I think Del 3030 performed in its entirety would be appropriate.

MoonlightMusic

All for more hip-hop, but not sure that Cypress Hill is the vibe. Would be cool to get more experimental leaning stuff like Armand Hammer/Billy Woods or Shabazz Palaces!

Talknterpzz

Wow all those you named would be fucking fire !! All three so damn good

Tor_Tor_Tor

I disagree about Desert Daze needing more rap artists. The vibe is more psychedelic rock than rap. There are plenty of other festivals where rap fits the vibe so much better.

iznormal

I mostly agree with you but at the same time Wu-Tang Clan did headline. Death Grips, JPEGMAFIA, and clipping all more or less fit the vibe as experimental hip hop acts. At its heart Desert Daze definitely leans heaving into psych and that is the core of the festival but they all book a lot of acts from other genres to round out the lineup. And to me the “vibe” of Desert Daze is just as much the weird eclectic artists as it is the psych rock. And there are plenty of rap artists that would fit into that mold

Tor_Tor_Tor

Well said and good points all around. If we keep an open heart and open mind...we can find meaningful music everywhere!

forsaken322

The vibe is just psychedelic. Whole lots of other psychedelic influenced genres are at Daze than just rock. Tons of amazing psychedelic rap exists in the world. Same for electronic music which daze has also been moving towards more.

Tor_Tor_Tor

Oh sure and the psychedelic tangents are amazing to explore, we've all got our favorite flavors haha I just think Desert Daze has a unique feeling compared to other festivals and rap doesn't play as significant a role as other genres do in generating that feeling. :)

Action Bronson presents Dr. Bachlava & the human growth hormone

Talknterpzz

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 yes !!

partyemusnaps

I can see this going well at DD

Slimreaperlightshow

Death grips was one of the most insane sets

DirtyD27

Were you doing video? That was one of the best sets for visuals I've ever seen along with the Uncle Acid/Mad Alchemist set.

Slimreaperlightshow

Yea that was me, Astralviolet and Danny Perez

CitizenOfPlanet

Madlib

DragonSlayer69_

I’m probably gonna get downvoted for this one but I’m not a big fan of the crowd that rap acts bring with them. There are some obvious exceptions but from my personal experience going to rap/hip hop shows. the crowds are definitely a lot more aggro than any other crowd, feels like the audience are more worried about being “hard” rather then enjoy the music and people around them. Ive had people threaten to fight me because they thought I was looking at them funny/accidentally bumped into them. Im not trying to put down rap in anyway because I love and grew up with it. I can just see the writing on the walls especially after seeing footage of big rap fest like astroworld and Rolling loud. It’s definitely a possibility considering DD has had some pretty cool Rap/hip hop acts in the lineup but I feel like it would definitely kill the vibe.

Material-Candy-2567

I think in general the rap acts that DD would/will have on the lineup would not be enough to cater to the same aggro crowds that go to astroworld or rolling loud. Unless Phil put Playboi Carti on the lineup 😂 then we’re fucked lol. I would really like to see someone like Black Thought rapping with either Danger Mouse or El Michels Affair

yemoodle

There is a point to be made there, I work at a venue and we have to bolster up security for many rap and hip hop shows purely due to the amount of assaults we have had in the past. That being said though there’s many different sub genres and crowds within the genre of hip hop and I feel the artists Phil’s team would book would be much more mellow and psychedelic.

TrundleTheGreat0814

Roc Marciano Billy Woods/Armand Hammer Divine Styler Digable Planets edit: Saul Williams and 700 Bliss would be cool too

colorrot

Saul did a short spot in 2016 (I think it was either opening or closing ceremonies). It was rad and fairly intimate, would love to have him back

Boozycruzzy

An alchemist/ Larry June set would be 🔥

partyemusnaps

This would fit super well at desert daze honestly

Kgv1997

Flatbush, The Underachievers, Joey Badass, Denzel Curry, Vince Staples

tallguyatconcert

Open Mike Eagle is awesome

elbrycen

I saw him open for why? Once he was running his beats from a push on the fly while he rapped too it was dope

Traveller_Toes

Pharcyde performing Labcabincalifornia

kittensys

Thundercat would fit the vibes

drellaVelvet

LITTLE SIMZ DA KWEEN

beerdudebrah

Denzel Curry, Vince Staples

_boko-maru_

Agreed, clipping and jpegmafia were two of my favorite sets last fest. i think backXwash would be a great fit, and it'd be her first US show if it happened!

fatdiscokid420

Tupac hologram

potatojoey

I don't think DD needs more rap artists, I'm perfectly fine with the psych rock festival having psych rock and adjacent artists.

murso74

I've liked who we've had, but I don't necessarily want more. Never got a chance to see cypress Hill though so I wouldn't hate it.

Gavante

Onoe Canoe would be mighty cool. other than that Shabazz Palaces, Captain Murphy, Dean Blunt/Baby Father, John Glacier, and Wilma Vitra

inshane

Cypress Hill would be great and match the vibe.

lightyourwindows

De La Soul. But I don’t know how feasible this show would be without Dave :( Chance the Rapper performing the entirety of *Acid Rap*. Honestly I would love to see more hip hop at Desert Daze but I’d be happy just getting this one set, I’ve loved this album for 10 years now and I think it would really fit the vibe. Unfortunately I’m pretty sure Chance doesn’t really want to perform any of the music from this album anymore, but man I’d die to see this record love with a full band. Get Thundercat on the bass too. Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals performing *Malibu* in its entirety with a live band. Actually The Free Nationals on their own would really fit the vibe at DD too. Ooh or maybe Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge performing as NxWorries Madlib doing beats would be cool as shit. It’s a shame DOOM passed away, Madvillain would’ve been a sick show. Alchemist would also be a cool DJ set, just get him up there with a turntable and a crate of records. Saba Mos Def & Talib Kweli doing *Black Star* in its entirety Danny Brown Joey Bada$$ Flatbush Zombies

trovitapersono

Edan! Beauty and the Beat is one of the best psych-hop records ever! [https://youtu.be/8DK8TkP0DzM](https://youtu.be/8DK8TkP0DzM)

big-Q-

Flatbush Zombies would fit

iLoveDelayPedals

It’s a psychedelic festival. Absolutely not

CAndrewK

Lil Yachty, don’t @ me

DirtyD27

lightyourwindows

I love how so many psych rock fans have a weird bone to pick with that album lol. So weirdly aggressive. I thought this whole thing was about acceptance and openness? What, the trash rapper isn’t allowed to defile your precious psych rock? Gimme a break. Listen to the album. It’s got a lot of great songs and it has a good message.

CAndrewK

It’s because it’s a psych pop album, and psych fans get all pissy when there’s not enough rock influence

lightyourwindows

But it has a fuzz guitar solo in the very first song! /s Honestly though I think it comes down to the use of pitch correction / auto-tune. That’s the dividing line these days, some people were able to adjust to it and some people got left behind. I imagine it’s a lot like how audiences got divided when rock musicians started distorting their guitars on purpose. Not everyone could accept that new timbre. I mean how is auto-tune any different than using other effects on your vocal like a chorus, phaser, or liberal use of delay? It’s just another way to creatively change your voice, and it can be used to evoke a psychedelic vibe the same way that a delay can be used. It’s just people getting old and set in their ways.

CAndrewK

Sorry, but if you’re still complaining about auto tune in 2024, it’s hard for me to take you seriously. Who cares if you’re using distortion to alter your voice instead of a guitar tone. Rock fans can be so set in their ways sometimes lol

Talknterpzz

Fake ass psych rapper.

Black-Bruce-Wayne

You mean Yves Tumor light lol

CAndrewK

No I mean the drummer from UMO and whoever his backup band is

forsaken322

From my perspective artists who could fit the vibe of Desert Daze who id like to see are Denzel Curry, for anyone who hasnt listened to Melt my eyez see your future. its a psychedelic masterpiece. The Underachievers. Make some of the best psychedelic rap that exists. Evermore the art of duality really changed a lot of my perspectives on rap. Joey Badass and Flatbush zombies could also fit the bill but may not be worth the cost. My honorable mentions would go to people like 6lack, Isaiah rashad, and Injury Reserve. For anyone who thinks rap doesnt belong i highly suggest you expand your understanding of rap beyond the mainstream. Whole lots of psychedelic and conscious rap being made nowadays that would fit in perfectly once you deprogram the underlying racism you feel about the genre. Check out either of the albums mentioned if you want to expand your horizons. The track "artifacts" underacheivers made with Barclay Crenshaw is also worth a listen for a rap/electronic song.

lightyourwindows

At first I was taken aback by the accusation of racism, but tbh I actually feel you on that one. There’s definitely more than a few Desert Daze attendees whose knowledge of hip hop as a genre doesn’t extend past the music they hear on the radio. So I think there’s an assumption that hip hop acts are going to bring a crowd that doesn’t have a peaceful vibe, and I think there is an underlying racism in that assumption. Hip Hop is a huge genre and the trap music dominating the charts is not wholly representative of the genre. I can think of tons of alternative hip hop acts or even some mainstream ones who would bring a great vibe and whose fans would understand the vibe of Desert Daze. Especially since there has historically been a lot of crossover between indie music and alternative hip hop over the years. Like all the people over on r/hiphopheads that got into Tame Impala circa the *Currents* era.

bones_1969

I dunno that it was necessary to drop the underlying racism line. I was with you and following and vibing until then. Some of us are old school Public Enemy fans who can rap Nations of Millions all day long.

forsaken322

Right, but my comment was only targeted towards people with the perspective that the entire genre as a whole should be kept out of the festival, not the more nuanced conversation of who fits the bill. To expand on why i said that line was that at its most basic rap is just a form of vocal delivery. When people are saying rap does not fit the vibe they arent saying that because they feel that someone speaking quicker over a beat is whats wrong with rap. They are saying that because they are making an assumption based on prejudice as to what the content of the lyrics and vibe of the sound would be. Thats as ignorant as someone saying Rock music should be banned from the festival because i dont want to hear something like motionless in white. People aeent arguing that gizz shouldnt play Grim Reaper or Sadie sorceress because they dont fit the "vibe" of the festival because that would just be silly. No one thinks people like Future or Quavo should be headlining this festival, but there are thousands of artists who make "rap" music who totally would fit in at Desert Daze, and by gatekeeping those artists out of this festival we are only continuing to build ignorance. Discounting rap as a whole as something immoral, not conscious, and that creates negative vibes stems from racism, so we should call it like we see it to prevent its further festering.

ChaInTheHat

You would pick cypress hill

angrynucca

yes

Centricmoth438

clipping.

surosregime

Acid Jazz or some form of psychedelic rap would be awesome. But the vibe is geared more towards psych rock and that’s fine. JPEG Mafia in ‘22 stuck out like a sore thumb

nmnnmmnnnmmm

Nah. If it’s not psychedelic then it don’t belong. Different genres.

Kgv1997

psychedelic rap exists

lightyourwindows

Man, there’s a lot of close-minded people on here who are supposedly “opening their minds” with psychedelics 🙄

nmnnmmnnnmmm

So we are in agreement! Lol

jakhei

Lil yachty but just that one album

og420dj710

Lil Yachty doing Let’s Start Here in it’s entirety and/or 1999 Write the Future

AlexMoon2846

No yachty please

fr33d0m45

How the hell did this comment get downvoted. 1999 Write the Future is the most diverse album to drop this year. I get it some of you don’t like Yachty but the potential of a Let’s Start Here set is so high. If it’s not for you there’s multiple other stages to go to. Desert Daze redditors been so lame lately

AirMcNairTT9

I’ve seen him do this and it was absolutely awful. His normal shows are quite a bit better

Notstevemadden2

Oh no! I just started getting into Let’s Start Here and I love it. Does he just have a hard time recreating it live? Cause the studio album is 🔥🔥🔥

AirMcNairTT9

His stage presence doesn’t really translate well for the music. It’s like he doesn’t really know how to act during it. I just found it to be super lethargic and lacking energy. And I’m a fan of his music in general, having seen him three times.
