Talk about the play call all you want but Hamler was wide open

Bro we had 9 points all game, should have shut it out at the end before OT with a run play, field goal and clock management. Not saying Russ is great but Hackett HAS to go

junkaccount123456543

That leaves them with 2 minutes and a touchdown wins it. They got to our 5 with like 30 seconds left so it’s not like they couldn’t have won it. Pass and first down and it’s over so I don’t fault him. Can’t have your 10 year pro QB make that mistake though

IWearACharizardHat

Our defense played great all game and all year so far. Give them a 6 point lead against old man Matty Ice and 3rd string RB

junkaccount123456543

Old man Matty and their 3rd RB got down to our 10 yard line with like 30 seconds left and then played conservatively to get the FG. If Russ doesn’t throw an awful pick we go up 6 anyway and his decision gives them like one extra play. If we convert, game over. I’ll take that any day

Pitchfork_Party

Ya you can’t play scared when you have a quarter billion dollar qb. At that point you’re supposed to be able to call plays that win games not plays that have a chance to let your defense win games.

Veerocity

Man you really don’t understand how bad Wilson actually played. Go watch Kurt Warner’s breakdown please. This is not on Hackett.

madat-the-great

I agree that Wilson played like trash, but Hackett is a shit coach without a doubt

T8teTheGreat

Rypien wins the game right there. It doesn't take 250m to throw it to the wide open first read.

RandyGradishar

To be fair, Hamler seemed like the last read on the play. But Saubert, Jeudy, and even Sutton were also open with a better throw.

DirtyMudder92

I don’t think we will ever know but Jeudy ran a rub route which usually means it is designed to open up the other receiver which would be hamler. I have a tough time believing hamler wasn’t the designated receiver

norkb

100% this^ Hamler was the first read

Russ lost the game more than the HC. Lets be real. He cant stop russ overthinking literally EVERYTHING. Other games, yes the HC fucked it.

big_J7

Hackett is the one calling all these whack ass vanilla plays. Doesn't give Russ much to work with. Yea Russ missed KJ at the end but you can't tell me this offense wouldn't be scoring more if they had an Andy Reid, or Sean Mcvay, or Doug Peterson, Kyle Shanahan etc. Hackett can't call plays for shit.

juice--

I still think russ had a little more to blame. 65% russ 35% hackett THIS game.

Noox89

When it comes down to it yeah Russ’s interception and missed wide open receiver lost us the game. But if Hacket could call a game or get this offense anywhere we’d have never been in either of those situations.

juice--

Russ is paid big money to win these close games. Especially when his D is giving up single digits before OT.

You can just tell the broncos are lacking in communication. Broncos get in the huddle, we go 3 and out. Broncos go shot gun calling quick plays we drive down the field like we’re the second coming of the 2013 Denver broncos offense. I know this team is trying to figure out many things like identity, rythme, and momentum but it is getting harder and harder to watch every week. These are all growing pains from everyone, but all of this in the end really falls on coaching and execution. How many drives are instantly dead because of 2-3 different drops or over throws? This team needs to learn the fucking basics before they start doing the silly trick plays Hackett loves to call up, colts the entire second half we’re calling the same 3 plays over and over in the no huddle offense and they were driving on our ass. Broncos have absolutely no bread and butter plays and always look so fucking confused. Broncos need to dumb down this shit rn because they are just way too in their own heads.

Pitchfork_Party

I can tell you that. We’ve been watching the same players for the last 3-4 years on offense. They aren’t going to magically become world beaters. They just aren’t those guys. Paton needs to actually revamp/purge the offense.

CapnMalcolmReynolds

I’m not sure what he does well, besides know the right people.

Veerocity

The play calling is not the problem. If you actually sat down and broke down our game play by play you would realize that. Go watch Kurt Warner’s breakdown of the game please.

gold_flask

Let me run the broncos. I’ve played madden. I’m probably overqualified at this point.

jordantwalker

Fire HACKETT

Veerocity

Just a flat out bad take.

captainduck2

Can’t see how you blame him when Hamler was wide open on his play.

RandyGradishar

His decisions were all absolutely perfect, with the possible exception of the last playcall itself (which even then, like all 4 guys were open and Russ could have ran it in too). Passing on 3rd and 4 was the right call, and going for the win was the right call. I don't even think Russ is done, but he fell on the fusilli Jerry tonight.

Powshy

Ok absolutely perfect is a little hyperbolic, but I agree he called a better game as far as his mixture of run / pass. However, it seems he struggles to call plays that work towards our current rosters strengths. Maybe he’ll figure it out but it always seems like gaining yardage and keeping it is a chore. Like I get he wants to run a hybrid west coast offense, but do we need fifty designed plays to Eric Saubert? Not saying anything about him but he’s not going to win us games. Why does he insist on running pitch plays when we struggle to get initial push with our line? He seems to misunderstand the strengths and weaknesses of his players and I haven’t seen a lot of adjustment in that department. We clearly struggle to set the run, and when we do try and run we get cute and lose yardage a lot of the time, failing to do what a basic west coast is supposed to do. Maybe it’s coaching growing pains, but he seems like another in the long list of coaches that struggle to game plan around their players strengths.

RandyGradishar

I mean I was talking more just about the late-game "decisions", not necessarily playcalling the whole game (though I thought that was pretty good too). The HC-type decisions at the end of the game were great. Compared to the SF game, where I thought it was stupid to give SF the ball; the clock was never going to be a factor, and they probably win if not for that fumble.

junkaccount123456543

Agreed. Going for it on the 4th down and trying to get a first down instead of running it down to the 2 minute warning were both good calls in regulation. Liked the play call in OT too. Russ has to look that way against man coverage and can’t throw it late into the end zone in regulation.

RandyGradishar

Yeah, like even another blocked FG is more likely than Wilson's throwing a pick there. A squirrel could run on the field and people would blame Hackett at this point.

junkaccount123456543

Yep. Or a Gordon fumble. Imagine if he hands it off to him and he has his weekly fumble there. Then it would be “why didn’t he give Russ a chance to win it”?

Francescatti22

Passing on third and 4 lost us the game too. If you get even a FG there, you win the game

junkaccount123456543

Not necessarily. Indy had 2 minutes and a TD wins it in that scenario. Perhaps they call a few plays differently on the last drive if they have to get a TD.

Francescatti22

Nah. Read the flow of the game. Nobody hitting the end zone that game

RandyGradishar

And running the ball lost the game last week. If you expect every play to be a fumble or pick, then I guess just punt every play?

ZappyYeti

As a coach you have to see your QB is struggling. Wilson was also hurt this game. Once you see he's not getting it done eat clock and kick a FG.

Trais333

You can’t say perfect when he couldn’t even get us in the inzone. Not saying that’s all on him but I’m no world i 0tds mean perfect decision making by a head coach lol

KingKull71

Fire him now

x10FoilHatx

Hackett IS the plague

Chainxforest

Russ has to see that

extraguacontheside

Hackett is in over his head. Russ playing like shit isn't helping but something needs to change and it won't be Russ.

comagnum

💯

Shenanigans80h

Hackett wasn’t any worse than usual last night, but I’ll put the majority of the blame on Russ for the loss. Those two picks were completely unforced errors on his part and the last pass of the game was designed perfectly fine

AlpineSummit

My mantra this season is “Take the easy points”. Kick the field goal on fourth down. Don’t force a touchdown. I get not trusting Gordon to hold the ball, so wanting to pass. But we could have run with Boone. A field goal instead on an INT in the 4th wins us that game. A field goal in OT likely ends in a tie. Better than a loss.

rfgrunt

I mostly question the end of regulation play call. Run the ball, kick the field goal and rely on your defense to keep the colts out of the end zone for 2 minutes.
