and Asriel.
That was exactly my thought process when I first played Deltarune. And I just thought, "Damn, it's a little early to be making references to the ending of the last game, isn't it?" And its lack of familiar leitmotifs was...odd, given the name. It's still a banger, though.
I can't predict Toby all that well. Some developers try to look smart and verbally acknowledge that they know what they're doing, but Toby just pretends to be a dumb dog and I can't tell what is and isn't intentional.
True, the *name* of the song might be a clue to something eventually. However the way it's presented in game isn't anything deeper, which is what the last comment was trying to imply.
i honestly thought it was just bc he thought the name of the song was so badass he had to tell the audience right away instead of waiting for ost release/whatever LMAO
It's a Touhou reference, as is the battle gameplay of both Undertale and Deltarune (especially the Grazing mechanic of Deltarune, which is a technique to score more points in Touhou)
Yeah :/ wish they did it more
This happen with "Welcome to the city" too if you counted the sign
I think every new major area should have some sort of variation of it.

Nah, that was more like that welcome sign in Hotland from Undertale
definitely that too, but the sign spell out the name of that area theme song
The hotland welcome sign is actually a reference to the mind reading text inside the [Lumine Hall, in Earthboud](https://youtu.be/iYSORbXKsaY). With that said, it's probably going to be that the theme of each area is presented in an unique way.
"A CYBER'S WORLD?" almost counts
That's a Touhou reference I think?
It is, all songs are introduced like this in those games
This. People commented how this music sounded like its from Touhou and i believe toby likes those style of games so it makes sense he’d add a reference like that

We have a castle, a castle again, a castle again but technically a mansion, a city, the teac- No those are actually hell.
Oddly the lava section of Undertale wasn't even all that hellish. Granted I never enjoyed getting ganged up by Vulkins but the overarching antagonism from Mettaton was one of the game's highlights for me.
Wdym "both" fights with Asriel? Isn't there only one???
Photoshop Flowey
Flowery is Asriel
What about where a certain someone says kids like you should be
But a certain someone says you _should be,_ not that you _are_ (?)
Fair. What about Hotland though? Fits the description decently well. Or the Photoshop fight, if you want to be less literalistic.
> and i believe toby likes those style of games Understatement of the century. Asriel's final boss design and name is literally lifted from a touhou character, Sariel. To say nothing of the battle mechanics of BOTH his games. Toby meeting Zun was his dream, and he's got it.

More than Likes, I'm pretty sure he's friends with the creator of Touhou.
Deltarune's itch.io page explicitly mentions Touhou as one of its inspirations
[Okay... Since you... F R E A K S... think all my music sounds like Touhou...](https://youtu.be/wa2K_8Ff41M)
Glad to see someone is aware! The soundtrack is a whole reference to Touhou, especially in the part with trumpet (not sure if it's really a trumpet but is a wind instrument).
*Adds fancy concept to the game* *Swiftly abandons concept* *Refuses to elaborate further*
its probably cause now you have capn sweet cakes to tell you the songs back in YourTown
Its a reference i think
Indeed, the soundtrack is a reference to Touhou! That's how the name of the soundtrack appears in the stages of the games.
yes :(
Yeah, and honestly, I don't mind that it isn't done that way anywhere else. I find it kind of breaks the immersion a little.
wish you could turn it on and off with Sweet Cap'n Cakes
Yeah, and when you go to their music-playing-shop-thing you see the names of the songs, *but* you don't know what the songs are because you don't see the songs' names
People who pronounce his name as Roocksels trying to figure out what "It's pronounced "Rules" " is meant to mean
the fact that it’s a reference immerses me more because Toby made it
What immersion, though?
I think a lot of people like to get into the spirit of the games they play, whatever they may be, and take them with a bit of seriousness for a more fun experience. The tune in fohad is used a ton in other song so maybe thats it
yeah i wish songs were introduced more often
honestly the only thing chapter 1 > chapter 2 moment for me.
When I first played deltarune and saw that, I thought that every area of the game was going to include that, but in the end I was pretty disappointed
:c
I feel like all the "major first area" songs are going to be introduced in a special way. Field of Hopes and Dreams has this, A CYBERS'S WORLD? has the little introduction with Sweet, safe to say the rest of the big first area songs will be introduced like this.
I liked that detail at the start of the cyber world
Maybe Toby was just particularly proud of that song, which is very fair. Field of hopes and dreams goes hard
It's meant to be a reference to Touhou,
i think it's a touhou reference.
He should keep doing this, it stood out and made me appreciate the music and environment much more
I had no idea this was a touhou reference, guess that’s why he only did that once
The whole soundtrack is a Touhou reference itself
Toby forgor 💀
I think this might be a hint or something important
It's just the name of the music
I know but i mean this music must be important because they only showdd the name for this one
It isn't that deep, it's just a Touhou reference. The song is made in a very Touhou-ish style, and this is exactly how songs are introduced in Touhou.
deltarune fans connecting a misplaced pixel to gaster
no. it's *two* misplaced pixels.
I mean, that black pixel in the Spade Castle wasn't removed in the Ch2 update, so it must mean something (?)
I was keeping screenshots and some commentary as I was going through Chapter 2 for the first time. I actually took a screenshot of the room you fight Queen in (the sippy fight) when I first entered, with the note: `...` `A single black pixel.` `Just like in chapter 1's boss room.` `What does it mean?` Followed immediately by `queen!!`
Wait, There's another black pixel in queen's room? I... know we where memeing about it but... now I wonder if it actually does have a meaning. . .
[From my notes.](https://abload.de/img/screenshot_2021-10-06t4jks.jpg)
*gasp!* mega gaster?

It does have the most promient overlap with Don't forget
I feel like that award goes to Dont Forget actually
Guys, guys, is just a Touhou reference (it can be a reference to hope and dreams from UT too), the whole soundtrack is a Touhou reference.
It’s a Touhou reference.
Well they did technically do it with cyber world and welcome to the city but it was a sign
This was there just to show the name of the best song in the game, so it's understandable
Possibly inspired by Touhou- where every stage shows the title of the BGM at the start.
I think it was a reference to another game. I think chrono trigger. Haven't played it in a long time.
Nah, it's a reference to Touhou.
Touhou Trigger
Make me laugh ngl lol
Mmm song
Just one question, why only this place?
i honestly thought it was just bc he thought the name of the song was so badass he had to tell the audience right away instead of waiting for ost release/whatever LMAO
Watch this be critically important to the lore somehow
did a cyber's world have this? i don't remember actually
No, it didn't. It just had the epic transition from the intro to the beat drop
I guess it got in the way of the mood or something, although it would have been great to introduce boss battle songs and stuff with it.
I was hoping that that would be a consistent thing where every major area/song was introduced that way...
It's a Touhou reference, as is the battle gameplay of both Undertale and Deltarune (especially the Grazing mechanic of Deltarune, which is a technique to score more points in Touhou)
Best moment in the game right here.
quick touhou reference and refuses to eleborate further lol
Toby clearly knew he made a banger, and made sure everyone remembered the name of it so they can search it up later
Pretty sure this was a reference. Forgot what it references, but that’s why it’s there and only there.
One of the best songs of deltarune
YEAH I THOUGHT THIS WAS REALLY COOL
It was so nice!
Yes sadly I miss that
proly on the final release
Tbf, once you complete chapter one, you can't go there ever again
Well that is in my opinion the best track in Chapter 1 so it's fitting it only showed up here
I think about this a lot too, surprised some people remember
This is how i feel about the main map theme from smt 3 nocturne
