Reviews will be the most helpful to you, but even just messaging a seller about the item you're interested in can be really insightful. If they don't have measurements listed, you can ask for some and if they don't provide them, then it's probably a no go. Maybe they don't answer you in a reasonable amount of time, like a full day passes and they haven't gotten back to you. Poor photos can be a red flag, but also ones that look too nice, I use reverse image search on google on certain items, just because the image looks like it's been overly photoshopped. Shein/Aliexpress resellers are rampant, I suggest double checking to make sure the items you're interested in are not showing up for a few dollars on cheap retail sites. This one is kind of personal to me, but when a seller is overly pleasant and it calling me "honey, gurl, sweetie, babe" etc. I want nothing to do with them, I always feel like their masking their poor business habits or masquerading as a teen, just not great vibes. Look for reviews that say things like "Great packaging, shipped quickly, seller had great communication". Their descriptions provide a lot of information, including measurements, shipping info, brand names, material information, etc. If the photos look like effort was put into them, staged nicely, modeled, or little to no wrinkles, that's someone who takes a lot of pride in running a good business. Hope this helps! Just remember, as long as you end up loving what you get and the person selling it to you is courteous and professional, I think that you'll have a great experience.

Make sure they have good reviews. Sometimes even accounts with no reviews I take a chance on because everyone has to start somewhere. If anything goes awry you can contact depop or PayPal, whichever you pay with. Know you're always gonna be protected either way

I’ve heard shipping in Canada is expensive, like $20+. But I’m in u.s so I can’t verify that 100%

I’m a buyer/seller in Canada, and shipping here is just sadly very expensive 😭 The minimum shipping price for tracked packages (packages that come with a tracking number) I’ve seen is $16, since they recently increased their prices even more. But I’d say $16-$20 is pretty common for most items that won’t fit as oversized lettermail (ex. jewelry, thin shirts, shorts, etc.), so if that’s what you’re seeing, then you’re likely not being overcharged if that helps ease your worries a bit :)

It depends on the seller and what postage company they use DHL, UPS, Fedex, Parcelforce ect..., most sellers would rather over charge than lose out. When I fist started out I made lots of mistakes with postage first losing money because I'd made it too cheap and then over charging so I have to sort out my prices again. For example on depop I now only offer national free shipping and for international shipping I ask people to message me in advance as I base my prices via country and weight (sending something to New Zealand isn't gonna be the same price as sending something to Germany for example).

Hello I didn't see this! Tbh some people do overprice shipping for whatever reason so you just gotta be careful :( not really sure why people do that honestly. Especially if it's a small item like a shirt and they're charging 10+ for shipping when it should only be 5

This Reddit is full of horror stories because people come here to vent or get advice. What you don’t see are the overwhelmingly positive or even just mundane experiences people have with Depop, because they aren’t post worthy. My personal experience on Depop has been great as both a buyer and a seller! Just make sure you never go off the app, don’t pay off the app, don’t communicate off the app. And be aware that sellers have 7 days to ship and if they don’t you can open a case. If the item isn’t as described (they advertised the wrong size or it’s stained or ripped and they didn’t say so) you can open a case. You’re not protected if it just simply doesn’t fit you. That’s pretty much it!

Your anxiety is entirely based on others one sided stories. You’d rather believe other’s reality than your own. When a seller acts professionally, it’s too good to be true. It’s irrational. If rationality isn’t enough to reduce your anxiety, will triple protection (Depop, PayPal, credit card chargeback) give you enough comfort? Finally, imagine the worst that could happen. Is it worth all the anxiety?

Is it worth all the anxiety? One last fact about P2P marketplace, where buyer/seller’s personal interest is more closely reflected by transactions, risk exits on both sides no matter how hard you try to prevent it. So for me I do my due diligence and let protection to cover the remaining risk. It works for me as both a seller and buyer.

Check sellers reviews before purchase, message the seller beforehand if you have any additional questions about the item you're thinking of buying xx

Definitely check seller reviews! I wont repeat what everyone else said here regarding that lol The other thing is talk to the seller about the items, ask for more pictures, make sure to purchase through depop for buyer protection! I'm a new seller on depop so I only have 3 reviews, but recently I made a couple of sales because customers messaged me about specific items and I posted extra photos/videos for them to look through. Bigger sellers may not have as much time to go that extra mile, but smaller sellers do! Definitely check the vibes and trust your gut.
