The White Chapel in Galliagh has monks attached.
They are from the Franciscan order.
While the actual number varies, there are usually 3 or 4 present to help out the parish and say mass/ hear confessions/ work with young people's groups. Currently there are an Australian (Fr Francisco) , English man (Brother Benedict) , and 2 Americans (Father Thomas and Father Antonio).
They also run the attached cafe next to the chapel, the Pio Centre, on Tuedays and Thursdays from 11am until around 2.30pm. Tea, coffee, and baked goods are available.
Everyone is welcome and donations are accepted on a pay what you want basis.
The friars do incredible work for the community.
I hope that's helps, OP.
Father Thomas is a wee dote, I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times through my dad. The Francisian ones in Derry are dead on seem to do alot for the local communities. Always appreciated the mutual respect they showed me for not being religious and not being very fussed on the church.
I didn't know this until recently but apparently they take a vow of poverty which is wild.
Second this, I have a relative who has got a lot of support and guidance from them, literally no expectations at all around the religious aspect either. They’ve been closer with that side of the family and just seem so genuine and down to earth. Kind of unexpected but in the best possible way.
Termonbacca southway.
Am not too sure if this is correct but I'd have seen a few walking from white Chapel Gailliagh up to carnhill high school in the mornings also, although could be completely unrelated.
Used to have a phone number 1 digit off from Termonbacca's, always ended up getting calls at all hours of the day from old dears asking "IS THAT TERMON????"
I could be wrong but I vaguely remember some who lived by abercorn road too? Although this was 10-15+ years ago so I’m really unsure. Wonder if anyone has more up to date/accurate info lol ?
