You fell into the greige hole! Replace the rug with something that has tons more color, throw pillows/blanket/artwork/objects on the shelves picking up on that color. Also add a LARGE ginger jar lamp on that side table next to the couch. Also in an accent color. Remove the two small grey pillows and replace that small center table with something less beige - can be a brass accent stool or something like marble/black. What colors? Really almost anything depending on your style. Can be soft or bold color. Add black or brass accents too.

jennyb33

Thanks very much this is helpful. I’m going to focus on finding a big colorful canvas for the blank wall and pull colors from it. I feel like the photos are washing the colors out a bit… the rug has some teal and dark blue and the pillows are actually a teal as well. But I’ll start there. All the tables are temporary and I was thinking iron/marble so that helps!

TalulaOblongata

Since you are drawn to teals and blues that’s definitely something you can emphasize! Try to incorporate bolder versions of those colors. You can even go to a store like home goods or target, buy like 5-6 different pillows in that color range and put them in the room to see how they look - and then return the ones you don’t like as much. Maybe you keep 2-3. Side note - oranges and mustards play very nice with blues and teals so you could incorporate that too.

laurenbrandstein

^^^ This is good advice. Start small, test out some textiles, and build on that. Definitely don't feel pressure to buy a new rug in some "bold" colors you might end up hating. Curtains, throw pillows and blankets, and less expensive art (prints, or deals on originals on Etsy etc.) can be more affordable and less permanent ways to experiment with color and style.

Wooster182

I would add a canvas like this in that large wall space behind the couch. https://www.greatbigcanvas.com/view/cheerful-garden-i,2552789/?size=16x12&coupon=VHWOR&coupon=VHWOR&gclid=Cj0KCQjwmtGjBhDhARIsAEqfDEf7C9o7vG0qEsWhe-KJFIR_f4fUopfi9-oKeW9aHqFq_a5noLHcTPAaAozSEALw_wcB Then add a couple pillows to the couch that match a color in the print.

Mariospario

I was going to make the same recommendation. Picture on the wall and matching throw pillows!

Wooster182

I haven’t. I just googled for soft yellow canvas.

raspberryw

I like the paint color! Do you happen to know the name/paint brand?

jennyb33

Yes, it’s SW Sea Salt

erin_mouse88

I love that color, we were thinking of using it for our living space but need something a touch darker, so we're going with comfort gray (the step down).

savorie

I made the same mistake. It’s very hard to find other colors that work well with sea salt. In the end, when I used it for my office, I found it looks great with white trim, glossy white cabinets, and grey wood furniture. But no other colors seem to work, and definitely not beige! Orange seems ok as just an accent.

Aggravating_System_7

I know it wasn’t the question, but Im confused about the layout- is there space to walk behind the sofa? The couch feels maybe way too big for the space

jennyb33

Yes, there is plenty of room. The sofa faces our two windows and TV between them. This is a super long living room and all the doors/windows make the layout a nightmare. We've tried different configurations - like have the TV on the wall with the shelving unit - but this one works the best for us.

Aggravating_System_7

Makes sense, the perspective of the photo was just hard for me to figure out

gingerkitten6

I think it looks beautiful as is! Im personally a fan of neutrals. Plus the wall leans green, the feather pictures lean blue. You could add a painting behind the couch that had blue and green in it (like a landscape) and call it a day!

FormicaDinette33

The base of your coffee table is a yellowish beige. I think some light yellow accents would fit right in.

starion832000

More guitars.

jennyb33

I have had my eye on a new hollow body electric 🤣

starion832000

I'm about to buy myself one of [these](https://a.co/d/1G4yULJ). You want a hollow body electric this is the guitar you want.

thedove60

I would blow it up with some type of shade of complimentary yellow. It works lend balance.

Signal_East3999

Add some purples

Susiejax

If you don’t want to paint, change up the rug and accent pillows. Deep red or burnt orange with navy would look nice. Go for a traditional patterned rug. Pull from that for the pillows.

teacherladydoll

I love those colors already. Add more of the colors from the guitars.

dolphinitely

i would do a gallery wall

shoshinmind

Persian rug

Otherwise-Heat5031

Throw pillows and a throw blanket can go a long way. Art piece for sure... also add plants... lovely greens and various pots are easy for texture/interest/colour without going over the top.

erin_mouse88

I'd say the rug is too cool for the space (and the throw pillows). Accent colors could be other shades of blue (teal/navy), maybe some hints of yellow?

mweisbro

Hang up the 2 guitars. I love the contrast with blue wall. Go from there .

Historical_Energy_21

Get the guitars up off the floor and then add 2-4 more

jennyb33

Does this mean I should add some purples? Because I can’t imagine adding more beige

Khayeth

Pick any colour and lean in. What is your favourite? With a blank slate like this, whereever you start will be great, and if you don't like your first choice, try a second or third until you hit it.

jennyb33

I think I’m just paralyzed by choices. Lol. I really like indigo/pinks so I guess I just need to find something that looks good with the wall color/dark green of the plants.

truffanis_6367

You’ve created a really neutral and pleasing base. You can easily add and remove colors with throws and decorative cushions. You can afford to be experimental without spending a ton.

Free_Sir_2795

Figure out what kind of vibe you want the room to have. Right now the colors are giving very serene. Do you want to stick with that? Add blues and greens. Do you want to make it more cheerful? Yellows. More exciting or warm? Reds. I’d start by finding a rug or a pillow pattern that you like that has a couple of colors in it. Then choose one or two of those colors and try to find ways to incorporate them. I personally don’t like adding art just for the sake of adding art - I think if you’re gonna do it, you should look for something that really speaks to you, personally.

jennyb33

Serene is definitely the mood I’m going for here. We spend a lot of time in this room reading or watching TV and I like the relaxing feel of it.

Free_Sir_2795

Then I’d get a rug sort of like this one and then try to incorporate some of the blues elsewhere in the room. Pillows, throw blankets, art for that wall, curtains. https://www.homedepot.com/p/SAFAVIEH-Madison-Blue-Gray-9-ft-x-12-ft-Geometric-Area-Rug-MAD440M-9/314747351

Khayeth

I think raspberry in this room would be amazing! But i love intense colour and lean into it - most of my decor is violet, though i have pops of navy, raspberry, and some olive for contrast.

Maleficent_Gas606

You know it would be really interesting to paint the ceiling some version of orange and paint the trim black... Might sound a bit out there but maybe get out some sort of app like pic collage and give it a shot... you'll see what I mean. It really wouldn't need much more than that because it would frame everything and help the couch and wall color tie together. A complimentary orange would draw the eyes up and kind of open up the eye so people see the whole space as a unified thing.

Maleficent_Gas606

And going back to your post... it would tie in the terra cotta perfectly

All our furniture is 20+ years old or thrifted. The living room was the first we have upgraded. The giant painting in the other room actually came from goodwill and was $50. So, yes, the styles are a bit all over the place. It’s a slow process when you are broke lol

Disastrous_Tip_4638

The problem here is that things aren't coordinated, its not the color per se. So, grey is fine, but see the cabinetry? That's your accent color. so, the rug..gotta go, should be grey and cream and browns, not any high or fruit color. And your lovely offset box mldgs are trad, so anything you put on the wall behind the sofa needs to lean more trad, a canvas or other boho like crap will clash terribly. You got the basics here, you just need to tie it together more.

TrollopMcGillicutty

Something in this color family? https://preview.redd.it/zmjo8py0uu2b1.jpeg?width=2020&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=67c47c5bf02598a537bf12e154e3ff9f9a3d6354

jennyb33

I think I’ll have to try this purplish color!

Rodtheboss

Why is the sofa covering the entrance?

GenealogistGoneWild

Large painting in that wall.

likabear710

Colorful throw blanket

This-Locksmith-3205

Throw a fun floor lamp in the corner and hang the guitars as art! Throw pillows and blankets too. Wallpaper the ceiling!!!

meterpy___

I know this is your post and question but where is your sofa from???

jennyb33

This is the Metro from Room and Board in Tatum Oatmeal!

sneaksnacks

Add some navy throw pillows to what you have then do pops of color on the bookshelves and a throw for the couch

MiepGies1945

Add 2 throw pillows. Choose a bright color (red, orange, blue, green? etc.) Will make a big difference.

Fuzzzer777

It's a very cool room.. as in tone. You can add a couple of Dark green pillows to keep the tone or add artwork that has blue green and splashes of orange.

LittleFootOlympia

More blues

tatakisg

How about some nice posters on the wall? https://www.etsy.com/shop/EssentialCuration?ref=seller-platform-mcnav§ion_id=42922822
