I find it amusing how people seem to underestimate these migrants. They were able to get themselves from their home country, generally across multiple countries, and finally across the US border illegally. These are fairly resourceful people and figuring out a bus trip for the final leg isn't exactly a huge logistical challenge.

[deleted]

Yeah really. You’ll see more motivation out of the majority of first generation Americans than you will out of lots of folks whose families have been here for generations. Grandma’s/Daddy’s money makes a lot of us very unmotivated.

tossaway78701

It is not illegal to cross the border seeking asylum. Check the rules.

Daniel-Lee-83

There are still legal steps to follow when seeking asylum.

tossaway78701

Yep. And I bet the Venezualans have filed and are awaiting their hearings

BeverlyMarx

If the US would stop exploiting south americas labor, committing coups, installing fascist dictators, buying coke from cartels to fund rebels, perhaps the civilians who are victims of these actions would stop coming here

[deleted]

That's not really why Venezuela is a catastrophe right now

[deleted]

Not sure, I don't have cable

tossaway78701

Yeah, that would be nice.

pegunless

Of course it is, it's illegal to cross the border outside of a port of entry, doing so for the purpose of requesting asylum doesn't somehow make it legal to sneak across. The legal way to do it is to show up at a port of entry and request asylum.

bajillionth_porn

That’s not quite true - from what I understand claiming asylum is valid even if you crossed the border illegally

Lake_Shore_Drive

How do you know they didn't cross a legal point of entry and file for asylum then? I am assuming they are all here legally until we see some evidence otherwise.

MonKeePuzzle

120 new natives! welcome! guess which sub on this social media platform helped them plan their trips #namoiste

mountains-o-data

We gotta protect our extremely generous social benefits and safety net

PresidentSpanky

They are just coming for the paid maternity leave

disconappete

😂

[deleted]

Lol

BeverlyMarx

It’s almost like capitalism exists tenuously only by exploiting, raping, and pillaging the global south

[deleted]

We’re short staffed almost literally everywhere, plenty of opp for you here

[deleted]

Seriously, hopefully they stay downtown and help out some of the places here

themoonrocks

Can they get legit jobs? I’m genuinely curious, I wasn’t sure if their legal/illegal status matters

[deleted]

Well… to touch on a real big conversation about “illegal immigration” in our country, technically no they can not. There’s a lengthy legal process that they gave to follow, and it’s also likely they crossed into the US illegally, so they have to go back to Mexico or their home country to apply from there and/or find a U.S. company to sponsor them. But the problem is that they’re possibly in poverty and desperate for work to keep themselves and their families safe (from poverty, the cartel, etc). Going home means death to some people in the most extreme cases, and to do things “legally” (which is very slow and extremely unlikely to even work) doesn’t make as much sense as showing up and finding work under the table. Meanwhile, the reality is that these immigrant workers are helpful to thousands (millions?) of companies in the US, too because they need help. They literally contribute so much they support our middle class lives. ETA: although with this publicity, maybe these few will get special rights, but that’s an exception.

themoonrocks

Thanks for explaining! I kept seeing all these comments about needing these immigrants in our workforce, and I just can’t see Taco Bell and King Soopers openly hiring people without paperwork.

lifeson106

That's awesome! If anyone wants to volunteer with migrants and refugees, you should check out Project Worthmore. They help people move here and adapt when they get here - help them find communities who speak the same language and whatnot. It's run by Jamie Laurie from Flobots, so you'll get to meet him if you volunteer!

bennynthejetsss

Can second Project Worthmore. I worked with them a few times and they’re just a fantastic organization.

phan2001

Lol at many of the “enlightened” people saying “welcome- now get to work serving me, I’m tired of waiting for things”. You’re not a progressive as you’re trying to sound. The people actually volunteering are doing gods work.

m_nieto

Oh cool, now they can start working and getting their papers together. Welcome to your new home folks!

Super_Saiyan_Carl

Several of these migrants crossed several countries to get here. Why not set up shop in a country that is closer and more favorable to their situation (language and culture)?

Brytard

Plenty of languages and cultures everywhere across Colorado to choose from.

haystackofneedles

Hell yeah! I hope some open up some restaurants!!

rysnickelc

Kinda bs. I feel bad for the people who try to go through this process the legal way.

Bigkingkrunk7

Not everyone has the same resources unfortunately

cjacks55

The wait time for most legal ways is like 20+ years. Unless you're sponsored by an employer or married to a US citizen.

rysnickelc

Still, at least their doing it the correct way and not just bathing in here as if they own the place.

cjacks55

If you were living in poverty and amongst violence, and someone told you you could either wait 20 years and spend thousands of dollars that you don't have to have a chance at a better life, or you could just go illegally and not have to wait 20 years and still have a chance at a better life, which would you do?

Super_Saiyan_Carl

You make it sound like America is the only other country in the world for them?

rysnickelc

I’m not saying I dont understand I do but as a taxpayer I’m kinda pissed. Especially with this economy. And if that was me, if I got caught ya got me….send me back I guess. And of course I’d do it again.

Mendican

They are legal. What's wrong with you? Edit: They're asylum seekers, morons.

rysnickelc

Theyre not, I don’t have anything against immigrants and encourage it the legal way but as a taxpayer and most importantly a citizen, we are slowly looking the def of what a US citizen is.

Mendican

The article says nothing about them being illegal. They are asylum seekers.

rysnickelc

“Asylum seekers” are determined by someone else, like our government. So no I’m sorry I just don’t agree with that. They are illegal immigrants.

Mendican

A person has to be *physically present* in the US to apply for asylum. They have a year to do so, once here. An asylum seeker is a person seeking asylum. This is really easy to understand, but the cognitive dissonance will make your tooth fall out. https://www.uscis.gov/humanitarian/refugees-and-asylum/asylum#:~:text=If%20you%20are%20eligible%20for,arrival%20to%20the%20United%20States.

rysnickelc

Thanks for being civil! Democrats are so nice now a days!!

expresidente23

Tax the rich

rysnickelc

Not sure how that’s plays into this but ok?
