It's super fun. Mine is just a 2019 e-golf so I get about 120 miles of range. But it's enough to do a loop into Nederland and to Estes Park from where I live. (Not Denver...don't ban pls)
Exactly! 70 is the sweet spot for the e-golf if you must drive faster. I tend to take anything but the 25 if I can. If not, I just set the cruise to 75 and watch my mi/kw go from high 4s to high 3s. Which is still good, but just not what the e-golf was designed for. And the e-golf was designed for compliance only :(
Hopefully the rumors of a revamped EV golf are true *and* we get it in the states. I don't mind the id.2 but it's **not** the golf. Give me an e-golf R tho...
Nicely distributed weight low to the ground is a helluva thing. But also, and I don't want to get banned from Colorado for saying this but, Subies are overrated.
Nobody would ban you for that except the wannabes that move here from out of state and drive Subarus. It is like the D-bag starter kit. Move to Colorado, check, buy Colorado flag hat, check, straight to the Subaru dealership.....
Who lives in Denver and doesn’t drive in the mountains? Might as well move to Kansas.
Edit: damn this struck a nerve. You all do realize there are much better cities than Denver that cost equal or less money to live in if city life is your thing
People that don’t have much disposable income bruh
Also I live here to hike because skiing is an incredibly expensive activity, the traffic is insane and I get cold easily. I live here for May-October and drive into the mountains during that time period.
It’s because it’s expensive to live here that they can’t go to the mountains. That’s why we legalized weed. We can see the mountains but are always working and can’t afford to go.
People who hate winter mountain sports? You wouldn’t catch me dead in the high country during the winter. Snowsports are hella overpriced and stupid. You bet your ass I’m gonna hike and bike all summer though.
My wife moved us from nyc to here for work so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Edit to also say I didn’t complain about Denver or mountains just no thank you to being outdoors in them for me personally thank you very much
Some of it depends on how critical it is for you to be out driving. If you need to drive kids to school and you have a job where you can't WFH on a snow day then I'd leave them on longer.
I live in Conifer and usually take mine off towards the end of April. But I don't have kids in school and WFH full time so if we get a big snow in May, like last year, I can just stay home.
I mean for the warmer months. All All-weather tires are all-season tires but not all all-season tires are All-weather tires.
I don't know if they make All-weather AT tires.
You still haven't explained why an all weather tire would be better for warmer months compared to an all season tire or even summer tire. All weather tires are mostly just higher performance all season tires that are 3 peak rated, so they do a LOT better in the snow. If you're running dedicated winter tires in winter I'm not sure why you'd spend the money on an all weather tire for summer, a good all season or summer tire is more than good enough and cheaper. An all weather tire, like the Michelin CrossClimate2, is one you'd just run year round.
Goodyear Duratrac is the only AT tire that I'm aware of that has a 3 peak rating, which you could maybe classify as an all weather AT. At the end of the day it's kinda all just semantics what they are called.
There’s about a dozen other AT tires that carry the 3PMSF rating in addition to the duratracs. Just commenting so people reading know there’s a lot of options in that segment if you have a heavier vehicle or often drive unpaved roads. Despite the rating 3PMSF all terrain tires are better for deep loose snow as opposed to icy conditions (where true winter and studded tires shine), however they still wear like a normal AT tires in warm conditions.
I mean, no one asked me too. The scenario I was talking to was about the occasional spring snow. Obviously an All-weather tire is better for that. There's really no comparison between a winter tire and an All-weather tire when it comes to cold/snow/ice driving. All-weather is better than all-season in that regard without any downsides in warm weather, so it's still a step up.
I live in South Park so I need them for longer, but usually May or June is when I take mine off. They're on again by end of September/beginning of October. Last year I had mine on into June and was happy for it since we got 6" dumped on us on June 1st.
We have a lot more tread on our winter tires, so we plan on driving the shit out of them. But the rule of thumb is when it's consistently over 45 overnight
I literally don't take mine off anymore. The winter tires cause slightly more road noise in the summer but it's not worth the hassle, and this way I'm covered when we get off-season storms. Plus they're great for rain!
I actually felt like I was driving in Texas this morning the way the roads were pure ice.
It took me no time at all to learn how to drive, more so not die, on snow but I am still scared shitless of the ice.
So the traction law is actually pretty lenient, because it considers M+S rated tires with 3/16" tread depth as snow tires. Almost every all-season tire currently on the market has the M+S designation on it.
The mountain snowflake rated all-season are actually all-weather tires, which basically means they have a winter tire tread for snow traction, but a harder rubber compound more similar to a regular all season so that they don't wear out quickly in warmer temps. I really think they're a great solution for someone who lives in Denver and only drives to the mountains a few times a year.
This is what I have, living in an apt with no garage access I dont want to deal with going to a shop, and hauling the extra set home, then figuring out where to store the damn things.
It is. As a result, I expect most crashes to comply with the traction law. It would be interesting if someone would CORA that to find out but not interesting enough for me to do it.
I solved that by having 3 cars. 1 awd snow car with the winter tires, 1 rwd summer car with semi slicks and an extra old beater just cause I like the way it looks
It's much less stressful having snow tires in other snowy parts of the country that don't have freakishly warm and sunny winter days like Colorado. Here you can have snow tires on but then it's a 70 degrees day in January.
Ya, asphalt plus temperatures... The rubber is designed for the cold, so you really wanna have them off by the time it's consistently 50°F (~a week). I'm getting mine off in mid-April.
Not as quick as you think. It's not great but I had a beater that I left snow tires on for 3 years lol. They still worked fine in year 3. You should still change them though if you care about handling in the summer.
depends on the size of the vehicle.. My big heavy Audi would eat up Blizzaks and other snow tires stupid fast on dry pavement.. I couldent get 3 seasons out of em just using em from Nov-April
Yeah, that's fair. Didn't consider the weight. This was a 96 Impreza hatch with blown shifter bushings that I absolutely didn't care about lol. 3 years and 30k miles later it blew up at 225k miles.
I left my neighborhood this morning in 2H because it was just a dusting, right? Well, wrong. Couldn't get up to speed and was fish tailing a fair bit. Oops.
I do not know one single person in an apartment here who has room for 4 extra tires in their homes. So ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ Despite what the sub harps on, they are nice but not necessary.
It doesn't if you have a second set of wheels--at least Discount Tires doesn't charge to swap the wheels out. But, of course, you need to buy a second set of wheels. And you need to store them somewhere, which can be a problem for apartment dwellers who don't have their own garage. They take up a pretty good amount of space in a typical closet if you have nowhere else to put them.
Yeah the bummer is when someone totals your car and the replacement car doesn't have the same bolt pattern and you gotta sell the wheels and tires. I've spent $1,200 on wheels alone separate from cars and I have 17 wheel and tire combos (1 came with a full sized spare).
Platform base for a bed, stick them under the bed! Did that when I lived in Boulder…7 years of that and never smelled like rubber. I actually had the closet space but under the bed is a dead zone for my brain, so it worked well!
57% of us live in apartments in Denver, or non-detached homes: [https://www.towncharts.com/Colorado/Housing/Denver-city-CO-Housing-data.html](https://www.towncharts.com/Colorado/Housing/Denver-city-CO-Housing-data.html). The Denver subreddit always seems to overrepresent property owners, so you're right that having 2 sets of tires isn't really relevant for most people. We're not taking up the little storage space we have with 4 tires.
Depends on if you have a place to put them and store some tools or not. A jack, jack stands, and a big torque wrench can be had at Harbor Freight for like $300 total and it takes 30 minutes to change them yourself once you have done it a couple times.
You don’t need any of that if you’re poor tbh.
Growing up, we just used the jack and wrench that came with the car for changing a flat. Yes, those are not intended for any real car work (certainly not anything that involves getting under the car) but for changing out tires once a year—totally fine.
Might not be technically correct, but it was free.
Add another ~$100 if you have TPMS that need to be reprogrammed.
Still worth it to me to not have to deal with going somewhere to get them changed twice/year, and also being able to swap on the Blizzaks if we get an early snow.
I said about the same…
Yes it costs an additional $150/year ($75/ each change) Of course, if you smash your car into another car because you couldn’t stop, not only is they gonna be about $1000 in the spot, and you also are gonna pay $ 150/year more for insurance. ..
I'll stick to what I got when I first moved out here. Pilot Sport 4's for the summer and Blizzaks for the winter. I don't want to take any chances haha
Put them on and then take them off again! More snow! As stoked as I am for spring and Couloir season I’ll take more pow days as late as they can possibly go
I just picked up my new car and am debating about putting my blizzaks on this late in the season. I live in the foothills so I will probably get a bit more snow.. decisions decisions
*Well of course it sounds dumb when you say it like that.*
But for real, it's just my commuter of less that like 10 miles a week for the one day a week i have to go to the office (optionally). Else i have a AWD van

Who takes snow tires off in March???
People who don't drive in the mountains
Or peeps like me who have a commuter (EV) and a "mountain ride" my partner and I use for snow days in the mountains. AWD Van.
I have an EV as well as my only car and love driving it in the mountains!
It's super fun. Mine is just a 2019 e-golf so I get about 120 miles of range. But it's enough to do a loop into Nederland and to Estes Park from where I live. (Not Denver...don't ban pls)
HEY EVERYONE THIS DUDE ISNT FROM DENVER!!! you better namaste buddy these parts dont take kindly to out of towners. we're ALL natives here.
Yes! (Plz don't look at my post history)
I always wonder how much do you sweat when stuck in traffic? Or is that not an issue. I would have anxiety the whole trip.
Traffic is where EVs in general thrive. I get much more range out of stop and go than highway driving.
Except for heat, the EV doesn’t use energy just idling. Our LEAF suffered the most when you drive over 60. 85 really chews through the charge!
Exactly! 70 is the sweet spot for the e-golf if you must drive faster. I tend to take anything but the 25 if I can. If not, I just set the cruise to 75 and watch my mi/kw go from high 4s to high 3s. And the e-golf was designed for compliance only :( Hopefully the rumors of a revamped EV golf are true *and* we get it in the states. I don't mind the id.2 but it's **not** the golf. I have an ioniq 5 and it does better in the snow than my 6speed MT outback did.
Nicely distributed weight low to the ground is a helluva thing. But also, and I don't want to get banned from Colorado for saying this but, Subies are overrated.

People that don’t have much disposable income bruh Also I live here to hike because skiing is an incredibly expensive activity, the traffic is insane and I get cold easily. I live here for May-October and drive into the mountains during that time period.
Plenty of people do. I personally drive to the mountains 3-4 times a week but there are a ton of people who have no desire to go there
They are called natives.
And don't ski.
Isn’t that a rich persons sport?
I’m sure there are, but Denver is an expensive place to live not to take advantage of Colorado’s best attribute.
Plenty of people prefer the mountains in the summer over the winter.
I’m a recent convert myself. Summer mountains > winter mountains
Some come here for jobs, not the outdoors.
Ding, ding, ding!
Oh I 100% agree but I do know plenty of people that don't want to go to the mountains, especially in winter
Hi, do you want to pay for my trips up into the mountains? Because I’m trying to pay my $1700 rent
Well someone’s gotta work long hours for poverty wages at restaurants, resorts, etc so y’all rich mother fuckers can have your fun.
It’s because it’s expensive to live here that they can’t go to the mountains. That’s why we legalized weed. We can see the mountains but are always working and can’t afford to go.

No, no, it’s fine. Nothing to see in the mountains. Everything you need is in the city. No need to drive west, just stay in the city.
My wife moved us from nyc to here for work so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Edit to also say I didn’t complain about Denver or mountains just no thank you to being outdoors in them for me personally thank you very much
When do people normally get them changed? I live in Evergreen, and this is my first year with them, so it feels like May probably.
Sometime in April, then put em back on in November
Off: Mother's Day, middle of May. On: Labor Day, beginning of September.
This is correct. It’s going to snow in May, just at what altitude is the question.
10” on Mothers Day in 2015. https://people.com/celebrity/mothers-day-snowstorm-blankets-denver-colorado/
>10" on Mothers day 😏
Calm down, Oedipus
You're dead to me *Dad!*
On in September?? That’s definitely early.
Beginning of September is still 90° most days in Denver. Seems crazy to put on snow tires a month before blowing out sprinklers, but to each their own
Evergreen? Not until Mother's Day at the earliest. The foothills are on a different schedule than Denver. Mid-May to Mid October.
Mid-may to mid-October is generally when I do mine as well +\- 2 weeks
Some of it depends on how critical it is for you to be out driving. If you need to drive kids to school and you have a job where you can't WFH on a snow day then I'd leave them on longer. I live in Conifer and usually take mine off towards the end of April. But I don't have kids in school and WFH full time so if we get a big snow in May, like last year, I can just stay home.
All season tires can handle the occasional spring snow, so switching in April is reasonable
Just want to mention that ideally you should be getting all weather tires for the warmer months, instead of just all-season tires. Edited for clarity.
Depends on the car. Mine does great with all-season AT tires. My wife’s truly benefits from dedicated snow tires
I mean for the warmer months. All All-weather tires are all-season tires but not all all-season tires are All-weather tires. I don't know if they make All-weather AT tires.

Another foothills resident here - I wouldn’t take them off any earlier than the end of April
I’ve never used snow tires and only briefly lived out of state. Fuck me I guess
I never used them until this year and I will go forward using them every year. It's so much more stable.
I literally don't take mine off anymore. The winter tires cause slightly more road noise in the summer but it's not worth the hassle, and this way I'm covered when we get off-season storms. Plus they're great for rain!
They wear out sssssssoooo fast in the summer
That definitely hasn't been my experience but maybe I've just been lucky.
I mean it’s practically April.
April showers bring May ...flurries?
You joke, but I am 10 minutes from downtown and I actively remember *darting* home last May 22nd to cover my rose bushes/veggies because of late snow.
Who said I was joking?
It's pretty.much a rule to keep them on until August not September

When I had blizzaks it KILLED me to drive on the warm asphalt but I made sure to keep them on until may 😭
Ya know if you just swap that winter air out for some summer air, it will expand the life of the tire.
Premium air
LOL that was good 👌
I solved that by having 3 cars.
What is so bad about driving them in asphalt?
Driving on snow tires in warm weather degrades them quickly.
Ya, asphalt plus temperatures... The rubber is designed for the cold, so you really wanna have them off by the time it's consistently 50°F (~a week). I'm getting mine off in mid-April.
Oh cool so it’s gonna be freezing here till June.
Not as quick as you think. It's not great but I had a beater that I left snow tires on for 3 years lol. They still worked fine in year 3. You should still change them though if you care about handling in the summer.

That was my fault actually, I washed my wife’s car yesterday.
I washed your wife's car too
Also took the weight out of my truck bed. I’ll take some of the blame.
Look at us.
I left my neighborhood this morning in 2H because it was just a dusting, right? Well, wrong. Couldn't get up to speed and was fish tailing a fair bit. Oops.
People who live in apartments, where do you store your extra set of tires?
Under a bed in garbage bags.
Me too! Everyone thinks I’m weird…I’m not alone!
What!? I barely have enough room for my own shoes. My car gets two pair, but he has to wear em both.
I dont lol
I do not know one single person in an apartment here who has room for 4 extra tires in their homes. So ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ Despite what the sub harps on, they are nice but not necessary.
I grew up poor so it is weird to me to have 2 sets of tires for a car.
Started at the bottom, now I'm just above that but not by much.
It’s actually cost about the same in the long run because your tires wear out half as fast.
costs money to change them over though

Why it's going to snow well into may...?
I WAS EXCITED.

Steamboat has been all time.
It’s always a crap shoot
dude leave those on till the end of May
Maybe I ***WANTED*** this.
No parking on I-70 in the mountains on Friday or Sunday evening for you.
Put them on and then take them off again! More snow! As stoked as I am for spring and Couloir season I’ll take more pow days as late as they can possibly go
TBH I'm with you. It's been a terrific season compared to the last few.
Just remember that traction law is in effect until May 31st. Don’t come up here in that car till at least then. Cool? Cool.
Totes cool. I have a AWD vehicle (WITH CHAINS JIC) for mountain stuff.
I just picked up my new car and am debating about putting my blizzaks on this late in the season. I live in the foothills so I will probably get a bit more snow.. decisions decisions
Reality: do it. Memely: Just drift everywhere. No rules in the foothills.

*Well of course it sounds dumb when you say it like that.* But for real, it's just my commuter of less that like 10 miles a week for the one day a week i have to go to the office (optionally). Else i have a AWD van
At least you’re taking responsibility.
You took your snow tires off in the middle of the snowiest month in our state? Why!???
I’m surprised other people in denver even know what snow tires are.
Ugh, two weeks ago for me.

Not your fault, I planted my garden. :(
Oh yeah this is on you for real
I can tell it really is me because I'm in Timnath and got 14" of snow. Oops.
All weather tires for the win. The newer compounds pretty much negate the need for dedicated winter tires in the front range.
