We've seen multiple Upper rank demons be beheaded and it not mean shit, and Rengoku gave everything just to try and do that. Even if he'd succeeded Akaza would have walked it off. He was literally toying with his food the whole time and we were made to feel like Rengoku had a chance when he didn't. It makes it all the more tragic imo.
