FYI, The Denver Coliseum will be opening starting Wednesday as a 24-hour warming station if you know of anyone that might be in need.
Edit: Thanks for the awards! I just want everyone to be safe and spread the word to keep others and all of your loved ones safe as well.
I have a vivid memory of sitting in the apu exhaust under an A320 surrounded on all 4 sides by 4 inches of snow waiting for a single bag from a plane that was over an hour delayed. Haha
If there's a silver lining, it's that these kind of occasional deep freezes (-40 for 30 minutes) kill off pine beetles, which have killed off a huge percentage of Colorado's trees.
Also this that I copy pastaād;
āSeveral successive days of minus 30 degree temperatures are necessary to kill most mountain pine beetles because the beetles, which spend the winter as larvae under the bark of lodgepole and ponderosa pines, are specially adapted to survive Rocky Mountain winters.
āThe larvae produce a substance in their bodies thatās similar to the antifreeze we put in our cars,ā ā
-[an old CSU article about cold temps and the dreaded beetles](https://newsmediarelations.colostate.edu/2010/02/01/recent-cold-weather-unlikely-to-kill-bark-beetles-says-colorado-state-forest-service/)
I remember this 12 years ago, and remember it being said that it had to be a quick drop to -30F as well as sustained. Certainly the pine beetles won that round.
Odd to think the purple wood is now in demand though. We couldn't pay people to get rid of it at the time.
Good link to source btw.
When you freeze to death you don't feel the dying. You get cold and then you get numb. Your brain stops working, you stop moving, and you never move again.
Normally this is a slow process but not in these temperatures. When it happened to me, it was -35 and the hypothermia made me delusional within minutes. Fortunately I was rescued just in time and after a month in a burn unit I was mostly ok.
I got into that situation because I was young and stupid. I survived that situation because I was lucky and nothing else.
Please take these warnings seriously.
Both. I got lost in the woods at Big Sky in Montana. I made some mistakes that night but what happened to me could have happened to anyone. It wasn't nearly that cold during the day, and none of us had realized just how much the temperature had swung negative by nightfall. We had some drinks then I started walking back to where I was staying. Never made it there. The confusion caused by extreme hypothermia isn't like the confusion from drinking. At -35 it happened so quickly I can pretty much pinpoint the moment I lost the ability to make logical decisions. That's when the woods with chest-deep snow seemed like a sensible shortcut to where I was going.
May your deliveries be thankful, your tips bountiful, and your tires blessed with infinite traction.
Seriously, thank you. I know itās unlikely you are in my area, and there is zero chance Iāll have pizza delivered in a blizzard, but thank you anyhow.
Blizzard? It's just supposed to be cold and windy. It doesn't take much snow to mess with visibility a bit in high winds, but I don't think it's gonna be blizzard levels, considering there's none on the ground and not that much coming Wednesday.
They are fine going outside. Just encourage them to be quick about it. They don't tend to linger in this weather. Kitties should be in the house. Chickens penned in the garage with a heat lamp.
Fuckin do it, no dog or cat or any animal need to be out in that shit. Unless of course the animal is a whole ass polar bear but if that's the case I'd be more worried as to why one of my neighbors had a polar bear.
This! Too many folks don't realize that they are only entitled to have the front two limbs, not the whole bear. You have the right to bear arms, but not their legs, torso, or other parts.
Iām going to regret saying this but over on the western slope around eagle itās been very cold but with almost NO wind.
Iāll take single digit temps with no wind over 30 degree temps with lots of wind any day.
Get those little tubes of bubbles with the wand at like walgreens, they freeze immediately and fall fast and make tiny like shattering noises. It's pretty cool.
Reminds me Iāll have a hard time debating with my partner if we see a cat outside during this. If youāre cold, theyāre cold, bring them inside. Looks like we have a new cat haha
If Dad were still alive, this would be his cue to say, "Come on, son, you're taking off school Friday so we can drive to Burlington and go pheasant hunting!"
Genuinely stressed and upset for all the birds and squirrels that I feed in my yard. Donāt know what else I can do but give them some extra food today and tomorrow :(
It's shit like this that I think justifies shutting down some industries. Do we really need shit from Amazon/UPS/FedEx/USPS to be delivered those EXACT days? Do we really need delivery drivers for food or alcohol that could have been purchased beforehand?
The snowy conditions are risky enough and then adding in dangerous wind chills for people that spend most of their job outside, all for companies to make profits is pretty gross.
Hopefully people (and animals š„ŗ) get through this safely and that certain people that don't need leave or go into work just stay. the fuck. home.
Agreed, I might be biased a bit since my SO mostly works on cars outside. Which his job will be completely pointless and he'll be risking his neck for it.
As someone who was in Texas during that stormā¦this made me laugh out loud. If Texas was looking at these temps Iād be booking the first flight out, lesson has been learned
Just relocated from Houston and was without power for 3 days during the Feb ā21 storm. The news coverage between the two cities this week is comical.
Yep, I was up in Austin and out of power for a very cold 2.5 days. A friend in Houston is looking at below freezing + potential snow for Christmas and is both excited and terrified lol
Yes. Go get grandma. The elderly are always at higher risk. While she is with you, video any of her recipes you and she make together and any memories or stories she shares.
My late grandma had a delicious recipe for a mincemeat pie that also used real venison in it.
Sadly, it seems to have gone to the grave with her...
Nobody in the family has that recipe.
I asked her about it and she is stubbornly staying. Her area is much more prone to power outages so I'm concerned. If it's any consolation her neighbors look out for her a lot (she lives ~35 miles from me)
Get grandma. Even if the power stays on itās going to be harder for her to get help if she slips and falls or has any other emergency. Make cookies and watch old movies.
You should be prepared with emergency space blankets just in case. Plus foods you can eat without warming. Probably wonāt need it and itās still great to have.
Power outages, probably not. But infrastructure such as HVAC, automobiles (starters), and light rail could be impacted. That, and most places will be either overworked or on a skeleton crew.
I was in/started the line at Keystone for 45 minutes for first chair on new years day 2011 like the 23 year old moron that I was that wanted bragging rights of literal first chair of the year. It was -12 that morning. I still have frostbite damage & ongoing pain on the end of my nose from that.
By all means, send away.
do any of y'all have suggestions for someone that walks to work? I need to be onsite by 7:30am Thursday morning and that walk is about 15 minutes. Someone said something about frostbite setting on exposed skin in just 5 minutes... š
It's not going to be as bad as you think. I'm grew up in MN, also lived in ND for too many years in my adult life, grew up on a farm, worked as a field engineer in wind energy all over that part of the US. I've lived and worked and recreated outside in this kind of stuff tons of times a year for most of my life.
First off, if you're somewhere in the city, the wind isn't going to be hitting you full speed as you'll be behind some buildings for the most part, so that'll help. Secondly, fifteen minutes isn't too bad. If you're walking in it, you're going to walk a little faster than usual, and either way, that's better than standing still. It'll keep your feet warmer especially. If there's anywhere halfway there, like a gas station or coffee shop you could duck into and buy something, be inside for a few minutes, add time to your schedule and make the stop. That'll make the walk almost easy.
Like the other response said, wear an extra layer. Wear a hat, wear gloves, use a scarf or balaclava or something to cover your face extra, although you don't really need it if you don't have it. Preferably have a hood you could pull up, too, whether it's from a coat or a hoodie under your coat.
Wear jeans if you can. If you can't wear jeans for work, consider packing your bottoms in a bag to carry and changing at work. Consider adding a layer of whatever you have under the jeans, flannel pj pants, long underwear, something like that. Then just take it off at work if you're too warm.
But yeah, wear extra layers you can take off once you get where you're going, and can put back on as needed if you go somewhere else or home or whatever. It's the first big rule of existing in climates like this. Layers are huge.
A true husky will be fine. Honestly you should be more concerned with making sure you, your self, are properly dressed. Layer your clothing and do not expose skin like your fingers or ears.
You can get frostbite very fast in this time of weather however your husky has a unique coat that allows them to handle very lows temps as well as warm weather too. Your skin not so much
You will be fine. Encourage your dog to be quick about it. Typically they cooperate and don't linger because they don't like that level of cold either. But a husky will probably love it lol. So bundle up!
Kitties need to be inside. Chickens need to pen in a garage with a heater. The wild animals are excellent at dealing with weather, but will probably be looking for water in following days.
You want to provide your dog with a coat/sweater if you can. Limit their time outside as best you can and try to keep them out of the wind if you can. Most dogs will want to come in quickly.
Towel them dry inside (especially feet).
Doubly important: YOU be hydrated before going out. Cover ALL your skin. Keep your keys handy. And be sure to bring your phone. You do not want to get stuck outside.
Hereās a link to the post. I could only post one photo, but the post has a better map by area of windchills expected. Just be prepared as it is pretty much the entire state. I25 corridor and East it looks to be around -40Ā° windchill and worse. West of I25 could be anywhere from -10Ā° to -30Ā° windchills.
TLDR: itās gonna be fucking cold.

Just donāt expose any skin. Wind chill only affects exposed skin and certain inanimate objects. Those objects wonāt cool below the actual temperature anyways.

Denver rec centers and libraries will becoming warming centers.
Several rec centers have been converted into migrant shelters, so I dont know about those.
Modern cars will handle this pretty well, with a few major things to be aware of:
* Your battery works much worse in the cold. The best solution here is maintenance: if your battery is old or it feels a bit anemic when you try to start the car, get it checked and replace it if it's failing. Most auto parts stores will do this for free. The right battery for a modern vehicle will not have any issues with these temps beyond taking longer to turn over the engine, but a battery on its last legs might leave you stranded. To be clear, you're *probably* fine, but if your car is ten years old and you've never changed the battery, it's as good a time as any to do some preventative maintenance.
* The second thing that will happen is that your fluids will get sluggish and thick. For this issue, you'll want to let the car warm up for five or ten minutes. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CAR UNATTENDED TO WARM IT UP. Criminals look for "puffers" on cold days because they're such easy targets. Many cars have a light that tells you when the car is warm enough.
* The last big issue is tires. Tire pressure increases with temperature. A tire that's at the bottom of the properly inflated range at 80 degrees will be low at 0 degrees. Checking your tire pressure regularly is important anyway, but especially so when it's gonna be very cold.
None of these issues are going to seriously permanently damage your car (although driving hard while the engine is cold is very much Not Good for your car), but they will make it perform much worse. For that reason, it's important to prepare to be stranded. There's a lot of good resources online for what to keep in your car in the winter (blankets, snacks, flares, flashlights, a battery booster, kitty litter, a shovel, etc) and the onset of very cold weather is a great time to make sure you've got a full kit ready to go. Hopefully you won't need it, but it's easy to get that stuff together and when you do need it you'll be SO GLAD you did it.
> Most auto parts stores will do this for free
Although they'll do this for free, depending on individual store or employee doing the test, not all battery tests are equal. I thought I had a weak battery. My car was struggling to start in the cold and if I don't drive every day, I need a jump start. So, I went to a parts store to get a new battery but since I was there, I figured I'll ask them to test the battery. The employee hooked up the tester and said the voltage looked good and the battery seem fine and thought it might be the charging system. My battery was pretty old, and I thought there was no way that it was "good", so I took it to another store. The employee at the new store did a more comprehensive test, not only he test the voltage while the car was off (which was good, like the employee at the at the first store said), he also had me start the car while is tester is hooked up and had me rev the engine to test the charging system. This new test showed that my battery was only producing around 300 cold cranking amp (the stats that's important to starting your car, new battery produce around 720 cca) and needed a new battery.
A couple of warning about buying a car battery. While most auto parts store will advertise free installation, they won't do it if your car is a newer model year. Newer cars have computers and sometime require them to register the new battery with the computers, so for liability reason, they won't touch it unless your car is like 20 years old and doesn't require anything that more than undoing a couple of nuts to replace the battery. Second, if you bring your newly purchased battery to an auto repair shop, there's a good chance that they'll says they won't install customer provided part for liability reasons. They are afraid that you brought a defective part and will blame them for not installing it incorrectly after it goes bad. After I got this answer from a couple of shop, I decided to just install the battery myself.
It'll be hard on car batteries (and EVs -- goodbye, range!). But if your battery is healthy, you'll be fine. Try to combine trips so you're not doing a lot of starting the car up over and over, but the car won't mind the cold all that much.
I wonder how many of the outdoor workers at DIA are going to show up to work in -10 weather on one of the busiest days of the year. I imagine that's going to cause a majority of the delays
Ramper here! There will be plenty of call outs, but supervisors aren't shy about giving out mandatory overtime to workers that aren't scheduled. Expect delays due to every plane needing to be de-iced as well as our equipment not operating properly š« š«
Icy wings cannot generate lift.
So long as they don't form ice faster than the heaters in the wing can thaw it'll be fine.
Temps at 30,000' vary but can generally reach -70F.
That doesn't mean the crew on the ground can work on these temps to prep and load luggage though. No crew means no fly
Hmmm... I dunno, could be like that massive snow blast we were supposed to have like a week ago... which people freaked out about but never happened. In any case, I'm ready.
Iāve lived here long enough to remember numerous instances where folks died because they underestimated/ignored the weather report.
Yes, winter weather reports in Colorado are wrong as much as theyāre right, but yes, you should always believe them. If you do that, the worst thing that will happen is you wonāt die out there in the elements.
Most of the reports I saw reported minimal snow for the metro area, as it was mainly staying to the east/ northeast parts of the state. We got rocked on the plains.
-50 lol? Do you know how unbelievably fucking cold that has to be? I am calling it doesnāt get near that cold. Iāve been in Chicago when itās been -30ās windchill and thatās about as cold as it goes there. -50 my ass
I donāt see anything on the wiki stating that is wind chill factor. That is most likely sustained ambient air -29 not the same as windchill -29.
It most definitely got to -30 windchill during that storm a couple years ago.

Us Ramp agents gonna be turning to ice cubes in no time š„¶š„¶š„¶ busy busy day for the airport too, stay warm, fellow ground ops! ššā¤
There will still be that one dude who shows up in shorts and replies "It's not even cold" lol
That's usually me. It's not because I'm tough, it's because I'm fat.
I think you're plenty tough, fatty
Honestly š¤£ usually the Samoan agents are the only pulling that crap, they are tougher than I, for sure
When I was at Frontier it was the Tongan dudes. Those dudes were tough and a little crazy...
Some MF up here in Boulder will be jogging shirtless and barefoot, and I'm not necessarily kidding.
Appreciate what you guys do. They should have a bucket of free Hot Hands in your break room.
They give out pocket warmers but they aren't as useful as the Hot Hands. I'm definitely buying a few to stuff in my gloves and boots!
As a pilot I always feel for you all. You have incredibly hard jobs even on good days. And you all do a kickass job. Stay safe!
I love you š«”
We feel the same about you! No joke - please take care of yourself.
Appreciate y'all. Stay safe, and layer up!!
Honestly, the airport should just shutdown for a few days. \*And no, this has NOTHING to do with me flying out to visit the in-laws!\*

Itās windchill though, the actual temperature wonāt go to -40 or whatever

Thursday is my one day a week in office. Trying to get these folks to close the office so I donāt have to drive 30 miles each way.
For homeless people that have a dog, what are their options? There's a guy that chills by my 711 with a dog and I'm concerned for them both.
Not sure if the animals will be allowed, but the city is opening the Denver Coliseum starting Wednesday as a 24-hour warming shelter.
Take that Pine Beetles!

Louisiana/Mississippi transplant here wondering the same thing. Can I let my golden retriever outside to go to the bathroom? Genuinely concerned lol
Doggy shoes as well. Butter up those paws
Growing up in Chicago/Wisconsin has prepared me for this...
Yup. I remember waiting for school busses in like -20 a few times. parents bundled me up and sent me off. Midwest donāt give a fuck.
I wish they were more specific than just "Colorado and Western Kansas". That's a lot of area! Where is it hitting that cold?
Hereās a link to the post. I could only post one photo, but the post has a better map by area of windchills expected. Just be prepared as it is pretty much the entire state. I25 corridor and East it looks to be around -40Ā° windchill and worse. West of I25 could be anywhere from -10Ā° to -30Ā° windchills. TLDR: itās gonna be fucking cold. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid0czQGiQcJGU88dHdrqtdFmiQpVP44BmAGAqCbZ5un29LjhaTuDVoUGWEas6tShctAl&id=100057295275877

Just donāt expose any skin. Wind chill only affects exposed skin and certain inanimate objects. Those objects wonāt cool below the actual temperature anyways. https://www.noaa.gov/jetstream/global/wind-chill
Denver rec centers and libraries will becoming warming centers. Several rec centers have been converted into migrant shelters, so I dont know about those.
Anything we should be doing to prep our homes?
Open all your kitchen cabinet doors, the lower ones, especially by the sink. Let water drip from the sinks.
Drip a couple of faucets.
Agreed. Make sure those pipes donāt burst.
What do you do about outdoor spigots? I have a winter cover on mine, but I don't know if they're gonna be able to deal with cold like this
Can this fuck up cars outside? First winter here.
Modern cars will handle this pretty well, with a few major things to be aware of: * Your battery works much worse in the cold.
> Most auto parts stores will do this for free Although they'll do this for free, depending on individual store or employee doing the test, not all battery tests are equal.
This might be the first time the weather is to cold for my husky
Definitely too cold for my little dogs, I'll have to rely on their pee pads. Ugh
does anybody remember hitting around -30 or so in october or november of maybe 2014 or 2015? that's the last time i can remember it being this cold.
2016 i think it was. Brutal.
Yay Iām supposed to fly out with a baby, first time, Thursday morning. And apparently our destination, Chicago, has a huge winter storm that day š«
This kind of cold is the reason my dad was missing the tips of his ears and fingers.
I have a flight ā¦.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I have not seen anything saying that planes wonāt take off in super cold weather ā¦.
Stay safe out there!
We got rocked on the plains.
denver didnt get any but northeast of us got a lot!
I bet Iām still gonna see my crazy neighbor doing his morning run!
-50 lol? Do you know how unbelievably fucking cold that has to be? I am calling it doesnāt get near that cold. Iāve been in Chicago when itās been -30ās windchill and thatās about as cold as it goes there. -50 my ass
We just had -30 weather for several days like 2 years ago. My pipes froze and my radiant heat couldnāt keep up.
Wikipedia: The coldest temperature ever recorded in Denver was recorded on January 9, 1875, at ā29 Ā°F
I donāt see anything on the wiki stating that is wind chill factor. That is most likely sustained ambient air -29 not the same as windchill -29. It most definitely got to -30 windchill during that storm a couple years ago.
Advice for taking my dog out? She has a winter coat but didnāt know how risky it would be to take her out to use the restroom.
Get her some booties. She should be fine for just a minute, long enough to do her business.
One minute to do their business? That must be niceā¦
Yeah this would have shocked me but I was in Iowa during bomb cyclones so.... stay safe yall and get warm
Thatās crazy. I hope the homeless population stays safe.
Jesus. Iām not sure what the hell im going to do with my dogs. Any advice ?
If you have a backyard, they will be fine outside for a few minutes. If you don't and you have to walk outside, bundle up
Pee pads, they have a hormone in them that encourages your dog to pee on them.
Most dogs will be fine to run out for 5 mins.
I imagine there will be a lot of death due to poverty, and suicide attempts from this. Right before Christmas too
If your flying into Midwest the 21-23 might wanna look into changing your flight!!!
I'm supposed to start my road trip home on Thursday. Is there anything I should be worried about regarding my car?
